The Portland Bureau of Transportation is falling short of meeting some of its safety goals, according to a new city audit. Vision Zero is an international effort to completely eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The city of Portland adopted this philosophy in 2016, and while traffic deaths declined soon after, in 2021 they reached the highest they’ve been in the past three decades at 64. In 2023, those numbers are expected to be even higher, with early data standing at around 69 deaths. KC Jones is the audit services director for Portland. He joins us to share the details of the new audit. Dylan Rivera is the public information officer for PBOT. He also joins us to share the changes the agency will be making in response and the challenges of reaching Vision Zero.

In the last few years, Portland has tried a number of different tactics to make responding to 911 calls more efficient and faster. Not all of them have worked. In 2021, the Fire Bureau added the Community Health Division to shift its response, so that not every 911 call gets a full engine and ambulance. Though the Community Health Division and its Community Connect program have since been eliminated, a new audit of the program reveals much about how the bureau can best support programs like Portland Street Response and Community Health Assess & Treat (CHAT). Host Bill Donohue begins the show welcoming Hall-of-Famer and former New York Jets RB Curtis Martin. Curtis began by talking about some of the adversity he dealt with as a youngster, and how he chose to deal with it. Later Curtis talked about his time at the University of Pittsburgh, and his decision to turn pro. Bill asked Curtis about his first carry as a pro, and Curtis talked about how head coach Bill Parcells tested him early in his career. Curtis went on to discuss how Coach Parcells was in many ways a father figure to him, and one of the main reasons why he ended up in New York with the Jets. Curtis talked about his toughness and his ability to show up and play every Sunday, some of the injuries he played through over the years, and the reason why he ultimately decided to retire. Curtis also talked about his election to the Hall of Fame after basically being passed over in his first year of eligibility for Marshall Faulk, how he came about his induction speech, as well as how he joked with his mentor Parcells a year later when Coach Parcells was enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Now retired, Curtis discussed some of his aspirations, such as possibly owning a team (the Jets?) at some time in the future. Curtis also spoke about his involvement in various charities, including his Job Foundation which is aimed at providing financial aid and hands-on support to single mothers, youth charities, individuals with disabilities, and low income housing providers. Curtis talked about the honor of being included in the Jets Ring of Honor, and how he became a part of the NFL's Code of Conduct Committee. Curtis also talked about playing with QBs Vinny Testaverde and Chad Pennington, and how far he felt the 1997 team could have gone had Vinny Testaverde not gotten injured trying to recover his fumble in the first game of the season. Curtis closed things out talking about the Jets team today, new head coach Robert Saleh and what the Jets should do with current quarterback Sam Darnold. Curtis also expressed some thoughts on how Roger Goodell and the NFL handled things during the pandemic. In the second half of the show Bill spoke with former New York Nets guard and ABA star Ollie Taylor. Ollie recalled his days playing the the ABA, including playing for head coaches such as KC Jones, Larry Brown and Rod Thorn- as well as playing with seven Hall-of-Famers and against the likes of such super stars as Julius Erving, Rick Barry and others. Ollie also recalled how he showed up with Dr. J to play in the famed Rucker League that played in Harlem’s Rucker Park, located on 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in New York City. Ollie of course talked about his famous dunk on Artis Gilmore in the 1972 ABA playoffs- revered as one of the most amazing dunks of all-time. Closing things out Ollie talked about the pride he took in being able to play any position on the floor, and how he feels in many ways the ABA saved the NBA. About Curtis Martin Curtis Martin played in the National Football League (NFL) for 12 seasons, primarily with the New York Jets. He played his first three seasons with the New England Patriots, who selected him in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft. Martin joined the Jets in 1998, where he spent nine seasons before retiring after the 2006 season. A five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro, Martin rushed for 14,101 yards in his career, which is the sixth highest in the NFL. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Martin, who missed most of his final college season at the University of Pittsburgh with an ankle injury, was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots in 1995. He showed no effects of that injury during his rookie season. He ran 30 yards on his first NFL carry, scored the game-winning touchdown and became the first Patriots player to rush for 100 yards in his pro debut. It was the first of a rookie-record-tying nine games that he eclipsed...

