Welcome to 3 Bad Brothers, A Beastie Boys Breakdown. For the next 8 weeks, the Dad Bod Rap Pod crew and some special guests will be going album by album through the Beastie Boys' career. This week we are focused on Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D's first album, the wildly successful Licensed To Ill with insight from Dante Ross, who ran in the same circles as the Boys at this formative time in their lives. We will track the band from punk shows to NYC nightclubs, to arena tours, examining their rhymes, beats, cultural impact and more through discussion, interviews, and then score each album on a system we affectionately call the Rick Rubric. Licensed to Ill is thought of as one of rap music's early masterpieces, so we re-listen to the seminal album to see how it holds up nearly 40 years later as rap music, as the beginning of a vast and exploratory career, and as a product of early Def Jam Records, the so-called nerve center of the nascent hip-hop industry at the time. Huge thanks to Dante Ross for joining us to provide cultural context and crack jokes. Please tune in next week when we step through the doors of the cult classic Paul's Boutique. Now that we've been around for a number of years, we've had the chance to interact with rappers and producers at various stages of their careers. Sometimes we catch people on the ascent, still forging their legacy, and sometimes we speak to legends whose time influencing the culture is likely behind them. And sometimes, we engage with early-career artists right as they begin to level up and make a name for themselves to a wider audience. We have seen this happen with friends of the program like Defcee and Fatboi Sharif, and this week we have a conversation with rapper NAHreally and producer The Expert, who feel like they are on the verge of a similar breakthrough. They are promoting their new collaborative album Blip! out now on Rucksack Records. For NAH, this is his first release on vinyl, his first foray into securing features from other indie artists he admires, and just a lot of firsts in general. For producer The Expert, this is the latest in a line of collab albums, including recent tomes with Stik Figa and Jermicide, where he has consistently displayed a knack for psych-tinged knocking beats. In the bookending segments, DBRP hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc (Demone Carter is on assignment his week) discuss new music, an upcoming book project they are both working on, and the concept of "Regular Guy Rap" and what makes an artist relatable in the modern world of hip-hop. This episode was mixed by Taylor Weng. Theme song by Cutso and DEM ONE. Announcements by Don Newkirk. Dad Bod Rap Pod is brought to you by Stony Island Audio. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). Main Body of Discussion (2:06). The ability to have tough conversations about complex topics is an art. It requires not only a great deal of nuanced knowledge on a topic to speak thoughtfully on it, but it also requires a great deal of self-awareness and empathy. On The Golem of Brooklyn OST, Defcee successfully has one of these tough conversations with the community of white Jewish people he is a part of. He uses Adam Mansbach's new novel as inspiration to depict thoughtful, and funny stories related to Jewish ideals and folklore in a contemporary context. Furthermore, Defcee levies criticisms that he has for his people, delivered from a place of love and understanding. This concept is bolstered by the mystical, tone-setting instrumentals from the one and only Messiah Musik, who joins me alongside Defcee to dig deep into the makings of one of the best albums of the year, bar none. Vast differences in how The Golem of Brooklyn was created vs. Trapdoor (3:48). Main themes of Adam Mansbach's novel, and what inspired the soundtrack's creation (8:18).  Adam Mansbach's involvement in the creative process of the soundtrack (15:55). How the concept shaped Messiah's approach to the soundtrack's sound (18:13). The important conversation Defcee wanted to have with the Jewish community on The Golem of Brooklyn (22:50). The timing of sharing these perspectives related to Judaism and whiteness, given the context of the heightened attention on anti-Semitism in the current socio-political climate (30:46). What Defcee and Messiah took away from The Golem creative process, as it relates to their experience as white Jewish people (39:19). How much of The Golem of Brooklyn was based on the content of the book vs. personal experience (44:22). Favourite songs (45:53). This week, Features co-director Mick R speaks with Chicago rapper and poetry teacher, Adam Levin aka Defcee. They discuss the parallels between poetry and hip hop, the genesis of the style of his flow, his influences, his dream collaboration with producer Blockhead, and the naming of his album For All Debts Public and Private. "I just wanted to be honest and open about those struggles I have as well, because I can be as superhuman as I want to be on the microphone, but at the end of the day, if I'm not being vulnerable in my music as well, there's nothing to distinguish it from the next rapper who thinks they're the best out there." - Defcee Photo Credit: Michael Salisbury Produced by Jessi D.

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Hook (0:21). Main Body of Discussion (1:56). As a fan of music, one of my favourite things to witness is an artist that I love have their breakthrough moment... where their peers, or listeners truly give them the respect they deserve. For BLOODBLIXING and his latest album, NBA STREETZ: GANGSTA EDITION, it was a little bit of both. With a feature list running the gamut from the likes of Rahiem Supreme, Defcee, Vic Spencer, AJ Suede, and motherfucking billy woods, it is clear that other fellow great artists in the game are recognizing BLOODBLIXING's talent. Couple the impressive guest list with a fan response that has not felt nearly as positive as it has with this latest record, NBA STREETZ is surely a milestone achievement in BLOODBLIXING's career. In my opinion, this album is the definitive BLOODBLIXING experience, which is why I'm pleased to have BLOODBLIXING re-join the show as the first repeat guest we've ever had, to deep-dive into this record in the second installment of the Album Alchemy series. This week we have an interview with Chicago's Defcee, a deeply lyrical MC who just released a project with prolific producer August Fanon called We Dressed the City with Our Names. Defcee is a student of hip-hop culture, an educator, as well as a poetic rapper who puts a lot of care into his rhymes and we really enjoyed talking with him. In the opening segment our three hosts break down album of the year contender Pray For Haiti from Mach-Hommy. We also discuss some of our favorite rappers from Chicago, each choosing at least four artists to form 'Mt Rushmore' lists of our favorites. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the JASON GRIFF interview session! If you’ve done any history on hip-hop (you should have - if not, time to start NOW), you know the NYC hip-hop, punk & art scenes all thrived off one another in it’s early days, and Griff is delivering his version of that experience this week via his producer concept album, “FIRESIDE CHATS.” Griff breaks down how punk, hip-hop and a world renowned Chicago bowling alley, FIRESIDE BOWL, provided the inspiration for his latest endeavor on INSUBORDINATE RECORDS, which features SCORCESE (RIP). ALEX LUDOVICO, JUGANAUT, ALASKA, ZILLA ROCCA, CURLY CASTRO, BILLY WOODS and DEFCEE. We also catch up with Griff on what else we can expect from the Insubordinate Records crew this year and the work they have vowed to carry on since Scorcese’s unexpected passing at the top of 2020. After you’re done listening to this, head to Ep293 for some exclusives off “Fireside Chats” until the album drops on Fri May 21!
