171: How to Talk to Your Children About Empathy, Why It's Important & When to Do It

Chick Chat: The Baby Chick Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2025 37:14

Empathy is one of the most powerful skills we can teach our children — but it can feel like such a big, important topic. You might wonder, "Where do we start?" In today's fast-paced, often self-focused world, raising empathetic kids takes intention, awareness, and ongoing conversation. It's something that I find incredibly important, so that's why in this episode of Chick Chat, I sit down with Monica Berg to explore how parents can begin introducing and nurturing empathy in their children from a young age. Monica shares her wisdom on age-appropriate strategies, the impact empathy has on relationships, and how to model it through our own daily actions. Who is Monica Berg? Monica Berg is an international speaker, spiritual thought leader, bestselling author (Fear is Not an Option, Rethink Love, and The Gift of Being Different), and co-host of the Spiritually Hungry podcast. A self-proclaimed “Change Junkie,” Monica is a fresh voice that channels her many years of kabbalistic study along with personal life experiences. Monica shows individuals how to create a life that not only feels like it's working but, most importantly, a life in which they are living and loving as the powerful, fulfilled person they've always wanted to be. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, I chat with Monica about empathy in children, why it's important, and when to introduce the concept. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: How did you become passionate about spirituality?  How would you define empathy?  How should we talk about empathy and introduce the concept of it to our children? Are there age-appropriate strategies that you recommend?  How can developing empathy at a young age influence a child's future relationships and social interactions? How can parents create a safe space for children to express their emotions and develop empathy? What are some strategies parents can use at home to encourage their children to talk about their feelings?  How should parents approach the topic of empathy with children who may struggle to understand others' feelings? What long-term benefits do you see in children who grow up with a strong sense of empathy? What's one piece of advice you would offer to parents who are ready to teach their child(ren) about empathy? As you know, teaching empathy isn't a one-time conversation. It's a lifelong practice that starts at home. And, as Monica reminded us, creating a safe, emotionally rich environment where children feel seen and heard is key to helping them grow into compassionate, self-aware adults. Whether your child is a toddler just beginning to understand feelings or a tween navigating friendships, it's never too early — or too late — to nurture empathy in our children. I hope this episode inspires you to lead with love, listen more deeply, and model the kind of empathy we all want to see more of in the world. Part Three. Change isn't just a phase for Colin Savage—it's his entire identity. In this three-part series, we explore how he went from chasing change to mastering it. With experience spanning seven countries, seven secondments, and projects in over 70 nations, Colin knows what it takes to adapt, reinvent, and thrive. Forget cramming knowledge forever—Colin says lifelong learning is outdated. Instead, he's all about skill stacking, a smarter way to stay ahead. And if that wasn't enough, we're taking on AI, human intelligence, and why you absolutely need a personal AI strategy. Because let's face it—if AI is evolving, you should be too. Get ready—this episode moves fast, just like Colin's career! Key Highlights of Our Interview: Skill Stacking: Building the Professional Toolkit “Skill stacking, by contrast, is about curating abilities that complement one another professionally. It's not about learning everything, but about combining practical skills—like emotional intelligence and technical expertise—to tackle complex challenges with a well-rounded approach.” AI as a Symphony, Not a Solo “The real power of AI lies in its harmony with other tools and disciplines. No single tool can address every need, but by leveraging the strengths of multiple technologies in concert, professionals can tackle challenges faster, smarter, and more effectively.” Cheating AI? The Consequences Are Real “From students to professionals, relying on AI without human effort leads to steep penalties. A student might fail, a professional might face fraud charges. The higher the stakes, the more critical it is to leverage—not outsource—human intelligence.” From Problem-Solving to Value Creation “AI isn't just a tool for fixing problems—it's a way to grow and extend what's already working. By pairing the strengths of people and machines, businesses can unlock untapped potential and deliver results that weren't possible before. __________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Colin Savage --Chief Change Officer-- Outgrow Yourself. Get ready—this episode moves fast, just like Colin's career! Key Highlight of Our Interview: The Kung Fu Panda Approach to Change “Wise, measured, and reflective—the best change leaders channel their inner ‘Kung Fu Panda turtle.' Fewer words, deeper thought, and a collective approach to charting the path forward. Because real insight comes when you listen more than you speak.” Why Collective Decisions Matter “Making life-altering changes isn't a solo act. Consulting with those affected—be it family, colleagues, or friends—adds invaluable perspectives. Ignoring this step risks blind spots and unanticipated challenges that could have been addressed earlier.” Lifelong Learning: The Good, the Bad, and the Outdated “While lifelong learning emphasizes constant self-improvement, it