Beyond the Medicine : The Critical Role of Training and Safety in Psychedelic Therapy with Joe Moore and Kyle Buller | EP16 | with Psychedelics Today

In this episode of The Psychedelic Couch, host Clare Faulkner is joined by Joe and Kyle, the co-founders of Psychedelics Today, to discuss the rapidly evolving world of psychedelic therapy. The conversation focuses on the growing importance of proper safety protocols, education, and comprehensive training for facilitators working with psychedelic substances such as MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine. Joe and Kyle emphasise how vital it is for facilitators, whether in underground or legal settings, to be thoroughly prepared to ensure both safety and effective therapeutic outcomes for their clients. A key theme in the discussion is the ongoing legal and medical advancements surrounding psychedelics in the U.S. The episode touches on the groundbreaking steps being taken in places like Oregon, where psychedelics have been fully legalised, and the upcoming FDA decision on MDMA-assisted therapy. Joe and Kyle highlight how this shifting landscape requires innovative training approaches that integrate both traditional therapy methods and newer, more flexible models that embrace non-directive frameworks. The podcast also delves into the challenges of the current lack of standardised accreditation for psychedelic therapists. With new state regulations beginning to take shape, there is hope that these standards will provide clearer guidelines for training future facilitators. Throughout the conversation, Joe and Kyle stress the importance of ongoing personal development and community support for those guiding others through psychedelic experiences. Facilitators must engage in their own inner work, cultivate patience, and seek mentorship to ensure ethical responsibility and trauma-informed care. Ultimately, the episode underscores the complexity of psychedelic therapy and the need for facilitators to be not only skilled in therapeutic techniques but also deeply aware of the broader cultural and ethical implications of working with psychedelics. For those interested in pursuing a career in this field, the episode provides information about Psychedelics Today's training programs, including their comprehensive 12-month course. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joe Moore co-founded Psychedelics Today in 2016 with Kyle Buller. As CEO, Joe has co-created one of the planet's best-known psychedelic podcasts and training platforms. He combines over 20 years of avid psychedelic study and training with over 20 years of experience in software and multinational project management. Joe is a leading expert in transpersonal breathwork, a board member of the Psychedelic and Pain Association and the Psychedelic Medicine Coalition, and a sought-after international speaker on the intersecting subjects of psychedelic medicine and healing, breathwork, drug policy, medical innovation, international justice, and environmentalism. Kyle's interest in exploring non-ordinary states of consciousness began at the age of 16 when he suffered a traumatic snowboarding accident. After this near-death experience, Kyle's life changed dramatically. Kyle subsequently earned his B.A. in Transpersonal Psychology from Burlington College, where he focused on studying the healing potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness by exploring shamanism, Reiki, local medicinal plants and plant medicine, Holotropic Breathwork, and psychedelic psychotherapy. In this episode, Joe and Kyle interview Lenny Gibson, Ph.D.: philosopher, Grof-certified Holotropic Breathwork® facilitator, 20-year professor of transpersonal psychology at Burlington College, and the reason Joe and Kyle met many years ago. He talks about his early LSD experiences and how his interest in the philosophy of Plato and Alfred North Whitehead provided a framework and language for understanding a new mystical world where time and space were abstractions. He believes that while culture sees the benefits of psychedelics in economic terms, the biggest takeaway from non-ordinary states is learning that value is the essence of everything. And as this is being released on Bicycle Day, he discusses Albert Hofmann's discovery and whether or not it's fair to say that Hofmann intentionally had the experience he did on that fateful day. He also discusses: The end of Cartesian thinking and the need for a new understanding of reality that incorporates the insights of quantum mechanics How philosophy has been taught as an intellectual endeavor, and how we need to embrace the practical and conceptual side of life John Dewey and quantitative thinking, William James and pragmatism, and was Aristotle a Platonist? The novelty of the creation of LSD, and how it gave us a path to a mystical experience that wasn't culturally bound and more! For links, head to the show notes page.

