Rethinking waste, the microplastics problem and women in science with Dr. Amanda Parkes, Chief Innovation Officer at PANGAIA

Why We Care

In this week's episode I'm chatting with Dr. Amanda Parkes, the Chief Innovation Officer at PANGAIA and a materials engineering lecturer at Harvard. Amanda is really difficult to introduce in a few sentences as she has experience across such a wide range of sectors, from computer science, mechanical engineering, and biotech, all the way to fashion and material innovation. I met her when I was working on the Impact team at PANGAIA, and one of my favourite memories from that time was the science sessions she would run on Friday afternoons to introduce us to all the amazing science behind the material innovations we were working with. I have to admit that growing up I did have a bit of a love-hate relationship with science, and Amanda was one of the people who made me rediscover and love that space! We spoke about how we can rethink our approach to waste and how by looking at places of abundance in nature we can find “new” materials to work with – through a process she refers to as high-tech naturalism. An example of this is FLWRDWN, an alternative to animal and synthetic down made using waste wildflowers. She also explained how microplastics are shed when we wash some synthetic materials, how these end up polluting our rivers, lakes and oceans - and what you can do to avoid this.Want to dive deeper?Learn more about PANGAIA's innovations on pangaia.comFLWRDWN https://eu.pangaia.com/pages/flowerdownPicture A Scientist documentary - https://www.pictureascientist.com/Fashion rental platforms: By Rotation, Hurr, Rotaro, Rent The RunwayLittle linksAmanda on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaparkes/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.Thank you for caring and sending you lots of love! Today you are invited to the Reign holiday party because this is the final episode of the year! So get your drink of choice poured and prepare to listen to Joy Sunday who is starring in the biggest show on the planet right now, Netflix's reboot of The Addams Family, ‘Wednesday'. If you haven't watched Wednesday yet, the show follows the infamous Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) as she joins Nevermore, an eerie institute for society's outsiders and meets her new nemesis the Queen Bee Bianca, played by Joy. What ensues is a show dripping in drama, mystery and rivalry so it's no surprise ‘Wednesday' has amassed over a billion watch hours in the first three weeks of its release and has become the second most watched english speaking show on Netflix - EVER! Joining us fresh from the show's unprecedented success and on her podcast debut (we are honoured!) Joy tells me about how the show arrived at a tough point in her career, the intense filming process in Romania, and how playing Bianca empowered her in real life, too. Don't worry Joy also spills the tea on *that* iconic fencing scene, the season finale AND those contact lenses too… Joy also talks about her self love journey, how journaling has influenced her life, how the ‘Wednesday' cast have come together to form anoffscreen family, and how she has always found the strength to keep going and never give up on her dreams. Plus there is a great rule to live by, dug from the depths of Joy's teen journal which I absolutely love and know you will too. I loved talking to Joy so I hope you love this episode! And as this is the final episode of the year I just wanted to say THANK YOU for listening to Reign, whether this is your first episode or one of many you have listened to, it's so great to have you in the Reign family. Kate has such an iconic back catalogue of movies from her rom-com era, ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days' alongside Mathew McConaughey (one of the best onscreen duos of all time - AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT?!?) to ‘Bride Wars' with fellow queen, Anne Hathaway. But it was for her scene stealing turn in ‘Almost Famous' that Kate won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar. Now Kate is BACK with the ‘Knives Out' sequel, ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' which is landing on Netflix on 23rd December. Daniel Craig returns as the super sleuth, Benoit Blanc to investigate a murder which occurs after a tech billionaire invites his friends to his private Greek island. It's got twists, it's got turns and Kate stars as the tone deaf, model turned questionable entrepreneur, Birdie alongside former Reign guest, Madelyn Cline, Ed Norton and Janelle Monáe. Sitting down with one of my idols was even better than I could have imagined. In this episode Kate gets very honest and tells me about the time she had to truly face herself and do that tricky self-work. Kate also shares some wise lessons that she has learnt from one of the great teachers in her life, her mother Goldie Hawn. It's stuff that I think we all need to hear! Hindsight 2020: Tribulations and silver linings during a global pandemic Hindsight 2020: Tribulations and silver linings during a global pandemic is a collection of