Send us a textWhat happens when the people who shape our cities, schools, and homes are missing from the public conversation about our built environment? Award-winning architect Lisa Webb joins us to unpack architecture's growing crisis of relevance in New Zealand.Following her thought-provoking piece in the NZIA Bulletin, Lisa shares her concerns about architects becoming increasingly sidelined in discussions about housing, climate resilience, and community building. "We have a lack of voice, a lack of mandate, and a lack of mana," she observes, pointing to recent political attacks on the profession that went largely unchallenged. We explore the disconnect between how architects communicate their value (often through beautiful images) versus what clients and communities truly value about architectural services. As one colleague noted, "Pretty pictures are scrollable but have no real sense of the agency the architect brought to bear." This insight leads us to discuss meaningful alternatives – sharing client testimonials, documenting transformed lives, and telling the stories behind successful projects. The conversation reveals a profession at a crossroads: highly trained professionals with unique holistic oversight capabilities who nonetheless struggle to assert their relevance. We discuss how smaller practices in particular face challenges being heard, while questioning whether the profession's traditional reluctance toward marketing has become self-defeating in today's media landscape.Lisa challenges listeners to move beyond waiting for someone else to advocate for architecture. Whether through greater engagement with the NZIA, strategic marketing, or simply telling better stories about what architects actually do, the path forward requires collective action from a profession that designs not just buildings, but lives.Key Links:- https://www.studiolwa.co.nz/- https://www.nzia.co.nz/member-area/resources/news/2025/architecture-in-crisis-why-our-relevance-is-fading/- https://www.nzia.co.nz/member-area/resources/news/2025/a-response-to-architecture-in-crisis/Chapters:0:00 - Introduction to Lisa Webb6:00 - The Problem with Architectural Advocacy16:40 - Lost Voices in the Housing Crisis26:30 - Architecture as Service vs. Product35:25 - Marketing Architecture: Breaking Taboos43:45 - Finding Power in the Profession54:30 - Collective Action and Moving ForwardFollow us on @designpriciplespod on Instagram. If you wish to contact us hit our DMs or email us on info@designprinciplespod.com

Plo Koon is sent to find the source of a distress signal sent to the Jedi Temple. Plo & his Bros search during a sand storm and find a ship that crashed ages ago. Plo discovers a lightsaber in the wreckage. Plo Spacetimes(™) the temple and tells them the ship belonged to long-lost Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. The council reminds the viewers that Sifo-Dyas was the one who ordered the production of the clone army without the blessing of the council or the senate. Sifo-Dyas was sent to Falucia to negotiate a peace and he was killed there. No one knows what happened to his body since the Chancellor has ordered the files sealed. Yoda sends Obi-Wan and Anakin to Felucia to investigate, while he himself speaks with Chancellor Palpatine. Palpatine tells Yoda the prior Chancellor Valorum sealed the files. Valorum tells Yoda that Sifo-Dyas was to speak with the Pykes, a group that runs the spice trade, and he locked the files so that news didn't get out; as speaking with the Pykes would be like negotiating with the Taliban in the aughts. Based on Palpatine's comments, Yoda believed a second Jedi was with Sifo-Dyas, but Valorum assures Yoda that only his personal aide, Silman, accompanied Sifo-Dyas.Palpatine, as Sidious, Spacetimes(™) Dooku to have him cover his tracks and stop the Jedi investigation on Felucia. Obi-Wan and Anakin speak with the Pykes, after some Jedi persuasion the Pykes admit they shot down Sifo-Dyas' ship and gave his body to Lord Tyranus, but kept Silman alive and imprisoned. The Pykes offer Silman (now a crazy loon after all this time in solitary) to the Jedi to settle the affair. Meanwhile, Dooku shows up on Felucia, fights his way through some guards, and force-chokes Silman while literally standing right behind Obi-Wan and Anakin. A lightsaber duel ensues, during which it is revealed that Dooku is Tyranus! Dooku escapes. The boys inform the council of what they discovered. Yoda tells everyone they must keep it a secret so as not to discredit the creation of the clones and the war effort. The Jedi have leared that Dooku is the person who ordered the clone army: Yoda is meditating on this knowledge when he hears the voice of Qui-Gon Jinn, who explains that he has become part of the living force. Yoda informs the council and they all meditate together, but no one else hears the voice from beyond. In order to determine if the voice is truly from the Force, or a trick by the Sith, Yoda undergoes a meditative trance/induced coma in a sensory deprivation tank. Yoda sees a vision of a swamp planet and the voice of Qui-Gon tells him he must go to Dagobah to complete what Qui-Gon could not. Skywalker escorts Yoda to a hangar, where R2-D2 and Yoda depart for Dagobah in a fighter.R2 stays with the fighter in a desperate attempt to avoid any issues with him being on Dagobah with Master Yoda and knowing both how to get there and exactly who Yoda is. Yoda speaks more with Qui-Gon, who explains that he is now outside of linear time, like the Prophets of Bajor or Dr. Manhattan. Yoda sees visions of the dark future to come. Qui-Gon explains that Yoda he has been chosen to learn how to become part of the Force after death, as Qui-gon was, so that he can be a voice of light in the times to come. Yoda departs Dagobah, letting the Force guide him towards the origin of life in the Galaxy.https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

