I will be talking about the recent attacks by Iran against Israel and discussing the growing violence with an emphasis on the Israeli decision of whether to retaliate again and if so how. Yes, my beat is war this week and there is no shortage of war to talk about. The powers that be love their wars and so they tend to make them happen. There are other issues, of course, like the criminal trial of Donald Trump by George Soros funded proxies in New York City, but war trumps everything, no pun intended. I will also take this introductory paragraph to remind you that there will be no Castle Report next week since I will be attending the Constitution Party National Convention. If you are there look me up, I would love to talk with you. I also remind you that yesterday, the 18th of April was the 82nd anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo and other Japanese cities. The 80 men who took part are all dead now, but I take this moment to honor their act of courage and sacrifice. Yes folks, I know this news must be shocking to you but there's war in the Middle East. President Biden did his best to stop it with one word but it hasn't worked so far. However, his word serves as the title of this Castle Report. Don't was the one-word warning given by the President of the United States regarding whether Iran would attack Israel. I suppose that word was meant to convey the message that the president is a tough guy and not someone to be trifled with. The Iranians apparently did not get the message because over last weekend they launched hundreds of attack drones and cruise missiles against Israel.  The Iranians said the attack was in retaliation and a “punishment” for the Israeli attack of April 1 against the Iranian Consulate in Damascus Syria which killed 7 Iranians including two general officers. The Israelis said that attack was in response to the October 7, 2023, attack by the Iranian proxy group, Hamas, against Israel in which some 1400 Israelis died. It seems that one Middle East country or another is retaliating for something just about every day of the week. The nations of the Middle East seem to be run by people who can never forget anything so consider these examples for a moment.  1953, the CIA and British Mi6 helped Iranian royalists depose the elected Iranian president, Mossadegh in a military coup code named Operation Ajax, like the cleaner. The Shah was allowed to extend his power and ruled as absolute monarch for more than two decades until the Iranian Revolution in 1979 in which Ayatollah Khomeini was reinstalled as leader. You probably remember the hostage crises resulting from all that intrigue, but the point is this was all about regime change in Iran to a regime more suitable to the U.S. and I think that is still the case. When the U.S. signed the Algiers Accords ending the hostage crises it agreed to never again participate in regime change against whatever regime ruled Iran. The Mullahs have been clinging tenaciously to power ever since constantly retaliating for one thing or another. The most recent attack against Israel was retaliation for the April 1 attack against the Iranian Damascus Consulate as I said, but also for the January 3, 2020, killing in Baghdad of General Qusem Soleimani. The general was a very important Iranian leader and a beloved figure in Iran. That attack was conducted by the U.S. and was reportedly personally signed off on by President Trump. Was it ordered by Israel? I'm sure the Iranians think it was, and so we continue in an endless cycle of retaliation and violence. Where will it all lead or what will happen next because ...

Black shares in a 6/21/2021 speech at the Schiller Institute, concerns of US foreign policy, detailing why he is "appalled at the indecency of US aggression towards Syria" and stressed that the US is implicated in helping and empowering terrorist organization in Syria. The Republican former lawmaker is a legal expert and twice visited Syria and Assad in April 2016 and Sept of 2018, making him one of the most credible voices of the counter dominant narrative that former Secretary of State John Kerry promoted in his half dozen or so major misrepresentations he defiantly argued and defended during his 9/3/13 congressional testimony. Black's speech content was in alignment with Root Claim.org findings, described below, which they argue "are a result of what we believe to be the most impressive independent open-source investigation in history". What follows is a wide-ranging critique by Richard Black & Pedro Gatos of the dominant narrative we have been taughtto believe about Syria its leader Assad and the war that has raged since 2011. For this episode my guest is AbdulRazaq Aljazaerli, a Syrian refugee living in Cambridge Ontario. Originally from Damascus Syria, AbdulRazaq immigrated here to Canada with his mother, to Cambridge five years ago, after four years as a refugee in Jordan. He has been attending school to learn English, and like the rest of the world, has had many of his plans delayed and put on hold during this pandemic. He is also blind, which further complicates this pandemic (and he has been very thankful for the support of the CNIB Foundation throughout his transition to Canada). He remains positive and optimistic despite the complicated circumstances, inspired by Canada and eager to pursue work, and it was incredible to hear about his experiences navigating so many intersections of obstacles. Tareq Haddad is a man who's story one only reads in books.  His family had a very successful chocolate factory in Damascus Syria, supplying chocolates to all of the Middle East and internationally. In 2013, Tareq and his family became refugees after the factory was bombed. This journey led them to eventually being placed into Antigonish Nova Scotia, a very rural community 2hrs away from Halifax. They refused to accept the title of victim, and instead continued to help others. They established a factory in Antigonish, started a campaign that helped family afflicted by the Fort McMurray fires, and are now heading towards becoming the top 5 chocolate companies in Canada. Such an inspiring story of hope, persistence, and altruism. Listen to this and be motivated.

