A Rough JusticeAnother tale from the Celtic WikiIn March 2011, Celtic & Rangers engaged in “The Shame Game”. Today I am chatting with author, speaker, filmmaker, artist, musician, and just an all around renaissance woman, Rebecca Friedlander. During our conversation, Rebecca shares about waiting on the Lord in wilderness seasons and what it looks like to cultivate an intimate relationship with the Lord and then be willing to move when He says “move.” Her latest book The Divine Adventure: Spiritual Practices for a Modern-Day Disciple dives into this, and also looks at what spiritual practices or disciplines even are and how they move us into a place of preparation in order to embrace the divine adventure God has for our life. When we pursue God in an intentional way, we heighten our awareness of the activity of God all around us, and we begin to draw our attention away from working for the approval of people, and instead living from a place of knowing just how loved we are by Him. Rebecca is such a soothing and lovely person, with such a beautiful heart. I hope that you enjoy our conversation and maybe feel intrigued to dive into your own divine adventure. I love how Rebecca points out that we need hope that walking with the Lord is practical in how to meet the genuine needs that exist in our heart. It can be hard, but not because He isn't available to us. He helps us interact with the world around us. And I just want to say, if a relationship with God has a funky taste in your mouth right now due to how some Christians behave, don't bank all your assumptions about who God is based on human behavior. Look to His word. Seek Him out He will make Himself known to you. Ultimately, we all have a desire to live a life that matters, to love well and walk in truth, and Jesus is the hope that anchors all of these things together. If you're looking for ways to figure out what that might look like, we have other episodes in this podcast that speak to how to get started, but I also will say Rebecca's book may be a great place for you to start as well. You can find ways to connect with all those resources in our show notes or over on my blog! By the way, on the other end of the conversation, Rebecca has a masters in Celtic History and she shares with me some of the incredible things she's learned from Early Church history and what can we learn from them, and it's fascinating. Y'all know I love to nerd out!! You guys are going to love Rebecca and I hope this conversation encourages you right where you are today. This journey matters, friend. Don't lose heart. You matter. Survivor Series 1990 is one of those shows that has a bit of lore and mystique surrounding it because of two debuts. One debuting superstar would go on to last 30 years in the WWF/E, and the other wouldn't last 30 days. Welcome to The Undertaker....and the Gobbledygooker! This week Chris and Tony are joined by Gilly from the History Bhoys Abroad podcast, to discuss Gilly's first ever WWF show on VHS, that brought him to the wrestling table and ensured his fandom would last until this day. There is discussion around the comparison between WCW and WWF in 1990, the time period in question being the height of the gimmick era, and why Sgt Slaughter had a limited shelf life in the early nineties. We also dive deep into the reasons why Gilly wasn't the biggest Hogan fan, the perfection of a certain Mr Perfect in one of the greatest elimination matches ever, have a triple threat mark out over Bret Hart, and try to fathom what the hell The Ultimate Warrior was actually saying in any of his promos on any given night... Also, as usual, Chris & Tony mark out for AEW, and sell Gilly on the benefits of watching Dynamite. Did we convert him back into watching modern day wrestling? Check out this bumper edition of the Scottish Smarks to find out! P.S - search History Bhoys Abroad for all good Celtic History related content. Even if you're not of the green and white persuasion it's worth a listen, as the content is informative, interesting and engaging! Check them out wherever you get your podcasts. “Madness” In Chapter Eleven we are joined by Scott McCorry from the Temporary Stand Podcast and the HuddleBoard. We cover the period 1994 to 2000 as the Club goes through a very topsy-turvy time with turmoil reigning on and off the field. Fergus has just arrived to steady the ship but there is a lot of work to be done with a new stadium to be built and maybe more importantly, a team to better Rangers who are on a quest to beat our historic record of nine domestic titles in a row. The managerial roundabout was in full swing as Celtic saw five changes with Macari out, Tommy Burns in, Tommy Burns out, Wim in, Wim out, Dr Joe in, Dr Joe out, John Barnes and King Kenny in. Never in the history of the club had the fans seen such upheaval and change, but a new stadium, a new Club and a mixture of superstars and pretenders entertained us on the way. Prepare to cry, laugh and then cry again as we relive a fascinating period for all hoops fans. As well as discussing the action on the pitch, David Low joins us to talk about his experiences on the boardroom action off the pitch as Fergus puts into place his plan for the future. We have Tales from the Wiki, the History of the Stadium, the History of the Celtic Shirt, as well as all your Fan Stories and Confessions and a tribute to the late Jimmy Connolly Johnstone. Episode Ten 1990-1994 "The Rhebels Have Won" In Chapter Ten we are joined by JB Banal and Average Joe