Our usual host, Sam Tongue, is back from paternity leave, and between feeds and nappy changes has recorded the latest episode of our regular Nothing But The Poem poetry podcast. Special thank you to Aoife Lyall for stepping in and producing 3 wonderful NBTP podcasts on Jane Clarke, Eavan Boland and Billy Collins. Much appreciated. Sam's subject this month is Nuala Watt, an emerging poet, whose work is increasingly recognised for its unique voice, formal daring, and fierce authenticity. Nuala Watt is partially sighted and her poems lead us through "the bureaucratic labyrinth of government assessment, the anxious joy of expecting a child and, with verve and originality, the realities of being a disabled parent". Fellow poet Alyson Hallett commented: "Sit down before you read these poems. Open the window. Open the door. There's a bolt of pure electric coming for you." My thoughts have arrived in the post. I don't know which ones. I think they may be cyclists in the dark. Sam took a deep dive into two poems from Nuala's debut poetry collection, The Department of Work and Pensions Assesses a Jade Fish, which has just been published by Blue Diode  Press. Find out what Sam - and the Friends Of The SPL group - got from these poems in our Nothing But The Poem podcast.

Jane Clarke is the latest subject of the Nothing But The Poem podcast. Jane Clarke is an Irish poet; the author of three poetry collections and an illustrated poetry booklet. Our regular podcast host Sam Tongue is currently on paternity leave and this edition has Bloodaxe poet Aoife Llyall taking an immersive look into three of Jane Clarke's poems, which were discussed at the online monthly meet-up of the Nothing But The Poem group. Poet Carol Rumens wrote that Jane Clarke's poems were "rooted in the landscape of the west of Ireland and the farming context in which the lives of individual humans are played out asserts its own rhythm and narrative. In honouring this larger context Clarke enlarges her poetic field with an unobtrusive but important ecopoetic dimension." The Irish novelist Anne Enright has praised her poems for their "clean, hard-earned simplicity and a lovely sense of line." The three poems discussed in this podcast are When Winter Comes and Hers both from When The Tree Falls (Bloodaxe Books, 2019) and Daily Bread from The River (Bloodaxe Books, 2015).

After your stop off in Fuerty, you will be taking a left at the T-junction and making your way to Castlecoote. It's a short, but beautiful drive through some of the best countryside in Ireland all the while surrounded by the swooping Suck river. Take note of the old schoolhouse on the right. Here we present a poem by local poet, Jane Clarke, whose family still farm the lands you are traveling through right now and for whom the Suck is a recurring theme: - Where the river deepens Bewildered among pillows, tubes and drips, she grips my hand with every kick of pain. I ask if she remembers those days in June, humming with sunshine and hoverflies in purple  loosestrife when she'd meet us at the mill gate  on our way home from school. She carries a basket, heavy with sadness, buttered scones, bottles of lemonade, a crochet hook, balls of unravelled wool. We run through flaggers to where the river deepens, leap from low branches, stub our toes on stones, splash and scream. She watches from the beech-shaded bank, loops wool through her fingers, closes her eyes for a while. Jane Clarke  From the sublime to the ridiculous, the accompanying audio piece also features Jane, this time enjoying Eamonn's wit.

