Egg Meets Sperm
Fertility Over 35? The TRUTH About Age (Dr. Aumatma)

Egg Meets Sperm

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2025 45:39

I recently joined Dr. Susan Fox on her podcast to challenge damaging fertility myths and share insights from my 15+ years as a Naturopathic Endocrinologist. We discussed everything from the false "fertility cliff" at 35 to the overlooked male factors in conception and pregnancy loss. As the creator of the Restorative Fertility Method and host of the Egg Meets Sperm Podcast, I was thrilled to share evidence-based perspectives that empower couples on their fertility journey.Key Topics We ExploredThe Fertility Age MythI debunked the pervasive myth that fertility dramatically declines after 35—a belief with surprisingly non-scientific origins. The truth is that fertility decline is gradual, not a cliff, and biological age (influenced by lifestyle factors) matters far more than chronological age. This shift in perspective is crucial for women who feel pressured by their "biological clock."Male Fertility's Critical RoleOne of my passions is highlighting how male factors contribute to approximately 50% of infertility cases and are significantly linked to recurrent pregnancy loss. I challenged the patriarchal notion that male fertility remains robust indefinitely and discussed specific markers that are rarely tested but critically important:Sperm DNA fragmentationHomocysteine levelsHemoglobin A1CThese factors can dramatically affect pregnancy viability even when standard semen analyses appear normal.Root Causes of Fertility ChallengesWe explored the multifaceted root causes of fertility issues, including:Gut health and microbiome balanceHormone regulationLiver functionConditions like PCOS and endometriosisI emphasized that addressing these foundational health factors can significantly improve natural conception rates and IVF success.Practical Tips for Male PartnersI shared actionable advice for men to optimize their fertility:Avoid fragrances and products containing phthalatesConsume diverse vegetables for micronutrientsMinimize EMF exposure (keep phones/laptops away from the groin)Prioritize sleep and maintain healthy circadian rhythmsFertility as VitalityThroughout our conversation, I emphasized my core philosophy: fertility health is a reflection of overall vitality. The same factors that optimize reproductive function also enhance longevity, energy, and wellness throughout life.About the HostDr. Susan Fox has been helping women and couples overcome infertility and enjoy healthy pregnancies for more than 23 years. Today I'm looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Susan Fox. She's a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and she's the creator of the "Your Fertile Health Program" as well as the "Best Prep for Pregnancy - Naturally or through IVF or Egg Freezing" Online Summit. So many people out there are struggling with fertility and going through the IVF process with all the stresses that come with it. They're needing help and guidance, but might not know where to turn or what their options are. I think it's wonderful that Dr. Susan is offering fertility support from a Chinese medicine perspective. In my practice I also help many couples to conceive naturally and/or through IVF, and to prevent a miscarriage, with a naturopathic approach. It is so rewarding to help people to create the family of their dreams. As with most health concerns, including preparation for pregnancy and prevention of pregnancy loss, it is when we use strategies from all systems of medicine that we can achieve improved results. It's not about choosing one approach or another. Natural approaches can be combined with allopathic approaches to improve fertility outcomes. I'm excited to share that today on The Egg Whisperer Show, I'm airing an interview where Dr. Susan Fox hosted me on her podcast!  We dive into a topic I'm passionate about—egg freezing—and Dr. Fox asks whether I involve acupuncturists during egg freezing cycles. The answer is YES!  I truly believe that building a "Fertility TEAM" is essential for a joyful and supported fertility journey. For me, TEAM stands for Therapy, Eating, Exercise, Acupuncture, Mindfulness, and Meditation. It's not just about getting through tough moments; it's about feeling supported and empowered throughout the entire process. As you'll hear me share, there's no better time to build your fertility TEAM than at the beginning of your journey. The time to build it isn't when you have a devastating result. It's important to be supported throughout the process because it's not easy, and I want the journey to be one of joy. Acupuncture plays a huge role in helping patients feel more relaxed, improve recovery, and even feel stronger in early pregnancy. The right acupuncturist, with a true specialty in fertility, can be a game-changer. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website. On today's episode of the Badass Fertility Podcast we sit down with Dr Susan Fox. As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and 5 Element Acupuncture for the last 23 years, Dr. Fox specializes in women's health and fertility. We dive deep into the mind body connection exploring how everything from our personalities to our periods can be explained, understood and optimized using this 5,000+ year old system Dr. Susan shares her decades of experience in this field. Among the top insights we cover are: Demand your right to grieve. Grief is the flip side of love. When something you love is missing or threatened grief is natural. Honor your grief. Why infertility is an overused and inaccurate term.  Why clinical sub-fertility is a more accurate and helpful term to describe most women's struggle to get or stay pregnant The Western medical model is great for many things, but it divides the human body into inaccurately discreet parts without accounting for the whole. Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at body-mind and spirit to paint a richer picture of the patient and diagnose treatment on all levels. Kathryn has had her own experience with IVF and she sheds light on the fact that even if you do the right things for your body during your IVF journey, you may still need some help for your mind and the emotions that you go through while trying to conceive. Kathryn's JourneyKathryn got married at 36 and she felt like she was already “behind” and had a deeply ingrained fear of the clock ticking. Looking back now, she realized that 36 is still a young age to try to start a family as she found so many ways to try to get pregnant with her husband. However, although there are physical conditions and battles women have to face during their late 30s while they try to conceive, the unspoken battle with your mind and emotions is another thing you need to take into consideration. Kathryn shares on how she was able to set her mind straight and get out of the fight or flight mode so that she can turn her dreams of having a baby with her husband. Why You Should Listen To This Episode You might be in the same situation Kathryn was years ago, and she is here to tell you that it's okay to take a break, it's okay to process what you are going through, and it's okay to take a step back and honor what you are feeling. When you do these, you just might be surprised with what is in store for you and how easier it could be for you to conceive because when you take a breather, you will understand your body better and be in tune with what you need to do and the decisions you will be making! Also, Kathryn will share what happens when people decide to work with her and not being limited by the power of science. Tune in to this episode with Kathryn so you can learn more about the options that you have, the importance of having a support system, and a coach who can guide you so you make more informed decisions! State lawmakers are in Helena this week for the first-ever Legislative Week, a five-day series of training sessions, interim committee meetings, and social events aimed at fostering “cross-pollination” among legislators, according to the Legislature’s website. Legislative Week is born of a study resulting from the 2019 session’s Senate Bill 310, which seeks to gauge the potential of holding annual legislative sessions, rather than the current biennial session schedule. Susan Fox, executive director of the nonpartisan Legislative Services Division, joined Montana Free Press editor-in-chief John S. Adams for a Montana Lowdown podcast discussion about what she expects — and does not expect — to take place during Legislative Week. Fox also reflects on her 30 years of experience working in Legislative Services, noting an increase in partisanship, and declining opportunities for new legislators to grow into leadership positions.  “[Legislators] don’t have time to mature like they used to,” she tells Adams. “And I remember in the past, leaders ... would slowly work their way up to committee chairmanship, and then they might, in another session or two, become a whip, and then become a leader. But they don’t have time to do that now — you just have to get in and start [leading].” Fox also says she’s seen a lack of understanding between those legislators tasked with drafting the state’s budget and those who develop policies, a dynamic that helped lead to the passage of Senate Bill 310.  “Budget and policy are kind of two different tracks,” Fox says. “And [legislators] really feel like it’s disjointed. The budget people don’t understand the policy people, and the policy people don’t understand the budget.” The SB 310 study explores the prospect of annual sessions with alternating focuses on the state budget and policy-related law.  Fox’s conversation with Adams is featured on this week’s Montana Lowdown Podcast, a production of Montana Free Press.