Miller from the Godfather of all Celtic Fanzines Not the View, as well as Harper and Jason from the HomeBhoys. We cover the period 1990 to 1994 as the Club goes through its darkest hour of the modern day, but like in every revolution, the darkest time is just before the dawn. On and off the pitch, Celtic struggle to match their free spending neighbours as the Bhoys in green and white seem to press the self-destruct button at every given opportunity. A string of new managers promise much but ultimately deliver little as fans hopes are dashed again and again. The battle lines are drawn between the Board and a new brand of Celtic Fan who saw no other option but to take things into their own hands. Cambuslang, sponsorless shirts, seats in the Jungle and lack of trophies are all discussed in this extended chapter and we are joined by some of the people involved at the time. Emotional interviews with Brian Dempsey and Matt McGlone, as well as players Tom Boyd, Anton Rogan and Paul Byrne who played in the hoops at the time tell the history of this most dramatic time in the Club's history. We have Tales from the Wiki, the History of the Stadium, the History of the Celtic Shirt, as well as all your Fan Stories and Confessions and a tribute to the late Phil O'Donnell. As our Tenth guests, The NTV pick nominate The Beatson Cancer Center as the nominated charity and you can learn more about them at http://www.beatson.scot.nhs.uk/content/ We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series. Episode Eight 1970-1980 "The Men Who Loved the Green" In Chapter Eight we are joined by Stephen Murray, better known as Saint Anthony from the Celtic Underground. We cover the period 1970 to 1980 which sees the Club continue to dominate domestically yet decline on the European stage. With an aging Lisbon Lions squad breaking up, Celtic continues to develop an ever growing home grown talent to take the place of the greatest team our club has ever known. While the first half of the decade was blessed with stars like Hay, Dalglish, Connelly, and Macari, the second half a saw slight dip in fortune as the this success isn’t built upon with the managers of the decade face a rebuilding challenge. Billy McNeil takes over the reins from the legend that was Jock Stein and is relatively successful despite a lack of investment from the Board. Following on from the tragedy of the Ibrox disaster, Glasgow suffers great social unrest during the challenging 1970s. The Hoops fans however still have some magnificent successes and achievements to enjoy amid the challenges and struggles of a British Isles in economic decline. We have Tales from the Wiki, the History of the Stadium, the History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. Jeanette Findlay also joins us with the history of the Celtic Trust and we pay homage to Johnny Doyle “The Man Who Loved the Green” As our Eighth guest, Stephen nominates SCIAF as the nominated charity and you can learn more about them at http://www.sciaf.org.uk/ We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series.

Episode Seven "The Best Team in the World" In Chapter Seven we are joined by Stephen Sullivan from the Fifa.com and biographer of the forthcoming book on Sean Fallon. We cover the period 1960 to 1970 which is undoubtedly the golden age for the Club. Despite a disappointing start to the decade, the Clubs fortunes are transformed with the appointment of Jock Stein to the managerial seat as we see the team going from great pretenders to a European force. It was bliss for everyone involved with the Club in this period as we not only discuss Lisbon, but chart the development of the team from the European Cup Winners Cup disappointment of 1964 to the all-conquering team of the late sixties. We listen to Ian Young, Bertie Auld, Bobby Lennox, George Connelly and the late Joe McBride telling of their experiences of playing in the hoops during the period and revel in the glory that was Celtic – The Greatest Team in the World. There is also the Tales from the Wiki, the History of the Stadium, the History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. Episode Six "Making A Stand" In this Sixth episode we are joined by Paul Brennan from the Celtic Quick News to cover the period 1950 to 1960. With World War Two over, Scotland wasn't the land of milk and honey as promised, but a country still struggling with rebuilding and rationing. Celtic were rebuilding too and enjoyed a relatively successful period by clinching a double, the Coronation Cup and destroying Rangers 7-1 in the League Cup final of 1957. At first glance this sounds like success but the 1950's promised so much more and the trophy haul was a poor reflection on a team with great talent yet poor leadership. Off the pitch the Club were faced with some of its biggest challenges since its birth in 1887 as the fundamentals of the club's identity came under attack from the authorities. Things came to breaking point and a stand had to be made and thankfully for once the hierarchy of the Club stuck to their principals and stood firm. Despite these distractions the building blocks were being laid for a team that would go onto better things in the years to come. A man named Stein is signed and the blueprint for success was starting to be drawn up. There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt, interviews with players of the time, all your Fan Stories, Confessions and much, much more. As our Sixth guest, Paul nominates The CLIC Sargent Children's Cancer