Five years ago, cash was involved in every fourth POS transaction in China. Today, it is involved in 1 in 14, and in two years, it is expected to be involved in just 1 in 33. The size and speed of that evaporation are undeniably impressive, but the most important lessons will be found by studying neither the size nor the speed at which those cash transactions evaporated but from studying where those transactions went. In the West, cash transactions became debit card transactions and the big banks saw them all. In China, cash transactions went into the new mobile wallet ecosystems, and as the banks became blind, the Super Apps were born. Fed with transaction data at a scale never seen before, a new type of lender emerged, and in their growth, a thousand lessons might be found. So in today's episode, I'm speaking to Richard Turrin, a Shanghai-based fintech, AI, and innovation consultant and best-selling author. We chat about his time with IBM Watson, his move to China, and how what they're doing there might inspire new ideas in the West. Richard is the author of Cashless: China's Digital Currency Revolution and Innovation Lab Excellence both of which are available on, among other places, Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B07PQP33TCBut as you will hear, he is also writing for over 2,000 followers on Substack:https://substack.com/@richturrinYou can find Richard on LinkedIn, and possibly become his 50,000th follower! https://www.linkedin.com/in/turrin/I am on LinkedIn, too, and open to new genuine connections - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendanlegrange - please also follow the show's page while you're there.Meanwhile, my action-adventure novels are on Amazon, some versions even for free, and my work with ConfirmU and our gamified psychometric scores is discussed at https://confirmu.com/ and on episode 24 of this show https://www.howtolendmoneytostrangers.show/episodes/episode-24And finally, I'm also co-creating a new podcast called hAIghtened senses which will look at the intersection between human senses and technology, especially AI-powered technology. You can already start to follow it wherever you're listening to this one - there's only a trailer there at the moment, but we've recorded some of the early episodes and it's going to be a fun ride!Keep well, Brendan Hosted on Acast. Matt Kibbe talks with Li Schoolland, who grew up in China under Mao Zedong, about the many ways that Chinese communism persecutes individuals and crushes opportunity. As elites in the U.S. increasingly look to China for ideas about economic and social governance, we have to remember that country’s abysmal record of human rights violations and grinding poverty. Not only does communism emphatically not work, but the government knows it doesn’t work, yet clings to it anyway because political power is more important than an improved life for the Chinese people. It’s a road that the U.S. must shun at every opportunity.

Culture Wars: Spheres of Influence in International Relations
In this episode, we discuss how China has used cultural spheres of influence to rise on the world stage and its effectiveness with a renowned expert on Chinese politics, Professor Minxin Pei. Using mediums such as Chinese cinema and Confucius Institutes, we analyze if China will ever surpass the U.S. as a cultural powerhouse and how it differs as an authoritarian state in appealing its culture to other countries.
Show #845 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 20th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. MERCEDES EQS ELECTRIC SEDAN TO OFFER MORE THAN 435 MILES OF RANGE "Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Daimler’s Annual Meeting organized this month was unconventional as it was hosted exclusively online. Head honcho Ola Källenius talked about how the COVID-19 outbreak has taken its toll on car sales before moving on to more exciting news.. After providing preliminary details regarding the Mercedes S-Class W223 debuting in September, Daimler’s CEO changed the subject to the EQS. He reiterated it will be a car developed from the ground up as an EV rather than being an electric conversion of the next-generation S-Class. Just like the concept presented in 2019, the production version will have a range of more than 435 miles (700 kilometers) thanks to batteries manufactured in-house at Daimler’s Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant." says Motor1.com: "The Tesla Model S Long Range Plus is touted as being the first true 400-mile EV on sale in the United States courtesy of an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles (647 kilometers). It remains to be seen whether the Mercedes EQS will be able to beat that. For the time being, the Model S available in Europe with the longest range has a WLTP-certified rating of 379 miles (610 kilometers)." https://www.motor1.com/news/434765/mercedes-eqs-435-miles-range/ ALIBABA-BACKED EV MAKER XPENG RAISES $500 MILLION. "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng Motors, backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA.N), said on Monday it has raised around $500 million in its latest funding round. As enthusiasm builds for more climate-friendly vehicles, shares of EV makers, including Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Nio Inc (NIO.N), have surged in recent months and auto makers are looking to the markets for funds." says Reuters today: "Xpeng, led by Chief Executive He Xiaopeng, is making electric G3 sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) and P7 sedans with autonomous driving capabilities in two Chinese plants. The funding will enable Xpeng to further develop intelligent vehicle technologies. The company plans to have about 200 showrooms in China by the end of this year." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-xpeng-fundraising-electric/alibaba-backed-ev-maker-xpeng-raises-500-million-idUKKCN24L05Z TESLA WILL LEASE YOU A MODEL Y FOR $499 PER MONTH "The Long Range starts at $49,990 after a recent price reduction. The Performance carries a starting price of $59,990. If you finance through Tesla, the Model Y Long Range will cost you about $699 per month for 72 months with $4,500 down. That's at 2.49% APR. Now, you can choose to lease the Model Y through Tesla. The deal works out to $499 per month for 36 months with $4,500 due at signing. It's a 10,000-mile-per-year lease, which is common among luxury vehicle" according to InsideEVs: "Leasing is popular in the U.S., so Tesla is likely taking advantage of this as another tool to increase demand. It also means people who may not be able to afford an expensive car can fit the Model Y in their budget. Leases are very common for luxury vehicles. Even at zero-percent interest, financing a $50,000 car results in a significant monthly payment." https://insideevs.com/features/434837/tesla-model-y-lease-deal-499-month/. CATL WILL SOON BE SHIPPING LFP BATTERIES FOR TESLA CHINA MODEL 3S "CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.) who is currently China’s largest battery manufacturer today (with 28% of the global battery market) confirmed that it will start shipping it’s LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate Batteries) later this month directly to Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, for use in its China-only, entry level, Model 3 Standard Range Plus EVs." says Torque News: "Currently, today’s Chinese Model 3s get their batteries from Panasonic, who has been the sole battery provider for Tesla so far (LG also has a battery contract with Tesla for Chinese battery production) and it looks like CATL will start to ship LFP battery cells to Giga Shanghai sometime this month. And even though LFP prismatic battery packs are more difficult to cool, and provide lower energy density than Panasonic’s NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) or LG Chem’s NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries which Tesla uses, the Model 3 SP LFP should offer comparable EV range, possibly using a larger capacity pack, or using CATL’s cell-to-pack technology." https://www.torquenews.com/5474/catl-will-soon-be-shipping-lfp-batteries-tesla-china-model-3s TESLA SEMI PILOT LINE “COMING TOGETHER” — EMPLOYEE LEAK "A Tesla employee based at Tesla Gigafactory 1 in Nevada has indicated that the pilot production line for the Tesla Semi is under development, implying that things seem to be going well. This person tweeted last week, “New nugget: pilot line for Semi coming together….”" says CleanTechnica: "This person has provided insight on a number of factors in the past year — vehicle production line development in Fremont as the Model Y has rolled out and the use of Tesla’s Lathrop facility a bit northeast of Fremont as a parts supply facility and for vehicle casting, for example — but he has primarily provided insight on battery production. He first responded to a discussion about battery production at the gigafactory on September 20, 2019" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/20/tesla-semi-pilot-line-coming-together-employee-leak/ UK’S FIRST BATTERY GIGAPLANT MOVES A STEP CLOSER Britishvolt is pleased to announce that it has signed an MOU with the Welsh Government as both parties work together on plans to develop a commercially viable 30 GWh battery manufacturing plant, and supplementary 200MW solar plant, at the former RAF base at Bro Tathan, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. After six months of careful analysis, the site was narrowed down from over 40 locations, due to a number of factors including: import/export accessibility, availability of labour and skilled staff, and convenient geographical proximity to customers and local industrial companies. Both parties have now signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), to collaborate on the potential of building the UK’s first full cycle battery cell gigaplant subject to UK government funding through the Automotive Transformation Fund, to produce lithium ion cylindrical and pouch cells primarily servicing the automotive market. https://britishvolt.com/news/britishvolt-welsh-government-ink-mou-for-building-uks-first-ev-battery-gigaplant/ GIGA BERLIN MEETS MORE BUREAUCRACY IN GERMANY "The trouble surrounding permissions to build the Tesla Gigafactory in Germany continues, local media reports. The company charged with covering the water requirements for Giga Berlin has stopped planning." says electrive: "Regional broadcaster RBB reports this online, citing an internal letter from the Strauss-Erkner (WSE) water association. At the heart of the problem are unsigned contracts and future estimations. German authorities in Brandenburg had greenlighted Tesla to lay the foundations for the planned plant in Grünheide just a week ago – and despite the full environmental permit still pending. The Californians have been struggling with the permits since months, after environmental group’s objected the plans, forcing Tesla to redraft the planning permission. One concern was the factory’s water consumption, and Tesla reduced the planned water consumption in the application documents." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/20/giga-berlin-under-threat-from-german-bureaucracy/ WE CHARGE: VOLKSWAGEN’S NEW CHARGING SERVICE HAS OVER 150,000 PUBLIC CHARGING POINTS Volkswagen is rolling out its own charging service to coincide with the market launch of the ID. family: With We Charge, customers will be able to charge their electric vehicles at over 150,000 public charging points all over Europe. The We Charge charging card gives them easy access to these charging points. Customers have a choice of three individual tariffs with features such as exclusive conditions for the IONITY high-power charging network. We Charge can be booked and used from mid-August. Volkswagen is thus rounding off its “charging ecosystem” that makes charging electric vehicles as convenient as possible. The We Charge Free basic tariff does not have a monthly fee. It essentially provides access to charging via a single charging card – and is best suited to drivers who only rarely use public charging points to charge their electric cars. We Charge Go