often lacks focus. Simply chasing degrees, certifications, or skills without purpose can lead to a disjointed portfolio of knowledge. The real magic happens when learning is intentional and builds toward expertise.” Skill Stacking as a Career Superpower “Focused learning that combines seemingly unrelated skills can redefine your career trajectory. It's not just about learning for the sake of it—it's about intentionally connecting knowledge areas to create a broader, more adaptable toolkit for the future.” _________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Colin Savage --Chief Change Officer-- Outgrow Yourself. Part One. In this episode, Colin challenges the idea of lifelong learning (spoiler: he thinks it's outdated) and makes the case for skill stacking instead. And before we wrap, we'll dive into AI, human intelligence, and why everyone needs a personal AI strategy. Get ready—this episode moves fast, just like Colin's career! Key Highlights of Our Interview: Chasing Novelty vs. Finding Purpose “It's easy to leap into new opportunities just because they look exciting. But what's the endgame? Without a deeper reason or plan, chasing novelty can leave you with unfinished experiences and a string of ‘almost-there' moments. Purpose turns adventures into meaningful chapters.” Addicted to Change: Thrill or Trap? “Addiction to novelty isn't inherently bad—it pushes boundaries and opens up opportunities. But unbridled chasing without reflection or completion risks shallow experiences. The key? Balancing the thrill of change with the discipline to extract value from every leap.” Change as a Tool, Not a Fix “Change for the sake of novelty often leads to dissatisfaction. Instead, approach change as a tool for growth, not a quick fix. Thoughtfully evaluate your motives, assess your readiness, and embrace change as a means to align with your purpose—not as an escape from discomfort.” Japan: A Surprising Example of Measured Change “Even in traditionally conservative cultures, like Japan's life insurance industry, meaningful change can thrive. Success here came not from disruption but from careful planning, patience, and conversations that built consensus. Change, when handled thoughtfully, can flourish even in the most traditional environments.” _________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Colin Savage --Chief Change Officer-- Outgrow Yourself. Send me a messageAnn Austin joins the show today, and it's a great pleasure and a lot of fun. Ann is someone I've known for well over a decade now, and she's been plying her trade and craft in the corporate sustainability field for more than two decades. From when saying the word was met with either confusion or scorn back in 2004 to where things are at today. I like to think the scorn is now largely gone, but the confusion certainly remains for many - what do you mean sustainability means changing? Ann and I get into that today, her dedication to attempting to be and being a change agent, learning the art and science of what that involves and how her commitment to building healthy relationships has been a critical component of her working philosophy.I have come to anticipate and enjoy these types of conversations with people who have been in the field and on the frontlines of internal organisational change efforts. I find solace and relief in their experiences as it allows me to better appreciate and realise that it hasn't been and isn't just me in a state of what feels like constant struggle to get these enormous systems and machines out of states of inertia and towards positive and hopeful action. I learnt plenty from Ann in this chat, much like I did in similar ones with Lee Stewart, Cameron Tonkinwise and Jess Miller. So much of my experience this year has been in the imperfect and unique ways by which everyone in this community is attempting to do different versions of the same things - attempting to get others on the bandwagon to go from unsustainable daily practices and dangerous futures to sufficient daily practices and healthy futures. The rest of the year's events are being listed regularly - head to humanitix online and search for finding nature - hit follow so that you get automatically notified of listings and access to ticket sales, especially for the early bird savings opportunities. One last place you can sign up is at  findingnature.substack.com where each month I publish a series of contributions from other professionals working in the sustainability and impact fields on what motivates them, their philosophies and how that informs their daily lives. The most recent edition was published on the topic of help - the obvious necessity that it is for me, you and everyone else, but also the difficulty and torment it can bring up in exhibiting vulnerability and honesty when it's asked for or accepted. It's a great edition, and personally I loved being able to refer to Wayne Junior Pearce about ten times. Give it a read, offer a comment and share it to those who you think might enjoy it.The November edition is Hope - and with the next Cop rapidly coming down the content streams, I think it's something we might need a bit of. Ann spoke about the roll of planting seeds, and this quote from author Jessica Joyce is apt “hope starts with a seed.”Til next time, thanks for listening.Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. In This Episode You Will Learn About: Dealing with fear instead of letting it hold you back Challenging your belief systems Learning to love yourself Knowing when to leave your partner Having illusions of who you’ll be in a relationship Learning each others communication styles Growing your relationship to its ultimate potential Resources: Learn more: rethinklife.today Read: “Rethink Love” Read: “Fear Is Not An Option” Instagram: instagram.com/monicaberg74 Facebook: facebook.com/monicaberg74 Twitter: twitter.com/monicaberg74 Show Notes: The models that we’ve had in the past for loving ourselves, loving our family, and loving our lives have completely changed. In her latest book, “Rethink Love,” Monica Berg challenges everything we know about our belief systems around love and relationships. The more perspective that you can have, the more powerful you are in your life and the more connected you feel.   