From breaking bones to trudging through snow – it is a Foley artist's role to reproduce the everyday sound effects that are added to film, TV and games. By using a variety of unconventional props and their own bodies, the goal is to create an authentic soundscape that will enhance our auditory experience. If the Foley goes unnoticed then they've done their job well! Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to two award winning Foley artists and asks what it's like to spend so much time, quite literally stepping into someone else's shoes. Caoimhe Doyle has over 25 years' experience creating Foley sound effects and footsteps for film, television and video games. She's been nominated three times for the MPSE Golden Reel Award for her work on Colm Bairéad's An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. In 2011 she won a MPSE Golden Reel Award and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on Game of Thrones: Season 1 and is a current MPSE nominee for work on Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap. Caoimhe collaborates with an all-female team out of The Foley Lab in a quiet part of County Wicklow in Ireland.Marita Sbeih is a Lebanese Foley artist and one of only a handful working in the Middle East. Since 2018, she has been the dedicated Foley Artist at DB Studios in Beirut, which provides audio post-production for films, documentaries, and art productions from around the globe. Pursuing a career as a Foley artist in a country with many unique challenges has been far from easy, but Marita has built an impressive list of credits for Foley and footsteps in some of the Arab world's more distinguished art-house and indie productions, as well as international projects. Most recently, she worked on Hot Milk, a UK film directed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, which was selected for the official competition at the 75th Berlinale (2025).Produced by Hannah Dean (Image: (L) Caoimhe Doyle courtesy Caoimhe Doyle. V zgoščeni pripovedi spoznamo različno dinamiko družinskih odnosov in posameznih značajev, rojevanje in umiranje; v kratkem poletnem obdobju, prikazanem z zelo umirjenim tempom, Cáit doživi kar nekaj prelomnih situacij in spoznanj odraščanja.

Oíche mhór d'earnáil scannánaíochta na hÉireann a bhí ann aréir ag Gradaim Oscars na bliana 2023 agus 14 ainmniúchán ar an iomlán faighte ag aisteoirí agus ag scannáin. The award for Best Live-Action Short Film was awarded to the film 'An Irish Goodbye', and the film's directors, Tom Berkeley and Ross White, accepted the Award on stage last night, together with the main actors James Martin and Séamus O'Hara. Bronnadh gradam don Ghearrscannán Beo-Aicsin is Fearr ar an scannán 'An Irish Goodbye', agus ghlac stiúrthóirí an scannáin, Tom Berkeley agus Ross White, leis an nGradam ar an stáitse aréir, na príomhaisteoirí James Martin agus Séamus O'Hara ina dteannta. Also, the man from Dublin, Richard Baneham, brought the legs with him in the video makeup category for the second time for his work on the film 'Avatar: The Way of Water', and he started his speech in Irish. Chomh maith leis sin, thug fear Bhaile Átha Cliath, Richard Baneham, na cosa leis i gcatagóir na maisíochta físe don dara huair as a chuid oibre ar an scannán ‘Avatar: The Way of Water', agus tús curtha i nGaeilge aige lena óráid. Paul Mescal and Colin Farrell were among the nominations for the best actor, but the award was given to Brendan Fraser for his part in the film 'The Whale' and to Michelle Yeoh from the film 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'. Bhí Paul Mescal agus Colin Farrell i measc na n- ainmniúchán don aisteoir is fearr, ach bronnadh an gradam ar Brendan Fraser as an bpáirt a bhí aige sa scannán ‘The Whale' agus ar Michelle Yeoh ón scannán ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once'. Although Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan were nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, it was Ke Huy Quan who won the award, for his part in the film 'EverythingEverywhere All at Once'. Cé go raibh Brendan Gleeson agus Barry Keoghan ainmnithe don Aisteoir is Fearr i Ról Tacaíochta, ba é Ke Huy Quan a bhuaigh an gradam, as an bpáirt a bhí aige sa scannán ‘EverythingEverywhere All at Once'. In the Best