Julia Aziz is a junior business major at the University of San Francisco (USF). She was born in the United States, then moved to Damascus, Syria at two years old. While Julia, her father, and her sister have joint U.S.-Syrian citizenship, her mother and brother are citizens of only Syria. On March 6, 2017, President Trump signed a newly revised executive order, which still prohibits the entry of Syrian refugees. Upon graduating from USF, Julia hopes to return to Syria if she can use the skills she has learned as an undergraduate to improve the country and create change.

Rainer Hermann, the editor of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, begins his talk with a contextualization of what Turkey is now and how it came to be that way. At the fall of ‘old Turkey’ there was a void, with several different types of political groups vying for power. In the end however only republicanism was left unchallenged and what then began was the “golden age of the AK Party”. Hermann discussed the new government’s mission “to bring a homogenous Islam in order to shape a homogenous Turkish nation” (Hermann; 6:10). The AKP used “pillars” of power to implement its republican ideology: military, judiciary, and bureaucracy. When AKP took control in 2003 after years of economic stagnation, the AKP was a huge success. And, during the “first decade of the AK Party rule, per capita income was tripled” (Hermann 8:02). On the political front, the AKP created a new civil society, brought Turkey closer to the EU, and made large investments in education and health system programs. Based off of these huge gains in growth, the first years of the party were a success; allowing a new middle class to emerge that was “hungry for both education and economic success”. Overtime, however, maintaining such a high growth rate proved difficult and beginning around 2007 the rate of growth began to decrease. Around this time Erdogan and his party began to experience more opposition; two examples being the military attempt at creating the electronic memorandum and the near constitutional ruling to forbid the ruling AKP. “From then on the leadership of the AKparty went really hard on their internal adversaries” (Hermann; 11:00). This escalated as the leadership, namely Erdogan, sidelined the military and replaced judiciary judges and bureaucrats with his own men. It is at this point where the authoritarian tendencies we now see in Turkey began to flourish. This behavior from Erdogan continues with the protests in the summer of 2013, and further results in a series of hate speeches and witch-hunts. From this escalation we can discern that: “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Hermann; 12:30). From Hermann’s impression and past experience with Erdogan, he tells us that the leader was once rather modest and took advice. Now, however it is clear that Erdogan has become much more bold. As Hermann puts it, Turkey is “now back to square one” (Hermann 13:03). Erdogan has moved Turkey farther away from the European path and is beginning to look more similar to the authoritarian economic rising powers in Asia; perhaps this shift is an attempt to break Turkey out of the “middle-income trap”. Even so, Hermann does not see a likelihood for potential economic changes in Turkey now. However, Hermann does see a potential for change with Erdogan’s character as a leader. Throughout his political history, Erdogan has already had four major changes and therefore “there might be a Erdogan #5, because [he] doesn’t have an ideology. He is a shrewd politician” (Hermann; 16:01). What we are seeing now in Turkey is a one-man show. As Hermann comments, “I think Turkey is off the balance, because everyone is forced to go the way of Erdogan” for lack of another option. During the Q&A portion of the talk, Hermann touched on the polarization of Turkey, the source of Erdogan’s unopposed power, and the direction Turkey is currently heading in. In response to a question about support for Erdogan in Turkey, Hermann replied, “Turkey is highly polarized with 50% of the population behind Erdogan and 50% against”. It now seems unclear as to whether the future of Turkey will follow along Erdogan’s current path, whether Erdogan will have another ideology change, or if a new coalition of opposition groups will find enough power to lead the government. Rainer Hermann has been working as a journalist in Turkey and the Middle East for more than twenty years. As correspondent of the national German daily “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” he has been living in Istanbul from 1991 until 2008, then he moved to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Since 2012 he is an op-ed editor at the daily’s headquarter in Frankfurt, Germany. Rainer Hermannhas studied economics and Middle Eastern studies in Freiburg (Germany), Rennes (France), Basel (Switzerland), and Damascus (Syria). He has an M.A. in economics and a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies. In Germany he has published most recently “The Gulf States” (2011), in March his new German book “Final Destination Islamic State? State Failure and Religious War” will be on sale.