organization as the nominated charity and you can learn more about them at http://www.clicsargent.org.uk/ We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series. Episode Four "Still in the Hearts They Left Behind" In this Fourth episode we are joined by Tom Minogue from the Celtic Wiki to cover the period 1930 to 1940 in a decade where Celtic find themselves struggling for form and consistency. Despite the wealth of talent on the field in the shape of Thomson, Crum, Delaney, Divers and Lyon among others, the Club’s “Biscuit Tin” mentality raises its ugly head as the stars are moved on instead of seeing the talent built upon. Champions twice, Cup winners three times and the winners of the Empire Exhibition trophy see Celtic limp along in a decade that promised so much yet returned little in the way of success. The thirties start off in tragic circumstances with the death of John Thomson and also sees the loss of Peter Scarff and Bertie Thomson, three huge characters in our history, lost to us in their prime, yet the team continue to produce talents that were the envy of our rivals. Questionable refereeing decisions and off the pitch political battles provides a backdrop to many colourful events that were to shape our history for the future. There are tales of North American Tours, fan trouble and boardroom clashes in a decade where the world was preparing for war during the Great Depression. There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. As our Fourth guest, Tom nominates The Belfast Celtic society as the nominated charity and you can learn more about the “Team that Never Dies” at http://www.belfastceltic.org/ We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series. Episode Four "Still in the Hearts They Left Behind" In this Fourth episode we are joined by Tom Minogue from the Celtic Wiki to cover the period 1930 to 1940 in a decade where Celtic find themselves struggling for form and consistency. Despite the wealth of talent on the field in the shape of Thomson, Crum, Delaney, Divers and Lyon among others, the Club's “Biscuit Tin” mentality raises its ugly head as the stars are moved on instead of seeing the talent built upon. Episode Three "Improvisation and Inspiration" In this third episode we are joined by Paul Larkin to cover the period 1920 to 1930 in a decade where Celtic are up against the rising force of Rangers. Still, a haul of 13 trophies in ten years wasn't a bad return for a team blessed with the talents of McGrory, Gallagher, Cassidy, Cringan, McNally and McLean. The war is now over and recession is kicking in as Celtic play in an era building up to the General Strike of 1926. The poor of Glasgow's East End turn to the emerging Labour Party and the rise of Red Clydeside as the streets are carved up by vicious gangs with violence and social unrest a common occurrence. Add to this the political changes and armed warfare going on in Ireland, the fans of Celtic cling onto their love of their team despite the challenges at the time. There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. As our third guest, Paul nominates Aisling Irish Center in the Bronx of NYC as the third charity that will benefit from this series and you can learn more about them at http://www.aislingcenter.org/ We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series. In this second episode we are joined by Harry Brady from Celtic Underground to cover the period 1900 to 1920 and it's not long before we are discussing conspiracy theories against the Club even back in those early days. On the pitch, however, things really start to get exciting as Celtic won six league titles in a row between 1904/05 and 1909/10 and even won every competition they entered in 1907-08. We learn about the introduction of the hoops and reason behind the dreaded term “Old Firm”. Bennet, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers and Hamilton were the deadliest front line in Scottish football of the period, but it wasn't long before it was a different front line that was come to the fore as we chat about Celtic in the First World War and all the social unrest in Glasgow both during this time and shortly after its conclusion There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. Episode One “From Desperation to Celebration” In this inaugural episode we are joined by Jim Blythe and Paul McQuade from the Celtic Graves Society to cover the period 1887 to 1900. We chat about the formation of the Club, the opening of the first stadium and the creation of the team. All this is set against the backdrop of the desperation of the new Irish immigrant who continued to struggle to find a place socially in the Glasgow of the 1890s. As the decade wore on, the local population in the East of the City finally had something to cheer about and be proud of. Listen to Jim and Paul explain the boardroom battles of the time that makes the 1994 takeover sound like a tea party as the Club develops the first stages of professionalism. However it was on the pitch where the most significant progress was made as the first heroes to wear the hoops started to emerge. Names like James Kelly, Johnny Campbell, Sandy McMahon and “The Wild Rover” himself, Dan Doyle rolled off the tongues of the ever growing army of Celtic fans and we look back at a team that won a total of 15 major trophies in those first twelve years. As our first guests, Jim and Paul nominate the first charity that will benefit from this series and that will be Archdiocese of Glasgow Arts Project.
