On today's episode I chat with Dr. Dan Siegel, renowned author and founder of Interpersonal Neurobiology, and my friend, Joan Ryan, Enneagram expert and educator. We explore the intersection of the Enneagram, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Dan's Patterns of Developmental Pathways (PDP) model. Our conversation dives into the science behind personality, the pathways that shape our inner worlds, and the ongoing journey toward integration and wholeness. Dan explains how his PDP model offers a scientific lens to understand personality dynamics, while the Enneagram and IFS provide tools for personal exploration and healing. They discuss how personality acts as a filter. Key Takeaways: Personality is a dynamic filter shaped by temperament, experience, and protective strategies. The PDP model identifies three core motivational vectors: agency, bonding, and certainty. How do the Enneagram and IFS complement each other in helping us explore and integrate our inner worlds? Protectors and exiles align with motivational pathways, and how integration allows us to move from survival strategies to thriving. Integration invites us to shift from limiting patterns into greater freedom and possibility. Wholeness is not about escaping personality but embracing all parts of who we are. "Your home base is wholeness. But personality is kind of just a filter that keeps you at times from experiencing that wholeness." – Dr. Dan Siegel Episode sponsor: Sentur About the Guests: Dr. Dan Siegel is the Founder and Director of Education of the Mindsight Institute and founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, where he was also Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Culture, Brain and Development and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine. "What a joy to read Stan Bunger's book. Bunger captures a complex John Madden who is, of course, hilarious, but also poignant and introspective. For 18 years at 8:15 a.m. on KCBS, Bunger was the perfect straight man teeing up Madden. You can hear Madden on the pages of "Mornings with Madden,'' unspooling one engaging tale after another. He was a truly gifted storyteller. And so, as I've learned, is Stan Bunger. I challenge anyone who picks up this book to stop turning the pages."An intimate and freewheeling portrait of John Madden through the NFL legend's own words" - Joan Ryan, author of "Intangibles: Unlocking the Science and Soul of Team Chemistry" John Madden is synonymous with football. He was the television face and voice of the nation's most popular sport, the namesake of its best-selling sports video game, and the man with the highest career winning percentage of any NFL coach. Despite his international fame, there was a side of Madden known only to those who listened to morning radio broadcasts in the San Francisco Bay Area. That's where Madden grew up, lived, and died. It's where for decades he found joy in a daily chat with his hometown radio station: a chance to unwind, tell stories, and impart his own brand of wit and wisdom. In Mornings With Madden, Stan Bunger-the man most often on the other side of the mic-illuminates this larger-than-life figure, drawing upon memories of more than fifteen years of daily broadcasts, backed up by thousands of recordings of those conversations. Readers who adored Madden's football acumen and quirky personality on NFL broadcasts will get to know the father, husband, bad golfer, dog owner, lover of roadside diners, and philosopher whose personality dominated our radio chats. Featuring moving reflections alongside Madden's own words, this is a treasure trove of wry observations, self-deprecating humor, clear-eyed thinking about sports and society, and the "Maddenisms" that endeared the legendary coach to millions.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Are you familiar with the Enneagram? The "test" that views personality as nine interconnected types? I wasn't, until about three years ago. And even then, I took an online test, bought a book, read the chapter that corresponded with my "type," and never looked at it again. But.... I've had parts in the background of my mind who have been curious about it. And every time I see one of Tammy Sollenbergers' posts about the Enneagram or a new group that she's starting to help you incorporate the Enneagram and IFS I think, "I need to look at that again." So I decided to reach out to Tammy and ask her to come on to the podcast to talk about it. And thankfully, she agreed! Tammy Sollenberger is an IFS therapist and the host of the One Inside Podcast. She's also the author of The One Inside: Thirty Days to Your Authentic Self. And she co-leads a course with Joan Ryan, an Enneagram expert, on using IFS and the Enneagram to "observe your patterns, unblend from parts, and make new choices." In this week's podcast Tammy and I talk about the Enneagram and how well it integrates with IFS. Both models can help you to know yourself at a much deeper level, but using them together can add even more awareness and understanding. And, at least for me, knowing that there are aspects of my personality that are hard-wired to see the world in a certain way, at least to some degree, helps my parts to be much less critical of how I think and what I do. In this episode, Tammy talks about how each part has a "focus of attention," meaning a certain thing that really matters the most to them, and she goes through each type and explains that focus. She also explains how our parts will respond differently to things based on our Enneagram type. Like you and I could have the exact same experience, but if our types are different, our parts will react differently. AND, we get into a discussion about how the Enneagram can help you understand your relationship with food. Tammy was able to speak to this but also connected me with Joan Ryan, an Enneagram expert, who'll be coming onto the podcast to take a much deeper dive into this. It's all pretty fascinating, if you ask me. And I think the combination of IFS and the Enneagram can lead to much deeper self-understanding, and ultimately a deeper level of healing. Sign me up! On today's episode, Joan Ryan and I talk about New Years resolutions that may be generated by the Parts of us found in our Enneagram Type. Award-winning female sports columnist and author Joan Ryan writes about team chemistry in sports and whether it leads to winning.