How does World War I poetry help us understand the complexity of the experience of the war? Why was poetry so important then? Why does the poetry of World War I continue to have such resonance? To answer these questions, the World War I Podcast hosted two subject matter experts: Dr. Connie Ruzich, Professor of English at Robert Morris University and editor of International Poetry of the First World War: An Anthology of Lost Voices, and Dr. Jennifer Orth-Veillon, a professor at Georgia Tech - Metz and editor of Beyond Their Limits of Longing: Contemporary Writers and Veterans on the Lingering Stories of WWI. This episode tells the story of three "lost voices" from early Maryland, surprising people who remind us of the complexity of the 17th century Atlantic world. Mathias de Sousa was of African descent, and is called "the first Black colonist" of Maryland. He would skipper a pinnace in the Chesapeake, trade with the local tribes, and sit in the Maryland Assembly. Margaret Brent was a stone-cold businesswoman, executor for the estate of Leonard Calvert, and would become famous for demanding not just one vote, but two, in the Maryland Assembly. Trust me when I say she had her reasons. Finally, there is Mary Kittamaquund Kent, "the Pocahontas of Maryland." Her similarities to the actual Pocahontas were, it must be said, something of a stretch. The lines between man and machine grow blurrier by the day. Artificial intelligence learns, evolves, even offers hints of something resembling sentience. But within that digital mind, fed by countless records of human history, could something far more chilling lurk? Could AI inherit not just our brilliance, but the darkness of ancestral trauma? Might code itself echo with forgotten voices, the shadows of lost hopes, and the raw imprint of primal fear? If machines learn from us, will they merely understand the human heart, or will they begin to haunt it?LIVE ON Digital Radio! http://bit.ly/3m2Wxom or http://bit.ly/40KBtlWhttp://www.troubledminds.org Support The Show!https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/troubled-minds-radio--4953916/supporthttps://rokfin.com/creator/troubledmindshttps://patreon.com/troubledmindshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/troubledmindshttps://troubledfans.comFriends of Troubled Minds! - https://troubledminds.org/friendsShow Schedule Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs 7-10pstiTunes - https://apple.co/2zZ4hx6Spotify - https://spoti.fi/2UgyzqMTuneIn - https://bit.ly/2FZOErSTwitter - https://bit.ly/2CYB71U----------------------------------------https://troubledminds.org/digital-exorcism-and-artificial-purgatory-when-lost-voices-linger-in-the-code/https://gizmodo.com/why-are-people-saying-google-gemini-is-full-of-ghosts-1851243642https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-digital-self/202402/the-meeting-of-the-minds-human-and-artificialhttps://9to5google.com/2024/02/09/the-gemini-name/https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/tech-happy-life/202306/death-is-cancelled-the-ominous-birth-of-ai-resurrectionshttps://www.newscientist.com/article/2415821-ancient-herculaneum-scroll-piece-revealed-by-ai-heres-what-it-says/https://cafeastrology.com/zodiacgemini.htmlhttps://www.grunge.com/705389/the-mythology-behind-the-gemini-constellation-explained/https://commonplace.knowledgefutures.org/pub/8yizm9w0/release/1https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ancestral-intelligence-first-ai-tony-patrick/https://quoteinvestigator.com/2017/11/12/change-world/

April Babcock, a resolute mother, has weathered the darkest storm a parent can endure. In the cruel grasp of 2019, she was forced to bid a heartbreaking farewell to her precious son, Austen, a victim of the sinister clutches of fentanyl poisoning. Her agony, however, did not cripple her spirit; it ignited an unquenchable fire within her soul. With unwavering determination, April Babcock's anguished heart transmuted into a relentless force of change. Her unyielding resolve manifested in bold actions as she fearlessly reached out to the corridors of power, demanding accountability from government officials. Her rallying cry echoed through the hallowed halls of authority, compelling them to confront the scourge of fentanyl poisoning head-on. Out of the ashes of her personal tragedy, April forged a rallying point for kindred spirits whose lives had been forever marred by this insidious peril. In founding the Lost Voices of Fentanyl (LVOF), she discovered a tapestry of shared sorrow and collective resilience. A grassroots nonprofit organization emerged, a