Former Foursquare pastor Kenny Burchard concludes his discussion of fifteen key commonalities between the beliefs and practices of Catholicism and Pentecostalism, as a way of hopefully having more fruitful conversations about the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christians. In our final episode of the series, Kenny talks to Matt Swaim and Ken Hensley about five more elements common to Catholics and Pentecostals. So far, we've discussed: 1. Belief in the manifest, or "real" presence of God in worship 2. Ongoing spiritual gifts, miracles, and signs 3. Charisms expressed through unique callings 4. God's word spoken, read, preached, and alive 5. Impartation through the laying on of hands 6. Apostolic authority and anointing 7. Holy places, objects, and sacraments as channels of grace 8. Dreams, visions, and mystical encounters 9. Spiritual warfare and real deliverance 10. Disciplines that lead to practical holiness And in this episode, we discuss: 11. Fresh graces that follow initial conversion 12. The sobering reality of apostasy—and the call to perseverance 13. Breakthrough as the fruit of persistent, faithful prayer 14. Embodied worship: kneeling, lifting hands, incense, anointing with oil, song 15. A share in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission of Christ This discussion continues in the new book available Summer 2025 from The Coming Home Network, "Journeys Home 3: Pentecostals and Charismatics," which features thirteen conversion stories from people who come from this spiritual tradition. AMDG. “Sister, is God a person for you, or an idea?” Diocesan priest, author, and former hermit Fr. Wayne Sattler joins the Kolbecast to share his life-story from high school teacher to almost-married to hermit; his two books, which originated in his notes from years leading spiritual retreats; spiritual direction, or as he prefers to call it, “spiritual friendship”; relating to God as a person, not as an idea, which is the theme of one of his books; and so much more. To the casual observer, Pentecostals and Catholics seem to be almost polar opposites in the Christian world. What could they possibly have in common with one another? Former Foursquare pastor Kenny Burchard begins a discussion of fifteen key commonalities between the beliefs and practices of Catholicism and Pentecostalism, as a way of hopefully having more fruitful conversations about the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christians. Is it possible that your biggest step in faith begins with just saying yes—even before you know where it'll lead? Saying yes to God, even when you don't know all He's asking, is about trusting the One who's asking. It's not about having the plan—it's about knowing He's good. Mary didn't have all the details, but she said yes, and that yes changed everything. Our willingness can open the door for God to do more than we could ever imagine. I sit with Christina Semmens, author of Say Yes: Discovering Purpose, Peace, and Abundance in Daily Life, to talk about how small, daily choices can lead to a life of mission and meaning. We unpack how personal and relational evangelization isn't one-size-fits-all, and how saying yes—internally and externally—can transform your relationship with God and others. Whether you're seeking to live your faith more intentionally or just need a dose of spiritual encouragement, Christina offers practical wisdom and heartfelt insight to help you walk more closely with God and embrace your unique calling. Can something as simple as kindness really change someone's view of God? Simple acts of love and kindness are how Jesus shows up in people's lives. When someone feels seen, heard, and cared for—especially in their mess or suffering—it softens hearts. It opens a door. That's when people start to wonder, “Why are you doing this?” And we get to say, “Because Jesus loves you.” When we meet people in their suffering with compassion—feeding them, clothing them, praying with them—we're not just meeting physical needs, we're revealing the heart of Jesus. And when people experience that kind of love, they start to believe again that God is real, that He sees them, and that He hasn't forgotten them. In today's episode, I sit down with Mandy Busch and Amanda Pfeiffer to share the incredible story of how their parish community responded after an EF4 tornado struck. Instead of just reacting, they mobilized hundreds—each person using their unique spiritual gifts—to serve with compassion, leadership, and faith. We talk about how discovering and using our charisms—the gifts given by the Holy Spirit—can be a game changer for unity and fruitfulness in mission. When we stop comparing and start collaborating, the Church comes alive. Like a puzzle, every piece matters. And when we come together in love, the result is powerful. In this episode, Jim is joined by Jill Simons, Executive Director of ManyPartsMinistries.com, to explain what charisms are, how do we know what are ours, and why are they important in recovery. Our temptations often illuminate the virtue we need to develop No matter what, we have great value in the eyes and heart of God Transitions in charisms may occur at different stages of life
Oscar and Jill Simons have an honest conversation about the Holy Spirit in today's modernist world. Together they explore the power of charisms—gifts from the Holy Spirit—and how they shape our mission as baptized people. This conversation challenges listeners to consider diving deeper into what it really means to walk with the Spirit. We would love it if you could leave a written review on Apple and share with your friends! Editing provided by Forte Catholic (https://www.fortecatholic.com/)

