In this episode of the Healthcare Plus Podcast, Dan Collard welcomes Céu Cirne-Neves, MPA, FACHE. With over 25 years' experience as a healthcare executive, she now serves as a faculty member in the undergraduate and graduate health administration programs at Rutgers University. They discuss insights Céu has gained from her unusual path, which led her from her first job in healthcare marketing to chief administrative officer and finally to academia. At Rutgers she's observed major differences in today's students vs. those of years past (for instance: they're far more focused and specific on what they want, and very intentional about gaining the competencies and resources needed to achieve it).Céu shares her recent idea for drawing undecided students into the Healthcare Administration major by building an exploratory course based on Quint Studer's book The Calling: Why Healthcare is So Special. (“I feel healthcare is more than a job,” she says. “I'm trying to make it enticing for them to see the difference they can make through healthcare administration.”) Filled with practical takeaways, this episode will appeal to anyone seeking more understanding on what drives the next generation of Health Administration students, how to help them connect to their calling early, and how to develop and mentor them.About Céu Cirne-Neves, MPA, FACHECéu Cirne-Neves, MPA, FACHE, is a healthcare executive with more than 25 years of experience in senior level positions and has made a successful leadership transition as full-time faculty at the Rutgers University EJ Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. At Bloustein, she teaches in the Master of Health Administration Program and serves as the coordinator for the undergraduate Health Administration Program. Furthermore, she is the faculty advisor for the undergraduate student organization, Future Healthcare Administrators, which signature event is the annual healthcare administration case competition. Cirne-Neves brings to the classroom a wealth of practical health administration experience resulting from years leading culture change, operational effectiveness, and patient safety and experience. She served as the CEO of Saint James Hospital, Cathedral Healthcare System, Newark, for 10 years, and most recently, in a variety of senior level roles including as Vice President of Ambulatory Services at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), RWJBarnabas Health, Livingston. Throughout her career, Cirne-Neves has demonstrated how to convert an organization's Mission, Vision, and Values into a leadership model that improves workforce engagement, organizational performance and results. She excels at strategic planning and implementation, operations management, and community benefit; and most of all, she shares the resolve that health administrators must nurture and contribute to the next generation of healthcare leaders.Cirne-Neves is board certified in hospital administration and as a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE); she is a past president of ACHE's New Jersey chapter and serves as the ACHE Regent for New Jersey – Northern; as part of her annual Regent Awards Program, she has now introduced the Student Associate and Mid Careerist Regent Awards, elevating the significance of both levels of health administration. She has served on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Examiners and under her leadership CBMC received the regional Baldrige Gold Award for Performance Excellence. She has enjoyed serving in the most senior roles at healthcare organizations and now promotes bridging healthcare organizations with healthcare education.

