El Garaje Hermético de Máximo Sant
¡No a los Taxis! La decadencia de Mercedes

El Garaje Hermético de Máximo Sant

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2024 18:25

A lot has changed since the last time Ola was on Decoder. Back then, he said Mercedes would have an all-EV lineup by 2030 — a promise a whole lot of car companies, including Mercedes, have now had to soften or walk back. But he doesn't see that as a setback at all, and he and Mercedes are both still committed to phasing out gas in the long run. We also spent some time talking about what's happening both on the outside of cars — Mercedes' classic look and its EV look aren't necessarily quite in the same place — and on the inside of them, as infotainment becomes a huge point of competition and design. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius became CEO in 2019 but has been working for Mercedes since 1993 in almost every part of the company. During that period, Mercedes spent time getting a lot bigger; the company famously merged with Chrysler for a time, forming a giant called DaimlerChrysler. But, over the past few years, it's actually been getting much smaller and more focused. The Chrysler deal was undone and, just recently, Ola spun off the truck division into its own public company called Daimler Truck, leaving Mercedes-Benz to stand alone as a premium car brand. Car companies are either consolidating into giant conglomerates like Stellantis or shrinking and focusing like Mercedes. A lot of that is driven by the huge shift to electric vehicles and then, on top of that, to cars essentially becoming rolling computers. You'll hear Ola refer to cars as “digital products” a lot — and to Mercedes itself as a tech company. (Actually, he says it's a luxury and tech company.) Mercedes now has two new EVs, the EQS and the EQE, both of which have massive infotainment screens running Mercedes' proprietary MBUX system, which even has its own voice assistant called Hey Mercedes. I had to ask Ola about Apple's recent announcement that the next version of CarPlay would be able to take over every display in the car, including the instrument cluster. Apple showed a Mercedes logo on a slide during that presentation — so, is Ola ready to hand over his UI to Cupertino?  Let's find out. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz. Here we go. Show #845   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 20th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MERCEDES EQS ELECTRIC SEDAN TO OFFER MORE THAN 435 MILES OF RANGE "Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Daimler’s Annual Meeting organized this month was unconventional as it was hosted exclusively online. Head honcho Ola Källenius talked about how the COVID-19 outbreak has taken its toll on car sales before moving on to more exciting news.. After providing preliminary details regarding the Mercedes S-Class W223 debuting in September, Daimler’s CEO changed the subject to the EQS. He reiterated it will be a car developed from the ground up as an EV rather than being an electric conversion of the next-generation S-Class. Just like the concept presented in 2019, the production version will have a range of more than 435 miles (700 kilometers) thanks to batteries manufactured in-house at Daimler’s Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant." says Motor1.com: "The Tesla Model S Long Range Plus is touted as being the first true 400-mile EV on sale in the United States courtesy of an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles (647 kilometers). It remains to be seen whether the Mercedes EQS will be able to beat that. For the time being, the Model S available in Europe with the longest range has a WLTP-certified rating of 379 miles (610 kilometers)."   https://www.motor1.com/news/434765/mercedes-eqs-435-miles-range/   ALIBABA-BACKED EV MAKER XPENG RAISES $500 MILLION. "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng Motors, backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA.N), said on Monday it has raised around $500 million in its latest funding round. As enthusiasm builds for more climate-friendly vehicles, shares of EV makers, including Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Nio Inc (NIO.N), have surged in recent months and auto makers are looking to the markets for funds." says Reuters today: "Xpeng, led by Chief Executive He Xiaopeng, is making electric G3 sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) and P7 sedans with autonomous driving capabilities in two Chinese plants. The funding will enable Xpeng to further develop intelligent vehicle technologies. The company plans to have about 200 showrooms in China by the end of this year."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-xpeng-fundraising-electric/alibaba-backed-ev-maker-xpeng-raises-500-million-idUKKCN24L05Z   TESLA WILL LEASE YOU A MODEL Y FOR $499 PER MONTH "The Long Range starts at $49,990 after a recent price reduction. The Performance carries a starting price of $59,990. If you finance through Tesla, the Model Y Long Range will cost you about $699 per month for 72 months with $4,500 down. That's at 2.49% APR. Now, you can choose to lease the Model Y through Tesla. The deal works out to $499 per month for 36 months with $4,500 due at signing. It's a 10,000-mile-per-year lease, which is common among luxury vehicle" according to InsideEVs: "Leasing is popular in the U.S., so Tesla is likely taking advantage of this as another tool to increase demand. It also means people who may not be able to afford an expensive car can fit the Model Y in their budget. Leases are very common for luxury vehicles. Even at zero-percent interest, financing a $50,000 car results in a significant monthly payment."   