Location: 53.63385, -8.305836    You may wish to observe the river up close by turning right at the T-junction. You will see about twenty fishing docks for the nearby Cuisle Holiday Centre a.k.a Donamon Castle. This is Ireland's leading wheelchair accessible resort and is the Irish Wheelchair Association's National Holiday Centre. It is located within the magnificent 50 acre site of Donamon Castle. Cuisle is a truly unique place where you can escape, unwind and relax. The centre has a fleet of wheelchair accessible transportation that guests can use to travel to and from their homes as well as on day trips, which they regularly organise.  After crossing the Suck once again, you may wish to park up and enjoy the river as it passes by. There are some ornate passing docks along the bridge to allow to fish or observe in comfort. Charlie Clarke's sister, Jane Clarke is a poet and was instrumental in making the audio pieces on this guide happen. Her hearty laugh can be heard with her mother, Dora, on many of the funnier pieces. Many of her pieces are inspired by the river itself:  The River  What surprises me now is not that you're gone  but how I go on without you,  as if I'd lost no more than a finger.  My hand still strong, perhaps stronger, can do what it must,  like carving your name on a branch from the beech by the Suck,  letting the river take you, so I can call myself free.  Only sometimes, like yesterday or the day before, last night or this morning,  the river flows backwards, uphill to my door.  Jane Clarke

Down, tramping through the Mourne Mountains to the thousands of miles he walked across Ireland studying botanics, to his contribution to 800 publications and his 24 books RL Praeger is probably considered Ireland's most influential naturalist. Zoë's guest this week on Shelfmarks is poet Jane Clarke. Jane grew up in Co Roscommon and came to writing after a career in psychotherapy. She moved to Wicklow almost 25 years ago and Zoë visited her there in her home and took a walk up a lane known as Fairy Lane or Lousy Land and listeners will hear two specially commissioned poems about her neighbour and quarrymen. You can read more about Jane Clarke on her website: http://www.janeclarkepoetry.ie/ To write this episode Zoë read The Way that I Went and A Populous Solitude by Robet Lloyd Praeger, Irish Topographical Botany and the Clare Island Survey, as well as the invaluable biography of Praeger The Life of a Naturalist by Sean Lysaght published by Four Courts Press. How they do this has been one of the fundamental questions in biology and the key to combating some of our most challenging diseases, caused by the misfolding of proteins. Jane talks about her journey, from Tottenham schoolteacher to Cambridge Professor and Fellow of the Royal Society, and how, despite the obstacles she's encountered along the way, she's always been driven by her passion to understand the mystery of the machinery of life. Today we welcome Jane Clarke whose knowledge, experience and initiatives continue to push the attribution and measurement market forward. Tune in for an in-depth discussion on the future of standards in attribution and measurement as well as some good tips on choosing a vendor! Guest bio: Jane Clarke has more than 40 years of experience collecting and analyzing global strategic insights for Time Warner, Children’s Television Workshop, and National Geographic. As a CEO and Managing Director of CIMM, the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement, Jane is responsible for developing CIM strategy, vision, and overseeing all day-to-day operations. Most recently, she was Vice-President of Insights and Innovation at Time Warner Media Group where her work fuelled marketing solutions across television, online, mobile and print. She is on the board of the Advertising Research Foundation and Icon Global, was a broadcasting and cable digital all-star in 2014, and received a leadership award from Interactive TV Today in 2016.   Key takeaways: [1:30] I introduce today’s guest, Jane Clarke, and ask her how her journey took her from an internship at National Geographic to Sesame Street to advertising and CIMM, where she is today. She touches on what the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) is and its purpose. [7:12] Cross-platform analysis evolution has been long and slow, Jane explains how it started for her all the way back at National Geographic and how the advent of digital technology revolutionized expectations and enabled the progressive de-siloing of the analytic process. [10:56] Jane dives into the multitude of different data levels that enable an unprecedented level of analysis granularity as well as how each media offers a unique type of information. She expands on CIMM’s mission in this evolving concept as well as the different systems that will be required in the future. [16:20] Jane explains why she says that the data systems currently in place will need to change, starting with the massive differences in who owns the data as well as privacy issues. [21:22] The lack of standardization is currently an issue; Jane details some of the more promising initiatives underway today. [25:23] Some tools are in place to protect brands against fraud but standards will increase trust and incentivize brands to jump into attribution. CIMM is looking at creating