The police killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis generated a significant amount of conversation and coverage, while the killing of environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in a Georgia state police raid just weeks later has gotten considerably less attention. This time in our monthly feature, Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura Flanders and Sara Lomax of URL Media talk with two journalists who have been reporting on these stories for local Black-led outlets. Is there anything in their response that might deepen how we think about power and race, racism, police and public safety? Our guests are Gavin Godfrey, Atlanta editor at Capital B, and Report for America corps member Brittany Brown, a reporter at MLK50: Justice Through Journalism where she covers criminal justice and labor in Memphis.“. . . We saw national media parachute into Memphis really covering the flashpoint moment that this was for the city . . . At MLK50, we're really focused on highlighting the continuing efforts that are going on every week.” - Brittany Brown“I think what separates our coverage from local coverage in the city is that we are trying to find out how this affects the people that are the most affected. Most of [the] local news is talking to officials, law enforcement officials, and then getting a couple of quotes and clips from protestors without a lot of context.” - Gavin Godfrey“Our communities need to have outlets . . . that are coming from the ground up and from our people. I'm really grateful that there is a new wave of Black media outlets that are doing the work in Atlanta, in Memphis, in Philadelphia, all over the country . . .” - Sara LomaxGuests:Brittany Brown: Criminal Justice & Labor Reporter, MLK50: Justice Through JournalismGavin Godfrey: Atlanta Editor, Capital BSara Lomax: Co-Founder, URL Media; President & CEO, WURD Radio The Show is listener and viewer supported. The first is the police killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis after a traffic stop, and the second is the killing of queer environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in Atlanta during a police raid. The conversation covers the quantity of coverage these stories have received, the proposed ninety million dollar police training complex in the Walloni forest, the response of the public and the ongoing efforts of activists and community organizers. (0:09:51) - Self-Care in Trauma Reporting (11 Minutes)This episode of the Laura Flanders show focuses on the two recent police-involved killings of Tyre Nichols in Memphis and Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in Atlanta. The conversation addresses the calls for more training and how the proposed police training center in Atlanta has sparked fear in the predominantly black community. The roundtable also discusses the power dynamics of police brutality when officers are black as well as the importance of trauma-informed reporting and setting boundaries for self-care. (0:20:52) - The Legacy of Systemic Police Violence (9 Minutes)This discussion focused on the events in Memphis over the past year, including the election of the first Democratic District Attorney in decades and the swift response to the misconduct of police officers. Questions were raised about the role of democracy and consent in this response, in addition to the issue of public safety. The conversation then shifted to the survey conducted by the mayor on the proposed COPC City training center, in which 69% of the population were against it. The participants discussed the need to ask better questions, and to listen to the people in order to facilitate a dialogue towards a solution.
Some of the biggest fears a law enforcement officer may have is being shot and being on the national/global news for a scandal. What if both were to happen to you? God forbid, if the worst case scenario happened, are you truly prepared? Mentally, physically, logistically? Be honest with yourself. I don't have the statistics but I can predict that a majority of our nation's law enforcement officers are not prepared for this. Jon Mattingly had to deal with just this, and more, following the incident in 2020 involving Breona Taylor. In this week's episode he shares his experience and how he has found his way out of the darkness. Check it out! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/teneightpodcast/support

The constant police shootings have forced us to reexamine the policies of law enforcement. Police shootings are becoming a national crisis in American law
30 years ago America watched in horror as South Central Los Angeles burned after the not guilty verdict was announced in the Rodney King police beating. 28 years later we saw a country wide eruption of frustration over law enforcement's extra judicial killings of George Floyd and Breona Taylor. From 1968 in Watts, to 1992 in South Central, to 2020 what is the main function of these uprisings and what have they accomplished in their wake? What has changed with law enforcement? Is the idea of reforming law enforcement a bourgeois project? Has BLM or Abolish/Defund the Police helped or is it simply a more radical hashtag activism? We'll ask these questions and more. The His & Her Money Show: Managing Money, Marriage, and Everything In Between
