Send us a Text Message.Guest host Courtney Romanowski unlocks the power of creativity and emotional healing with our special guest, Bed Hermin, a licensed mental health counselor and registered expressive arts therapist. Discover how Bed's educational journey at Lesley University and the rich history of the expressive arts therapy program shape their approach to therapy. Bed guides us through the innovative practices of intermodal, polyaesthetic embodiment, highlighting how these methods foster self-exploration and healing in ways that transcend traditional art forms.Ever wondered how thoughts manifest in the brain, or how attention and energy movement can improve emotional well-being? We'll demystify these concepts, using therapeutic practices like Internal Family Systems (IFS) to illustrate the dynamic interplay of mind and body. By shifting the focus to societal challenges and the role of interdependence, we explore how life's conditions influence mental health and why the goal is not to "fix" clients but to nurture an environment of healing and compassion. Finally, we tackle the practical and ethical dilemmas faced by therapists, from the financial constraints of private practice to the systemic obstacles in community health. Through the lens of expressive arts therapy, we envision a future where creative, qualitative therapies gain the recognition they deserve alongside evidence-based methods. And if you're on a quest to find the right therapist, this episode underscores the importance of finding someone who truly supports you, highlighting the transformative potential of expressive arts therapy. Wife. Mother. Teacher. ARTIST. For as long as I can remember, my free spirit has been drawn to the arts. Creative expression is the language of my soul, and so throughout my life, I've spoken through many different art forms. I am a Sagittarius; honest, adventurous and full of fire. It makes sense to me that photography is where I found my light, you could say it was written in the stars. “Photography", in the literal sense, means "light drawings". I began exploring the world through my lens in high school where my passion was largely fostered by my father. Without access to a dark room, my dad and I built a functioning dark room in the basement of our home. After high school, I quickly realized that photography was how I would want to make my way in the world. I attended Lesley College of Art & Design (formerly The Art Institute of Boston) where I studied documentary photography; the art of telling stories with light drawings. Some days it feels as though I've lived many different lives, seeking thrills and chasing dreams overseas and back. Through it all, one thing has remained true, I have always followed the light. As a longtime yoga practitioner, I found a home for my practice at The Energy Barre where I soon began teaching group fitness and later, yoga. It was there where the owner, Julianna Curtis, gave me the ever so gentle shove into photographing the wellness & fitness industry. An industry so very centered on igniting one's inner light. Through these experiences, I have found my calling to document the authenticity of life in general. Today, I am happily married to the love of my life, with two wild little boys. Together we live on the ocean in the north shore of Massachusetts. It is here, in this chapter of my life, that I found my true vocation: painting photos for you to share your own light with the world. Towards an Age-Friendly World with Wendy Miller “As we get older, we use both sides of our brain, not in a compensatory way, but in a synthetic way.”— Wendy Miller, Ph.D. ATR-BC, LCPAT, REAT, LPC, BCPC Thank you for joining us for This is Getting Old: Moving Towards an Age-Friendly World podcast. This special series is sponsored by a 2020 George Washington (GW) University’s University Seminar Series award, Towards Age-Friendly, and is brought to you by MelissaBPhD in collaboration with GW’s Center for Aging, Health, and Humanities. It’s been proven that when people challenge their minds, have a sense of mastery and control, when their social engagement is increased, they not only do better, they feel better. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Wendy Miller, author of Sky Above Clouds: Finding Our Way Through Creativity, Aging, and Illness. The key areas we covered in this episode: Understanding the work of Wendy’s late husband, Dr. Gene Cohen. Understanding the term “creative aging.” How the arts and art-making are like “chocolate to the brain." The “Four S’s in Age-Friendly Creative Aging” and their importance. Part One of ‘Towards an Age-Friendly World with Dr. Wendy Miller’ An important piece of creativity, particularly as we get older, is legacy work, what we do with the memories and the archives of people we love. She felt a strong responsibility because Gene Cohen had many unpublished works, considering both of them are into creativity, health, and aging. When does a creative aging start, and how do we come to understand creativity? The thing is, the word creativity stirs up everything. Some people would say, "Well, you're creative because you're an artist, but what about me?" Our understanding of creativity with aging has been limited. As a result of the heavy legacy of negative myths and stereotypes about aging (ageism), all of which have denied or trivialized our creative capacity and the accomplishments that we have in the second half of our life. “Aging is not just about surviving. It's about growing in the face of diversity.” — Wendy Miller, Ph.D. ATR-BC, LCPAT, REAT, LPC, BCPC In 2001, Dr. Gene wrote the book: The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life. It was the first book to articulate this new paradigm about looking not just at the problems of aging, but at this emerging field of creative aging. C=ME2 is Creativity = Mass of Knowledge + Experience2 His book documents discoveries in neuroscience that