In this episode we dive deep into the infamous deep state. We had a great guest to come on and give his perspective of the American government and the elite less than 1% who owns most of the wealth in America. There are aspects of our government and society we should bring to light but the question of absolute corruption is up for you to decide. We do not condone political violence but we don't want people to be apart of the solution.
Maya, the protagonist of Rohit Manchanda's novel The Enclave (Fourth Estate: 2024), should be happy with her life. She's newly single, her net worth steadily rising in the booming India of the 2000s. She has a cushy, if slightly unfulfilling, job in academia. But she struggles: She wants to write, but can't summon the energy to do so. She juggles several relationships, each one slowly imploding as the novel continues. And she butts heads with an oblivious and pompous bureaucrat, nicknamed “The Pontiff.” Rohit Manchanda is a professor at IIT Bombay where he teaches and researches computational neurophysiology. His first novel won a Betty Trask Award, was published with the title In the Light of the Black Sun and was republished in 2024 titled A Speck of Coal Dust. The Enclave is Rohit Manchanda's second novel, coming decades after his first published work. In this episode, Rohit and I talk about his writing career, the themes of The Enclave, and the very real struggle of wanting, but not having the energy, to write. The recently published book “Teleaudiology Today: Remote Assessment and Management of Hearing Loss” provides a practical guide for audiologists looking to adopt telehealth practices. Co-authors Vinaya Manchaiah, PhD, and De Wet Swanepoel, PhD, discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated increased use of teleaudiology for screening, diagnostics, hearing aid fittings, and rehabilitation services. The book reviews equipment, legal considerations, and step-by-step implementation to supplement in-person care with teleaudiology. Drs. Manchanda and Swanepoel explain how hybrid care models allow some components to be offered remotely, providing convenience for tech-savvy patients who want greater control over their care. While research is still needed on which patients do best with teleaudiology, the authors emphasize that the book was structured to provide clinicians with hands-on tools to adopt telepractice, supported by expertise from leaders currently using teleaudiology. Proceeds from sales of the book will help fund research on improving accessibility to ear and hearing healthcare in South Africa. Our Researcher of the Month, Tanya Manchanda, has recently published a review which assesses existing friendship interventions and their impacts on the mental health outcomes of adolescents aged 12–24 years. In this interview, Tanya considers what we know about these interventions, for both the teen who is trained and their friends and reveals that surprisingly few interventions which utilise authentic social groups have been studied, despite their potential for strong results. She talks us through some of the interventions that do exist and outlines key things that schools might like to consider when developing and implementing friendship interventions designed to improve teens' mental health.

Nitasha Manchanda is a genetic scientist, a mother, a wife, a gardener and the creator and host of a podcast series entitled The Indian Edit – exploring the inspiring lives of women of the Indian diaspora – living everywhere from Boston, where Nitasha now makes her home, to Germany, Canada, and even returned to India. Subtitled conversations with innovators in design, culture, and entrepreneurship, The Indian Edit launched in May of 2018. While the podcast is not plant-focused, as a gardener herself - from a family of scientists (including a beloved botanist aunt) and gardeners - Nitasha‘s perspective as host of The Indian Edit is a beautiful illustration of how we all - from spice company founders to sari designers, to photographers - take the vocabulary of our landscapes and plants of origin into the rest of our lives with us, no matter where we go. For Nitasha, that is building (and growing) a creative bridge back to India. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years, and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. I am proud to present Monika Manchanda, Bangalore based food writer & restaurant consultant and Chief Culinary Officer of LiveAltLife, in the latest episode of #FoodocracyForHer. In this chat you will get to hear about how Monika, a former IT professional, took up food blogging in 2008 and then became a home baker before the phrase was even coined. Of how she explored different avenues of blogging and social media till she had her eureka moment when she stepped into a commercial kitchen and discovered her calling as a restaurant/ cafe consultant. You will hear of the self-doubts that she faced during the journey, her battles with the 'imposter syndrome,' the emptiness of the lockdown and of how she then rediscovered herself as the co-founder of LiveAltLife, a health tech startup aimed at helping people reverse lifestyle diseases with a focus on diabetes. You will find Monika at her candid best here. I found her life's journey as a food social media denizen and the tips that she shared to be most enlightening. As I am sure will you. #FoodocracyForHer by Kalyan Karmakar is India's longest running podcast featuring women entrepreneurs in the food and beverage business. Please share the episode so that more people can know about the story and share it, click on like as it helps the video be discovered and please do subscribe to the channel to catch future episodes of the podcast. #indianfood #foodblogger #foodinfluencer #bangalorefood #hombaker #finelychoppedTV