International Feature Film category, 'All Quiet on the Western Front' got the best over 'The Quiet Girl'. I gcatagóir an Scannáin Lánfhada Idirnáisiúnta is Fearr, fuair ‘All Quiet on the Western Front' an ceann is fearr ar ‘An Cailín Ciúin'. After the ceremony, TG4's Commissioning Editor and Executive Producer of 'An Cailín Ciúin', Máire Ní Chonláin, said that the film had been an achievement and that TG4 was forever very proud of what the director, Colm Bairéad, had achieved. the producer, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, and everyone involved in the film. Hello, Best in Show listener Paul Mescal! It smells like Indie Spirit (and bourbon) in here! Weekend Watchlist's Slim joins Mia, Gemma, and Brian for an in-person debrief of all things Film Independent Spirit Awards. We were on the blue carpet, in the press room and inside the big tent on Santa Monica beach for all the wins. Slim reveals a fear of rollerbladers and spin classes on the sand, Mia meets her biggest fan (producer of the Filipino comedy Leonor Will Never Die), and everyone (and we mean everyone) gushes about Aftersun's lead. Gemma chats with Colm Bairéad, the writer-director of her much-loved The Quiet Girl, while Mia zooms with the movie's star, Catherine Clinch as we look at the Best International Feature Oscar category (where The Quiet Girl has made history as the first in the Irish language to be nominated). And after Slim and Mia had their first glimpse of a big award show, we spend the afterparty talking about our favorite movie scenes at award ceremonies, which takes a surprising turn into spoof flicks. "The Quiet Girl" had its world premiere at last year's Berlin International Film Festival and had a (no pun intended) quiet existence throughout the year until Ireland selected it as their entry for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. The film went on to receive the Oscar nomination for Ireland, the first for the country. Director/Writer Colm Bairéad was kind enough to talk with us about his feature directorial debut, which you can listen to below. The film will open in theaters in the U.S. nationwide on February 24th. Please take a listen down below and enjoy. Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an séú lá de mhí Lúnasa. Is mise Sibéal Dempsey. Bhí bean chéile Uachtarán na hÉireann, Sabina Higgins, páirteach i gconspóid an tseachtain seo mar thoradh ar litir a scríobh sí chuig an Irish Times maidir lena thráchtaireacht ar an gcogadh san Úcráin. Sa litir, atá bainte de shuíomh idirlín an Árais anois, scríobh Sabina go raibh díomá uirthi nár spreag an nuachtán aon idirbheartaíocht ar son sos cogaidh a d'fhéadfadh teacht ar shocrú síochána. Dúirt an Taoiseach nár shíl sé go raibh sé seo ar neamhréir le seasamh an rialtais, a bhí i gcónaí den tuairim go raibh an t-ionradh mídhleathach agus mímhorálta. D'eisigh oifigigh an Uachtaráin ráiteas freisin ag rá gur cháin sé an t-ionradh arís agus arís eile. D'fháiltigh ambasadóir na Rúise in Éirinn, Yuriy Filatov, roimh thuairimí Sabina, ag rá go raibh moladh Mrs Higgins ar neamhréir le seasamh na Rúise. Tá an scannán Gaeilge, An Cailín Ciúin, roghnaithe mar iontráil Oscars na hÉireann don Phríomhscannán Idirnáisiúnta is Fearr. Bunaithe ar an úrscéal ‘Foster' le Claire Keegan, tá an scannán suite sna hochtóidí agus leanann sé cailín óg darb ainm Cáit a chuirtear chun fanacht lena gaolta ar feadh samhraidh faoin tuath in Éirinn. Ba é an scannán, a stiúraigh Colm Bairéad, an chéad scannán i nGaeilge a léiríodh ag an bhféile scannán i mBeirlín agus tá iliomad gradam buaite aige cheana féin, lena n-áirítear gradaim Acadamh Scannán agus Teilifíse na hÉireann. Rinneadh é mar chuid de scéim dar teideal Cine4, tionscnamh léiriúcháin agus forbartha a chuireann maoiniú ar fáil do phríomhscannáin a dhéantar i nGaeilge. Roghnófar cúig scannán idirnáisiúnta déag anois agus nochtfar an gearrliosta deiridh de chúig cinn roimh an searmanas i mí Eanáir. Deireadh seachtaine suntasach a bhí ann do spórt na mban. Bhí ceithre chéad nócha a haon míle duine as breis agus caoga tír ag féachaint ar chluiche ceannais Pheil na mBan Dé Domhnaigh idir an Mhí agus Ciarraí. Fanann an Mhí mar Sheaimpíní na mBan d'Éirinn le scór deiridh de thrí a deich in aghaidh seachtar do Chiarraí. I Sasana, rinne ‘the Lionesses' ceiliúradh chomh maith agus iad ag buachan an choirn i gCraobhchomórtas na hEorpa 2022 den chéad uair i gcoinne na Gearmáine. Ba é seo an chéad bhua mór ag foireann Shasanach freisin ó bhuaigh na fir in 1966. Tá na himreoirí tar éis spreagadh a thabhairt d'iarrthóirí an Pháirtí Choimeádaigh ó shin a chinntiú gur féidir le “gach cailín óg” peil a imirt ar scoil. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Tá an script ar fáil i d'aip phodchraolta. * GLUAIS ar neamhréir le - inconsistent with idirbheartaíocht - negotiation príomhscannán - feature film iliomad - a great many scór deiridh - final score iarrthóirí - candidates
An Cailín Ciúin is an Irish Language film which is based on the short story ‘Foster' by Claire Keegan. The film which translates to the Quite Girl has been selected by the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) to represent Ireland at next year's Oscars. We'd like to take a moment to mark the sad passing of two members of the Film and TV Community who tragically passed away in the last couple of weeks. Donal Courtney, a wonderful actor, director and facilitator at the age of 52 and the marvel that was Michelle Forde, writer, producer and artist. Taken too soon after a brave battle with cancer at the young age of 38. Our deepest sympathies to all their loved ones. On the show this time around is write/director, Colm Bairèad. Director of the stunninf “An Cailín Ciúin." Still in cinemas and packing them in around the country. Go see it! Colm was born in Dublin and raised bilingually through Irish and English. Over the past fifteen years he has directed a number of multi-award-winning short films and many hours of documentary television for RTÉ, TG4 and TV3/Virgin Media. These include the four-part IFTA-nominated series The Joy (TV3), the award-winning feature-length drama documentary The Maamtrasna Murders (TG4), the IFTA award-winning docudrama Cumann na mBan – Women of the Revolution (TG4) and the IFTA-nominated documentary Frank O'Connor - Idir Dhá Shruth. Colm's 2013 fly-on-the-wall doc series An Ceoldráma (The Musical) was nominated for three IFTA Awards, including Best Director. In 2012, Colm received a distinction from the Screen Director's Guild of Ireland for his contribution to Irish-language film-making. Colm made his narrative feature debut with An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), an adaptation of Irish author Claire Keegan's celebrated story, Foster. The film premiered at the 72nd Berlinale where it won the Grand Prix of the International Jury of the Generation Kplus programme. It opened the 2022 Dublin International Film Festival, winning the Audience Award and the Dublin Film Critics' Circle Award for Best Irish Film. Colm also received an Aer Lingus Discovery Award during the festival. The film scooped 7 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an naoú lá déag de mhí Feabhra. Is mise Ella Hassett. Vótáil comhairleoirí Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe chun lána rothaíochta sealadach a chur ar ceal nuair a léirigh lucht gnó, áitritheoirí agus seirbhísí éigeandála na cathrach a n-imní faoi. I mí Mheán Fómhair 2021, mhol an comhairleoir Colette Connolly lána deighilte débhealaigh ar bhonn sealadach a chur ar thaobh an chósta de phromanáid Bhóthar na Trá i nGaillimh. Tháinig an vóta sin i ndiaidh beagnach ceithre uair a chloig díospóireachta. As na seacht gcomhairleoirí déag, ní raibh ach ceathrar díobh ar son an lána trí chíliméadar seo. Rinneadh comhairliúcháin phoiblí le déanaí, ina raibh seacht míle aighneacht, seasca faoin gcéad díobh sin i gcoinne an dhá bhealach a bhí leagtha amach. Beidh cruinniú speisialta ar siúl i mí an Mhárta chun an lána rothaíochta a phlé arís. Tá duais buaite ag fadscannán Gaeilge ag Féile Scannán Bheirlín. Bhuaigh an scannán dar teideal An Cailín Ciúin an Grand Prix sa rannóg Glúin/Generation ag Féile Idirnáisiúnta Scannán Bheirlín. Is é an chéad scannán Gaeilge a taispeánadh ag an bhféile agus tuairiscítear go bhfuair sé ceithre bhabhta bualadh bos ón lucht féachana sa Ghearmáin. Tugadh ardmholadh don chineamatagrafaíocht, don scór agus don aisteoir óg Catherine Clinch atá sa phríomhpháirt. Níl Catherine ach dhá bhliain déag d'aois agus is é seo a céad pháirt. Is é An Cailín Ciúin