With recent events, including the murder of Breona Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery, the holes in the system and our society as a whole have once again come to light, and everybody has questions. Why do these things keep happening? What needs to change, and who can make that change? When? Some of these answers may be grey, but as black people, it's imperative that we keep these lines of communication open. So, that's exactly what we're doing today. In this episode of the His & Her Money Show, Dr. Christina Edmondson is taking the world to school on race, gender, and especially, changing up the narrative for black women. Christina, mom of two and wife of a pastor, holds a Master's degree with a background in sociology and psychology, so she knows a whole lot about a WHOLE LOT, and she's here today dropping nuggets on some of the key points to unifying ourselves socially, spiritually, and beyond. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Breaking down problematic stereotypes We discuss black identity The "role" of the black woman through history, and how Christina hopes we can change the narrative Recognizing the many forms of systemic racism We discuss current events such as the murder of George Floyd and the spark of change ignited in America Breaking down the mistreatment of black women in the medical industry RESOURCES MENTIONED Follow Christina @DrCEdmondson on Twitter! We hear far too much about happiness and remaining positive in this nation, so much so that every mean ass thing some cop does is automatically depicted as a positive fight against criminality. The reality is generally much more complex, as in the case with Daunte Wright, who was murdered by a blood thirsty cop while handcuffed in his car. Yes, we all know the moderate side of the story, which states that black people are naturally violent and therefore must be killed. We reject the moderate view of cop killings outright because all they want to do is make money off of the whole stupid peace movement that has been going on since the 60s, that's sixty years for those of you who are keeping count, and we've actually lost ground on the liberal front since this movement was initiated. No one wants to hear that give peace a chance crap anymore. It's time that these cops were ridiculed, and exposed for the frauds they are. I am done mincing words with killer cop apologists. There will be no more understanding the cop's point of view. If you want to understand a cops point of view you can listen to any number of television networks that will sit there and take the police side on every issue imaginable. I am not going to watch more conservative news casters and hollywood celebrities pretending to be liberals to make a buck off of the hard work that real liberals do. No one wants to hear what some idiot pundit has to think about murder. A murder is a murder. It is illegal. We don't have to talk about it, nor should we. It should just be wrong. But instead these moronic pundits have turned a clear case of abuse of power into another stupid debate. They actually want you to believe this dumb cop accidentally shot someone. The story is, and this is serious, that the cop mistook her taser for a gun, and that she didn't really mean to kill an unarmed man sitting in his car. This is just plain insulting to anyone who is more intelligent than a five year old. What the hell are you talking about? Do you expect me to buy this bullshit? How stupid do people think I am? The media is perpetuating the nonsensical lie that Mr. Wright was somehow at fault. They are spinning what really occurred so that they can turn this into a money making scheme just as they did with George Flyod. Well, I'm calling them out. These cops are killers, cold blooded killers who work with white nationalists very closely. These cops also have drug ties that are not getting much press. Several times there have been instances where drug seizures completely disappeared after the cops raided a drug lords house. Where did the drugs go then? Did Antifa steal them? Was it the Illuminati that took all that damn cocaine and heroin? That's probably the dumb ass argument they would make, either that or that China stole it. In reality, cops get caught dealing drugs all the damn time. The boys in blue also love to frequent prostitutes and illegal brothels. Cops break the law, flagrantly, all the time when they are not buys bothering black people or eating for free at some local business. They are the ones causing a lot of the damn crime, yet they are allowed to break the law in the name of safety? What the hell are you smoking that you would think this is okay? I guess it's some of the heroin and coke that those dirty cops are selling you. You would have to be extremely high to believe that all these people are ending up dead for no reason. A lot of these victims who end up killed by cops were actually going to testify in some other case. Breona Taylor is a perfect example. Further, cops put themselves in these situations by torturing their victims with verbal and physical abuse, which of course will cause any human being to flee. The "well, they resisted argument" is not any kind of valid argument. All sentient beings will attempt to flee violent situations, and some will fight back. These cops know that. They enjoy killing black people for sport. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morecontentplease/support

In a tragic and tumultuous year, relations between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to serve have frayed beyond the breaking point. Police killings, brutally excessive uses of force, and militarization to the point where police officers resemble occupying forces...they've taken a toll. Rep. Johnson brought together citizens affected by police violence, law enforcement groups, lawmakers, and other interested parties to forge a solution. We'll talk about the results of his efforts today.