https://insideevs.com/features/434837/tesla-model-y-lease-deal-499-month/.   CATL WILL SOON BE SHIPPING LFP BATTERIES FOR TESLA CHINA MODEL 3S "CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.) who is currently China’s largest battery manufacturer today (with 28% of the global battery market) confirmed that it will start shipping it’s LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate Batteries) later this month directly to Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, for use in its China-only, entry level, Model 3 Standard Range Plus EVs." says Torque News: "Currently, today’s Chinese Model 3s get their batteries from Panasonic, who has been the sole battery provider for Tesla so far (LG also has a battery contract with Tesla for Chinese battery production) and it looks like CATL will start to ship LFP battery cells to Giga Shanghai sometime this month. And even though LFP prismatic battery packs are more difficult to cool, and provide lower energy density than Panasonic’s NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) or LG Chem’s NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries which Tesla uses, the Model 3 SP LFP should offer comparable EV range, possibly using a larger capacity pack, or using CATL’s cell-to-pack technology."   https://www.torquenews.com/5474/catl-will-soon-be-shipping-lfp-batteries-tesla-china-model-3s   TESLA SEMI PILOT LINE “COMING TOGETHER” — EMPLOYEE LEAK "A Tesla employee based at Tesla Gigafactory 1 in Nevada has indicated that the pilot production line for the Tesla Semi is under development, implying that things seem to be going well. This person tweeted last week, “New nugget: pilot line for Semi coming together….”" says CleanTechnica: "This person has provided insight on a number of factors in the past year — vehicle production line development in Fremont as the Model Y has rolled out and the use of Tesla’s Lathrop facility a bit northeast of Fremont as a parts supply facility and for vehicle casting, for example — but he has primarily provided insight on battery production. He first responded to a discussion about battery production at the gigafactory on September 20, 2019"   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/20/tesla-semi-pilot-line-coming-together-employee-leak/   UK’S FIRST BATTERY GIGAPLANT MOVES A STEP CLOSER Britishvolt is pleased to announce that it has signed an MOU with the Welsh Government as both parties work together on plans to develop a commercially viable 30 GWh battery manufacturing plant, and supplementary 200MW solar plant, at the former RAF base at Bro Tathan, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. After six months of careful analysis, the site was narrowed down from over 40 locations, due to a number of factors including: import/export accessibility, availability of labour and skilled staff, and convenient geographical proximity to customers and local industrial companies. Both parties have now signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), to collaborate on the potential of building the UK’s first full cycle battery cell gigaplant subject to UK government funding through the Automotive Transformation Fund, to produce lithium ion cylindrical and pouch cells primarily servicing the automotive market.   https://britishvolt.com/news/britishvolt-welsh-government-ink-mou-for-building-uks-first-ev-battery-gigaplant/   GIGA BERLIN MEETS MORE BUREAUCRACY IN GERMANY "The trouble surrounding permissions to build the Tesla Gigafactory in Germany continues, local media reports. The company charged with covering the water requirements for Giga Berlin has stopped planning." says electrive: "Regional broadcaster RBB reports this online, citing an internal letter from the Strauss-Erkner (WSE) water association. At the heart of the problem are unsigned contracts and future estimations. German authorities in Brandenburg had greenlighted Tesla to lay the foundations for the planned plant in Grünheide just a week ago – and despite the full environmental permit still pending. The Californians have been struggling with the permits since months, after environmental group’s objected the plans, forcing Tesla to redraft the planning permission. One concern was the factory’s water consumption, and Tesla reduced the planned water consumption in the application documents."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/20/giga-berlin-under-threat-from-german-bureaucracy/   WE CHARGE: VOLKSWAGEN’S NEW CHARGING SERVICE HAS OVER 150,000 PUBLIC CHARGING POINTS Volkswagen is rolling out its own charging service to coincide with the market launch of the ID. family: With We Charge, customers will be able to charge their electric vehicles at over 150,000 public charging points all over Europe. The We Charge charging card gives them easy access to these charging points. Customers have a choice of three individual tariffs with features such as exclusive conditions for the IONITY high-power charging network. We Charge can be booked and used from mid-August. Volkswagen is thus rounding off its “charging ecosystem” that makes charging electric vehicles as convenient as possible.   