Sean Baker's impassioned speech at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards (watch it here: https://youtu.be/yIxtMGRlx0k?si=0_QCG3cLpvqFDWKd) resonated deeply with me. Like him, I'm an indie film lifer—and that's okay. We get to define success on our terms, and we must demand what we're worth. The money is out there, and while we're not asking for a fortune, we won't accept pennies either. Indie filmmakers create jobs, revenue, and art that matters. It's time we shape the industry rather than let it shape us. Let's do this.

Always so much fun!Happening more and more each year, we are seeing some Spirit Award nominees also nominated for an Oscar (and other awards). This year we've got overlap with “American Fiction,” “Past Lives,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and “The Zone of Interest.”What makes the Spirit Awards so different from the usual suspects in the film and TV awards arena is that Film Independent focuses smaller, lower-budget films that highlight “uniqueness of vision, original[ity], and provocative subject matter.” Spirit Award films represent a diversity of people, cultures, and ideas, the likes of which you just don't find in the other major awards shows. We always find some amazing gems amongst the nominees. "Everything is in a cycle, and the cycle is dictated by the audience's needs and wants, the studio's needs and wants in terms of the financial bottom line, right? Those two very evolving organisms are always trying to sync into the right gear. So, I don't worry anymore because it always comes back around. You're in this long enough, you just go, all right, this is a cycle, it'll come back around."  Stephanie Allain Stephanie Allain of Homegrown Pictures, is a prolific film and television producer dedicated to creating content by and about women and people of color with authentic stories, depictions, and representation. She began her career in the mid-80s as a reader at the elite talent agency, CAA, a job that required reading scripts and books submitted to the agency and providing coverage of the material, often the first barrier for further consideration and development.  In her next position at Columbia Pictures, as one of only two African-American readers,  a young USC student found his way to her under the guise of interest in a job. Instead that student, John Singleton, pitched her Boyz in the Hood and the rest, as they say, is history. Stephanie worked with John Singleton on five movies: Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Higher Learning (1995), Hustle & Flow (2005) and Black Snake Moan (2006). She also produced Something New, Peeples, Beyond The Lights, Dear White People, French Dirty, Burning Sands, Juanita and Really Love. Her work has been nominated for numerous awards with wins from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Film Independent Spirit Awards, NAACP and others. A few of her projects currently in production include her first documentary Untitled Billy Preston, and a limited series for HBO, Sula by Toni Morrison. Amid a brilliant career, Stephanie became the first black woman to co-produce the Academy Awards (2020) and made history again by becoming the first woman of color to be named as President of the Producer's Guild of America (2022). Hello, Best in Show listener Paul Mescal! It smells like Indie Spirit (and bourbon) in here! Weekend Watchlist's Slim joins Mia, Gemma, and Brian for an in-person debrief of all things Film Independent Spirit Awards. We were on the blue carpet, in the press room and inside the big tent on Santa Monica beach for all the wins. Slim reveals a fear of rollerbladers and spin classes on the sand, Mia meets her biggest fan (producer of the Filipino comedy Leonor Will Never Die), and everyone (and we mean everyone) gushes about Aftersun's lead. Gemma chats with Colm Bairéad, the writer-director of her much-loved The Quiet Girl, while Mia zooms with the movie's star, Catherine Clinch as we look at the Best International Feature Oscar category (where The Quiet Girl has made history as the first in the Irish language to be nominated). And after Slim and Mia had their first glimpse of a big award show, we spend the afterparty talking about our favorite movie scenes at award ceremonies, which takes a surprising turn into spoof flicks. All, this plus the last of the craft guild winners, including a last-second, history-making win from the American Society of Cinematographers. In honor of her achievements with the film, Sandoval was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Her early film works debuted last summer on The Criterion Channel platform, displaying her growth and evolution as a creator, able to embrace new mediums.“With Lingua Franca, I think maybe the radical idea in centering a film about this minority character, a trans Filipina immigrant...I think a lot of films or media that depict or feature that kind of character almost always emphasize their trauma and just their marginalization or being subjected to all kinds of prejudice and discrimination. But what I set out to do in Lingua Franca was to bring out and depict her sense of selfhood and agency first, especially in the first few sequences of the film, by just observing her being and going about her daily morning rituals and routines as a caregiver to this elderly Russian lady. And I think by training my camera at those rituals, which seem mundane and routine, I'm essentially saying as a filmmaker, that this is a person. A woman and her daily rituals are worth chronicling, are worth paying attention to anything. Just by seeing this woman go about her daily tasks, I think I was already dignifying that life and that perspective, that it's important and that it matters.”www.imdb.com/name/nm4583383/www.fxnetworks.com/shows/under-the-banner-of-heavenThe Criterion Channelwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.org

“With Lingua Franca, I think maybe the radical idea in centering a film about this minority character, a trans Filipina immigrant...I think a lot of films or media that depict or feature that kind of character almost always emphasize their trauma and just their marginalization or being subjected to all kinds of prejudice and discrimination. Just by seeing this woman go about her daily tasks, I think I was already dignifying that life and that perspective, that it's important and that it matters.”Redefining being a multi-hyphenate for artistic control and representation, Sandoval made her television debut directing the 6th episode for the new FX limited series, Under the Banner of Heaven based on the New York Times best seller by Jon Krakauer. And that resonated with me because I was raised Catholic in the Philippines. I was born and grew up in the Philippines, which is the most predominantly Catholic country in Asia. In fact, 95% of Filipinos are Roman Catholic, but as I grew older, actually went to Catholic schools and universities from kindergarten until college, and then the more I learned about the history of the Catholic Church and the atrocities and the injustices that it has committed, especially in the name of colonialist and imperialist pursuits in the Middle ages, the more I questioned its control over me and my life.”www.fxnetworks.com/shows/under-the-banner-of-heavenThe Criterion Channelwww.imdb.com/name/nm4583383/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.org
