Amy Zirkle is the interim CEO of the Electronic Transactions Association (ETA). Prior to joining ETA, she spent 17 years working as a Senior Economist focusing on technology matters including mobile payments in the developing world. She holds an S.M. degree from M.I.T. where she served as a Research Associate at the M.I.T. Media Lab as well as the M.I.T. Research Program on Communications Policy. Amy and I talked about her work at the M.I.T. Media Lab, the early days of electronic payments and their exploding growth today. We also chatted about the new tap & go cards, their security, and how they work. I asked about the CurrentC disaster as well as restaurants and gas stations and how they seem to lag behind modern payment methods. We finished with a discussion of the future of electronic payments.

More Than Just Code podcast - iOS and Swift development, news and advice
This week we follow up on fuel economy, Apple Pay coming to Target and other US retailers, Windows Phone is end of life, and Apple is selling the iPhone SE at clearance pricing. Apple is unifying developer roles. Tim Cook on privacy is discussed. Picks: Use a custom "inspect" extension to debug pipelines, Fastlane, New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl.
We feature columnist and author Josh Centers, Managing Editor for TidBITS, and author of "Take Control of Apple TV" and other titles. During this session, Josh dips into the status of Apple Pay and compares it with Walmart Pay. And what happened to the Apple Pay rival, CurrentC, which Walmart and other vendors had been testing? You'll also hear Josh's reaction to the iOS 10 beta, and what he regards as the best features. Both iOS 10 and macOS Sierra are being made available as public betas for download by Apple customers. You'll also hear from commentator Bryan Chaffin, co-founder and co-publisher of The Mac Observer. He'll focus on a report that scientists are attempting to use a 3D printer to match the fingerprints of a deceased person in order to open a protected smartphone. It's not stated whether this is an iPhone, which sets a 48-hour limit for fingerprint access before requiring a passcode. Bryan will also talk about rumors that Apple is ditching the old fashioned headphone jack on the next iPhone in place of using the Lightning port and an adapter. You'll also hear about reports that Apple has delayed production of an Apple Car until 2021, the potential downsides of self-driving, and about a curious statement about Apple from BlackBerry CEO John S. Chen.

Good morning, welcome to Payments Monitor, my name is Faisal Khan, today is the 21st of October 2015, some trending stories today are: TOP STORIES Sweden is well on its way to become the first country that would be completely cashless. With greater acceptance of electronic payments, especially P2P payments, cash usage is fast diminishing. Sweden is one of the few countries where consumers use bank cards for even the smallest of transactions. Fintech gurus have been saying for years that bank branches are on a decline. This is especially true for UK, where more than 650 bank branches are set to disappear by the end of 2015. In the past 10 years, over 25% of bank branches in the UK have closed down. With the advent of new challenger banks that are opening up their digital branches, the practical value of visiting a branch has been all but eliminated. Credit Suisse will raise $6.3 Billion in a strategy shift, especially after its recent job cut and poor performance. One investor recently cited that “Credit Suisse is going through a reboot”. Second time’s the charm for Microsoft (hopefully) as the Redmond software giant ventures out into the world of mobile payments again, with its little known Windows Mobile Wallet. Many listeners may not know, but I broke the story of Microsoft getting their money transmitter licenses earlier this year when I stumbled upon their license filing by accident. Alibaba grows its presence in the European market. The Chinese B2B giant recently announced its European expansion plans which includes adding an office in the UK and a new country office in Italy as part of its greater Gateway to China strategy. eBay quarter results are due today, most analysts predict a muted quarter and a focus to buy back shares. MCX adds ACH to its CurrentC wallet, the service is provided by Buy It Mobility Networks (better known as BIM). Rwanda might just become the first country to utilize drones for deliveries to far flung remote areas to boost e-commerce in the region. STARTUP OF THE WEEK: Its Wednesday and that means, time for the startup of the week. This week, I would like to talk about a European startup called “Pouch”, which has released its Pouchcard, a virtual debit card that parents can provide to their kids in seconds. Money can be spent wherever debit cards are accepted. The cool thing about this startup is that it is focusing more on introduction to money and financial responsibility as far as children are concerned, educating them, making them more aware about how they manage and spend their money. The website is www.pouchcard.com CLOSING THOUGHTS If you want to win the business of millennials, better up your game. Millennials who in 2015 surpassed Generation X as the largest living generation and now represent the largest workforce in the US, are tech savvy to say the least. From a better banking experience to wearable technology, millennials are all about the web/mobile experience and they are extremely finicky. Winning their business means upping your game to the same level as the tech startups of Silicon Valley, giving users the same experience that they have with all their other apps. That’s all for today, my name is Faisal Khan and you were listening to the Payments Monitor.

Our three topics this week are Google's Alphabet restructuring, privacy policies and concerns for major smartphone vendors, and trends in mobile payments. We kick off with a discussion of Google's announcement that it will create a new parent company called Alphabet under which the core Google business and Google's various new initiatives will be subsidiaries. We discuss the pros and cons of this approach and what it means for Google going forward. Our Question of the Week is about the different levels of privacy protection offered by the major smartphone platforms and the implications that has for their ability to provide effective cloud services. Our third topic is mobile payments, prompted by recent announcements about payment platform CurrentC, which seems to be struggling, Samsung's announcement today of Samsung Pay's impending launch, and the ongoing rollout of Apple Pay. And in our Weekly Pick, Aaron recommends some running shoes. As usual, links and so on on our website at podcast.beyonddevic.es.
Lots of follow up and little news tidbits this week. Our malware woes seem weak compared to what Android users are facing. CurrentC is losing its exclusivity before it even launches. And we're getting excited about new iPhones and iPads coming soon!
Apple had an amazing quarter, except those pesky iPad sales. CurrentC might be coming soon, but Apple Pay already has it beat. And can Tim Cook throw shade or what?

Google Wallet came first, and while Apple was working on their payments, the credit/debit card providers started working on their own payment of the future. Meanwhile, Bitcoin is still hanging around. Curt Schmidek joins us today to help discern the differences between them all, and how they all operate.
Today we take a look at Merchant Consumer Exchange (MCX) and CurrentC, the contactless payment system that is positioned as a competitor to Apple Pay. As mobile payments make considerable inroads to obfuscate credit cards and cash there is a deeper battle brewing out there. This one isn't just between Softcard or CurrentC or ApplePay, it is at the core. On one side you have NFC, on the other you have the likes of QR codes and Bluetooth. Stuck in the middle? The consumer. How will this shake out? Will there be a winner? No one knows but Chuck gives us the current lay of the land in the heavyweight battle for your wallet.

This week, we're talking news from Amazon and their new Fire Stick, HBO/CBS and their new services, Facebook's Rooms, Google's Inbox and the ridiculous true story of Apple Pay and CurrentC. Catch all our episodes on our website, http://dontpanic.io and follow us on Twitter @dontpanicshow.