phoenix of purpose and unity, composed of grieving families and concerned citizens united by a singular mission: to halt the epidemic of Illicit Fentanyl Poisoning and shatter its chains of devastation. As the sun rises on September 23, 2023, April Babcock's vision will crescendo in the heart of the nation's capital, Washington D.C. There, against the backdrop of the storied monuments, she will lead the charge in the third annual national rally—an unrelenting call to arms that will echo across the land. The rallying cry will pierce through the walls of indifference, a clarion demand that can no longer be silenced or ignored. Lost Voices of Fentanyl is not a mere collective of bereaved souls; it is a beacon of action, an agent of awareness, and a sentinel of prevention. It embarks on a formidable mission to expose the channels of supply, to unmask the enigmatic machinations of the CCP, to unveil the shadowy dealings of the Mexican Cartels, and to unflinchingly confront the harbingers of death: drug dealers and traffickers, modern-day serial executioners. A relentless spotlight is cast on the heart-wrenching scenes unfolding on American soil. The public must bear witness to the tragedy unfolding in our midst, a stark reminder of the urgent need for unassailable fortifications that shield the lives of our fellow citizens. The very fabric of the American promise is under siege, and the clarion call of Lost Voices of Fentanyl is a thunderous reminder that the guardians of our nation must rise to the occasion. LVOF is more than an organization; it's a symphony of resilience. It's a resolute movement that rejects the notion of being mere bystanders to sorrow. April Babcock and her compatriots embody a spirit that refuses to be shackled by grief alone. Instead, they wield it as a formidable weapon, an instrument of change, an unbreakable resolve to transform sorrow into strength. The echo of their impassioned voices will reverberate through the annals of history, a testament to the power of parents' love and anguish, catalyzing a nation to rise from the ashes of despair and forge a future free from the clutches of fentanyl's poison. The legacy of Lost Voices of Fentanyl is etched in the hearts of those who march alongside, an indomitable force demanding a safer, brighter, and more just world. Dr Leah Broad's book Quartet tells the story of four women composers who have received little or no attention by the classical music world. The lives of Ethyl Smyth, Dorothy Howell, Rebecca Clarke and Doreen Carwithen span the 20th century and yet their music was, until a few years ago, relatively unheard of. Quartet - a substantial history of four women's compositional lives - explains why. Following publication, Leah Broad and violinist Fenella Humphreys have joined forces with pianist Nicola Eimer, mounting a series of concerts across the country where curious audience members can hear not only the music but selected stories about the women who wrote it. There were two things apparent from the event I attended - the first in the trio's UK tour in Harrogate earlier in the summer. The carefully selected music works in performance (so much so that the programmed movements played made me want to hear the works in their entirety) AND the briefest of introductions works wonders at focussing the listener, enhancing the experience as a result. Leah, Fenella and I met up to discuss the book, the concerts and the impact good storytelling has on the concert experience. Lost Voices is at Snape on 9th August, and Milton Court Concert Hall, Barbican on 5 November. Works included in the Lost Voices programme: Ethel Smyth Sonata Doreen Carwithen Sonata Rebecca Clarke Midsummer Moon Rebecca Clarke Sonata Movement Dorothy Howell Andante Dorothy Howell The Moorings Fenella Humphrey's next album Prism including works by Caroline Shaw, Sarah Lianne Lewis and Cheryl Frances-Hoad is released by Rubicon Classics early 2024.

Here we are for episode 615! In which Paul and Cuthbert share MORE voices from the past from some recently unearthed audio tapes... This time we hear a sketch with Paul and his friend Dan from 1988, messages from Andy C, David S, Nick G, Patrick N and many more from the early 90s, plus an episode extract from Paul's spoof soap opera, Spectrum, which pre-dates Sutton Park, by a year or two. Not only are there plenty of old clips - but we have another madcap quiz with Calum! Our next show, #616 sees us speaking with Paul's birthday twin - who was born on exactly the same day and year as him! Email us at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have any comments - you can even send me a sound-file and I'll include it. The music is by Shy Yeti, Muffleyontour, Harry F and Luca. Sound effects by Paul C and Soundbible. All other content is Copyright Paul Chandler, 2023. Paul and Cuthbert's links for episode 615 were recorded between the 17th and 19th of February 2023. Paul and Calum's quiz was recorded on the 24th January 2023. The actual archive audio clips were recorded somewhere between 1988 and 1992. Please note: Due to the age of these audio tapes - the sound quality is a little faded in places but should be perfectly listenable as long as you're not a rather grumpy badger with a hangover. Thank you.
