On this day in 1959, “A Raisin in the Sun” debuted on Broadway, making history as the first play produced by a Black woman, Lorraine Hansberry. Starring Sidney Poitier and Claudia McNeil, the play was inspired by Langston Hughes' poem "Harlem ('A Dream Deferred')" and depicted a struggling Black family in Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood. Originally titled “The Crystal Stair,” it was Hansberry's first play after leaving her writing job. Despite being a debut work, it ran for 530 performances and was widely acclaimed. Hansberry became the first Black playwright and the youngest American to win a New York Critics' Circle Award, cementing her legacy as a groundbreaking voice in American theater. The vulnerability, tied to an absent security feature in the ignition switch, affects vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021 that use traditional turnkey ignition systems instead of push-button starts. In response, Kia has supplied steering wheel locks to the police department for distribution to local residents. Vehicle owners from the specified years can obtain a lock by reaching out to Capt. Salvador Ortega via email. To further safeguard their vehicles, police suggest implementing additional security measures such as installing kill switches, battery disconnects, alarms, and GPS tracking devices, and ensuring cars are parked in well-lit, secure areas. Dorianne Laux's sixth collection,Only As the Day is Long: New and Selected Poems  was named a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Her fifth collection, The Book of Men, was awarded The Paterson Prize. Rebecca is someone that Rev. Al and I have both known for a long time. She was married to an incredible man who also had vision the late Leroy Hoffberger, father to one of my best friends Doug Hoffberger... Smaltimore... Rebecca has done an incredible job with the American Visionary Arts Museum, how about this fact, AVAM is second to the BMA when it comes to visitors and that's saying something given the incredible Museums we have in Baltimore.  Rebecca is gifted and she has the most beautiful soul, she's traveled the world and worked with some incredible minds.   A life-long devotee of the power of intuition and fresh thought, Hoffberger was accepted into college at age 15 though chose instead the personal invitation of internationally renowned mime Marcel Marceau, to become his first American apprentice in Paris. By 19, Rebecca had co-founded her own ballet company and by 21, was a sought-after consultant to a broad spectrum of nonprofits, including research and development scientific companies. At 25, she was awarded the title of “Dame” for her work to establish medical field hospitals in Nigeria. She studied alternative and folk medicine in Mexico. Returning to the States, Hoffberger served on the Board of the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Center in Virginia and worked as Development Director at the Sinai Hospital's Department of Psychiatry for People Encouraging People, where she first conceived her unique national visionary museum/education center. In recognition of this distinguished achievement in the museum field, Hoffberger was awarded the 2011 Katherine Coffey Award by the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums. Hoffberger has received Honorary Doctorates from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Stevenson University, Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and McDaniel College, as well as awarded Loyola College's Andrew White Award—the school's highest civic honor—the College of Notre Dame Sarah's Circle Award, and was selected as Franklin & Marshall College's Conrad Nelson Lecturer. She is an inductee into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame, a winner of the Urban Land Institute's National Award for Excellence, Israel Bonds' Golda Meir Award, and the first recipient of the Sir Arthur C. Welcome Back!On this episode, Beth and Andrew speak with the powerhouse father-son team of Shelby and Eli Steele about race relations in America. Both Shelby and Eli share their views on the recent Claudine Gay affair at Harvard University and give their opinions on whether this event marks a turning point in the fight against the diversity, equity and inclusion regime. Shelby talks about his own upbringing and his family's experience in the Civil Rights movement and remarks upon why the Civil Rights movement went wrong. He talks about how the idea of “white guilt” plays a prominent role in today's obsession with identity. Shelby also shares his strong views on the similarities between how victimhood is used by race hustlers in the black community and with the ongoing events in Israel and with Hamas. Eli talks about why he, as a part black, part Jewish and hearing impaired man, thoroughly rejects identity politics and victimhood. Eli also discusses the documentary he is currently making with his father, “White Guilt.”Shelby Steele is the Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Senior Fellow (adjunct) at the Hoover Institution. He specializes in the study of race relations, multiculturalism, and affirmative action. He has written widely on race in American society and the consequences of contemporary social programs on race relations. Shelby received the National Book Critic's Circle Award in 1990 in the general nonfiction category for his book The Content of Our Character: A New Vision of Race in America (HarperCollins, 1998). Other books by Steele include Shame: How America's Past Sins Have Polarized Our Country (Basic Books, 2015), A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win (Free Press, 2007), White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era (HarperCollins, 2006) and A Dream Deferred: The Second Betrayal of Black Freedom in America (HarperCollins, 1998). Shelby is also a member of the National Association of Scholars, the national board of the American Academy for Liberal Education, the University Accreditation Association, and the national board at the Center for the New American Community at the Manhattan Institute.Eli Steele is an award-winning filmmaker and “What Killed Michael Brown?” marked his first professional collaboration with his father, Shelby Steele. A graduate of Claremont McKenna College and Pepperdine University's School of Public Policy, Steele's career highlights include “How Jack Became Black,” “What's Bugging Seth,” winner of ten film festivals, and “Katrina,” an MTV Network pilot which won him the Breakthrough Filmmakers Award. Peter Carroll's distinguished career has spanned over 100 productions and 50 years. He continues to work in musical theatre, new Australian texts, and global classics. He has worked with the major theatre companies and commercial managements in Australia including, MTC, QTC, STC, STCSA, Belvoir, Bell Shakespeare, and Opera Australia.  