This week, our journey through the career of Makoto Shinkai comes to 5 Centimeters Per Second. Now a firm fan-favourite, this 60-odd minute anthology of three interconnected coming-of-age shorts was, for many, their first introduction to Shinkai's work, and it represents an important step in the director's growth as a filmmaker and storyteller.Subscribe to our Patreon for ad-free episodes and bonus conversations in our Library Cafe series.Follow us on Twitter or Instagram, or drop us an email at ghibliotheque@gmail.com. Now that the gang has completed our reviews on legendary anime film director Makoto Shinkai's Your Name, Weathering with You, & Suzume, we dive into four of Shinkai's films-before-the-fame so to speak, created in the years before Your Name became an international hit—2002's Voices of a Distant Star, 2004's Places Promised in Our Early Days, 2007's 5 Centimeters Per Second, and 2013's The Garden of Words. Stick around for our 4-film tier list, reflections on Shinkai's growth as a director and filmmaker, and recognition of Shinkai's formula and his union of sci-fi/sci-fantasy and love stories. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
I've made some excellent progress with my latest film project, The Arbiters. It's in development and I've been working on the script. About halfway through the first draft, I decided to go back and polish what I had so far thanks to notes I'd written along the way for myself. That, and my collaborate and I met. He gave me excellent notes, which reinforced that what I had written only needed polishing, not a page one rewrite. That felt good. Also what helped me was studying all of Makoto Shinkai's early filmography—movies such as Children Who Chase Lost voices, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days). I also talk about work I've been doing with the Financially Fit Foundation, a non-profit organization that I'm a part of. Outside of the creative stuff, I discuss how we all need to own 100% of 100% of every relationship we have because WE CREATE every relationship in our lives, with lovers, friends, family, coworkers, strangers, etc. I talk about my love for the Summer Movie Wager (http://summermoviewager.com). Lastly, I talk about my thoughts on human optimization and why I've personally slowed down on reading self help books. So check out this episode and please share your thoughts down in the comment section or hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. Continuing on with the month of anime films, Elliott and Brenen discuss the romantic drama film 5 Centimeters per Second. (Originally recorded August 22, 2018)
Makoto Shinkai is a name that has become increasingly prevalent over the years and for good reason. After hitting the anime industry in 2007 with his beloved film 5 Centimeters Per Second, he quickly established himself as a director with the ability to combine masterful artistic talent with emotional, bittersweet storytelling. Seven years later, Makoto releases The Garden of Words, where he honed in on beautiful animation styling and world building, leading to shortly after releasing Your Name - the second-largest grossing domestic film just behind Spirited Away, and the fourth-largest ever, behind Titanic and Frozen. In this episode we will cover both films 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Garden of Words and discuss our thoughts, hot takes and if Makoto Shinkai is truly the next Hayao Miyazaki. Intro song by the talented "Boyfriend Genes" https://boyfriendgenes.bandcamp.com/track/dont-call
On this episode, Cat and Joe discuss and review Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second, a 63 minute romantic drama with some of the most beautiful animation you might ever live to see. We discuss the film's true meaning: Is love everything? Will you be miserable without it? Either way, this movie will kick you right in the feels...if you think it's good. Available to purchase on Amazon. Available subbed on YouTube.

Cross-posted with Voices + Visions Just like last year, my dear friend and fellow podcaster Patrick Ripoll returns for a very special episode of this show. Around the month of May, I ask Patrick to return to a microphone to talk a variety of topics. We play catch up on our lives, talk about our latest projects, and review two movies that we've assigned to one another. The two movies for this year were the Hong Kong late 80s action flick IN THE LINE OF DUTY IV as well as the gorgeous Anime coming-of-age tale, 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND. After the reviews, we launch into our other yearly tradition by playing a game show. If you want to hear last year's version of "Score Bits," it's included in the show notes below as a separate download. For this year, we took a cue from Film Junk's 700th episode and played a round of "Tonal Recall," which includes dialogue excerpts from favorite films of ours in addition to score / soundtrack samples. For our final segment, we program our own separate 12-hour film festivals in honor of the upcoming Chicago Critics Film Festival, which is also discussed here as well. All in all, it was a blast to talk with Patrick like we used to frequently back in the day, so I truly hope you enjoy this blast from the past as we look forward to the future! 00:00 - 29:19 - Introduction / Catching Up 29:20 - 01:20:11 - Movie Review Assignments 01:20:12 - 02:28:27 - Tonal Recall Movie Game 02:28:28 - 02:53:02 - CCFF + Our Film Festivals? 02:53:03 - 02:56:07 - Outro Follow Patrick on Letterboxd: http://letterboxd.com/patrickripoll Check out the Chicago Critics Film Festival: https://musicboxtheatre.com/events/chicago-critics-film-festival Last Year's Birthday Movie Game: http://www.mediafire.com/file/v51b8n5xlze6bs4/S_Bits.mp3
Cross-posted with Director's Club It's appropriate that this is Episode 78, since I was born in 1978. And just like last year, my dear friend and fellow podcaster Patrick Ripoll returns for a very special episode of this show. You will often hear Ben and Zane relentlessly make fun of shows we don't like, or get excited and rave about shows we do like, but we're starting a new hundred episodes with an oddity: relentlessly making fun of a movie we genuinely enjoyed, and which less cynical people find emotionally resonant. It's beautiful, it's meaningful, it's short, and it's just so, so full of its own message. Enjoy the cherry blossoms.