offers lower prices for individual charging processes and is the right choice for regular users of public charging points. We Charge Plus is the tariff for all frequent drivers. For example, they only pay 30 eurocent per kilowatt-hour for IONITY in Germany and can therefore use the pan-European high-power charging network at a very attractive price. TESLA MODEL S REFRESH WITH MINIMALIST INTERIOR "CNBC reports the Model S refresh will be modeled after the Model 3 in many ways, with a new minimalist interior like the one that received a lot of attention on the smaller car, premium seats from the Long Range and Performance Model 3, and the new drive units from the Model 3, including different motors, inverter and gearbox." writes Jalopnik today: "CNBC also reports the car will get a battery capable of 400 miles of range, which would be an increase over the current max EPA estimated range of 370 miles for the Long Range S, and the updated model is “aiming” for a production start in September of this year." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-model-s-refresh-with-minimalist-interior-and-mode-1835094478 FERRARI TO ADAPT SF90 STRADALE’S HYBRID TECH FOR FUTURE MODELS "There’s a new Ferrari and it’s a hybrid. That shouldn't come as a surprise these days after the success and warm reception of the LaFerrari, the brand’s first-ever electrified production vehicle. The new SF90 Stradale is now effectively the most-powerful road-going Ferrari in history with its 986 horsepower (735 kilowatts) coming from a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This mill will be adapted for use in more future models of Ferrari as the brand is exploring new possibilities on the market." according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "The SF90 Stradale’s propulsion system consists of a 4.0-liter V8 producing 769 hp (573 kW) and 590 pound-feet (800 Newton-meters) of torque, which is supported by three lithium-ion powered electric motors. There’s one located on the rear axle, and two more up front for an additional 217 hp (162 kW). Power reaches all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission." https://www.motor1.com/news/352217/ferrari-adopt-hybrid-powertrain-models/ And Jeff Perez who also writes for Motor1 said: "But for drivers feeling especially efficient off the track, the SF90 offers a pure electric driving mode. With a range of 16 miles (25 kilometers), a maximum electric speed of 84 mph (135 kmh), and plug-in charging capability, the SF90 is perfectly content puttering around Maranello in complete silence as it is tearing up the circuit with its engine screeching toward redline." https://www.motor1.com/news/352073/ferrari-sf90-stradale-details-unveiled/ HYUNDAI INTRODUCES ELECTRIC DOUBLE-DECKER BUS Hyundai Motor unveiled an electric double-decker bus which is a first of its kind for Hyundai, and is part of the company’s effort to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. The all-new electric double-decker bus is shown at the ‘Land, Infrastructure and Transport To develop the company’s first electric double-decker bus, Hyundai worked for 18 months on a project supported by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which began in 2017. As part of the company’s effort to increase efficiency and to reduce vehicle emissions, Hyundai equipped the all-new electric bus with a 384 kWh water-cooled high-efficiency polymer battery, with a maximum 300 km driving range on a single charge. A full charge can be completed in 72 minutes. The price available for presale is expected to be unveiled at the same time." according to Gasgoo: "Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai is planned to complete the construction of stamping, bodywork, painting and assembly workshops in September 2019, according to an official document released by local ecology and environment authority. Besides, the seat production area, the powertrain workshop and the electric motor workshop are likely to be finished in March next year." http://autonews.gasgoo.com/m/Detail/70016003.html CONSUMERS ENERGY LAUNCHES PROGRAM TO HELP ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS "Consumers Energy has launched a program that will make it easier for owners of electric vehicles to charge their vehicles." says UpNorthLive: "Consumers Energy’s PowerMIDrive Rebate Program, available beginning June 5, includes the following: RESIDENTIAL – Rebates for residential electric vehicle owners of between $400 to $500 for installing eligible 240-volt chargers at homes across the state. Longtime China-Africa scholar Luke Patey, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute of International Affairs, is among a growing number of analysts who believe that the outcome of this year's FOCAC summit clearly demonstrated that Africa now has a diminished role in China's global economic agenda. Luke joins Eric & Cobus to discuss what's behind this trend and his provocative column in the Financial Times on why the "Chinese Model is Failing Africa." Join the discussion. Do you agree with Luke and other scholars who suggest that we may have reached the peak of China's economic engagement in Africa as China now looks elsewhere for safer, more profitable investments? "For poor countries, China is no model" declares Zambian economist and author Dambisa Moyo in a September Wall Street Journal essay. Moyo's criticism of the Chinese economic model and its applicability for developing countries seemingly marks a dramatic evolution of her thinking with regards to the Chinese in Africa. For years, Moyo was among the most vocal supporters of China's economic engagement on the continent, but, just as the nature of the PRC's investments in Africa have evolved, so has apparently Moyo's thinking on the subject.
Chinese companies do innovate. They just do it differently. China may not be known yet as a hotbed of innovation, but the signs are hard to ignore. A growing number of firms are creating new products and developing entirely new businesses that are changing the paradigm of Chinese innovation. In this podcast, Nick Leung discusses more