Question Highlights: Are you using a lot of the tools you came up with in your first book? What if people feel like fear is a part of their personality? Why did you focus on love for your latest book? When do you know that it’s time to leave a relationship? How do you move from fear to possibility?   Guest Bio: Monica Berg is a CHANGE JUNKIE and she wants to challenge the way you think about EVERYTHING. In her first book, FEAR IS NOT AN OPTION, she challenged readers to eradicate fear from their lives. In her latest book, RETHINK LOVE, she uses years of personal experience teaching and counseling to eradicate false belief systems around love and relationships. Monica is a mother, wife, sister, teacher, and friend, who integrates all that she is into her mission and as Chief Communications Officer of The Kabbalah Centre, she integrates her personal mission with this ancient wisdom. Monica was born and raised in Louisiana before moving to Los Angeles. At 17, she began studying Kabbalah and knew very quickly that this was her path, eventually leading her to the serendipitous meeting of Michael Berg, her now-husband of 21 years.  During her teen years, Monica developed an eating disorder that grew into a five-year battle with anorexia and body dysmorphia. With her recovery came a better understanding of the disease and a passion to help others.  However, it wasn’t until her second child was born that Monica had to reevaluate her own belief system. Her son, Joshua, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome shortly after his birth, which was life-changing for Monica and her family. The diagnosis led to Monica’s credo, “In change, there is great power,” and the choice to believe in the beauty and potential of who her son could become and subsequently who she could become.  Monica aims to challenge people and encourages them to reframe what they think they know and she’s seen the results of rethinking first hand. Monica learns from her students as often as they from her. “I’m inspired by everyone that I come into contact with,” Monica says, “Everyone has something valuable to share and we can derive meaning from each encounter.” When she’s not writing, lecturing, or working with students at the centre, Monica contributes her time and voice to Habitat for Humanity and Something For Kelly. While she is passionate about helping all people feel empowered, she is especially committed to organizations that support women, particularly those with a mission focused on overcoming eating disorders. Monica currently resides in New York City with her husband Michael and their children David, Joshua, Miriam, and Abigail.  Her second book, Rethink Love,  will be out on February 11, 2020.

Monica Berg is a Change Junkie. As the CCO of The Kabbalah Centre, her life mission is to help people improve their lives by giving them the wisdom to change their internal reality.   In this episode, we talk about the fear that surrounds change and how to shift our perspective on it so that we can embrace, thrive, and enjoy it.   Radically Vibrant Monica   I think the reason we are averse to change is because when things change that we don’t want to change, it’s a bad change I still ask myself daily, “Does this make me happy?”—if I’m not fulfilled and inspired, then I give myself to seek something else I can change what I think at any given time and I’m not stuck in any limiting thought patterns   Radically Inspired Clarity   We tend to think that material things will make us happy, but at some point we wake up and still feel that lack of By creating ideals for ourselves, like “I am a marathon runner”, we put ourselves in box created by our ego If our internal is not ruled by external stimulus, we aren’t impatient with the universe and we feel supported and fulfilled   Monica Answers…   Do we have to change our entire lives when we’re not happy or can we just change one small thing? What’s your opinion of our fast-paced world and how we can keep integrating patience into our daily lives? What’s the biggest lesson that you’ve learned this far in your life?   Radically Loved Quotes   “You have to ask yourself, what is holding me back from making the change?   “It’s important to give yourself emotional feedback each and everyday.”   “If we don’t get stuck on any one thing, we can be so many things.”   More About Our Guest   Monica Berg is a speaker and the author of Fear Is Not An Option. I used to be a change junkie, believing the next “hit” outside of me was the answer. I switched jobs five times in the same industry thinking each would bring me what I wanted. When they did not end well, depression hit and made me wonder if I was missing something. I kept thinking, “Oh boy, this will change my life!” I didn’t realize change is an inside job. We force things in life according to the fantasies we have in our heads, working tirelessly for outside change, only to find very few shifts within us. As much as we change the external, without emotional risk we aren’t changing crap. The key is to be emotionally present and open to what may come rather than making decisions based on a perceived identity of who we are… or what others expect of us. A good way to do this is to tap into your creativity and connect with what brings you joy without feeling like it’s a waste of time or detracting from your goals. Tune in to understand why flipping jobs, relationships, homes, etc. won’t solve your problems. Because wherever you go… there you are!