Peter began his career as a teacher (English, History and Drama) while gaining experiences in theatre work. In 1968 he went to London to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama where he topped the course. He returned to Sydney in 1970 and for three years headed the Voice and Speech department at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. During this time, he produced many plays for the students and kept up his acting work with guest appearances. At the end of 1973 Peter decided to attempt a full-time acting career and his work since then has more than vindicated his choice. He was a founding member in the 1970's of the Nimrod Theatre Company, performing up to seven or eight major roles a year, ranging from Shakespeare and Restoration comedy to contemporary Australian drama. He has acted for the Sydney Theatre Company from its beginnings at the Sydney Opera House. Some of his early performances were as Benedick in John Bell's hilarious production of Much Ado About Nothing, the dual roles of Hotspur and Pistol in Richard Wherrett's production of Henry IV, Jesus in a Perth Festival production of The Mystery Plays of Wakefield and Thomas à Becket in a Perth Festival production of Murder in the Cathedral. As one of Australia's most admired and popular stage actors, he is particularly well remembered for his beautifully studied role of the Catholic priest in Ron Blair's one-character play, The Christian Brothers, which was performed to acclaim from leading critics and audiences in all Australian capitals, numerous country centres, NZ and Riverside studios in London. In a vast career some standout performances include, Money and Friends, The Cherry Orchard, The Blind Giant is Dancing, A Hard God, Happy Days and Night on Bald Mountain. His repertoire is extensive. His casting in the role of Juan Peron, in the musical Evita marked a return to the earliest days of his career when he sang Gilbert and Sullivan productions at Sydney University. Playwright Kathryn Keats visited Playwright's Spotlight to talk about her solo beat musical, The Hummingbird, and the tragic events that led her into going into hiding, coming out on the other side, and the development of the piece, and the catharsis of playwriting. We also discuss the importance of knowing your material, structure in performance art and what it looks like on the page, the difficulty in defining beat poetry, piecing together your play, adding missing elements, the wonderful world of writing and playing with its elements. She also shares how being an acting coach has helped her as a playwright by knowing a characters wants and drives, the need of a reaction if a character doesn't achieve it, and who deserves a seat at the table. He is the Managing Partner of Radiant Storage which just acquired a 350 unit self storage property outside of Birmingham Alabama. His background is in multifamily investing as a general partner with over 1,000 units spread across the United States. For the past three years, Powell shifted his focus from multi family to self storage. He has presented at my FIBI Real Estate Multi Family meeting and has been featured on many different platforms and podcasts.    Powell Chee: Purchased his first property in 2017 in Indianapolis Indiana and has since became a partner in acquiring over 1,000 units and counting. During the pandemic Powell began investing in storage units with his company Radiant Storage. Paul Monette (October 16, 1945--February 10, 1995)  was the author of at least 4 novels: Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll (1978), The Gold Diggers (1979), Afterlife (1990), and Halfway Home (1991). He also wrote Sanctuary, a fable, which was illustrated by Vivienne Flesher and published posthumously in 1997. His first nonfiction book, Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir (1988) received a National Book Critic's Circle Award nomination and won a Lambda Literary Award. His second memoir is Becoming a Man; his third book of nonfiction is Last Watch of the Night, published in 1994. His books of poems are The Carpenter at the Asylum, in 1975; No Witness (1981), and Love Alone: Eighteen Elegies for Rog (1988). His New and Selected Poems is called West of Yesterday, East of Summer (1994). AMERICAN BUFFALO premiered on Broadway in 1977, received the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play and officially established David Mamet as one of the major new playwrights of the second half the 20th century. It went on to be nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play for the 1983 production. The play was subsequently revived off-Broadway in 1981, on Broadway in 1983 and off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theatre Company in 2000. Jackson.  A Strange Loop, his play about a Black queer musical theater writer who is writing a play about a Black queer musical theater writer who is writing a play about a Black queer theater writer…, has wowed audiences and critics. Capturing some of 2020's most prestigious awards, including the Lambda Literary Award for Drama and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, A Strange Loop became the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama without a Broadway run, and Michael R. Jackson is the first Black artist to win a Pulitzer for a musical. (The NEA funded the world premiere of A Strange Loop, which was produced by Playwrights Horizons in 2019.)  The show emerged from the pandemic with a production in Washington DC at the Woolly Mammoth theater in  December 2021 which then transferred to Broadway-- opening in April 2022. Along with glowing reviews and cheering audiences, the play has also received 11 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Score. A Strange Loop is bawdy, joyous, disturbing, funny, and heartbreaking. The songs are often bouncy tunes that stay in your head while the lyrics can tear at your heart.  