radically challenge these conventional assumptions about aging, and aging is really the best example of how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There are built-in developmental drives that push us toward creative expression, and they push us towards psychological growth throughout our life cycle. His research doesn't just respond to aging. It's trying to shape aging. Part Two of ‘Towards an Age-Friendly World with Wendy Miller’ Our brain is continually sculpting itself. The aging brain isn't running out of gas, it’s moving into all-wheel-drive. This post-formal thinking transforms our life. It transforms our life experience into what we commonly call wisdom. The arts are like “chocolate to the brain”. Creativity is built into the human species. The arts can be singing, dancing, cooking, gardening and also giving back to the community and volunteering. But creativity can also be designing a new lecture, a new way to teach someone how to do something, or learning a new skill that lets you do either of those things in an innovative way. What it boils down to is that as we get older, we use both sides of our brain not in a compensatory way but in a synthetic way. The more you use it, the more you are protected against Alzheimer's disease. COVID has challenged everyone to be creative with how we connect with each other using technology. “Creativity encourages these evolving strengths. They don't just happen on their own.” — Wendy Miller, Ph.D. ATR-BC, LCPAT, REAT, LPC, BCPC How would you feel if more older adults get involved in creative artworks? Aging is not just about surviving. It’s about growing meaning in the face of adversity. Creativity optimizes problem-solving and affects interpersonal connections that leads us into our strengths. What makes This Is Getting Old podcast exciting is that it includes a focus on the humanities. This is a case for qualitative medicine - use of narrative, listening, writing, case histories, keen observation, and empathy, and imagination - to look at strength and satisfactions because they are the essence of human strength and resilience. Many people in the world do not have the right image of aging. Intergenerational creative activities and interactions have the ability to change that. As a society, if we only look at the Signs and Symptoms of aging, we will miss the Strengths and Satisfaction with aging. It matters because creativity encourages these strengths that lead to increased satisfaction with our lives as we age. Older adults have life stories that benefit younger adults, stories of resilience and overcoming hardship. Media outlets have reported many older adults are actually weathering COVID better than younger generations. Many older adults also are still experiencing higher levels of emotional well-being than younger adults. We can all learn from this group of Americans that are often age-segregated, and we need to find intergenerational ways to do just that - to benefit both older AND younger adults. Being age-friendly means things are friendly for everyone. Wendy ends the interview with these words: "The creative faculty is what draws us to life, calls forth our love, our resilience, our strength, and our capacity to choose not only life itself but to choose what enlivens us. Sky above clouds opens us not only to potential, but to the essential.” Wendy Miller Bio: Wendy Miller, Ph.D. ATR-BC, LCPAT, REAT, LPC, BCPC is a writer, sculptor, educator, and mental health provider in expressive arts therapy. Becky Chambers is back talking about how seniors can improve their lives with Whole Body Vibration. With whole body vibration, you can improve your mood, reach your optimal weight, increase circulation, reduce inflammation and joint pain, but most importantly, have increased energy to live your life to the fullest. Using a whole body vibration machine is simple! Unbox it, plug it in, stand on the platform, set the settings, and turn it on. The most beautiful aspect of this machine is you do not have to be superfit to use it. If you can stand up, you are set to go. A workout takes between thirty seconds and ten minutes max! You may be old enough to remember the reducing machine of the nineteen seventies? You know you'd stand on the platform and place the belt around your hips and let the machine do the work? It was fantastic! With today's machine, you no longer need the belt, and it exercises your whole body in no time at all. Plus, the machine's footprint is so small you can place it anywhere in your home. No need to visit the garage for your exercise unless you just want to! We talk about What is whole body vibrationHow to use the systemBenefits of the system for seniorsWho Olympic athletes have used this systemThe gentlleness of the system on your bodyHow the machine helps with cognitive processingHow to increase your bone densityBetter sex lifeThe right machine for seniorsHow the machine assists with decreased overall pain Becky Chambers is a natural health practitioner, teacher, author, and the president and owner of Vibrant Health. The episode opens with a woman standing in Hedy Lamarr's shoes. Hedley walks by, correcting her pronunciation as he heads into the theater. In the lobby, some cows are milling around behind theater ropes. Hedley rushes to the counter to buy some Raisinets. As he makes his way down the aisle, he accidentally tries to sit on someone before finding an empty seat. The movie is already playing on the screen. Hedley looks up and sees Bart arriving on horseback outside the theater. He spits out a mouthful of Raisinets and makes for the exit. He leaves the theater, only to be confronted by Bart. Bart says, "Ok, Lamarr, go for your gun!" Hedley professes to being unarmed. Bart drops his gun and suggests they settle it man-to-man. That's when Hedley remembers he is armed and tries to shoot Sheriff Bart. Bart dives forward, grabs his gun in mid-roll, takes aim and shoots Hedley in the