The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon directed by Nora Twomey. Based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis, the film was an international co-production between Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Luxembourg, and received a limited release on 17 November 2017. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Breadwinner received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards but lost to Coco. The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a 2018 American fantasy comedy film directed by Eli Roth, based on the 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs. It stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan. The film follows a young boy, Lewis, who is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan, in a creaky, old house. He soon learns it was previously inhabited by a villainous warlock. Universal Pictures released the film in the United States on September 21, 2018. It was a box office success, grossing over $131 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews from critics who largely praised the cast, but said the film did not fully live up to its potential. Deborah Ellis works as a mental health residential counsellor in Toronto. She is the winner of the Governor General's Award in Canada (equivalent to the Carnegie Medal) for her first novel Looking for X.She was raised in Paris, Ontario, and from the time she was 17, she has been a political activist advocating non-violence. After high school, she went to Toronto and worked in the Peace Movement. Later she got involved in the Women's Movement, focusing on women's rights and economic justice.Deborah has spent much time in Pakistan, in Afghan refugee camps, talking to women and documenting their lives under 20 years of war. Her main engagement continues to be anti-war politics.Deborah has written four novels about a 12-year-old girl, Parvana, living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan and the challenges that she and her family face. The fourth book, My Name is Parvana, is set against the American invasion and is a period of cautious hope.Since the American withdrawal and the subsequent takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban, Deborah has been compelled to write a fifth novel about Parvana, One More Mountain. She joins Nikki Gamble In the Reading Corner to tell us more about it and her involvement with the women and children of Afghanistan.About One More MountainIt's 2021, and the Taliban have regained power in Afghanistan. Parvana and Shauzia, the brave protagonists of The Breadwinner, must now flee to escape new dangers from an old enemy. It has been 20 years since Parvana and Shauzia had to disguise themselves as boys to support themselves and their families. But when the Taliban were defeated in 2001, it looked as if Afghans could finally rebuild their country. Many things have changed for Parvana since then. She has married Asif, who she met in the desert as she searched for her family when she was a child. She runs a school for girls. She has a son, Rafi, who is about to fly to New York, where he will train to become a dancer. While Asif tries to get Parvana's sister, Maryam, and Rafi on one of the last flights out of Kabul, the Taliban come to the school, and Parvana must lead the girls out of Green Valley and into the mountains.Support the showThank you for listening. This interview was recorded in 2001 and in the introduction recorded at the time I say that the story is no longer relevant as the Taliban are no longer in charge. This was true at the time but sadly the Taliban are back and the the story of The Breadwinner is all too relevant again. Did the UK let these people down?
A Practice to reflect, release, and receive. Through connection ,meditation, mantra, intention, journal and Tarot, we will create space, invite curiosity, surrender to stillness and go within to listen to our sweet sacred heart. To hear our own inner wisdom, to follow our inner compass, and to hear and receive our truth. As we trust in spirit, the Cosmic Universe to support and nourish us on our journey forward into this beautiful new year. A year full of possibilities, change, transformation, abundance, healing, gratitude, compassion , kindness, and love for ourselves and for all beings, Flora and fauna, creatures and Mother earth. For this practice I invite you to have a pen, a paper to journal with, and an item representing each of the 4 elements. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. And any items for extra comfort , a pillow, or bolster, and perhaps a blanket. Maybe a cup of tea, or coffee to sit with as well. I hope you enjoy and benefit from our practice together. Quote: “Where do you want to start?” —Farhad Azad About: Afghanistan has far too often been referred to as a place where countries go to die, it is a graveyard of empires. This moniker has been cited so many times and for so long that it’s unclear who first said it. Even the Afghan community will recite this pride. But what a title like this fails to convey is that while this might be a country responsible for the many tombstones of others, it very well is also a moratorium of progress for itself, a state in perpetual arrested development. This is also a cemetery for countless Afghans who, in more modern times, failed to see any empire rise. Why do some countries get to debate their histories while others have their legacy determined by outsiders? And what gets lost along the way? This is Part II of a multi-part story on how history, current events, and culture all complicate the Afghan identity. **Dragon Ball's Time Trunks** We’ve got a packed episode this week as Producer Rob kicks things off with One Piece Uncut - Collection 19 (episodes 446 to 468), which fans will know is the end of the Impel Down Arc and the beginning of the Marineford Arc (also known as the Paramount War). After that it’s over to our resident DB correspondent Andrew who has Dragon Ball Super parts 3, 4 and 5 before Tucky joins the fray with the harem romantic comedy And You Thought There Was Never A Girl Online? Rounding things off is something beautiful and serious that deals with the horrors of living in under a brutal, zealous and xenophobic regime, the trials and tribulations of being female in such a place, and the salvation that can be found in family. Based on the best-selling book by Deborah Ellis, The Breadwinner is uniquely poignant, masterfully animated, acted and directed, and sometimes almost painful to behold. Sam is joined by writer-director Nora Twomey and voice actor Saara Chaudry to talk about The Breadwinner. In cinemas now. The third feature length film to come out of Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon, after The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2015), Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner revolves around the daily struggles facing 11-year-old Parvana in Taliban-controlled Kabul, Afghanistan. Executive produced by Angelina Jolie and based on Deborah Ellis’ best-selling novel of the same name published in 2000, The Breadwinner is an inspiring and ultimately uplifting tale of familial love and loyalty in the face of oppressionAfter her father is unjustly arrested by the Taliban, Parvana’s family are left without a man of the house, and the young girl is forced to dress and pass herself off as a boy. This allows Parvana to move around the city and work to provide the money the family need to survive. In a culture where females are forbidden from travelling anywhere alone, this places Parvana in constant danger, but desperate times call for desperate solutions.
Some years the category of Best Animated Feature has some “Also Rans” – The Breadwinner is more than just an Also Ran this year! This feature from Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) is now on Netflix and will have you up late crying your heart out in the dark. Why is The Breadwinner so great? How can middle-grade fiction be grown up? Why did it have to run against Coco this year?? How did an animated movie about the Taliban in Afghanistan not attract more viewers in theaters? How can different animation styles help you differentiate between a story-within-a-story and the main plot? What is Cartoon Saloon doing with design and cinematography in animated features that’s so groundbreaking and intriguing? How can props be used to convey suspense and stakes subtly? What is a movie moral for kids? Why didn’t Mackenzie watch Song of the Sea when he had the chance? ESCUCHEMOS EL EXITO DE Jencarlos Canela y . J.