an chéad scannán fada ag an stiúrthóir Colm Bairéad agus ag an léiritheoir Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, ón gcomhlacht Inscéal. Tá an scannán bunaithe ar scéal de chuid Claire Keegan ina insítear scéal Cháit, cailín óg 9 mbliana d'aois ó theaghlach atá róphlódaithe agus mífheidhmiúil agus a chuirtear ar shiúl chun cónaí le tuismitheoirí altrama don samhradh í. Dé réir tuarascáil nua, tá an Fhraincis i mbaol a báis mar gheall ar mhéadú mór ar úsáid an Bhéarla sa Fhrainc. Sa tuarascáil, a scríobh an Académie Francaise nó Acadamh na Fraincise, cáintear an méid téarmaí agus focail Bhéarla atá á n-úsáid i gcáipéisí rialtais, sa litríocht chorparáideach agus i bhfeachtais eolais don phobal. Déantar cur síos ar neart samplaí den Bhéarla á úsáid in áit na Fraincise, mar shampla, tionscnamh comhshaoil i sléibhte Auvergne faoin ainm “zero emission valley” agus an teicneolaícht nua “Easy Drive” a úsáideann comhlacht carranna Renault. Dúirt údair na tuarascála go bhfuil an úsáid sin ag cur as do chomhréir na teanga agus ag deighilt na tíre ar bhonn teangeolaíochta. Bunaíodh an t-Acadamh sa bhliain sé déag triocha a cúig agus daichead intleachtóirí a bhíonn ina mbaill de, ar a dtugtar na ‘buanlaochra'. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. This is the first time that a feature film has been shown in Irish at the Berlin Film Festival. Seo é an chéad uair riamh ar taispeáineadh scannán fada i nGaeilge ag Féile Scannánaíochta Bheirlín. 'The Silent Girl' tells the story of Kate, a 9 - year - old girl from an overcrowded and dysfunctional family who is sent away to live with foster parents for the summer. Insíonn 'An Cailín Ciúin' scéal Cháit, cailín óg 9 mbliana d'aois ó theaghlach atá róphlódaithe agus mífheidhmiúil agus a chuirtear ar shiúl chun cónaí le tuismitheoirí altrama don samhradh í. 'The Silent Girl' is based on the acclaimed short story '' Foster '' by Clare Nic Aogáin, and is a complex, witty play about adulthood that explores family issues, neglect and nostalgia through the eyes of its young protagonist. Tá ‘An Cailín Ciúin' bunaithe ar an ghearrscéal ardmholta ''Foster'' le Clár Nic Aogáin, agus dráma casta, cigilteach is ea é faoi theacht in aois a dhéanann iniúchadh ar cheisteanna teaghlaigh, neamairt agus cumha trí shúile a phríomhcharachtair óig. Speaking about the award, Colm Bairéad said: "It was a real honor to have our First Performance at the Berlinale this year next to so many great films as part of the Generation Kplus program. The Grand Prix 's' An Cailín Ciúin' is a huge indication that TG4, Screen Ireland and the BAI have made the right decision in their vision for indigenous Irish language filmmaking and its potential for overseas. Is léiriú ollmhór gur bhain 'An Cailín Ciúin' an Grand Prix go ndearna TG4, Screen Ireland agus an BAI an cinneadh ceart ina bhfís maidir le scannánaíocht dhúchasach as Gaeilge agus a hacmhainn le síniú amach thar lear. It's a beautiful testament to the wonderful work of our crew and cast of actors, especially the lovely Caitríona Clinse, who was the light that guided us in making this film. " Is mór an dea-theist álainn ar obair éachtach ár gcriú agus ár bhfoirne aisteoirí í, ar Chaitríona Clinse aoibhinn ach go háirithe, arbh í an solas í a threoraigh sinn trí dhéanamh an scannáin seo." TG4 Director General Alan Esslemont said: "Congratulations to Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, Colm Bairéad and all the staff at Inscéal who worked on 'An Cailín Ciúin' for their excellent work and the great reception they received. the film from both viewers and critics. Dúirt Ard-Stiúrthóir TG4, Alan Esslemont: "Comhghairdeas ó chroí le Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, Colm Bairéad agus leis an bhfoireann ar fad in Inscéal a d'oibrigh ar 'An Cailín Ciúin' as a sár-obair agus as an bhfáiltiú iontach a fuair an scannán ón lucht féachana agus léirmheastóirí araon. I would like to thank my own colleagues in TG4 and our partners in. And the BAI for their continued and pioneering commitment to Irish language film. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil le mo chomhghleacaithe féin i TG4 agus lenár gcomhpháirtithe i bhFís Éireann agus an BAI as a dtiomantas leanúnach agus ceannródaíoch don scannánaíocht Ghaeilge.