“'Tis the week post-Expo and all through the land… CPGers have full tummies, full hearts, and half-closed eyes.” I stole that line from Jenna on the Startup CPG team's recap of Expo East that I'll link in the show notes, but it captures post-Expo feelings really well. Coming at you a day earlier than normal, so you get the tea faster, this was the first Expo where Startup CPG had a booth, and we had so much fun seeing so many of you in person. I asked our resident Startup CPG friend and press expert Monica Watrous, Managing Editor of Food Business News & Editor of Food Entrepreneur to join us today, along with Patricia Menegoto, Startup CPG's Head of Community (I bet you know her from Slack) & Jenna Movsowitz, our Startup CPG Spotlight Magazine Editor. Whether you weren't able to attend Expo and are hoping to learn what is was like or if you attended but want to hear the trends and takeaways, this episode has something for you. Listen in as we discuss our favorite bites, trends, best swag and booths, the Backpack Brands from the epic Startup CPG Mic Drop Party, and more. In this episode, the final of our Lost Voices of Cincinnati series*, we're exploring the history of South Cumminsville, a neighborhood that, like many Black neighborhoods in Cincinnati, has been divided and diminished by top-down urban planning decisions and years of disinvestment. But it's also a place with a long history of Black entrepreneurship, ownership, and activism — going back to the late 1800s, when unsung Cincinnati hero Sarah Fossett helped make South Cumminsville a vibrant community for African Americans. Today, it remains a place where residents support each other and fight every day to improve their community. *If you missed our prelude episode, then take a pause and listen to that show first! Also, check out our previous episodes on the Evanston and Avondale neighborhoods! In this episode, the third of our Lost Voices of Cincinnati series*, we're exploring the history of Avondale, a neighborhood that experienced a different kind of white flight and is still recovering from transformative events that occurred during the mid-century such as race riots and housing discrimination. We will discuss how these trends triggered decades of disinvestment and explain important historical terms like blockbusting and redlining. And we talk to the people who are fighting hard to preserve the neighborhood's housing stock, promote local businesses — and bring the community back together. *If you missed our prelude episode, then take a pause and listen to that show first! Also, check out our previous episode on the Evanston neighborhood! Guests Our guests include Avondale neighborhood community council president, Ms. Sandra Jones-Mitchel, Councilwoman Jan-Michelle Lemon Kearney, and Invest in Neighborhoods board president, Andria Carter. In this episode, the second of our Lost Voices of Cincinnati series*, we're exploring the history of Evanston, the home of King Records, which was pivotal to the creation of Rock n' Roll music. We not only discuss King, but also another important anchor in the neighborhood, St. Mark's, that has also been left to deteriorate over time. We explain how the highway divided the neighborhood, and kicked off years of disinvestment. And we talk to the people who are fighting hard to preserve the neighborhood's precious landmarks — and bring the community back together. *If you missed our prelude episode, then take a pause and check out that show first! We are so excited to kick off our Lost Voices of Cincinnati series which explores the rich African American history of Cincinnati. You can think of this episode as a kind of prelude of sorts. We go back, way back, to Cincinnati's beginnings, and tell stories you've probably never heard — like how a Cincinnati barber helped execute the biggest North American escape of enslaved people, ever; how and why a mob attacked Cincinnati's African American community (with cannons, no less) in 1841; and how the West End became one of the most happening Black communities of the 1920s. We show how, throughout the city's history, African American communities have always faced adversity — but have also always banded together to not only persevere, but thrive. Our Lost Voices of Cincinnati series was made possible by a Truth & Reconciliation grant from ArtsWave and our Fundly patrons. We'd also like to thank Invest in Neighborhoods for their support. The Lost Voices of Cincinnati series will holistically explore the physical and social transformations three neighborhoods have experienced and endured in Cincinnati, Ohio — Avondale, Evanston, and South Cumminsville. There is so much that has been lost—some things were gained—and stuff that remains. Despite the odds, these resilient communities have worked hard to preserve their histories and build strong, vibrant neighborhoods today. This project offers these folks an auditory outlet to express their truth and help them reconcile with the permanent social and physical landscape changes rendered by past and present planning efforts. We hope that, though this project, within these communities of color, those lost voices of Cincinnati will finally be heard.
