#382 – Taylor Marie Graham

This week, host Phil Rickaby chats with award-winning playwright, Taylor Marie Graham. We take a thrilling deep dive into the heart of her play, "Corporate Finch," dissecting the complexities of its characters' relationship, the chilling plot within the confines of an abandoned factory, and how a 22-hour writing competition was instrumental in overcoming the writer's block that initially haunted her creation process. Taylor gives us her unique perspective on horror on stage, bringing to light the innovative ways she employed the physical space of the theatre to heighten suspense and tension. Our discussion takes a fascinating turn as we explore the potential of horror in theatre, drawing from the traditional presentations of horror in the theatre before film took the reins. Taylor shares her insights on how live audience, coupled with light and sound manipulation, can escalate the thrill of the genre. We also delve into the interesting challenge of staying one step ahead of the genre, and the excitement it brings. On a more academic note, we delve into Taylor's theatre course at Western University, where she scrutinizes the history of theatre in Toronto, addressing critical questions of representation and identity. As we navigate towards the tail end of our conversation, we cast the spotlight on Taylor's doctoral research on the Blythe Festival. We delve into her process of selecting pivotal moments from the theatre's history to focus on and explore the tragedy of plays that have never seen the light of day. Taylor underscores the importance of ensuring the accessibility of these unpublished plays, shedding light on their often overlooked value. We round off our conversation by addressing the evolution of theatre and its potential to challenge audiences, inviting them to revisit and re-imagine their relationship with this age-old art form. We hope you'll join us for this enlightening exploration of Canada's theatre scene, the thrill of horror on stage, and the intriguing intersections of art and academia. Bio Taylor Marie Graham is an award winning playwright, librettist, director, theatre scholar and educator from Cambridge Ontario. She joined me to talk about her play Corporate Finch, which rounds out a summer of performances with a run at IMPACT Fest in Kitchener, Ontario. In this conversation we talk about the unusual origin of Corporate Finch, taking the play to festivals around Ontario, and her how her academic practice and her artistic practice compliment each other. Here's our conversation. taylormariegraham.com Twitter: @taylormarie_g Instagram: @taylormarie.graham Support Stageworthy Donate: tips.pinecast.com/jar/stageworthy

Dani Kastelein-Longlade and Amina Lalor along with with guest artists Katherine Rae Diemert and Brenda Mabel Reid have created an inspiring and beautiful exhibition, Journey With Our Kin, at the Queens Square Idea Exchange gallery in Cambridge Ontario. The exhibition is open until Feb. 5th, 2023. I got to talk with Dani and Amina about their work at the exhibition, and about how getting to know the lands where we live may interrupt the colonial frameworks we daily navigate. We discuss relationships with the land, the Nokom's House project we have all been a part of, and about their place in the world along with varied identities, passions, and work they take up. This episode is also formulated on the questions Dani and Amina pose with their exhibition: What does it mean to care for the land that cares for us? How do we foster kinship among all our relations — the interconnected network of creation that encompasses the earth, water, air, sun, moon, plants, fungi, and animals? How do we reconcile and bring together multiple perspectives to build community in connection with the land? How do we strengthen our capacity to care for the land? What skills do we need to do so? How do we creatively express our journeys of (re)connection with our other-than-human kin? To know the land is to understand colonialism and its impacts, as well as to know efforts in decolonial space making, which inherently roots relationship with the more-than-human world as a foundation. Understanding histories, and futures, of lands and those who have, do, and will continue to live on them, human and non, is a cornerstone of this “to know the land” project I am working within. The confluence of these conversations, my own project, and the artistic expressions from the exhibition help in conceptualizing, building, and centering intimacy with the wilder world. Naturalist knowledge, or using a different frame, interspecies relationship building, is about healing broken ties and creating new reciprocal approaches between different bodies (human, water, fungal, vegetal, etc). This is what I believe Dani, Amina, Katherine, and Brenda are touching upon in their work. I am grateful for the reflection their creations evoke in me. Big thanks to Dani and Amina for their time, and to Toni Hafkenscheid for taking the photos of the artwork.

“Volcano, Volcano” Steven Lambke rose to prominence as the guitarist of the mighty Canadian outfit The Constantines. The Juno-Award nominated band are a muscular blend of Fugazi, the Replacements and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and they're one of those bands that are redolent with integrity and heart. It's important to note that by the time the Cambridge-Ontario born Lambke joined the Constantines in '99, he'd been in a band called Captain Co-Pilot and had finished his university degree in Physics at the University of Guelph. Over the years he would take a busman's holiday from the band to release albums on his own under the name Baby Eagle, which featured guest appearances from Folks like John K. Sampson of The Weakerthans and Julie Dorion. Lambke's artist run label You've Changed Records put out several more of his albums, including his brand new one, Volcano Volcano. A swirling blend of fractured folk, spritely indie rock and low-fi bedroom pop all recorded using dollar store shakers and guitars procured at Goodwill, Volcano Volcano is a charming blend of raw and nervy songs that infectiously rip through the delicious chaos. This album is uplifting and weird and lovely and real—and whether it's the percussive The World Filled To The Brim, or the rolling perfection of Bats In Blue Twilight, this is one of the most delightful, inspiring and wonderfully raucous albums of 2022. www.youvechangedrecords.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