December 21st is the winter solstice, the first day of winter but with ever changing climate conditions, we're seeing freezing temperatures and snow as earlier in the year and further south than many are used to. Extreme fluctuations in temperature, can wreak havoc on roses, seriously damaging or killing them. Since roses can be a significant investment in both time and money, these aren't the kind of shrubs growers want to risk losing due to extreme weather.Whether you need to protect them from a polar vortex by covering them in a blanket of leaves in a leaf bag ("Chicago Method" displayed), or just need to provide some seasonal winter care, we welcome back rosarian Susan Fox, or as many know her, Gaga's Garden, on this #plantchat episode. She's got some great tips and insights that will help your roses survive through the winter and thrive in spring, no matter what zone you're in. How Young Is Too Young to Attend Concerts?

Last week, Michael Tilson Thomas was conducting the New World Symphony in Miami when he stopped the concert in its tracks. A fidgety child and her mother were in his line of sight, and he reportedly asked them to change seats. Some details remain unclear but the mom and child did more than that – they left the hall. The incident caused quite a sensation on the Internet and raised questions: What is the appropriate age for kids to start attending grown-up concerts? And how do you prepare them for the experience? In this podcast, we get three views, from Orli Shaham, a pianist, mother of twins and artistic director of Baby Got Bach, a concert series intended for kids ages 3 to 6; Sedgwick Clark the editor of Musical America and a steadfast concert-goer around New York; and Susan Fox, a founder and publisher of the online forum Park Slope Parents. In the first part of the segment we ask whether young children should attend concerts: Clark says an affirmative "no." Fox contends that "you need to be willing to jump ship" if your child can no longer sit still through the music. And Shaham notes that concert-going requires careful preparation. Host Naomi Lewin also asks for tips for parents who are considering bringing their children to a concert. Responses include "find an aisle seat near a door," "give them some chewing gum," "start with shorter concerts" and simply, "teach them to sit with boredom." Listen to the full segment above and tell us in the comments box below: how do you prepare kids for a concert? Would you want to sit next to a young child at a concert?