The We Charge Free basic tariff does not have a monthly fee. It essentially provides access to charging via a single charging card – and is best suited to drivers who only rarely use public charging points to charge their electric cars. We Charge Go offers lower prices for individual charging processes and is the right choice for regular users of public charging points. We Charge Plus is the tariff for all frequent drivers. For example, they only pay 30 eurocent per kilowatt-hour for IONITY in Germany and can therefore use the pan-European high-power charging network at a very attractive price.   JEEP RENEGADE 4XE PLUG-IN GYBRID GOES ON SALE IN EUROPE With its most recent step into the world of electrification, the Jeep plug-in hybrid propulsion solution is capable of enhancing the legendary off-road capability of its line-up of SUVs, starting with the Renegade 4xe plug-in hybrid. Show #721   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 9th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   50,000 MERCEDES-BENZ EQC TO BE PRODUCED THIS YEAR "It's not easy to introduce electric cars at a high scale - large OEMs are learning the hard way. Earlier this year we heard that Mercedes-Benz's troubles with lithium-ion battery supplies threatened the planned production rate of the all-electric EQC model. The company admits that production of the EQC is a "learning curve"." says InsideEVs: "Mercedes-Benz R&D board member Markus Schafer recently said that the company is back on track with EQC production at a rate that should allow it to achieve 50,000 EQC units in 2020. The main problem seems to be battery constraints from LG Chem's plant in Poland - hopefully now solved for good."   He said: "It’s definitely a new game, dealing with new platforms, dealing with an EV. The issue was not driven by the factory or production process but rather from the battery factory and battery equipment. The ramping up of the battery plant with €700m investment in LG Chem was definitely a challenge and limiting factor. So far, we have overcome the issues and are planning significant numbers for the EQC - returning to the initial number of 50,000 we expected for this year.”   Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 specs: range of 417 km (259 miles) (WLTP) 80 kWh battery pack (384 cells) 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds dual motor all-wheel drive   https://insideevs.com/news/402925/50000-mercedes-eqc-production-2020/   MERCEDES G-CLASS ELECTRIC VERSION DUE ‘IN A FEW YEARS’ "In terms of pop culture, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has got to be one of the most iconic SUVs, usually shown as the go-to car for bad guys, mobsters, or rich, powerful individuals with a lot of money to burn." says Motor1: Mercedes-Benz has announced that initial sketches and concept work have begun on the EV version of the G-Class. In lieu of the canceled Geneva Motor Show, CarAdvice spoke to Mercedes-Benz Cars CEO and Daimler AG Chairman, Ola Källenius".   He said: "Yes, the G is going to go electric, we have kicked off the concept work for this, so in a few years you’ll be able to go electric with the G as well."   https://www.motor1.com/news/402878/mercedes-g-class-ev-version/   2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S INSTRUMENTED RANGE TEST "when the EPA released battery range numbers for the 2020 Taycan—201 miles for the Turbo and 192 for the Turbo S—it was Porsche's engineering equivalent of the Titanic hitting the iceberg." says Motor Trend: Naturally, the Tesla community gloated. The Taycan appears to be Europe's EV strike three after Jaguar and Audi swung and missed with the I-Pace's (optimistic) 234 miles and the E-Tron's 204. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus carries a claimed 390-mile range—nearly double the miles before you start getting nervous about finding a Supercharger.  Porsche commissioned a test by independent testing firm AMCI, which came up with distances 37 percent (275 miles) and 45 percent (278 miles) greater over a mixed city/highway course. "   Motor Trend said: "Now it's our turn, with our instrumentation. To save you further suspense, here are our city, highway, and combined ranges for the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S: Normal mode (one loop): 240/274/254 city/highway/combined miles."   https://www.motortrend.com/news/longest-range-electric-cars-2020-19-evs-can-go-distance/   MEV BEEANYWHERE IS AN AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CUTY CAR BORN IN THE UK "Earlier this week Dacia unveiled the Spring Electric concept, which it claimed would be “Europe’s most affordable all-electric vehicle” when it reaches production in early 2021. Some Might Say that’s great news, but Manchester-based startup MeV has claimed its ‘BeeAnywhere’ EV will be significantly cheaper" reports Top Gear: "Apparently, the two-seat ‘urban vehicle’ has been designed from the outset to be affordable, with prices set to be similar to that of an eight-year-old second-hand hatchback. That’s about the only specific detail we’ve been given on the BeeAnywhere so far though, other than the fact that She’s Electric (of course) and will feature an ‘innovative chassis design’ with graphene-based composite body panels to reduce production and component costs."