This week on the show I have CFL standout Chris Ackie. Chris is a linebacker with the Toronto Argonauts and a 2015 first round draft pick. We talk about his career growing up in football from the youth leagues in Cambridge Ontario through to Laurier University into the pros for the past five seasons. We also spoke about the importance of being a multi sport athlete growing up and how the coordinative patterns, habits and overall athleticism improve allowing you to be a more versatile athlete in your sport of choice. The thing I am most impressed with through talking with Chris, and the reason I named the episode Everyone Is Replaceable is the evolution he showed throughout his career. Moving from level to level he took it upon himself to make sure he was successful. Whether it was improving his understanding of training by learning to incorporate more rest & recovery work in the pros, incorporating more hours of film into his week, learning to watch more than just his own play to be able to be better prepared for opponents, or so many other things Chris was able to do to to create the success he has had in his career, the key was always being able to adapt. Everyone in professional sports is replaceable. The way you show you deserve to be there is by adapting and evolving with the game the way Chris has done so successfully throughout his career. To get in contact with Chris or find out more about his football camps, reach him through Instagram @Chrisackie21 or through email: chrisackie35@gmail.comCheck out the full show here;www.elitedevelopmentpodcast.caCheck out my website;www.coachdusseault.comE-mail me: kenny@coachdusseault.comFollow me on social media;Instagram: @coachdusseaultTwitter: @coachdusseaultFacebook: Coach Dusseault - Strength and Conditioning

I headed out to McClintock’s ski this summer, near Cambridge Ontario, to compete in the 2019 Ibuprofen Open. Me and 30 other skiers all aged 35 and up, competed for glory, and a chance to earn our Ibuprofen. While there I brought my recorder and was once again your Career Buzz correspondent, interviewing the cast of characters I met. Today, you’ll meet Teresa Wiwchar who just recently opened the Greater Niagara Ski Club, first of its kind in the Niagara region. Not only is she an amazing waterskier, and competed in the ibuprofen open, but she’s in the business. She bought a farmers field and dredged the small pond to create a long narrow ski lake on her 29 acres near Port Colborne Ontario. Stay tuned for Teresa’s interview. Also, meet Steve Collins. 20 years ago when his son got involved in the sport, well, so did dad Steve. He’s been volunteering in the sport for decades, and now is a chair within the Water Ski Wakeboard Ontario. Now retired, Steve dedicates time to the sport, and was our trusted scorekeeper at the Ibuprofen open. But first, what’s it like to have an athletic gift, and to make a career out of that gift? Just ask Jason McClintock, at 32, his life’s work has been elite waterskiing and ski competition. Jason is Canadian National Water Ski Team member, and the Ontario, Water Ski Team head coach. He holds the Canadian national record in slalom ski. Not just a competitor, Jason also runs the family business McClintocks Water Ski School which hosted the Ibuprofen Open. Now a husband and father of 2 young kids, Jason wears many hats in his career. Here’s my interview with world champion, Jason McClintock.

MIKE Greetings from Southaven, MS, just outside Memphis, TN, where we have been all week watching our 12-year-olld grandson, Jacob, play in the Dizzy Dean League World Series on a team coached by our son, Scott. It’s been great family time for us and we’ve been using our Roadtrek RV as a “boy cave,” an air-conditioned respite for Jacob and his teammates from the 100 degree heat they’ve been having down here, a place to chill out with the AC between games. Those solar panels on our roof have soaked up the southern sun and kept our lithium batteries charged up and we’ve had plenty of power out there in the parking lot. JENNIFER This heat we have experienced this week is happening in many parts of the country. Temperatures approached 120 degrees in parts of the U.S. Southwest on Monday, and forecasters said this week could bring the region's hottest weather of the year. Forecasters issued excessive heat warnings to much of Arizona, including parts of Grand Canyon National Park, and extended into areas of Southern California and Nevada. A heat advisory was in effect for west Texas and southeast New Mexico with high temperatures well into the triple digits. In Waco it was 114 degrees. Parts of Utah were also issued an excessive heat warning with temperatures this week expected to approach 109 degrees. Phoenix reached a sweltering 115 degrees, which broke the previous daily record, according to the National Weather Service. MIKE We are excited this week to announce that our online store is now up and running. If you’ve been watching our RV Lifestyle You Tube Channel you’ve seen us both wearing our hats and shirts complete with our logo. Lots of you have asked how you can get them and we promised we’d find a way. Well we finally have it all set up. Just go to shop.rvlifestyle.com. That’s shop.rvlifestyle.com. And let us know what you think about it. We’ll be adding lots of cool things in the weeks ahead, but right now it has the T-shirts, in men and women sizes, our, hats and a very nice sweatshirt for the colder months that are just around the corner. JENNIFER We’ll be leaving Memphis by the weekend and headed back north again to Michigan where we’ll pick up Bo. He’s been at our daughter’s house there. It has just been too hot for him down here in Memphis. We did take him with us last week to the Owner’s Academy in Cambridge Ontario. We were there in April and they invited us back to the Roadtrek and Erwin Hymer of North America factory there last week. We presented a seminar on our Serendipity Travel style and told some stories from the road as we got to hang out with another cool group of fellow RVers. Bo was really well behaved.