non-fiction short stories that feature unfiltered first-person accounts of the incredible, heartbreaking, and, more often than not, catastrophic effects 2020 had on people's lives. Hindsight 2020 offers an overview of the big events of 2020 through the moving personal stories of 10 people from around the globe.2020 was a life-changing, historic year, largely because of the pandemic, but coronavirus is not the main focus of the book. More on Fani: I live and breathe beauty, value personal connections, and above all - authenticity is at the core of my brand. Growing up, I had acne (I've had it for over a decade) and remembered seeing all the perfectly polished images on Instagram and in magazines. It was devastating and made me hate myself and my skin. In the last few years, I vowed to be as honest as possible, showing my skin with all its so-called "imperfections," and if I manage to help even one person, that will be enough! In my writing, it's essential to provide value to the reader, so all my pieces are always well-research and include expert opinions. I love reading scientific journals and learning about new ingredients, beauty treatments, and more. I'm very creative, organized, and a bit chaotic! BREAKEVEN is a London-based blog written and edited by Fani Mari, a beauty, lifestyle, and fashion journalist. With a master's degree in Fashion Journalism from Central Saint Martins and various contributions to publications such as Coveteur, HuffPost US, Cosmopolitan UK + US, The Independent, Glamour UK, Byrdie, MINE Magazine, Citizen Femme, Global Blue, 1Granary, Design Scene, D'Scene Magazine, Drapers and others. This blog is a personal diary, a compilation of product reviews, traveling, outfit shots, inspiration, general thoughts, and everything in between. This blog is mainly about beauty and skincare as well as fashion. Fani has seen the catastrophic effects of fast fashion over the years of working in the industry and has always favored up-and-coming designers and high-quality materials that last the test of time; hence she's involved in a peer-to-peer rental platform By Rotation, to add to the circular economy movement and focusing on sharing rather than owning. I am BEYOND EXCITED that we are joined by my OG Idol, Billie Piper, who made the first album I ever bought - fun fact! Believe it or not, Billie first burst into our lives 25 years ago - so this is technically the Silver Jubilee of Queen Billie, which should be a national holiday, right? As a 15 year old popstar, Billie became the youngest person ever to go straight to number one with the eternal bop, Because We Want To before going on to land two more number one singles with Girlfriend and Day & Night. How her hit, Honey 2 The Bee wasn't ever a number one is still an injustice that haunts me until this day. But here we are… Billie then turned to acting with the comeback of Doctor Who starring as the Doctor's assistant, Rose Tyler opposite Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and The Secret Diary of A Call Girl. Billie even continued to set records with her new career path by winning all six of the possible best stage actress awards, including an Olivier award, for her stage debut in Yerma. Now Billie is back with the second season of the BAFTA nominated TV show, I Hate Suzie, which she co-created with Succession writer, Lucy Prebble. If you haven't watched the first season of the show, it follows the former child star, Suzie Pickles as her life implodes when private images of her leak online. And let me tell you RIGHT NOW, the second season is just as good as the first with more twists and turns for our anti-hero, Suzie. I Hate Suzie Too is available on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW from 20 December.Today Billie joins us to talk about being a horny dancer (same here!) - tis the season, after all - and how exploring anxiety and mental health on I Hate Suzie has impacted her own well being. Billie also opens up about how seeing her 14 year old son grow up has made her reflect further on her own teenage stardom and the advice she wishes she could go back and give her popstar self. She also shares some great words about balance and pressure which I think we all need to hear and will relate to, and about finding a new level of confidence turning 40 this year. Billie Piper is still THE coolest person on the planet in my mind, so I hope you love this chat just as much as me as it really shows just how this icon has managed to stay relevant for a quarter of a century across so many disciplines. Today we are joined by Chloë Grace Moretz and this episode is all about setting personal boundaries, stopping people pleasing, letting go of people who no longer serve YOU and saying “f**k it!” Now that's the spirit! Believe it or not but Chloë has been acting since the age of 5, and now at 25 years old has already got 50 acting credits on her CV (talk about booked and busy!) including the epic ‘Kick-Ass' movies, the chilling ‘Carrie', the comedy hit, ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising' and the epic LGBTQIA+ movie, ‘The Miseducation of Cameron Post'. Now she is starring in the