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/mev-beeanywhere-urban-ev-manchester   QEV IS THE FIFTH TEAM TO ANNOUNCE TO ENTER THE 2021 EXTREME E "The Spanish technology firm QEV Technologies will be entering the 2021 Extreme E season, becoming the fifth team to announce their participation in the all-new electric off-road series." writes The Checkered Flag: "The firm is known worldwide for its electric innovations as they design and manufacture electric drivetrains for different motorsport disciplines. They are involved in the ABB Formula E, currently with NIO 333 Formula E team which secured the driver’s title in the first season with Nelson Piquet Jr. Former Fomula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa will become the Team Principal."   https://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2020/03/qev-is-the-fifth-team-to-announce-to-enter-the-2021-extreme-e/   VW WILL BE THE 1ST MASS MARKET ELECTRIC CAR PROFIT MAKER "Volkswagen will become the first global automaker to make money selling battery-only electric vehicles (BEVs) with profits kicking in from 2022, according to a report from Swiss investment bank UBS." says Forbes: "That might raise eyebrows at General Motors, which last week at its EV day said its electric vehicles will be profitable, but didn’t say when. The prediction for VW will also be welcomed by investors, given that the company plans to spend $36 billion through 2024 on a family of electric cars right across its mass market brands. The UBS report is also bad news for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which will only account for 1.4% globally by 2025."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2020/03/09/vw-will-be-the-1st-mass-market-electric-car-profit-maker-report/#190da6005415   HONDA CLARITY ELECTRIC QUIETLY DISCONTINUED FOR 2020 "Honda has pulled the plug on the Honda Clarity Electric. The pun is totally intended." writes Roadshow by CNET: "the Japanese automaker said it discontinued the Clarity Electric at the end of 2019. Right now, according to the report, there's no plans for the model to return. Honda confirmed the EV's death with Roadshow and said in a statement, "We will be introducing new, highly appealing all-electric vehicles for the U.S. market in the years ahead." The battery-electric version of the Clarity rounded out a diverse lineup of alternative-fuel options housed in the nameplate. Honda still sells a plug-in hybrid version of the Clarity."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-clarity-electric-discontinued-availability/                 ERA OF WIRELESS CHARGING FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES IS COMING "The more electric cars roam around the city, the more will be the demand for wireless charging. The global wireless electric vehicle charging market is expected to reach $1.48 billion by 2025" reports Renewable Energy magazine: "Currently, very limited number of countries are working on wireless charging for electric vehicles. Recently, the director of the Joint Transportation Research Program at Purdue University announced a collaboration with Germany-based Magment Concrete Wireless Power. The partnership aims to fulfill the future needs of electric vehicles including wireless charging."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/era-of-wireless-charging-for-electric-vehicles-20200309   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Why do you think Tesla are quietly delivering the Model Y without the usual fanfare?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #718   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 6th March 2020. U.S.-BUILT ELECTRIC FORD TRANSIT WILL CHANGE THE VAN WORLD "The best selling commercial van in the world is going electric, and that could change the entire fleet market." reports Jalopnik: "Ford already takes a huge cut of that market, selling almost a quarter of a million Transits in 2019. While the full details of the new Transit EV—like range, power output, and cost—haven’t been unveiled yet, Ford says this will all come out soon. Perhaps it’ll be a New York Auto Show thing."   Jim Farley, COO, Ford Motor Company: "Commercial vehicles are a critical component to our big bet on electrification, As leaders in this space, we are accelerating our plans to create solutions that help businesses run better, starting with our all-electric Transit and F-150. This Ford Transit isn’t just about creating an electric drivetrain, it’s about designing and developing a digital product that propels fleets forward.”   Ars Technica points out: "just like the full-size pickups so beloved by US trades—it will come in a variety of sizes, with three different body lengths, three different roof heights, and different cabin and body options."   