In these times of danger in the Middle East, even on one's own doorstep, it was both heartening and morale boosting for everyone who attended a Parliamentary reception at the Houses of Parliament. Led by Elnet UK with United Hatzalah of Israel and World Jewish Relief, we learned of support on the ground for victims in the Ukraine and Israel. Meant to mark the 600th day since the war in Ukraine started, the Hamas terror attacks meant the focus was shifted - though we were urged not to forget the terrible war in Europe. In both conflicts, we were reminded of the “sickening suffering” inflicted on innocent civilians. And not just of concern to Israel, instead a war for the future of humanity between good and evil. Shocking testimonies don't seem to get easier to hear. We heard Noam Sagi's testimony about his mother's kidnap from her kibbutz Nir Oz home. He gave a news conference to the London-based media. It's coming up. I hosted the panel discussion with Assaf Admoni of United Hatzalah, Marta Kubica, chief executive of Elnet (Central and Eastern Europe), and Beth Saffer, head of older peoples' programmes at World Jewish Relief. We'll also heard from Minister for Immigration, Robert Jenrick MP, Wayne David MP, Shadow with responsibility for the Middle East and North Africa and Lord Stuart Polack. But first to introduce the whole evening, Joan Ryan, CEO of Elnet UK. This episode is brought to you with Elnet UK, dedicated to strengthening relations between the UK, Europe and Israel based on shared democratic values and strategic interests.
Joan Ryan and Andrea Watson speak with Rabbi Neil of Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Fe, New Mexico on poems written about "hidden Jews" in New Mexico.
Our two guests today make their first appearances on the “podcast of record”, and you might say after 120 plus episodes of Jonny Gould's Jewish State, they've been a rather glaring omission. The Right Honourable, Lord Eric Pickles and the Right Honourable, Joan Ryan are in conversation. We focus on the future of Holocaust remembrance, including a serious attempt to get to the bottom of what actually went on in the only concentration camp built on British soil by Hitler, at Alderney in the Channel Islands. We also discuss the UK government bill to quell the racist endeavours of BDS. The Anglo-Jewish community owes a debt to those in our political class who stood up to the growing scourge of antisemitism which followed Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party. And typically, proof that the “oldest hatred” stands above party politics is the cooperation, even camaraderie, which exists right across party lines. Joan's Labour, Eric's Tory. Once again, I handover the interview microphone for a deeper conversation between these two comrades. The Rt Hon. Joan Ryan in conversation with Lord Eric Pickles is brought to you with Elnet UK, dedicated to strengthening relations between the UK, Europe and Israel based on shared democratic values and strategic interests.

Episode Notes On this episode, I'm joined by author and professional skater Karina Manta. With her ice dance partner Joe Johnson, Karina competed internationally for the US. Karina and Joe made history as the first team where both partners were out as LGBTQ, and Karina was also the first woman skater to come out while competing - it took until 2018 to break that barrier, which is just mindblowing! Karina's memoir is called "On Top of Glass, My Stories as a Queer Girl in Figure Skating." She's a beautiful writer and I highly recommend the book! Since retiring from competition in 2019, Karina has also toured with Cirque de Soleil and won the British reality show Dancing on Ice. As Jeremy Corbyn rose to power in Britain's Labour Party, the party grew increasingly antisemitic, isolating both Jews and those allies. Those allies include Rt. Hon Joan Ryan, a longtime member of Labour Friends of Israel who grew increasingly disillusioned at her party's turn towards Jew hatred. When she finally left the party, she cited antisemitism as the sole reason for her resignation. Host Steven Shalowitz sits down with Ryan to discuss how she got involved in British politics, why she is such a strong supporter of the Jewish community, and why she doesn't regret speaking out against antisemitism despite the backlash against her.

Today I hope to land one BIG idea. Like most big ideas, they begin with a question: What is humility? Last month I posted a question on Twitter that asked "what is team chemisty?" That question led to a solo podcast, which led to me meeting author Joan Ryan. She literally wrote the book on team chemistry. Our podcast conversation will be available later this month. If today's episode furthers the conversation on humility, we will all be 1% better. Joan Ryan has done years of extensive research into team chemistry to try to understand whether it actually exists. Having been around the World Series-winning San Francisco Giants team, Joan felt that despite the analytic movement suggesting otherwise, team chemistry just had to be a thing. In her most recent book, Intangibles, she explores her findings. You can buy Joan's book here. Where Others Won't is recorded in Toronto, Canada, and was created by Cody Royle and Adam Esker.
