Each of these questions were sourced by one of the inspirational people Marc profiled in the book. For example: “Who am I optimizing to become?” – James Clear “What world do I want to create?” – J.R.R. Tolkien “What expectations am I holding in my relationships?” – Melissa Ambrosini “How do I become irreplaceable?” – Coco Chanel “What is within my control?” - Ryan Holiday Marc became a true believer in the life-changing magic of asking empowering questions when he found himself stuck in a depression after deleting an app – and his entire business – from the Apple app store…which touched the lives of 86 million people, but couldn't find a sustainable business model…leaving him without a business, a loss of a identity and a lot of financial liabilities and a young family. And it was one question that took him from hopelessness to hope, which is where we begin this podcast.

Are you someone who's scared to stand up in a crowd and ask questions thinking you might have a silly question? A lot of people hesitate to ask questions, especially because they think that maybe a bull's eye target will be on their back, or they will look silly or dumb. But just when you think you have to pressure yourself into asking the best questions, the irony of it is that not overthinking what to ask and just being present will help you yield the best questions.  The best questions will always surface at the right time. You just have to constantly train your mind to do that and opportunities will show up. And this idea of mental fitness will be explained by today's guest, Marc Champagne, bestselling author and fellow podcast host. Marc shares with us some best practices that luminaries have leveraged in becoming amazing human beings who are extremely efficient and successful in their lives.  After four years of interviewing wildly successful humans, Marc noticed this pattern: all of them were asking really high-powered and valuable questions. They would ask a big question, then they'd ask more questions to unpack more clarity around whatever they're working on. This is essentially the Socratic method – to get clear, ask questions to then shift your action or ensure that your mind is thinking with intention, then stuff happens and opportunity shows up. (And it doesn't have to be the traditional academic setting where you're getting grilled.) Share this episode with someone who appreciates the power of asking the right questions but is afraid to ask, and hopefully, the tips they will learn today will give them the courage to ask powerful questions. Marc Champagne's Biography Marc Champagne unpacks the mental fitness practices and reflective questions shaping the lives of some of the most successful and brilliant thinkers in the world. He is the author of Personal Socrates, a best-selling book exploring the pointed questions that stimulate our mental fitness and teach us how to direct our internal narrative to work for us instead of against us. Marc studies the prompts and practices of legends such as Kobe Bryant, Maya Angelou, Robin Williams, James Clear, Coco Chanel, Stephen Hawking, and many others to bring clarity, intentionality, and possibility to every aspect of your life. He is the host of the top 50 ranked podcast Behind The Human and co-founded the journaling app (KYO) which reached 86.9 million people without any paid advertising. He has studied mental fitness practices for over a decade and consults with Fortune 500 companies as a mental fitness strategist and speaker. Highlights Curiosity: You have to be deliberate when asking questions. How can you leverage your critical thinking skills to ask the best questions so you can get better answers? Courage: Although Marc has already been published and has achieved massive success, for him to acknowledge that he still struggles with self-doubt takes a ton of courage. It takes courage to experience and feel that doubt, and do it anyway. Creativity: Clarity plus intentionality leads to an expansion of opportunity. Be creative with these opportunities by taking that next step. Figure out for yourself if it aligns with your future self and how you would like to live out your life. Mental Fitness: Try to keep your mind as clear as possible and constantly train your mind to do that. Then you will see, feel and hear the question in your head naturally. Presence: Identify how you want to be there and how you want to show up in a meeting. Also, identify how you want other people on the other side to feel. Set those intentions and then magical things start to happen. Self-Doubt: You have to constantly remind yourself of your goals in overcoming self-doubt. Goals: Understand where you are right now and who you're striving to become. Then focus comes in along with intentional habits to support the person you're striving to become. Check-in: It just takes microseconds to check in with yourself whether you're doing something that doesn't make sense and how you can course-correct. Pause: Allow the luxury of the pause to happen, ask yourself good questions, and then you can make that shift. Pivot: It's not realistic to make big shifts. The key is to take small steps and improve as you go along. Start small. Write down five activities or things that will put a smile on your face.  Clarity: Ask yourself these three questions" What went well, today? What would I have changed today? And what can I celebrate about today? There's so much that we take for granted that so many places in the world have zero access to. Action: Take the time to apply whatever you're reading into your life. If you don't learn to reflect, then it just becomes knowledge added to the library of your mind. Reading: You don't read a book from start to finish. Shifting your mindset on needing to read the chapter in that book because you're working on it right now will accelerate your learning. Perspective: When you're in that state of survival mode, you're not thinking at your best and it doesn't feel good either. By shifting your perspective through really good questions puts you in a more creative state. Gratitude: If you're in a state where you're feeling really overwhelmed or not feeling great, take a moment to ask yourself who haven't you thanked lately? Within seconds, you've shifted out of that looping narrative and leveraged a gratitude practice to put you in a positive state of mind.  Shift: We're one question away from a completely different life or outcome. One question can completely change your mood. Insight: There are always elements in situations where we're pretending we don't know a small piece. And it's usually that piece we're putting in the back corner that we need to deal with. Core: We make a lot of decisions and do a lot of thinking based on surface level answers. And so, always ask the next question and don't settle with the first answers that come up. Emotional Optimism: Living in The Silver Lining Podcast