Slashgear said: "There’ll be a cargo van version, a cutaway, a chassis cab, and three different roof heights, Ford suggests. That should help the electric Transit be more than a one-off novelty in the overall line-up. It’ll also mark a big step forward for connectivity, Ford promises. The all-electric Transit will use Ford Telematics and an embedded FordPass Connect 4G LTE modem. That will support in-vehicle hotspot use for up to 10 WiFi devices, but also allow for more precise fleet management. With the right software, companies will be able to track the van via GPS, add geofencing rules, and remotely monitor vehicle diagnostics."   And Digital Trends points out: "The electric Ford Transit will go on sale in the United States for the 2022 model year, meaning it will likely arrive in showrooms before the end of 2021. Pricing information hasn’t been announced yet. For context, the gasoline-burning Transit carries a base price of $34,510. Production will take place in the United States"   https://jalopnik.com/the-u-s-built-electric-ford-transit-will-change-the-va-1842100761   https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/03/ford-readies-an-all-electric-transit-van-for-us-sales-starting-2022/   https://www.slashgear.com/ford-transit-ev-will-bring-an-all-electric-van-to-us-and-canada-04612105/   https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/electric-ford-transit-delivery-van-announced-for-2022-debut   NORWAY: 5,145 ALL-ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN FEBRUARY "5,145 new zero-emission cars were registered in Norway in February just past. The market share of purely electric cars in new passenger car registrations was thus 49.7 per cent. In total, including HEV and PHEV, 79.2 per cent of all newly registered cars in Norway had either an electric or hybrid drive. The Audi e-tron was the most popular model across all drive types." reports electrive: "Compared to the same month last year, this marks an increase in all-electric registrations of 13.9 per cent. While Norway still recorded declines in the last three months of 2019, things have started looking up again in the new year. With regard to the individual models, the Audi e-tron quattro again recorded the highest number of new registrations across all drive types. A total of 1,171 of this model were registered for the road in February. The VW e-Golf (755 new registrations) only followed in second place by a clear margin. The Nissan Leaf made it to third place with 484 new registrations."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/04/norway-5145-all-electric-cars-registered-in-february/   TESLA GETS GREEN LIGHT TO START PRODUCING NEW MODEL 3 LONG RANGE IN CHINA "Tesla has received the green light to start producing a new version of the Model 3 Long Range RWD in China." writes Fred for Electrek: "When announcing the production of the Model 3 in China, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the automaker would only produce the lower-end versions of the car in the country and the higher-end would still be produced in Fremont, California. As production started at the plant last year, Tesla was only producing the Model 3 Standard Range Plus RWD. However, we reported last month on Tesla seeking to make the Model 3 Long Range RWD, a version of the Model 3 that was discontinued in the US, at Gigafactory Shanghai in China. Now we’ve learned that Tesla received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to produce and sell the new version of the Model 3 in China (via Reuters)."   https://electrek.co/2020/03/06/tesla-greenlight-producing-model-3-long-range-china/   TESLA ADVERTISES FOR SOLAR, ENERGY STORAGE STAFF IN CHINA " Tesla has advertised for solar and energy storage project managers in China, as the U.S. electric vehicle maker moves to expand its energy business into the country." reports Autoblog: "The two posts on the Tesla human resources department's official WeChat account mark the first time the California-based automaker has looked to hire for such roles in China. One post says Tesla is seeking project managers to design and execute solar projects for commercial or residential customers, while a second seeks managers to develop photovoltaic energy storage projects. The roles are advertised as based at its $2 billion factory in Shanghai"   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/06/tesla-china-solar-energy-storage-hiring/   ELECTRIC CARS ARE ONLY FOR ‘GREEN ADDICTS’ SAYS PEUGEOT BOSS "Electric cars are only bought by “green addicts” and aren’t attractive enough to regular buyers, according to the chairman of France’s largest carmaker." says driven.co.nz: "Carlos Tavares, head of the PSA Group responsible for Peugeot, Citroen and DS, says electric vehicles still lack mainstream appeal. Speaking to reporters from a number of outlets including Reuters following the cancelled Geneva motor show, Tavares said manufacturers must work on making electric cars affordable. Tavares’ views clash with the heads of major manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, which are investing heavily in electric technology. Ola Källenius, Daimler chair and boss of Mercedes-Benz cars, says his company will double production of plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2020 and push to expand its “EQ” family of electric cars. But Tavares isn’t alone. BMW board member Klaus Frölich told reporters in June 2019 that the shift to electrification is overhyped, and that a government push for electric cars outstripped consumer demand."   