Genevieve Bailey is a documentarian who has drawn attention to the impact of societal struggles with mental illness through her empathetic and nurturing body of work. With feature films like I Am Eleven and Happy Sad Man, Gen embraces a supportive mindset, using the power of cinema to bring real stories to audiences. It's that sense of support that is keenly felt in her latest documentary, Always Listening, a short film about the history of Lifeline Australia. Gen takes us to the end of the telephone where we meet the many counsellors and support people who volunteer their time, emotions, and empathetic listening skills to guide people through mental health crisis events, suicidal ideation, and other critical mental struggles.Like Gen's previous film Happy Sad Man, Always Listening is a beautiful and moving experience, opening audiences up to the power of understanding emotion and empathy, while also guiding people who live with their own mental health struggles to understand that there is help available and that people are there to support you through your most difficult moments. It's these two mindsets - the support and the supported - that has changed how I navigate my interviews and film coverage, leading me to ask questions that are focused around the emotion of a film, rather than the creative process of 'how it was made'.That mindset shift comes from getting to see who the people are on the other end of the line: everyday folks who have sometimes been through their own mental health crisis, or live with their own struggles, or simply know what it's like to be in a place of need and are able to support those who need it most. These are gentle, genuine folks who are caring, engaged, and understand the complexity of the weight of the mental health crisis Australia, and by extension, the world faces.Again, that's a notion that underpins how Genevieve Bailey embraces her work as a documentarian, telling stories that matter about people that care. I'm grateful to have been able to talk with Gen about Always Listening, but to also be able to share with you her stories, including the impact her films have had on audiences around the world.Always Listening is screening on SBS On Demand right now. It's only thirty minutes long, but will leave a mark. If you or someone you love is going through a mental health crisis, Lifeline Australia is available 24/7 on 13 11 14. As always, the show starts off on an unusual tangent, with a wild discussion around Steven finding the Etsy website and deciding to purchase anything he can that can include the Double Tap logo – purely for professional video recording reasons only obviously! Also, the guys get into discussion on how their new studios will be designed and what steps they are taking to get ready for the move to YouTube. This leads to a rumour about the upcoming Mac Mini and its potential redesign, with new M4 chips and a possibly smaller Apple TV-like size.Steven also shares an article with Shaun from Wired Magazine about a new AI pin called Friend that wants to be your best friend. It will listen to you all day and send you messages via your phone to help you along, like talking to you about your day, what might have gone wrong during a recent date and even ribbing you if you're losing at your favourite video game. Bible Reading: Psalm 66:19-20"We're leaving in five minutes, everybody. Let's get moving!" Dad called from the garage. Hunter, already packed and ready hours ago, bounded in through the back door. "Mom, Mom! Guess what I found outside!" But, distracted with her preparations, Mom didn't seem to hear. She bent over the cooler she was trying to organize and, frowning, pulled out a box of graham crackers. "That certainly doesn't belong in here…and neither does this…" "Mom, listen, in the backyard there's this…" Hunter paused, realizing his mother wasn't paying attention. "I know you're busy, but this is really cool!" Mom blinked. "Hmm? Hunter, if there's something you need, you can go ask your sisters. I still have so much to do." She glanced at the clock on the wall. "Oh, look at the time!" And with that, she hurried away. Hunter found his sisters in the next room. "Hey, Addy, Katie, guess what I saw in the backyard!" But the girls seemed to be preoccupied with their own business as well. "Addy, do you have my coloring book?" Katie asked her twin. "Well, yes, but--" "Oh, there it is. Let me have it.""Guys?" Hunter interrupted. "Don't you want to hear?" Addy ignored Hunter and scowled at her sister. "It's not your coloring book anymore. Mom said I could have it since you never used it." Katie jumped to her feet. "What? That's not fair! Give it back!""Nuh-uh! Mom said it's mine!" "We'll see about that. Mom!" Katie stormed out with Addy close on her heels. Hunter sighed in disappointment. "Isn't there anyone who wants to hear what I have to say?" Then he remembered the one person he could always go to when he wanted someone to talk to. Closing his eyes and folding his hands together, Hunter prayed. "Jesus, I haven't been having a very good day--no one seems to have time for me. But I know you're always there and always want to listen. You know what I found today? A robin's nest with two little blue eggs in the tree next to the window. I'm going to keep watch every day so I won't miss it when they hatch!" –Eliana CanfieldHow About You?Have you ever wanted to talk to someone who wasn't available to listen? It can be disappointing when our family or friends don't have time for us. But the greatest friend of all, Jesus, always listens to our prayers. He loves it when we talk to Him! Next time you want someone to talk to, share your thoughts with Him, the one who always listens.Today's Key Verse:Even before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will hear. Today we're talking about “interoception” - a sixth sense of generally knowing what is happening across our entire bodies. Interoception is the perception of the whole state of the body. Many times we lose sensitivity to or interpretation of this sense and its signals, and it causes a disconnection - that could contribute to anxiety, depression, even things like PTSD or eating disorders.  Mild disconnection to our interoception may lie a lot under the guise of productivity and efficiency - at home, on errands, in work, in education systems, in economic challenges, politics and social discourse about challenging issues, etc. We miss our body's signals - feeling stressed or at ease. Feeling hungry or full. Whether we're running on a full tank or on fumes. Whether we're breathing shallow or deep. Whether we feel unsafe or safe (and whether we feel “allowed" to feel unsafe). The world around us is constantly asking us to separate our thoughts from our bodies, to disregard our gut feelings, our basic needs, and our 6th sense that something is off. Interoception makes us more aware of our emotional and physical needs so that we can satisfy these needs in healthy ways. Today, I want to give you permission to ground yourself and grow your interoception - your very real sixth sense - so that you can begin to have a real understanding of where whole health begins. Brain Fact Friday: PART 2 on ”Chronic Pain and the Brain: It IS All in Your Head”

Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning

Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we cover the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace) with tools, ideas and strategies that we can all use for increased results. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and educator with a passion for learning specifically on the topics of health, wellbeing and productivity, and launched this podcast to share how important an understanding of our brain is for our everyday life and results--whether we are a teacher in the classroom, or in the modern workplace. For today's EPISODE #232 and Brain Fact Friday, I wanted to stay on the theme of chronic pain and disease as we prepare to speak with Dr. Ashok Gupta[i] next week, a well-known Neuroplasticity "brain retraining" expert who has spent the last 25 years researching the effects of the brain and the mind on chronic pain and illness. I have so many questions for him, and hope you will tune into this next episode where I know he will answer everything, and give us all a solid plan for how to move forward to live healthier, more productive lives with our brain in mind. After posting last week's Brain Fact Friday, where we looked at chronic pain and the brain, asking “is it all in our head” I received many messages, including one from cognitive neuroscience researcher John Harmon, from EPISODE #170[ii] who added to our post on LinkedIn, saying that “most neuroscientists who study pain say it IS in the brain. And beliefs about bodily pain -- such as "I think this treatment will reduce my pain" -- are (obviously) in the brain also. There is a very real physical connection between pain perception and one's beliefs, emotion, attitudes and the rest of the mind.” He sums this all up saying, “If the mind (including pain and thoughts and beliefs about it) = a set of functional neural networks, it's easy to see how the mind can either amplify, or dampen, pain -- via the two sets of FNNs (functional neural networks) either amplifying, or working to dampen, one another.” This shows me something I've thought about for years—that it does matter what we think about. Which brings me to this week's Brain Fact Friday. DID YOU KNOW THAT “Negative thoughts cause your brain to immediately release chemicals that affect every cell in your body, making you feel bad; while the opposite is also true—positive, happy, hopeful thoughts release chemicals that make you feel good. Your thought patterns can also have long-term effects. Repetitive negative thinking may promote the buildup of the harmful deposits seen in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease and may increase the risk of dementia, according to a 2020 brain imaging study in Alzheimer's & Dementia.”[iii] (Dr. Amen, Your Brain is Always Listening. In the world famous physician Dr. Daniel Amen's recent book that he published in the middle of the Global Pandemic, Your Brain is Always Listening, he affirms that it's not just the thoughts we are thinking about our health and wellness that are damaging for us, but how we think about everything that we do. If Your Brain is Always Listening,[iv] it makes sense to me that it's fed positive thoughts about our mental AND physical health just like what John Harmon said about “the real connection between pain perception and one's beliefs, emotion, attitudes and the rest of the mind.” This is one reason why I don't like sarcasm. I don't think it's funny at all to poke fun of yourself or another person for anything. I'm pretty serious about this, as it just hits a chord with me. If I ever hear someone putting themselves down in any way, I'll mention it and say something like “well that's not true” hoping it will switch that person's mind from this practice that I didn't realize until writing this episode could contribute to the risk of this person developing dementia later in life. It's important what we think about whether it's in relation to that nagging pain we feel in our body, or those automatic negative thoughts that Dr. Amen writes about in his book, Your Brain is Always Listening. Julia Gover's TED Talk on Pain and the Brain that we mentioned in last week's Brain Fact Friday explains the science behind this concept when she said that “pain is an output of our brain, not an input from our body” and that our brain “takes cues from our mood (and the level of stress hormones in your blood) from your environment (sight, sounds and smells), from your memory (to see if you've been in this situation before) and it will also take into account your own personal beliefs about your health and your body. Then it takes all of this into consideration and asks—do I need to protect myself. If the brain thinks there's a threat, it will produce the experience of pain to protect you.”[v] REVIEW To review this week's Brain Fact Friday, DID YOU KNOW that “negative thoughts cause your brain to immediately release chemicals that affect every cell in your body, making you feel bad; while the opposite is also true—positive, happy, hopeful thoughts release chemicals that make you feel good. It's important more than ever that we find strategies to keep our thoughts positive, and eliminate negative thought cycles.  If you find yourself waking up and not feeling happy, for your physical and mental health, I think it's of high importance to look for ways that you can switch this. IDEAS FOR KEEPING OUR THOUGHTS POSITIVE TIP 1: I covered one way that I've kept a positive mindset, while at the same time boosted mental clarity and focus, with EPISODE #231[vi] on my “Update on the Fisher Wallace Brain Stimulator” that increases serotonin and melatonin, while decreasing that stress hormone cortisol. Check out this episode that covers my results with using this wearable medical device designed to combat insomnia, anxiety and depression. TIP 2: You could also read Dr. Amen's book Your Brain is Always Listening where he talks about our “hidden dragons” that we can uncover for solutions to controlling our happiness and changing hard-wired habits in the brain. IMAGE CREDIT: Dr. Daniel Amen's Presentation on "Your Brain is Always Listening" Published on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unHhPdefYIU&t=547s TIP 3: Work it out with exercise that Dr. Amen says solves most mental and physical problems. Whatever you decide to do to keep your thoughts positive, remember: I'll see you next week as we dive into Dr. Gupta's discoveries about chronic pain and illness and how the thoughts we think about really do matter. Have a wonderful weekend.