Here's a confession: I don't journal. In fact, I've been afraid to journal and write things down. I know I am an emotionally brave person - I talk through my processes, share with friends, have deep thoughts.....that's why I'm not quite sure where such resistance comes from. One thing that actually prevents me from journaling is my handwriting. Another reason is that I've been afraid to ask myself certain questions because probably I'm not ready to see what might come out on the page. During my conversation with Marc Champagne back in Episode 54, he left me with three prompts to start this process. Marc recently wrote a book called Personal Socrates where he talked about the power of journaling – and it's really about asking yourself questions. And so today, I want to hold myself accountable to, at least, try to journal this week. I'm going to give this a shot and I'm going to write it down in a notebook. We all have our little coach sitting on our shoulder at any moment's notice, no matter what's happening in life, and even more excitingly, where we're at in life. To really properly hold space for another human you have to first hold space for yourself.Set ground rules that allow for you to open up a little bit more, be a little bit more vulnerable, and not feel so terrifying in the process. "The biggest thing that I've learned is that we're all one question away from a completely different life." —  Marc Champagne About Marc Champagne:Marc Champagne + Writer & Mental Fitness PractitionerMarc Champagne unpacks the mental fitness practices and reflective questions shaping the lives of some of the most successful and brilliant thinkers in the world. Welcome to the Aww Shift Podcast. In this episode, our guest is Mark Champagne. He is a Mental Fitness Practitioner who is obsessed with questions. He co-founded the journaling app (KYO) powered by prompts, which reached over 86 million people in under two years. Mark is also an author and host of the Behind the Human podcast, Top 50 in the Health category. Having studied people's minds like Kobe Bryant, Maya Angelou, Naveen Jain, and more, he decided to write a book profiling exceptional thinkers' questions and mental fitness practices. Today, he will share his insights about Questions and how having them daily can change our lives.   [8:16] Why should we listen to you? I would probably flip it around and start asking you questions by nature. What lights me up are questions and being curious about people's journeys and whatnot. I spent the last decade studying powerful questions and the mental fitness practices of people. I've done everything possible to figure out how to take that information and their story or their knowledge and flip it into questions so we can implement that in our life. That's probably what I would talk about. But I'd first start asking questions about what lights you up or what makes you smile each day.   [9:36] How did you get into the work that you do? I was in the corporate world doing my thing and was quite happy working in brand management and product management in the healthcare space. But what I was doing in that job was reading, learning, and getting into these mental fitness practices. I started picking up these practices, specifically around reflection and journaling. [11:03]  When I left the corporate world, I was journaling every morning. But I was getting frustrated with the available digital tools, and I decided to leave that job and start the app. It did really in the sense of the number of people we reached at 6.9 million App Store impressions in the first couple of years. I became obsessed with questions when we reached that amount of people. [12:55] I just deleted this app, this business, and my identity for the last three years because it financially failed. It wasn't until I asked what I wanted for my life that the motivation started to come back because that question led to the next. That's why I'm passionate about questions. I think we're all of us. No matter what we're doing, we're all one question away from a completely different life. What lights me up is trying to help people, not give them questions because we're all unique and different, but help people with the mental fitness practices and framework to find that question that they need right now in their lives.   [14:59] How is it that asking questions led to where you are now? I think the reason I like questions is that it offers us the pause that most of us don't take because we're on autopilot, and we're just running our day every day. A good question allows us to pause. [16:55] Cal Fussman would never start a story or start writing a story with a blank mind. He would fire up his computer. If he didn't have something, to begin with, he would write down the question and say, “What do I want to say?” And he'd go to bed. The first thing he would do when he would wake up is answer that question. It's just another way to use questions. And to tap into that intuitive sense. We have the answers, and we need to pull it out of the fog that's surrounding our minds with thoughts and relationships. [19:08] Questions and Negotiations Some of the questions I ask myself are what am I negotiating with myself constantly consistently. If that comes up, then you can use some practices or some mental fitness. One of the examples I use in that one is Mel Robbins' 5 Second Rule. That's a great way to get up out of bed. It's just 54321 and out, just no negotiation. Just get out and start your day. [20:39]  For me, questions provide that pause. And they're just millions of different options or variations of these prompts. But what I've noticed is that it doesn't matter who you are. We're all asking questions. And they're either good ones, or they're not so good one. My whole thing is finding that question that is well-timed because it needs to be well-timed. And that resonates with someone and provides that pause for you to make a decision. [21:31] Why did you write your book? This is my life, and this is what I've been doing. For the last decade now, it showed up in some capacity in an app format that ended up reaching a lot of people. Now, the format has morphed, and I took those learnings from the app, and now it's in book format. But the principles and the idea behind it is are very similar.   [22:24] The Socratic Method I knew of Socrates. But that's kind of as far as my knowledge. When I dug into it, I noticed that this whole method of asking questions, clarifying questions, and question after question, has been around for hundreds of years, if not more. So it's proven to work. But I noticed that it's always discussed in an academic setting. [23:24] The idea with what I wanted to do with the book was I know the power of questions. We can leverage many different mental fitness practices to deploy these questions into your routines and rituals. But how do we use the backbone of the Socratic method and update that and modernize it? So it's easy to think about that. And that's what the book is. It's broken down into three parts instead of the six big Socratic method questions. [24:11] Part one is all about questions to help seek clarity. The second part dives into living intentionally. So questions to help you focus on and borrow some of the stuff from the book from Ryan Holiday and stoicism. And then the third step is unlocking exponential opportunity. Because now when you can see and you're doing the things aligned to your work and your life and whatnot, then all of a sudden you start seeing an opportunity, and stuff starts to happen. [26:58] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? To show up daily with a smile. Be happy and try to leave that to other people on the other side, whether listening or in conversation. That's what lights me up.   Key Quotes: [13:26 – 13:31] “All of us, no matter what we're doing, we're all one question away from a completely different life.” [17:22 – 17:30] “We have the answers. We need to pull it out of the fog that's typically also surrounding our mind with thoughts and relationships.” [20:00 – 20:06] “It's harder to not do anything than it is to do it because then I got to live with the fact that I'm now out of line with who I chose and said I was going to be.” [25:28 – 25:40] “See if you resonate with the person or the question and just follow your intuition because that's the question that will resonate with you most in terms of what you need right now in your life.” Learn more about Mark Champagne on: https://bio.site/qtiGsn Website: https://www.behindthehuman.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marc-champagne-14767b17/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/marcchampagne Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/behindthehuman

Marc Champagne is a mental fitness strategist and host of Behind The Human Podcast. Marc previously worked in medical sales. He loves to connect with another person, especially in sales when it doesn't feel like sales. It's just two people having a conversation and there's no hidden agenda. With all the rejection and the struggle that come with sales, that's when the idea of mental fitness came up for him. From medical sales, Marc leaped into the mental wellness space, creating an app, which is a combination of daily reflections and a gratitude journal. Out of that experience came his book, Personal Socrates: Questions That Will Upgrade Your Life from Legends & World-Class Performers – the vehicle has changed but the path and the work remain the same. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: When his mental fitness journey started The power of journaling The pivotal moment for Marc entering the mental wellness space Staying out of your autopilot Connecting the unknown to the opportunity The experience of deleting his app business and writing his book Episode Highlights: The Road to Mental Fitness When you're able to shift your mindset into gratitude or something positive in your life, you become more aware and awake regardless of whatever situation in life you're in. Instead of complaining about your life, default your day with a morning routine such as journaling. The Pivotal Moment If you're working towards a certain goal, you need to have a solid plan and strategy. Be excited for the unknown versus fearing the unknown. Marc's leap into the mental wellness space wasn't because he couldn't stand driving to work anymore, but more like he would regret not trying it. Connecting the Unknown to the Opportunity Do everything now as humanly possible to stay out of the autopilot. If your life has been structured and so planned out and you jump into a new world full of uncertainty, replace fear with excitement. Be excited for the unknown and connect the unknown to opportunity. The Idea Behind Personal Socrates The idea was to write a book of profiles that opens up the dialogue around mental fitness from all these different perspectives in different industries and different people. And then have the question be the lead-in to basically meet people wherever they're at in life. The first step is asking questions about getting clear. Step two includes questions to help us be more intentional with our activities, and habits, thoughts, or how we react. If you do the first two, the third one just happens naturally, which is the expansion of possibility. Ultimately, for you to hold space for others, you have to first hold space for yourself. A podcast host, a Mental Fitness Strategist and most recently an author, he is the ultimate lover of questions and going beyond surface level conversation - with other people, and with oneself. In this conversation, Marc and I discuss his huge transitions between hosting a top ranked podcast called Behind The Human and the co-creation of a journaling app which reached 86.9 million people and into his latest endeavour as an author.  Marc's love of questions has been deeply laced throughout his being as he's studied mental fitness practices over the last decade and into his work as strategist, podcast host, and speaker.  As Marc says, “We all ask questions - but are they the right ones, the best ones, and are we asking enough of them?”---LINKS:Marc's Website: https://www.behindthehuman.com/Marc on Instagram: @mchampagneBehind The Human: @behindthehumanWebsite: thesafehaven.coInstagram: @thesafehavenpodcastFrequency Podcast Network: The Safe HavenFacebook: The Safe HavenAll the good stuff: linktree/thesafehavenpodcastEmail: hello@thesafehaven.co