Anne Ladyem (anneladyem.com) and Jared discuss another of Makoto Shinkai's works in his 2007 film, 5 Centimeters Per Second. We discuss not only the film in its entirety and what we thought of it, but also the 2010 manga adaptation which expands upon the story in some surprising ways.
Yes indeed it's time for Evan and David to talk about Makoto Shinkai's smash hit film Your Name (Kimi no Na wa). Spoiler alert for those of you living under a rock (also spoilers for 5 Centimeters Per Second). Everybody else, expect lots of serious discussion of the themes and execution of the film, as well as whether or not the characters actually bang (we've gotta stay on brand). What's good? News Makoto Shinkai's new film entitled “your name” will premier at Anime Expo on July 3rd. His previous works include, “She and Her Cat”, “Voices of a Distant Star”, “5 Centimeters Per Second”, and “Garden of Words”. your name is about a girl, Mitsuha. in high school who lives in a little mountain town whose father is the mayor. She has an honest personality and doesn't approve of her father's election campaign or the customs of her family's Shinto shrine. (Shinto is a religion of the people of Japan. It focuses on ritual practices to be carried out diligently, to establish a connection between present-day Japan and its ancient past.) Mitsuha yearns for a life in Tokyo where Taki, a boy in high school, lives. Mitsuha has a dream where she is a boy in Tokyo, and Taki has a dream where he is a rural mountain girl. Shonen Jump revealed a listing for My Hero Academia Season 2, which will tell the story of the “sports festival” arc. Anime Expo sent an e-mail stating “Hulu returns to Anime Expo with a stunning VR Demo, a manga wall photo booth, and up to 100 special collector giveaways per day, Hulu is staking its claim at AX 2016 as your go-to streaming destination.” School Tanaka-Kun is Always Listless- Silver Link (Kokoro Connect, Non Non Biyori) Azumanga Daioh- J.C. Professor Siracusa's Anime 103 - Professor Siracusa’s Anime class is back in session, as we watch two short films with similar themes, both by director Makoto Shinkai. First there’s “The Voices of a Distant Star,” which features a boy and a girl separated by light-years as she fights an alien scourge. Then there’s “5 Centimeters Per Second,” in which a boy and a girl are separated by… a long train journey. Both are beautiful explorations of teenage romantic angst and isolation, with images that will stick with our panelists for a long time. Host Jason Snell with John Siracusa, Erika Ensign and Aleen Simms.

We’ve definitely had our share of great titles from the mind of Makoto Shinkai. Take 5 Centimeters Per Second and Garden of Words for example. However Children Who Chase Lost Voices is definitely a step in a different direction for us. Is this movie another good mark in his legacy, or a failure? Listen and find out our take on it! Following the review, we hold a spoiler discussion for the film. Following the outro music for the episode, the 35:50 mark, this spoiler discussion begins. If you haven’t seen the movie, avoid listening beyond that point.

An anime music video can give a good indication of what a series is about, and whether you would enjoy it. However, there are always exceptions to the rule, as Kellen explains with a brief review of 5 Centimeters Per Second.

Podcast Anime Review Episode 95: 5 Centimeters Per Second. Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. ADV Films, $29.98. Takaki and Akari have been friends since they were young kids but when Akari moves away, their relationship gets a bit strained simply because of the physical distance between them. Now in high school, Takaki finds out he too is moving and he will probably never see Akari again. So he makes a desperate try to reach her via train on a night when heavy snow is making such a trip nigh impossible. Even though 5 Centimeters is packaged as a single movie, it can also be broken down into 3 distinct segments chronicling the continuing breakdown of the love between Takaki and Akari. Well, more accurately, the failure of Takaki to move on with his life when he realizes he will never be with Akari. The second segment offers a bit of hope as a classmate of Takaki's is just dying to tell him that she loves him, but will Takaki even notice? My Grade: A+
For our fourth and final week of Makoto Shinkai Director Month, we discuss his 2007 episodic film about longing for love across the years. As we note, it's a beautiful bridge between earlier Shinkai works and his eventual feature film "Your name." and (in what should be no surprise) another powerful emotional viewing experience.5 Centimeters Per Second Review - 0:01:36The Connecting Point - 0:56:19Follow & SubscribeAaronTwitterFacebookPatrickTwitterFacebookFeelin' FilmFacebookTwitterInstagramWebsiteEmail feelinfilm@gmail.comFeelin' Film on Apple PodcastsFeelin' Film on Google PlayFeelin' Film on StitcherFeelin' Film on TuneInFeelin' Film on OvercastFeelin' Film on SpotifyJoin the Facebook Discussion GroupSupport us on Patreon & get awesome rewardsRate/Review us on iTunes and on your podcast app of choice!