Have you been looking for ways to make church relevant in an ever-changing world? Is your congregation stuck doing things the way “they've always done them?” Fear not, you're not alone. But there's great news. God is at work doing something new in places that thought they were done. Last week a friend text me "Andy, how do you personally know that God is real? Not theology, not philosophy, not trying to convince others. But how do you know for yourself?" My answer took all of one minute as I picked up the phone and recorded a short voice memo. The thoughts have been rattling around my head since then so I figured I'd let you in on some of them. This is my story. How do I know God is real? 1. I thought I did My parents became authentic followers of Jesus when I was a toddler. Their primary reason was to find some help parenting! (I'm sure that was for my older brother, not me...). Consequently I grew up in a family where scripture reading around the family table, and Sunday church and Friday night youth group, were part of the norm. Alcohol was very rare and although I remember being disciplined at home, I don't recall any harsh words between my parents growing up. When I was seven I invited my mother into my bedroom as I knelt at a low table and invited Jesus to be my personal Savior and Lord. During school holidays I attended Christian camps - CBMC in Raglan and Adventure Camps at Waikanae, New Zealand. I remember choosing to do optional bible studies by correspondence in between to win prizes for completion. When I was 13 I chose to get water baptized in my local church. By the time I was a junior in high school, I had a solid knowledge of scripture, surrounded by wonderful mentors and leaders who exemplified authentic Christian living. I had experienced a few cycling, road-related escapes from death and hearing the voice of God. Then I left home - the sheltered community of support and godly structure, and was accepted for a two-year cadetship on a 12,000 acre ranch (farm) to be trained as a shepherd (horse, dogs, sheep, cattle...). This was boarding with 19 other young men and the conversations were primarily around rugby, beer, boobs and butts... Alcohol consumption was a badge of achievement - how much you could drink before passing out. Sexual conquests were proudly broadcast, and fed by a constant stream of porn videos and magazines. And me having a devoted religious stance, being a virgin, and not gay was a shock. So they confronted, challenged, tested and pushed me to see if what I believed was real. 2. I asked for more I was challenged by some awkward and some genuine questions. Being outside my safe and protected zone, I had to find out for myself rather than relying on a childhood experience or that of my parents. So, along with my Michael W. Smith and Steve Grace casette tapes, my bible, the audio book of God's Generals by Roberts Liardon and my guitar I prayed "God if you are real, I want to know you more." That's when things got real. I would be riding my horse in the New Zealand hill country and 'get' songs that inspired and encouraged me. I would be sitting in my room playing guitar and feel an external warmth that washed over my neck and back. I would be reading scripture and certain verses would stand out and then happen before my eyes. One was "My enemies laid a trap for me... and have fallen into it themselves" (see Psalm 57:6). 3. I grew in favor with God and man 4. I have a heritage of fearing God - walking in His ways, learning His voice, seeing His power So what about you? What is the reason for the hope you have? And if you don't have hope, here's how to access it... It's really simple, as a mentor of mine said "God wants you so badly He made the conditions so simple... only believe." It goes something like this: Pray with me... "Father I come to you in Jesus Name. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross for all of my sin, shame and brokenness. I acknowledge I have sinned and fallen short of your best life for me. I ask you to be my Savior: to forgive me and cleanse me and make me new. I invite you to be my Lord: to live with me and lead me and show me Your way. I ask you to send your Holy Spirit to baptise me with your love and lead me in all truth. I commit to seeking your Kingdom first in all things. Thank you!" If you prayed this for the first time I encourage you to reach out to some authentic christian friends, find a local bible-believing church and start to grow in your journey of being a follower of Jesus. Don't hesitate to reach out to us with your questions or comments andy@heaveninbusiness.com. Episode 54 allows me to sit down and talk to a very interesting member of our community. Chris Simpson and I met several months ago at one of the many galas held to support the nonprofit agencies in our community. Chris was introduced to me as a member of the US Secret Service. As you might imagine, that immediately caught my attention with the normal questions one might have for someone who has, literally, placed his life before another as a protector of US Presidents. And, while I am sure you will find that conversation quite interesting, he is transitioning out of a career as a protector of our democratically elected leaders and a new role as President & CEO of CBMC (Connecting Business & Marketplace to Christ). CBMC, which began in Chicago in 1930, currently boasts an international presence with teams in over 100 counties on 6 continents. Take a few minutes to learn about this dynamic leader as he assumes his new role. I hope you will invest the next 30 minutes and listen to this very interesting conversation.

Bridges College and Young Adults is a ministry of CBMC in Alhambra, CA Questions to ask: 1. What do you think are the most significant issues or questions about abortion? 2. What does the Bible actually say? Look up Bible verse that are related or tangential to abortion (Genesis 1:26-27; Exodus 21:22-25; Numbers 35:31; Numbers 5:27-28; Psalm 139:13-16; Isaiah 44:24) 3. What does the Bible directly answer? What does it not answer? 4. If a church is going to affirm a pro-life ethic, regardless of circumstances, how should it also embody that ethic?

For 29 years, Phil Stone lived his dream calling play-by-play of NFL Football and Major League Baseball for NBC Sports and hosted golf and almost every Olympic sport for ESPN. He was the Voice of the Pac-10 for Prime Ticket Network. In 1994, Phil began wondering if there was anything more to life than travelling the world doing sports. That same year, a number of his close friends introduced him to a church not far from his home in San Diego, and six months later he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. As Phil grew in his relationship with Christ, he was given the book Halftime by Bob Buford. It helped him re-prioritize his life transitioning from a life that was success driven into a life of significance! After 32 years in San Diego, Phil moved cross-country to join CBMC, as National Director of Broadcast Production and Marketing, in July 2008. To be called by God sometimes means trusting Him enough to leave family, friends and a lifestyle you've become accustomed to behind! “It was really about re-prioritizing my life and placing God first," Phil reflected. Several years ago, Phil had the privilege of leading his 83-year-old mother to Christ and then an hour later raced to a Columbus area hospital to lead her twin sister to the Lord, one day before she met Him face-to-face. He calls that frigid December day the greatest day of his life. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, Phil is a devoted Buckeye fan and has two grown children, Brent and Lindsay.