Straight From the Horse's Mouth

Just like that case of herpes you thought you got rid of we are back!!! Its been a few weeks but trust me it'll be worth the wait with the content we go coming. First and foremost our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of legendary Boston Celtics player/coach KC Jones as well as University of Utah running back Ty Jordan both of whom passed away this weekend. May their legacies live on and never be forgotten. Now, lets get to it. On today's episode we have Bryce's brother BJ filling in for Eric and the brothers were unfiltered. They tackle whether James Harden's desire to leave Houston and whether the drama surrounding it will cause irreparable harm to his legacy. Also, the boys dive into the never-ending Kyrie Irving drama as it pertains to the media. Bryce goes on a rant on the current state of media and why he does not blame Irving for going on his brief media blackout. The boys also speculate on the current situation involving Kentucky freshman and St. Louis product Cam'ron Fletcher. We have that and more so sit down and shut up you just might learn something. 202.

Qué me vas a decir tú a mi?" Y acto seguido, pam. Hi pals, coming up on this week’s episode of Go With The Heat Tubbs and Crockett find themselves mixed up in separate family dramas in the episode To Have and to Hold. On This Week In Vice we’re taking a look back to when this episode of Miami Vice aired, from February 5 to February 11, 1989, when Miami Vice was King. Show notes and more: gowiththeheat.com Early show access, behind the scenes and a free mustache! www.patreon.com/gowiththeheat In news… On Feb. 8 while on final approach to Santa Maria Airport in Pico Alto, Portugal Independent Air Flight 1851 crashed killing all 144 on board in the deadliest plane crash in Portugal’s history. A combination of both ground and aircraft crew errors led to the aircraft to crash into Pico Alto Mountain. In Sports… The NBA announces the Hall of Fame class of 1989. This group includes the Boston Celtics great KC Jones and journeyman Lenny Wilkens. Both Jones and Wilkens led prolific careers as both players and coaches. In Music… Goodbye Phil, Two Hearts finally gets knocked off the top of the Hot 100 and in-between Collins and Paula Abdul is a true one hit wonder. Sneaking in for just one week is When I’m With You by the arena rock band Sheriff. From their self-titled album the song originally hit the Hot 100 in 1983 but in 1988 found new radio play, years after the band had already broke up. To add to the strangeness of this song, in the era of video killed the radio star, this song was released both in 1982 and 1988 without a music video. In Movies… Rain Man finally relents at the top of the Box Office and a new film finally takes number one. Starring Nick Nolte and Martin Short is the crime-comedy film Three Fugitives. The film follows one career criminal just released from prison and one desperate father robbing a bank to help his sick daughter. The film performed well, regardless of the poor reviews from critics. But as I mentioned before, critics are a bunch of jerks. And that’s everything you need to know that was happening when Miami Vice was king. This episode features an interview with Baxter Holmes from 2014. At the time, Holmes had just joined ESPN, having previously written for the Boston Globe, where he covered the Boston Celtics. When we talked with him four years ago, he had been hired to cover the Lakers. Since then, he’s had some incredible success, and has been promoted to a job that has him writing about the entire NBA. One of the stories that came about in that new beat was a story on how professional basketball players are obsessed with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The story – The NBA’s Secret Addiction - went viral, and ultimately ended up winning Baxter a James Beard Foundation media award for feature reporting, a top award in the culinary industry. He received his award at the end of April. At any rate, on this episode, Baxter talks about his story about the time Bill Russell, KC Jones and other players from the University of San Francisco – which had just won the NCAA national championship – visited inmates at Alcatraz. It was his last story for the Boston Globe before he joined ESPN.