We talk about how to discern what you're good at, how the lay person in the Catholic Church can and should get involved, and how the Body of Christ is truly enabled when Catholics figure out where they fit – and get involved there! It's a fantastic and, at times, fiery conversation! Jill loves this topic and is deeply passionate about it – and it shows! Right now in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, about a hundred of our sisters and brothers are immersed in the School of Charism Discovery – led by Father Michael Becker. But, charisms are as old as the Church, and the Twin Cities have been home to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Office for many years. Joining host Patrick Conley to talk charisms and CCRO's upcoming conference are Peter Yurek – board member of CCRO and a parishioner at Saint Peter in North Saint Paul – and Father Boniface Hicks, Benedictine monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey, Catholic priest and Director of Spiritual Formation at Saint Vincent Seminary in Pennsylvania – among other things – and speaker at the CCRO spring conference. AMDG. Think about the idea of being the answer to someone else's prayers. Does that seem humbling or overwhelming, frightening or appealing...or maybe a mix of all of those? In this episode, Sherry Weddell of the Catherine of Siena Institute visits with Bonnie and Steven about the idea of charisms. These gifts are different from sanctifying graces in that they are given to us for us to give away. Sherry explains how every baptized person receives at least one charism, how all the charisms are evangelizing and healing, and how charisms spring to fruitfulness from a lived relationship with God. In this homily given at St Pat's on Nov. 19, 2023, Fr. Miguel preaches on the Charisms of the Holy Spirit, and how knowing what God can do through us we are less tempted to bury our spiritual gifts out of fear of what he might ask us to do.
Latte and Laundry: A home for Catholic women, moms, and hearts
"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." - Romans 12:6-8This week I sit down with the lovely Jill Simons, founder of Many Parts Ministries, to discuss the importance of understanding our God-given charisms. Jill shares the treasure of recognizing the unique gifts that God has given each of us! In this episode, we begin our five part summer study of St. Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Exhortation, Christifideles Laici: on the vocation and the mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the world. We share why we are excited for the study, ways we have been personally convicted to grow in faith, and what the universal call to holiness looks like in our everyday lives. In a time when darkness seems to be growing, we ponder how Jesus is the hope for humanity and the sense of urgency we should feel in being His light bearers to the world. The Lord has called you to holiness and to bear fruit in this world, wherever you may find yourself. Friends, in our study of Christifideles Laici, you will hear us talk about the recurring theme of community. While reading this apostolic exhortation and listening to each episode by yourself will certainly bear fruit in your life, we want to take a moment to encourage you to reach out to your friends and start a small group to discuss each chapter. We provide on our website journaling and discussion questions you can use, download, and print to begin the conversations. Our hope is that wherever you are, you can build authentic friendships, rooted in Christ, with those around you. What questions do you have before we dive in? How is God calling you to recognize the sacredness of the human person in your daily life? As we discussed in the Lenten study, how have you seen God invite you on mission in this season? Where is your place in the vineyard and what does it look like? Journal Questions: What words am I speaking into my family, my community, and my culture? What sensitivities am I noticing in my heart to the challenges and limitations in the world around me? How can I help? How is God inviting me into deeper prayer and surrender in my daily life? Quote to Ponder: The gospel records that the weeds and the good grain grew together in the farmer's field. The same is true in history, where in everyday life, there often exist contradictions in the exercise of human freedom, where there is found, side by side and at times closely intertwined, evil and good, injustice and justice, anguish and hope. In this episode, we welcome Jill Simons as our guest to talk about Charisms. A charism is a grace from God we are called to use to build up His Kingdom here on earth. We acknowledge a deep lie that many people believe they don't have anything special to offer our communities or the Church, but the truth is that charisms are given to every person by God. Jill offers practical tools to help discern your charisms, the theology behind charisms, and how charisms work within our vocations. How have you silenced or hidden the gifts you've been given or the call on your heart? Journal Questions: How do I relate to my own gifts and charisms? Do I operate out of a performance mindset? How do my charisms play a role with my vocation and the people around me? What is the story of the Kingdom of God that the Lord is telling through my life and my charisms? Quote to Ponder: Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which He looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are His body. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. — St. Teresa of Ávila (attributed) Scripture for Lectio: For God's gifts and His call are irrevocable. - Romans 11:29 Sponsor - Mary's Meals: Mary's Meals sets up community-run school feeding projects in some of the world's poorest communities, where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. The idea is a simple one that works. Mary's Meals provides one daily meal in a place of learning to attract chronically poor children into the classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty. Today, Mary's Meals is providing more than 2.4 million children with a daily school meal across five continents. But the need is great! The appalling reality is that there are still 73 million children living in extreme poverty in need of school feeding. Please help to reach the next hungry child waiting for Mary's Meals.