In this podcast, Jackson talks about the years spent creating A Strange Loop, sharing that because he never thought the play would ever be produced, he just wrote what he wanted. He also discusses the possibilities that theater offers, his determination "to make works that are as challenging as they are entertaining," and the importance of soap operas in his early career. In 1972, Richard Nixon made a historic visit to China. The trip broke 25 years of silence between the U.S. and China, paving the way for the establishment of full diplomatic relations later in the decade. Around the same time, second-generation Chinese American Gish Jen started writing; she first visited China with her family in 1979, the experience undoubtedly shaping her identity as both a Chinese American and a writer. Jen's latest book, Thank You, Mr. Nixon, collected 11 stories spanning 50 years since Nixon's landmark visit and meeting with Chairman Mao. Beginning with a cheery letter penned by a Chinese girl in heaven to “poor Mr. Nixon” in hell, Jen embarked on a witty (and at times heartbreaking) journey through U.S.-China relations, capturing the excitement of a world on the brink of change. The stories paint vignettes of the lives of ordinary people after China's reopening: a reunion of Chinese sisters after forty years; a cosmopolitan's musings on why Americans “like to walk around in the woods with the mosquitoes”; and Hong Kong parents who go to extremes to reconnect with their “number-one daughter” in New York. Together with writer Daniel Tam-Claiborne, Gish Jen discussed stories of culture and humanity sparked by a pivotal era in U.S.-Chinese history. Gish Jen has published short work in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and dozens of other periodicals, anthologies and textbooks. Her work has appeared in The Best American Short Stories four times, including The Best American Short Stories of the Century, edited by John Updike. Nominated for a National Book Critics' Circle Award, her work was featured in a PBS American Masters' special on the American novel and is widely taught. Jen is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been awarded a Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, a Guggenheim fellowship, a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study fellowship, and a Mildred and Harold Strauss Living; she has also delivered the William E. Massey, Sr. Lectures in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University. She is currently a Visiting Professor at Harvard. Daniel Tam-Claiborne is a multiracial essayist and author of the short story collection What Never Leaves. His writing has appeared in Literary Hub, The Rumpus, SupChina, The Huffington Post, The Shanghai Literary Review, and elsewhere. A 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow, he has also received fellowships and awards from the U.S. Fulbright Program, the New York State Summer Writers Institute, Kundiman, the Jack Straw Writers Program, and the Yiddish Book Center. Donal Courtney,  a wonderful actor, director and facilitator at the age of 52 and the marvel that was Michelle Forde, writer, producer and artist. These include the four-part IFTA-nominated series The Joy (TV3), the award-winning feature-length drama documentary The Maamtrasna Murders (TG4), the IFTA award-winning docudrama Cumann na mBan – Women of the Revolution (TG4) and the IFTA-nominated documentary Frank O'Connor - Idir Dhá Shruth. Colm's 2013 fly-on-the-wall doc series An Ceoldráma (The Musical) was nominated for three IFTA Awards, including Best Director. Just a minimal understanding of how white mobs have operated in the face of Black progress or advancement could have laid a foundation so that no one would have been surprised by the insurrectionist behavior of the white mob at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Her book examines the racially discriminatory, legally sanctioned policies in the housing sector that led to Chicago becoming a model of racial segregation and racial inequality that continues to this day. Making the Second Ghetto: Race & Housing in Chicago, 1940-1960 by Arnold Hirsch. This book, rich in details and research, helps one understand the horrific, extraordinarily overpriced conditions Black people were forced to live in as the “Black Belt” section of Chicago, where most Blacks were contained, became more and more dangerously overcrowded. The book delivers deeply documented details about white mobs, violence, and policies that worked to restrict Black movement in Chicago. The Autobiography of Black Chicago by Dempsey Travis. Travis, a WWII veteran, realtor, activist, and Chicagoan presents an excellent mix of autobiography of himself and the Black community in the city. At the end of the book, he publishes a number of interviews of people who were high profile movers and shakers advocating for the Black community in different spheres of life in Chicago. The Case for Reparations by Ta Nehisi Coates. This seminal article makes a case for reparations to Black people by excavating some of the horrific inequities in the housing market in Chicago, as well as the inequities in federal housing policies that deeply injured Black people—financially, as well as socially, culturally, and politically—while reporting on some of the ways in which Black Chicagoans fought for homeownership at a time when getting a mortgage was out of the question for most, regardless of income. This was at a time when land installment contracts, on a take it or leave it basis, (adhesion contracts) were used as a mechanism for thwarting so many Black people's dreams of purchasing a home—while making many white “sellers,” who preyed on Black people‘s desire for home ownership, extremely wealthy. A Raisin in the Sun, the 1959 award-winning play by Lorraine Hansberry. The play, which won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, was inspired by Hansberry's family's fight to leave the dangerously overcrowded “Black Belt” to move into a spacious home in the previously all white Woodlawn section of the city near the University of Chicago. The next day after the Hansberry's moved in, the white female neighbor next door filed suit (Lee v. Hansberry, 1940) alleging that they could not occupy the home because of the racially restrictive covenant in the deed preventing Blacks from purchasing the home. (Racially restrictive covenants in deeds were prevalent in Chicago.) Hansberry was 28-years-old when she won the Critics' Award.