crotch. Our guest today is Chris Korman. As the episode opens, the rioters are still spilling out of the Warner Brother studios. Hedley Lamarr makes his way across the street to hail a cab. A man on the corner, not associated with the movie, managed to make it into the movie. As the cab pulls up, Hedley demands, "Drive me off this picture." Even though the theater is a 16 minute drive, it's suddenly late at night when Hedley arrives. He pushes his way to the box office and buys a ticket to see Blazing Saddles. The episode opens with the fight continuing to spill into the Warner Brothers commissary. The fight takes on a frenetic pace. The film speeds up to go along with it. We point out the actor playing Hitler is at the very back, standing on the counter alternating his heils. A tour group gets appropriately pie-struck on their tour. Then Taggart gets smashed by Mongo and flies across the counter to the register. Suddenly, the men's room opens and Hedley mouths a naughty word before retreating back inside. A moment later he re-emerges, the remnants of a pie dripping from his face. He begins to make his way out of the commissary. We end the minute with the rioters spilling out onto the streets of Burbank. Our Guest Our guest today is Chris Korman. The episode opens just after Taggart hits Buddy in the gut. One of the dancers yells out, "They've hit, Buddy! Come on girls!" With that, the brawl, continues, now with the men in top hats and tails joining in the fray. We discuss several vignettes within the minute and as the episode comes to an end, we move to the commissary. Several actors are on their lunch break, still in costume from their various film projects. In the foreground, a man dressed as Hitler is eating a sandwich. His companion asks how many days he has left? He replies, "They lose me at the end of the bunker scene." At that moment, a man is thrown through the glass of the door to the commissary. Courtney, Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist shares about her postpartum experience of injury and postpartum depression and how it led her to create the Momma Strong Program. Momma Strong’s purpose is to redefine the scope of prenatal and postpartum health through specialized intelligent fitness. Courtney openly discusses motherhood, self care and how showing up is good enough. Our Pelvic Floor is super important to us as women. Your body cannot perform if the pelvic floor is not integrated. That is the root of all of your movement especially as a woman. Our brain and body our ever connected and when we are struggling injury or pain postpartum than can affect our mood. Listen to the pain and be your own detective about your body. Momma Strong is committed to the business of enoughism, which is the belief that you don’t need fixing, but that you deserve integration. You don’t have time for anything extra and Momma Strong gets motherhood and gets that. Become stronger more effectively and efficiently with Momma Strong. So You Know She Is Legit... Courtney’s exposure to biomechanics and rehabilitative exercise started in her early childhood, as an elite level gymnast, kayaker, and ballet dancer. At age 16, she left home to pursue her professional career with The Houston Ballet, where she remained for 5 years until a severe ankle injury forced her to retire. After retirement, she transitioned immediately into a two-year course of study in rehabilitative exercise and Pilates, under the supervision of nationally renowned Pilates instructors Bryan Peters and James Harren, who had trained with the original colleague of Joseph Pilates himself. She then earned her certification through the Pilates Method Alliance and became a top-rated trainer for the following 6 years. Following the birth of her first child, however, she began to suffer from injuries related to pregnancy and childbirth, none of which her prior core training was able to resolve. This realization led her to study with Thomas Myers, Yamuna Zake, Esther Gokhale, and Stuart McGill, all prominent leaders in the field of spine health and pelvic stabilization. From there, Courtney became certified as a personal trainer through National Academy of Sports Medicine and soon after was granted their advanced certification as a Corrective Exercise Specialist. She also carries a Prenatal and Postpartum specialization from NASM and multiple certifications in pelvic rehabilitation, injury prevention, and activated release therapy. Her unique method as taught in MommaStrong is the product of this comprehensive background, helping mothers all over the world finely tone their body’s through clinically approved, and feasible workouts that instigate an adventurous life through strength that matters. Download This talk was recorded live in Bolton, Vermont during a MAPS Psychedelic Dinner fundraising event in May 2016. Lenny Gibson presented a lecture during the event about the brief history of psychedelics in the Western world -- surveying the ancient Greek mysteries to the current contemporary psychedelic culture. "Blessed is he who, having seen these rites, undertakes the way beneath the Earth. He knows the end of life, as well as its divinely granted beginning." Pindar Creatures for a day! What is a man? What is he not? A dream of a shadow Is our mortal being. But when there comes to menA gleam of splendour given of heaven,Then rests on them a light of glory And blessed are their days. Pindar I suddenly became strangely inebriated. The external world became changed as in a dream. Objects appeared to gain in relief; they assumed unusual dimensions; and colours became more glowing. Even self-perception and the sense of time were changed. When the eyes were closed, coloured pictures flashed past in a quickly changing kaleidoscope. After a few hours, the not unpleasant inebriation, which had been experienced whilst I was fully conscious, disappeared. What had caused this condition? Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about Morgellons, what it is, and how to approach treatment. About My Guest: Dr. Savely graduated in 1972 from the University of Maryland with Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Music. In 1978 she earned a Master’s degree in educational philosophy from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. In 1985, she enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Texas at Austin and in 1988 completed her Bachelor’s of nursing degree. Dr. Savely worked as an RN for the next 10 years in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, urgent care, and family practice. She received her Master’s degree in Nursing and certification as a family nurse practitioner in 1998. During this time, she became interested in and progressively more knowledgeable about Lyme disease. By 2003, 80% of her practice was devoted to Lyme patients. At about this same time, she became aware of a strange new disease called Morgellons disease. When word got out through a local news story that she was helping these patients, people with the symptoms of Morgellons disease started coming to her by the dozens. In 2004, she was honored with the title of Texas Nurse Practitioner of the Year for her work with Lyme and Morgellons disease. Dr. Savely began to publish articles, do presentations at conferences and appear in the media about her work with Lyme and Morgellons disease. She was accepted into the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society and sat on the advisory Boards of the Texas Lyme Disease Association and the Morgellons Research Foundation. Doctors in Austin had a very narrow view of Lyme disease. They were convinced that it did not exist in Texas and thought that even if it were contracted elsewhere, a simple week of antibiotics would totally cure it. Many of them resented the fact that a nurse practitioner had the nerve to use diagnosis and treatment methods that went against the prevailing medical paradigm. From 2003 to 2006, at the instigation of the Texas Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Savely endured a drawn-out investigation by her regulatory board, the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. The Board investigation finally ended with no more than trivial findings and what amounted to a “slap on the wrist”. In 2005, having seen the “writing on the wall” and realizing that her days of practicing in Texas might soon be over, Dr. Savely had opened an auxiliary office in San Francisco. Although many doctors in Austin believed in what Dr. Savely was doing and even referred patients to her, none would agree to collaborate with her for fear of raising a red flag with the medical Board. Because Dr. Savely could find no other physician in Austin willing to assume the risk of practicing with her she moved her practice full-time to San Francisco in 2006. In 2009, Dr. Savely earned a doctorate degree in nursing practice from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where she was honored with the Dean’s Legacy Award. In March, 2011 she moved her practice from San Francisco to Washington, DC. In 2016, she published her book "Morgellons: The legitimization of a disease: A Factual Guide by the World's Leading Clinical Expert" which is available on Amazon.com. Key Takeaways: - What is Morgellons and what are the common symptoms? - Why is Morgellons not "delusional parasitosis"? - What is the connection between Lyme disease and Morgellons? - What microbes are commonly observed in Morgellons? - What are some of the myths about Morgellons that should be dispelled? - Is Morgellons contagious? - What are the fibers, or more correctly, filaments made of? - How is Morgellons treated? - What are some things people should explore to lighten the load on the immune system? - What is the prognosis for someone struggling with Morgellons? About the book: As a college freshman business major suffering from a variety of anxiety-related maladies, Brian Leaf stumbled into an elective: yoga. It was 1989. All his classmates were female. And men did not yet generally “cry, hug, or do yoga.” But yoga soothed and calmed Leaf as nothing else had. As his hilarious and wise tale shows, Leaf embarked on a quest for health and happiness — visiting yoga studios around the country and consulting Ayurvedic physicians, swamis, and even (accidentally) a prostitute. Twenty-one years later, he teaches yoga and meditation and is the beloved founder of a holistic tutoring center that helps students whose ailments he once shared. About the author: Brian Leaf, M.A., is the author of eleven books, including Misadventures of a Garden State Yogi, Name That Movie!, Defining Twilight, and McGraw-Hill’sTop 50 Skills for a Top Score. He is the only man alive to have written both a yoga memoir and multiple test-prep guides. He is not sure if this is a noble or dubious distinction. Brian is Director of the New Leaf Learning Center in Massachusetts, where he has helped thousands of students from throughout the United States manage ADD and overcome test and math phobias. Brian graduated from Georgetown University in 1993 with a B.A. in Business, English, and Theology. In 1999, he completed a Masters through Lesley College specializing in yoga and ayurveda for Attention Deficit Disorder. Brian is certified as a Yoga Instructor, Ayurvedic Practitioner, Massage Therapist, Energyworker, and Holistic Educator, and he is an avid meditator. He has also dabbled with Bach Flower Essences, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Reiki, Shiatsu, and Tai Chi. Can you top that? So what’s the connection between yoga and test-prep? Let’s just say that one of Brian’s first yoga teaching gigs was at the ETS corporation (Educational Testing Service) in Princeton, NJ. They’re the folks who make the SAT. So now Brian gets paid hundreds of dollars per hour to share what he learned while the test-makers were half asleep in relaxation pose.
