“I start with the emotion. I don't know what the story is. I don't know who the characters are necessarily. I'm working on very little like, I'm thinking, ‘oh, well, the way this light looks through a window', or something — very few details here and there. But I don't know what happens in this story.” Join three amazing authors talking about their three fabulous fall reads: If I Survive You by Jonathan Escoffery, The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li and Bliss Montage by Ling Ma. The authors speak with Poured Over's host, Miwa Messer, about the balance between humor and dread, how they start a project, some of their favorite writers & more. Welcome to the April Bookish Series with the freakin perfect amazing goddess Briana Soler, AKA @bribeatris. Her aesthetic; you're wandering a new city after finding a surprisingly amazing coffee shop during your stroll. There's homie knick-knack shops, artists and street performers playing jazz. You then stumble across this bookstore. The sign is tastefully worn. The window has curated book piles with a casual mess, yet flowers in delicate vases and lamps add an elegant laissez faire. You walk in. It's warm. It smells of leather, denim and black tea leaves. Vintage furniture provides comfort to the space. Tall, dark wood shelves are lined with used, new, favorites and donations. Some books are even tucked into thrifted cabinets with golden knobs. There's color, there's language. It feels like home. It feels like you want to sit here and get to know this place. I don't know why I haven't done this BEFORE. But truly, this is the only way I can describe her aesthetic. This episode really plucked my heart strings on my Soul guitar. We discuss imposter syndrome as a reader, a creator and a writer. We discuss how fictional tales allow us to find our own. We discuss mood reading and how we read, which our weird reader nuances. We discuss how books have created connections far beyond our definition of joy, in the best way. I can't wait for you to get cozy and giggle with us. This week, Trevor and Paul have a little fun with assigned reading. Yes, you heard that right! First they chat a bit about their histories with assigned reading, both in school and in reading groups, before diving into a couple of short stories they assigned each other. The second half of the episode is a deep dive into two stunning stories: "A Manual for Cleaning Women" by Lucia Berlin and "The Ice Wagon Going Down the Street" by Mavis Gallant. If you want to read along before listening, you can find links to the full text of both stories in the show notes. You won't regret it! We ease our way back into breakfast book chat after our summer intermission with an episode on what we read ourselves during the summer. Enda chooses Lucia Berlin's A Manual for Cleaning Women, while Peter selects Deer on the High Hills: Selected Poems by Iain Crichton Smith, edited by John Greening. We also give a shout out to this weekend's Fingal Poetry Festival and to forthcoming and recently published books such as Hugo Hamilton's The Pagesand Colm Tóibín's The Magician. No Toaster Challenge this morning as we're getting the toaster fixed, but it will be back in operation next week. Christmas Day, I lost my dear Granny. The woman who taught me to sew, who showed me incredible kindness , and who showered me with unconditional love and acceptance. I've been reflecting on our special bond, but also how important the women in my life are to me. Women not only rule the world. but influence and watch over mine. This episode is a testament to the women who inspire us, guide us, and teach us. I interview my friend/songwriter/singer Rebecca Rego. She has released a new album inspired by her connection to a book of short stories by the writer Lucia Berlin, specifically her collection of works titled " A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories" Rebecca plays live for us her song titled "Mama," from her new album " Songs for Cleaning Women," and it's not to be missed. If you would like to follow Rebecca Rego, you can follow her Instagram , her website, or find her on Spotify, or Apple. Tom and Holly again welcome the special guest Mary to the mic. Mary is a friend of the Pod and an avid/professional reader. She suggested the 2019 movie JOJO Rabbit directed by Taika Waititi. We discuss the comedy of the movie and how it creates a complex look at Nazi’s during this time period. The role of Imaginary Hitler sparks our interest, and we agree that Yorki is the best character ever. After we debate the dynamics of Nazi’s in the movie, we end on everyone’s favorite segment, reviewing a review in The Review Review. The review fairs well as it gets many triangles from us (no, you’re not supposed to know what that means yet).Sorry for the delayed release schedule as Corona is throwing a hefty wrench into things. Tom and Holly welcome the incredibly special guest Mary to the Poet’s round table. Mary is a friend of the Pod and an avid/professional reader. The discussion of the story “Beautiful Monsters” by Eric Puchner begins with us talking about the strong prose of the piece and the odd relationships of the characters. We then dive into a discussion of nature vs. nurture, and the strange dynamics of the older man and woman’s relationship. Our discussion takes turns into the realms of psychology, sexuality, and science. We then pose an important question regarding the story and its resonance. You can read the piece in The Best America Short Stories 2012 by Heidi Pitlor and Tom Perrotta. Tom and Holly headline the ninth episode of APS where we discuss Roma directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Tom and Holly butt heads when it comes to how enjoyable they found this movie. After that fistfight, they dive into some of the movie’s core themes such as guilt, despair, work, and toxic masculinity. Holly drops some knowledge on the creation of the movie, and how it differs from most movies one normally watches. We end with everyone’s favorite segment, reviewing a review in The Review Review. It’s a good one.Come back in two weeks to hear us discuss the wonderfully imaginative short story “Beautiful Monsters” by Eric Puchner.Shout out to Mayo Nice for the intro music.Find us on Twitter @Alive_Poets and Instagram @TheAlivePoetsSociety to read and watch along with us. Tom and Holly host the eighth installment of Alive Poets Society, an episode where we discuss the short story “A Manual For Cleaning Women” by Lucia Berlin. Unfortunately, the story was not a fan favorite. Tom and Holly begin with a couple of things they liked about the piece, but the conversation quickly dives into the many shortcomings of the piece. Between the writing style, characterization, and theme, Tom and Holly are not impressed. You can read the piece (and come up with your own opinions about it) here: http://www.shortstoryproject.com/story/a-manual-for-cleaning-women/ just make sure your opinions agree with ours… or else (that’s the correct use of ellipses (you’ll get that joke after listening)).Come back in two weeks to hear us dissect the award-winning film Roma which is now stream-able on Netflix.Shout out to Mayo Nice for the intro music.Find us on Twitter @Alive_Poets and Instagram @TheAlivePoetsSociety to get the scoop on what we are reading/watching for next episode. "I'm just not gonna tell Gail," he said of his editor when he took the first assignment from Vanity Fair--but there was something going on with the Parkland students that grabbed him, and he--with the help of his agent, Betsy Lerner--grabbed it. Oscar winning star Cate Blanchett invites Mariella to her home in the South Downs to peruse her bookshelves. After being greeted at the door by Doug the Pug, the pair settle down to discuss Cate’s most loved books, discovering the role they’ve played throughout her life – whether as part of her Australian childhood or influencing her performances on stage and screen. In her picture book choice you’ll meet the Bunyip – a mythological creature whose story she loved so much she now reads it to her children. Then there’s the Russian magic realist classic that she found super sexy, and the brutal love story she sees as an ode to her homeland. Mariella and Cate find reoccurring themes; from gender politics to sexual harassment, cruelty within love, romance and the evolution of feminism. The pair move on to discuss the #MeToo movement, how to manage success as a woman and the perils of social media when it comes to sexual abuse claims.