https://www.driven.co.nz/news/news/electric-cars-are-only-for-green-addicts-says-peugeot-boss/   A HYBRID PORSCHE 911 SOUNDS LIKE A PACKAGING NIGHTMARE "Porsche is still developing a hybrid 911, it just sounds like a lot of hard work. Porsche wants to keep the same bodystyle of the current car, keep the rear seats, keep the engine location, etc., and all of that proves difficult when you have to fit batteries and motor in there somewhere." according to Jalopnik: "Auto Express interviewed Michael Steiner, who sits on the board for Porsche".   The platform is hybrid ready, and we have prototypes. I drive it myself; it’s fun to drive,” Dr. Michael Steiner, Porsche’s board member for R&D told us. “One thing that should be decided on is whether it is more performance-oriented hybrid or range-orientated plug-in hybrid. This is one of the main decisions we have to take - deciding which direction such a variant of the 911 should take. It’s also once again to do with weight. The more range you would like, the more weight you have to add, but if you are only looking for performance you could have a really small battery that boosts the car and regenerates under braking,” Steiner added.”   https://jalopnik.com/a-hybrid-porsche-911-sounds-like-a-packaging-nightmare-1842127164   SOLAREDGE LAUNCHES SMART EV CHARGER Following the launch of the first-of-its-kind, award-winning EV charging solar inverter, SolarEdge is now expanding its EV charging offering with the launch of its Smart EV Charger in North America. Increasing installation flexibility, the new level 2 EV charger (Maximum 9.6kW 40A@ 240Vac) supports installation either as a stand-alone unit or coupled with a SolarEdge PV system. When connected to a SolarEdge inverter with HD-Wave technology, the Smart EV Charger enables EV charging with excess solar energy in order to reduce charging costs and carbon footprints. The combined solution will offer charging solely from solar and in the future also support up to X7 faster charging by simultaneously (assuming 40A@240VAC vs 12A@120VAC) using grid and solar energy through its solar boost mode."   THE NETHERLANDS GOES FOR EV PURCHASE SUBSIDIES "The Dutch government has now confirmed the rumours of a planned purchase subsidies for privately used e-cars from July and has provided further details. Hybrid cars and vehicles above a list price of 45,000 euros will not be considered. However, electric used cars will be considered." according to Electrive: "Those wanting to purchase an electric vehicle in the Netherlands will now be beckoned by a subsidy of 4,000 euros for the purchase of new electric cars with a list price of between 12,00 0 and 45,000 euros and a minimum range of 120 kilometres. The new subsidy rates include a bonus of 2,000 euros for used electric cars."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/05/the-netherlands-goes-for-ev-purchase-subsidies/     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why.   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.

Show #457   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 28th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   And thank you to another Patreon supporter who has moved up from Producer to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER LEO   And thank you to Sascha Pallenberg who was my original PARTNER of the show and supported me for over 6 months, and came to the end of his support (for now!).   INCOMING DAIMLER CEO WEIGHS BILLIONS IN COST CUTS "As Daimler's incoming CEO, Ola Källenius will soon be making decisions on where to take an ax to costs as the automaker adjusts to the headwinds of trade tensions, plateauing sales and a pricey electrification strategy. The new boss reportedly is looking for about $6.75 billion in cost savings and efficiency gains by 2021 at Mercedes-Benz car plants." reports Automotive News today. From Ola himself: “There's no two ways about it, the world is going toward zero-emission in the long term. For us, in the next five to 10 years, battery electric vehicles play an absolutely crucial role to go there. Our strategy toward electrification is based upon three pillars. Every single combustion engine that we will have will get a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Then, we will have plug-in hybrids in every segment. And we will have a full family of EQ battery electric vehicles. We don't have [full hybrid vehicles] in the planning right now. We believe that plug-in hybrid at this point is a better use for the customer because you can truly drive electric up to a certain distance. The cost structure of electric vehicles in this first generation or two are definitely higher than what we used to have on the combustion [engine] side. It's one of the main tasks as we scale and further develop the technology, primarily on the battery side, to drive that cost down. That will take many years. It is our goal to be a profitable business. The business case with the electric vehicles has to be profitable, as well."   https://www.autonews.com/executives/incoming-daimler-ceo-weighs-billions-cost-cuts   WATCH TESLA ROADSTER RACE FERRARI FORMULA 1 CAR: SIMULATED VIDEO Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The next-generation Tesla Roadster will supposedly boast a range of some 621 miles or more, but it's not just its insane range that makes the electric supercar so impressive. In fact, some would argue that its range figure takes a back seat to its insane level of performance. When first revealed, Tesla released these specs on the new Roadster:   7,376 pound-feet of torque 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, making it the quickest production car in the world. 