Ongoing police brutality leading to the death of George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmed Arbery, and countless others has sparked street-level action nationwide. In our sixth episode of the Riverwise podcast, Amas and Eric speak with Chris White, director of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality (DCAPB) as he addresses the challenges of reimagining policing in Detroit. Working in Detroit neighborhoods since the mid-1990s, the DCAPB has focused on conflict mediation and restorative justice to address police misconduct and police brutality. The DCAPB has been instrumental in advocating for victims' rights in and out of court and provides material and spiritual support for victims of gun violence and police brutality throughout the city. Recent national organizing around the Movement for Black Lives reflects new thinking about policing and racial justice. Detroit protests have included demands for the City to go beyond mere reform and straight to transforming policing entirely. White has been clear about his personal support for ongoing mass street protests for racial justice in Detroit and across the nation. But he remains cautious regarding the possible disconnects between more radical positions taken by many protesters, and residents in the city who are the most impacted by police policy. Will that ideological divide provides the Mayor and Police Chief ample public support for maintaining the status quo? Join us in what we hope will be part one of a vital dialogue with Chris White, recorded on June 23, 2020. For over three years now, the Riverwise collective has created media that depicts local activism and the profound new work being done in Detroit neighborhoods. Through the quarterly Riverwise magazine, Riverwise community conversations, and the Riverwise Writing Workshop, we're developing our collective voice.

The Hake Report, Thur. 6/11/20: NASCAR propaganda video: George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery… are evidence of “racism” how? Some official Kirk Price kneeled for the anthem, against the rules. He called himself “humble.” The world recruits “stars” like Bubba Wallace, the only black fulltime NASCAR driver, to push their evil agenda. About Confederate flags: “No one should feel uncomfortable…” Evil corporate SJW attacks on Tucker Carlson! But “Black Lives Matter” is no different from the “14 words.” And it's every bit as rooted in hatred, terrorism, and violence. Caller Log, courtesy of Jesse's producer, Nick Ben from Canada talks about the historical statues being toppled and fighting evil. Darryl from Florida talks about how radicals want to erase history and take down the country. Stephen from Long Island, NY comments on racism as he sees it and a little bit about Jeff Charles, a guest James had on recently. Richard from North Carolina talks about BLM and radical groups. Maze from Dayton, OH has some info about the original starting of BLM back in 1965 by radical James Baldwin. Andrew from Ohio talks about something Thomas Sowell said, comparing blackouts from one year versus another, and the difference in the level of crime that took place. We like you as well have been incredibly angry with the recent deaths of Goerge Floyd, Breona Taylor, David McAtee the countless Black Americans killed by police, the police reaction to peaceful protests, and the horrible response we've received from our president. In this episode we do try and touch on our usual topics of what were playing and gaming news but its very difficult to pull away from whats unfolding because its so very important. You can donate to Black Lives Matter here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ms_blm_homepage_2019 If our 2 listeners out there have not been bothered by recent and ongoing police murder and brutality and there then go ahead and fuck off. We do not want you here. We're just fine continuing to talk to ourselves over here. For everyone on the side of peace and justice we hope to see you vote both this November and actively in your local elections. THIS WEEK THE CANNONS DISCUSS JOE BIDENS COMMENTS, CENTRAL PARK RACIST AMY COOPER, BREONA TAYLOR, AHMAUD ARBERY AND THE PUBLIC LYNCHING OF GEORGE FLOYD
This episode is dedicated to George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and anyone else who's life was taken away from police brutality! We are tired of this same cycle. Enough is Enough! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
This episode focuses on the tragic death of Breona Taylor at the hands of the police, as well as her boyfriend Kenneth Walker. Kenneth Walker was attested for defending his home from a no knock raid, a violation of his fourth amendment rights. Today, there's a little more sense than nonsense.
It's Friday!!! Today's the last day of the week and on today's episode me and SB discuss how we would spend our Corona checks (2:05) and lay out a new strategy to address police violence after we discuss the unfortunate death of Breona Taylor (10:35).