blockbuster new Amazon Prime Video TV show, ‘The Peripheral'. Adapted for the screen from William Gibson's sci-fi novel, the show follows Chloë's character Flynne, as she unearths through gaming, a connection to an alternative reality with a dark future. The drama is brilliant but you might get a headache trying to figure out WTAF is going on - if you are anything like me! I have also always admired Chloë's advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and encouraging people to get out there and vote but I wasn't quite prepared for how much I was going to love talking to Chloë. Buckle up for a lot of laughter and some great life lessons in this episode! Today Chloë talks about growing up in the entertainment industry and the amount of reverse ageism and sexism she has faced in her career to date. Now, firmly in her own power and voice, Chloë also shares some amazing words on building boundaries and letting go of ‘people pleasing,' and relationships that no longer serve you. That is something I have ALWAYS struggled with so this turned into quite the therapy session for me, so I hope it helps you too! We also talk about the sheer power of Miley Cryus's song ‘The Climb' - it's one of the great underrated classics of our time, let's be honest - and Chloë shares how she is a certified gamer in real life too, who loves to, ‘f**k s**t up!' Watch out Super Mario! I love Chloë's new ‘f**k it,' ethos for life so I hope it also inspires you to let go, and do what is right for YOU in every given situation. Eshita Kabra-Davies felt guilty on her Indian honeymoon. She wanted to show her husband her culture and where she came from. But she'd noticed the textile waste polluting towns while she worried about her outfits and holiday clothes. She felt like she was part of the problem, participating in the polluting of her birthplace!Compelled to do something about it, Eshita founded the social fashion renting app By Rotation in April 2019. Since then, it's become the U.K.'s leading rental platform. What separates it from others, though, is its' peer-to-peer concept that allows users (known as rotators) to earn money from their wardrobe by renting other people's items and lending out their own. Users feel good about looking good and helping save the planet at the same time.Eshita came up with the idea for the app while still working full-time in the finance world. After researching the market to see if her idea could work, she started it as a side hustle and built a close-knit community around it focused on change towards a sustainable fashion future.Today, she joins Sam to talk about her company, the importance of community building for her business, and the climate impact of fashion and what can be done about it. Did you hit the high-street at the weekend and pick up something new to wear on your summer holiday? How many times are you going to wear your hot new look? A 2019 survey found most outfits are only worn an average of seven times before they're thrown away – this week's guest on Tea with the Changemakers, Eshita Kabra-Davies, is trying to get that average beyond thirty! Eshita is the founder and CEO of By Rotation, the world's first social fashion rental marketplace! Users, or rotators, can rent and lend designer pieces directly from each other on this sharing network, fostering a much more sustainable way of consuming fashion.  When Eshita was preparing for her honeymoon, a big part of that was curating what she would wear! Whilst on her travels around India, Eshita was hugely moved by the amount of textile waste she witnessed and came to the realisation that nearly all the new clothes that she'd bought herself for the trip would get nowhere near the wear that they should – she felt that something needed to be done, and that something was By Rotation! Here at Social Change UK, we're all about disruption and challenging the status quo. We believe that By Rotation, with its circular approach to fashion consumption, could really shake up the textile industry and dramatically change the way we think about clothing! We think you'll agree that, after listening to this week's episode, Eshita Kabra-Davies not only has a huge passion for fashion, but for changing the world for the better as well! Cup only half full? Justin Rowlatt heads to the London offices of both these online platforms. Depop's Justine Porterie explains how their clothing resale app helped Gen Z take back control of their wardrobes and fall in love with second-hand clothes. Meanwhile Eshita Kabra-Davies, founder of By Rotation, retells how she came up with the concept of a high fashion rental app after seeing all the discarded garments piling up in her hometown in Rajasthan. These apps have grown enormously during the last two years of lockdowns, attracting millions of users, particularly teenagers. But Sarah Kent, editor at the Business of Fashion website, questions whether they can really make a dent in the sheer volume of clothes produced and disposed of every year. In this week's episode, I'm speaking to Eshita Kabra-Davies, founder of By Rotation, the worlds first social fashion rental app.The idea for By Rotation