0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds Quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, which beats every other production car. 250+ mph top speed"   "Now those are truly some impressive stats, but is the new Roadster fast enough to outpace a Ferrari Formula One race car? In the real world, probably not (though the Roadster does have a slight 0-60 MPH edge over an F1 car, which typically hits 60 in 2.1 to 2.7 seconds), but in the world of flash/CGI, anything is possible."   https://insideevs.com/news/346945/video-tesla-roadster-race-ferrari-f1/   RICH (RE)BUILDS A TESLA GARAGE "Rich Benoit runs the popular YouTube channel, Rich Rebuilds, where he takes broken-down Teslas and brings them back to life, documenting his journey each step of the way. Now he and his business partner, a former parts manager at Tesla, are opening up a repair shop to help stem some of the demand for Tesla service. Tesla customers have often complained about having to wait weeks to get their cars serviced."   https://finance.yahoo.com/video/tesla-rebuild-rebel-leveraging-youtube-130005159.html   TESLA MODEL Y GOES ON DISPLAY "Tesla recently had a Model Y on display for employees to see outside of its seat factory at 901 Page Street in Fremont, California, roughly 3 miles from the company’s main factory. In photos posted by multiple Reddit users, it appears the same deep blue metallic Model Y driven on stage and used for test drives at the car’s unveiling event last month was available in the building’s parking lot for a closer look." writes Dacia for Teslarati: "The vehicle on display is outfitted with chrome-delete trim, a look that’s popular with the Tesla aftermarket community yet a standard factory offering for the Model Y. Additionally, the all-electric crossover is seen with Tesla Sport Wheels in the color black. Tesla offers Sport Wheels in silver as a $1,500 option in the Model 3 and Model Y online configurator."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-spotted-fremont-seat-factory/   BOATHOUSE CHARGES YOUR E-BOAT USING SOLAR/WIND "Lithuania’s VM Productions, who developed the VM800 and VM900 all-electric fishing trawlers (8m and 9m respectively), are now testing an electric boat house/garage that has integrated wind turbines and solar panels to charge the batteries of any electric boat or car." reports PlugBoats: "Sarunas Danilavicius, Export Manager at the company, told news agency BNS Lithuania that the boathouse will have 12 wind turbines. the wind turbines are vertical-axis and make up a sort of ‘second storey’ of the building surrounded by screening instead of solid walls. Solar panels sit on top of the roof of the whole structure."   https://plugboats.com/boathouse-charges-your-e-boat-using-solar-wind/   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R PREPS FOR NURBURGRING RECORD "Volkswagen has completed its first testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife with its Volkswagen I.D. R racer ahead of an official attempt to break the lap record for an electric car. As part of the extensive testing, Romain Dumas once again took the wheel to hone the battery-powered Volkswagen I.D. R on the tortuous 20.8km-long track." reports Motoring.com.au: "Already a four-time Nurburgring N24 winner, Dumas used his experience to adapt the Volkswagen I.D. R with a team of engineers to modify and evolve the former Pikes Peak winner to the bumpy, uneven surface of the former F1 track. To steal the lap record for a pure-electric car, the Volkswagen I.D. R racer must beat the 6 minutes and 45.90 seconds set by the NIO EP9 two years ago.>   https://www.motoring.com.au/volkswagen-i-d-r-preps-for-nurburgring-record-118190/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK Jon Brooks / Kents EVs The daftest thing I’ve ever heard regarding EV’s came from a small time legacy auto maker. They claimed their hybrids are self charging! I mean, come on....what utter drivel :0)   RAJEEV NARAYAN One of the saddest and potentially harmful misconceptions about EVs that I have seen is that their manufacturing and operational life cycle are more harmful to the environment than diesel or other ICE vehicles. This misconception has been given further life by flawed studies that incorrectly overestimate the lifetime mileage of ICE vehicles and underestimate mileage of EVs and completely discount battery recycling, and dropping cobalt concentrations, as well as ignoring the thousands of deaths per year attributable to NOX, and other particulates.  Moreover, the growth of electric ride sharing, over traditional car ownership by many, will increase the number of miles driven by vehicle, and further limiting environmental impact.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH Hi, Martyn. The craziest thing I've heard is that a husband told his wife that EVs are okay so long as she was prepared to deal with the nuclear radiation from the batteries in the floor!