On this episode of The Shape of Work podcast, we have Angad Singh Manchanda, Chief Executive Officer of Chimp&z Inc, a digital marketing agency.Having worked as an entrepreneur for the last eight years, he shares his journey from working at a digital marketing agency to running his own.In addition to some actionable employer branding tips for HR professionals, he also covers:How digitalisation has one-upped the HRChimp&z's #PrideOfAdvertising campaignWhy entertaining content needs to be a part of any marketing strategyThe little things that make remote employees feel appreciatedDigitalization transforming the recruiting process:In the past one and a half years, no company interviewed candidates face to face. They are paying less attention to their appearance or behavior. It was only possible due to the tech tools which are now used in every organization. Angad feels that this change was needed. This change was supposed to happen five years ago. Digitalization has helped improve the hiring process, review systems, and a lot more. It enabled people to conveniently work in the comfort of their homes without the hassle of traveling. The significance of Diversity and Inclusion:According to Angad, inclusion and diversity should come to an organization naturally. It should not be created through external means. The significance this concept is achieving was long pending too. People from all communities deserve acceptance at their workplace. Organizations need to let their people know that there are equal opportunities available for everyone. Angad feels that inclusion is beneficial not only from a cultural perspective but also from a business perspective. More diversity offers more profits and productivity as well. There are plenty of companies taking the initiative towards better diversity and inclusion.A creative take on employer branding:Angad feels that employer branding can be a more entertaining process. Employer branding has always been a serious conversation. Thus companies should try and adapt some fun and quirky ideas for the same purpose. Communicating easily and bringing a smile to the audience's face is definitely a better option for the companies. Employees and companies have a complex relationship similar to B2C communication. A company needs to put itself in an employee's position and then communicate. It allows for better understanding from both sides. The progress that remote work has made in India:According to Angad, working from home in India is too far to make a positive impact. However, the companies are achieving good progress. Companies need to be empathetic towards their employees. They are having a lot of trouble working from home too. Companies should focus on encouraging work-life balance. Thus work from home is a great idea, but India is still a few years behind to make it flawless. Apart from these minor issues, companies are evolving to adapt to these changes. Certain steps like 1v1 conversations with the employees, sessions with psychologists and doctors can be helpful. Work from home has given India the alignment that it needed.Follow Angad on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Yashwanth Jembige
Over time and across different genres, Afghanistan has been presented to the world as potential ally, dangerous enemy, gendered space, and mysterious locale. These powerful, if competing, visions seek to make sense of Afghanistan and to render it legible. In Imagining Afghanistan: The History and Politics of Imperial Knowledge (Cambridge University Press, 2020), Nivi Manchanda, Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London, uncovers and critically explores Anglophone practices of knowledge cultivation and representational strategies, and argues that Afghanistan occupies a distinctive place in the imperial imagination: over-determined and under-theorised, owing largely to the particular history of imperial intervention in the region. Focusing on representations of gender, state and tribes, Manchanda re-historicizes and de-mythologizes the study of Afghanistan through a sustained critique of colonial forms of knowing and demonstrates how the development of pervasive tropes in Western conceptions of Afghanistan have enabled Western intervention, invasion and bombing in the region from the nineteenth century to the present. In our conversation we discussed Afghanistan as a discursive regime, the imperial politics of knowledge production, modern myths about Afghanistan, the narratives of the “Great Game” and the “Graveyard of Empires,” the role of the native informant, the failed state, the “War on Terror,” the representation of the “Afghan woman” and Afghan masculinities, and a genealogy of the term “tribe.” Kristian Petersen is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies at Old Dominion University. You can find out more about his work on his website, follow him on Twitter @BabaKristian, or email him at kpeterse@odu.edu.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) systems are increasingly being used across all sectors and societies. Alongside this growth, model fairness has been gaining awareness over the past years. This field aims to assess how fair the model is when treating pre-existing biases in data. Fairness in machine learning is an exciting and vibrant area of research and discussion among academics, practitioners, and the broader public. The goal is to understand and prevent unjust or prejudicial treatment of people related to race, income, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and other characteristics historically associated with discrimination and marginalization, when and where they manifest in algorithmic systems or algorithmically aided decision-making. AI systems are enabling new experiences and abilities for people around the globe. Beyond recommending books and television shows, AI systems can be used for more critical tasks, such as predicting the presence and severity of a medical condition, matching people to jobs and partners, or identifying if a person is crossing the street. Such computerized assistive or decision-making systems have the potential to be fairer and more inclusive at a broader scale than decision-making processes based on ad hoc rules or human judgments. The risk is that any unfairness in such systems can also have a wide-scale impact. Thus, as the impact of AI increases across sectors and societies, it is critical to work towards systems that are fair and inclusive for all.Simi Manchandahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/sweetee-simi-m-0189861b/The Data Standardhttps://datastandard.io/https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-data-standard/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTuolowXD05RY9DkIWqRT6Q