This episode of the Plant Medicine Podcast features a conversation with Kyle Buller on psychedelics and breathwork. Kyle is co-founder and host of the Psychedelics Today podcast and he has studied breathwork since October 2010 with Lenny and Elizabeth Gibson of Dreamshadow Transpersonal Breathwork. Kyle earned his BA in transpersonal psychology from Burlington College where he focused on the healthing potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness, exploring topics such as shamanism, reiki, plant medicine, and holotropic breathwork. He has also earned an MS in clinical mental health counseling with emphasis in somatic psychology and has since worked with at-risk teens in crisis and individuals experiencing an early episode of psychosis. Kyle opens this discussion by providing a basic definition of breathwork and sharing his own journey with this modality. He discusses how breathwork can refer to a wide variety of practices, but what unites these disparate techniques is utilizing the breath to induce specific physiological states and experiences. The holotropic style of breathwork has roots in transpersonal psychology and the work of Stanislav Grof and it is this modality which is often compared to psychedelic experiences. Kyle discusses how holotropic breathwork can be an incredibly powerful practice for trauma-healing and inducing visceral experiences—similar to the classical psychedelics. He recounts his own experiences with this practice, describing how he was able to relive the experience of being born in the state conditioned by the method of breathing. Due to the synergy with the psychedelic experience, Kyle mentions that there is a lot of potential for breathwork to help individuals integrate or prepare for psychedelic experiences, as well as being a powerful tool for clinicians involved in psychedelic-psychotherapy to better understand the non-ordinary states of consciousness their patients will be experiencing.  Because of the wide variety of breathwork techniques, Kyle discusses the possibilities of tailoring practices to the specific experiences of a client. Everyone has a unique “window of tolerance” depending on their background and constitution, and some people will benefit more from techniques which downregulate the nervous system and allow for peace and relaxation, while others may find more value in techniques which are highly stimulating and provide deeper, emotionally complex experiences that allow for self-exploration.   In this episode: What breathwork is an how it relates to psychedelics The origins of holotropic breathwork and Stanislav Grof's transpersonal framework Breathwork vs meditation How to use breathwork to integrate and prepare for psychedelic experiences The effects of different types of breathing on the nervous system   Quotes: “[Breathwork] offered a really great tool for training, for understanding how to sit with people in non-ordinary states of consciousness.”  [8:49] “Some breathing techniques, like these more deeply cathartic techniques, they're bringing up a lot of emotional memory and people are starting to work through a lot of somatic sensations, they are working through trauma.” [13:38] “We really need to look at somebody's whole picture, where they're at, how they could potentially benefit, look at their nervous system, attune to that, and really think about what they could tolerate, what's going on in somebody's psyche.” [30:29] “The breath is this flexible tool, it's a vehicle—we can help to regulate our nervous system with it and explore it.” [39:38]   Links: Psychedelics Today Psychedelics Today Education Center SettingSun Wellness Dreamshadow Transpersonal Breathwork Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

Lenny Gibson presented a lecture during the event about the brief history of psychedelics in the Western world -- surveying the ancient Greek mysteries to the current contemporary psychedelic culture. "Blessed is he who, having seen these rites, undertakes the way beneath the Earth. He knows the end of life, as well as its divinely granted beginning." Pindar Creatures for a day! What is a man? What is he not? A dream of a shadow Is our mortal being. But when there comes to menA gleam of splendour given of heaven,Then rests on them a light of glory And blessed are their days. Pindar I suddenly became strangely inebriated. The external world became changed as in a dream. Objects appeared to gain in relief; they assumed unusual dimensions; and colours became more glowing. Even self-perception and the sense of time were changed. When the eyes were closed, coloured pictures flashed past in a quickly changing kaleidoscope. After a few hours, the not unpleasant inebriation, which had been experienced whilst I was fully conscious, disappeared. What had caused this condition? Download In this episode of Psychedelics Today, Joe interviews the co-host of the show, Kyle Buller.  As hosts of the show, we thought that it would be fun to dig a little deeper into our own personal narratives to give our listeners an idea of who we are.  This episode offers the opportunity for Kyle to share his story about how he became interested in psychedelics and other non-ordinary states of consciousness. From Kyle of Psychedelics Today I became interested in non-ordinary states of consciousness at an young age.  One event that sparked my interest in these topics stems from suffering a near-death experience when I was teenager.  This experience changed the trajectory of my life and also left me with asking myself many questions about life and death. Tune into this episode as Joe asks me about my history with non-ordinary states of consciousness, the development of a psychedelic course at Burlington College, my interest in Holotropic Breathwork, and much more. Thanks for listening!

Monday Night arrived again, and we covered a bunch of different things. Starting with a comment received in regard to the 'Free Hugs' story we covered in Friday Night's opening, Then we hit the ground running with an experiment that is currently looking for funding in order to fly a 747 into a plant to prove or disprove 9/11 theories once and for all. Afterwards, we take a leap on over to Cleveland where some hipster is getting Progressive women to get naked with mirrors in order to make some artsy statement about the Sacred Feminine...but it just doesn't impress me. This type of art doesn't impress me at all; it's dystopian art if you ask me, a faked connection between techno-zombies and ancient philosophy. Where else did we go? Updates on the FDA and Vaping, which lead to talks about medical marijuana, and then back to the FDA finally. Somewhere in there we covered an article outlining how Bernie Sanders' wife is responsible for destroying the financial future of Burlington College. Until we meet again on Tuesday, friends. For decades, people have said the United States has treated Latin America as a project for exploit and economic expansion. Even do-gooders see the global south as deserving of unilateral help or charity.  But social change activists say the tables have turned.  On this edition, we'll hear from experts who say – especially in times of crisis – there's a lot to learn from social movements in Latin America. Featuring: Marina Sitrin, author and attorney; Ben Dangl, Burlington College in Vermont professor; Mario Murillo, author & Hofstra University professor; Oscar Estrada, Honduran filmmaker & 2010 NarcoNews School of Authentic Journalism participant.  Special thanks to Between the Lines at WPKN Radio in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