some best practices to start things off. [29:10] Data that is used for measurement is sensitive business data, yet a lot of it is available easily, Jane and I discuss the necessity to tighten up security in an environment whose pace is increasing so rapidly! [31:10] Jane shares her tips and advice for advertisers to find and choose a trustworthy vendor. [34:52] I mention control groups and their importance for measuring incrementality. Jane and I go back and forth with some eye-opening moments clients have when they realize most of their sales would have happened anyway — even when siloed attribution was taking credit for everyone walking into the stores! [40:35] The word attribution like the word organic should be used with certification or people falsely using it should be fined! [42:23] Jane offers her vision on the future of attribution. [44:06] Jane shares one thing she knows that no one else knows and I thank her for coming on the podcast to share so much of her experience.   Be sure to tune in for the next episode and thanks for listening!   Connect with our guest: Jane Clarke on LinkedIn Jane Clarke at CIMM   About your host: Jeff Greenfield is the Co-Founder and Chief Attribution Officer of C3 Metrics. For the final episode of this Attribution Accelerator round-up series, Jane Clarke sits with Sima Vasa. They talk about the forum and the deeper focus on the topic of attribution. They also discuss the growth of granular measurement of data across media platforms. Jane Clarke - On CIMM and the Attribution Accelerator Jane is the CEO and Managing Director of the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM). She is responsible for developing CIMM’s strategy and vision and overseeing operations. She says that the Attribution Accelerator is one of the only places where people can get a deep-dive focus on the topic of attribution. This has become very important for all marketers and media companies trying to sell their advertising platforms. Improvements and Challenges There has been some improvement in the granulation of data in relation to television and other media platforms. While this is considered a way forward, there has also been some challenges especially with the more rigid privacy compliance policies. Particularly, the linking of all these data sets for full cross-channel attribution has been challenging because of Google, Facebook and GDPR. Consequently, some people use privacy as an excuse not to share their IDs that link all the exposure on their platforms versus the other platforms that an advertiser can then put together. “I do think there's some hope that the industry can work out a way to do this in a way that works for consumers that is privacy-compliant.” - Jane Clarke Excitement in Television The present challenge of having to match data multiple times from different platforms for an advertiser to arrive at conclusions exists. Despite this, there is excitement in the television side. “There never has been granular TV ad exposure data available before so they can now do some studies done in digital for years.” - Jane Clarke on improvements in TV data measurement Advertisers can’t necessarily link these data. But they are able to get a deeper dive into television that was previously impossible. This is so important for many advertisers since this gives them more credence to rationalize every dollar spent on TV advertising, which continues to be a huge platform. They started with a handful of large advertisers but ended up working with the ANA. They want to fully represent the buy side and the sell side to solve the current data challenges. TV Analytics Challenges - Jane Clarke The challenges are innovating in the area of cross-media management and the second is trying to push to bring more granular measurement to television. Granular measurement has traditionally been a handful of households that have a meter in front of the television and then the people have to push buttons. It's not ideal today. Accounting for Those Challenges Viewing is very fragmented and there are 100's and 100's of cable channels and it's very hard to actually get a large enough panel that can actually represent the long tail of viewing. Census type data like SAT top box data or smart TV data are coming into the market. Jane Clarke says that the problem with these is they are not fully representative because they have a weird footprint like a sample of convenience. There are biases in those types of data. The panels are still being used to help to calibrate all of these big data sets to make them more representative. Gradually as they become more representative we may be able to move away from panels. It’s early morning in the jungle and little gorilla is NOT happy. Whoever woke him up?! As the mystery unfolds, we learn that a chain of events involving an assortment of animals all played a part, and that it all began with… Butterfly, who touched down on the same flower as Bee, which made Bee buzz, which made Frog croak, which made Crocodile thrash, and so on, until Hippo yawned the yawn that woke the baby. And what makes the baby gorilla happy in the end? Why, the dancing Butterfly that woke everyone in the first place! A satisfying cyclical text and repeated refrains make this an unforgettable, read-along romp of a book by the creators of the Gilbert the Great series.