came to her during her honeymoon to Rajasthan, India, where she found herself reconsidering her relationship with fashion. She was in her suburban home town and had not been back for over 30 years. Eshita felt guilty for buying new clothes for her honeymoon as this made her feel she was part of a system that was adding to the textile waste. She wondered how she could help an average consumer make a difference, which is how the idea of By Rotation was birthed. A platform that allows users to ‘rent' their garments out to others, whether on a daily or weekly basis. The idea is to give everyday people something accessible and convenient that's an alternative to the often-high price points of many sustainable fashion labels.By Rotation first started out as Eshitas side hustle whilst she worked full-time at a hedge fund. She spent evenings and weekends creating the beta platform and attending sustainable fashion events in order to build up her network. When By Rotation hit certain targets She had set, She finally left her seven-year career in investment management. Not only are they the largest fashion rental platform in the U.K., but they are also a completely circular and sustainable model thanks to their focus on peer-to-peer and technology. You can follow Eshita on social @arentyoueshita and By Rotation @byrotationMy new book, Side Hustle in Progress: A Practical Guide to Kickstarting Your Business is published by HarperCollins and available to buy online and in all book shops.Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Side-Hustle-Progress-Practical-Kickstarting/dp/0008455007Audible: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Side-Hustle-Progress-Practical-Kickstarting/dp/B08NXTC5ZCWaterstones: https://www.waterstones.com/book/side-hustle-in-progress/elizabeth-ogabi/9780008455002You can find me on social: IG: @Forworkingladies @ElizabethOgabi Twitter: @Fwladies @ElizabethOgabi_You can sign up for my newsletter "The Snippet" here. In episode 245, Kestrel welcomes Eshita Kabra-Davies, the CEO and founder of By Rotation, to the show. A UK-based social fashion rental app and platform, By Rotation is dedicated to transforming the way we consume fashion. “I think no one's really attempted to make fashion rental about the sharing economy, to make it about women sharing with each other. It's always been seen more as a “oh, I want to wear designer clothing” or “oh, I want to wear something new” or “oh, I have a charity gala or a ball to go to”. It's always been for those sort of reasons — it's never really addressed the fact that we all have enough fashion in our existing wardrobes.” -Eshita Have you heard the recent discussion about how the rental market could have a worse impact on the planet than just throwing your clothes in the trash? It's been circulating around across the mainstream media after a new study was released in the journal - Environmental Research Letters. First of all — research within the fashion space is so important and necessary and needed. We are lacking in accumulated data as an industry, so it is always exciting to learn about new studies and the way they go about putting their findings together. At the same time, when it comes to research, there are going to be biases involved, every detail cannot be accounted for, and there will be some assumptions made. It's complex, yet important to continue to question and explore the nuance with the arrival of new data and new framings of analytics. When it comes to reports like this, it's very important to hear from individuals on different sides of the results and to listen to multiple perspectives. On this week's show, we talk with Eshita — the founder and CEO of By Rotation — on how they are working to make the sharing economy personal. For By Rotation, fashion rental is not another sales avenue to sell hundreds of dresses (to the rental company instead of the consumer) — it's instead an opportunity to allow us to use / rent what we already have in our own closets. Quotes & links from the conversation: “People are feeling pressure to always update their look, you know, always have something new happening in their lives — whether it's going to the newest restaurant or wearing the latest handbag or whatever — there's this pressure to always show new things. And I thought it would be so interesting if we could create a sharing economy around fashion, because fashion, turns out, is one of the most polluting industries in the world. It overtakes maritime and aviation industries combined — which is shocking because you would think that traveling and taking airplanes is the biggest contributor, but actually, it's what we wear every day.” -Eshita “Innovative recycling or extended use? Rental fashion is in the spotlight when it comes to climate footprint. Meanwhile, Christina Dean, of the charity Redress, argues that the potential for rental fashion marks a revolutionary step in the way we think about our clothing. Eshita Kabra, founder of By Rotation, the world's first social fashion rental app, says people around the world could easily solve the fashion industry's problem with the clothes already in their wardrobe.