Quote: “Where do you want to start?” —Farhad Azad About: Afghanistan has far too often been referred to as a place where countries go to die, it is a graveyard of empires. This moniker has been cited so many times and for so long that it’s unclear who first said it. Even the Afghan community will recite this pride. But what a title like this fails to convey is that while this might be a country responsible for the many tombstones of others, it very well is also a moratorium of progress for itself, a state in perpetual arrested development. This is also a cemetery for countless Afghans who, in more modern times, failed to see any empire rise. Why do some countries get to debate their histories while others have their legacy determined by outsiders? And what gets lost along the way? This is Part II of a multi-part story on how history, current events, and culture all complicate the Afghan identity. As palavras de Jesus me fazem pensar. Onde estou vivendo?

WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: December 15, 2016 Featuring: Rishi Manchanda, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer, The Wonderful Company; President & Founder, HealthBegins WIHI is pleased to present a Special Edition Podcast, featuring Rishi Manchanda of HealthBegins, discussing why it’s important for health care to “move upstream” to address the social determinants contributing to many patients’ poor health today. Dr. Manchanda also argues that if frontline providers are asked to address upstream factors like poor housing or job insecurity, they need to have the resources and the knowledge and the active partnerships to draw from. Otherwise, they’re at risk for burnout and anything but joy in work. This is why Dr. Manchanda and some others suggest we consider expanding the IHI Triple Aim to the “Quadruple Aim” to include critically important job satisfaction. WIHI recorded Dr. Manchanda’s remarks on December 5, 2016, in Orlando, Florida, at the Scientific Symposium, held in conjunction with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 28th Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care. The podcast is over an hour long; we highly recommend that you have the presentation slides (posted on this page) handy for reference as you’re listening. At the conclusion of Dr. Manchanda’s remarks, IHI’s Dr. Don Goldmann moderates a brief Q&A.

Akaash makes his long awaited return to my arms in this latest episode. He regales us with how annoying brown folk are in Italy and I sing him an amazing version of Happy Birthday. As soon as we are done with the pillow talk, we dive into our thoughts of the last few episodes. which mainly consists of us just shouting out how amazing Anish, Diana, and Dr. Manchanda are. Then I take us down to Twitter Valley and we respond to you guys! Been some amazing twitter involvement the last few weeks and we get a chance to respond to it all...we even learn a new word...on air! Akaash then wraps us up with an incredibly sweet and powerful email from a woman who had an intense response to Dr. Manchanda's episode. Also, a question: Do you guys feel anxious when you're not connected to your phone?
In part one of our love affair with Dr. Manchanda we dove into what was the concept behind going "upstream." So for part 2 the big question became: "OK, so how do we do this?" Our conversation continues right from where we left off last week answering that question. We ask about the very nature of humanity as being reactionary and whether that needs to change first for any other shit to occur. We explore how upstream thinking can be used in other realms of society, which leads to a spirited discussion of Trump, Bernie Sanders, and our political system in general. Finally we implement upstream thinking to deal with a real life situation: Obesity. Dr. Manchanda walks us through how an upstream-ist system would affect the way we deal with that issue and in the process blows our mind by letting us know that a calorie is not a calorie....Yea. This episode gets nuts. So nuts that Akaash nearly pees his pants. You won't want to miss this episode.
