Excited to cover a very unique style of music that was invented in the US capitol, Washington D.C....Go-Go or as some call it Go-Go Funk. My connection with Go-Go started in '83-‘84 when I got my first Trouble Funk record. I was instantly hooked on that raw power…heavily inspired by 70s funk and latin percussions. Since than I have been collecting any go-go record that I can possibly find…and still goin'... I can only say that it can't get funkier than this. So... turn off the TV, stop listening to the news, and get down with your get down...enjoy

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ FRANKIE FONCETT # 046 - PART 1 We are joined by the legendary London UK Dj Frankie Foncett. His Caribbean roots come from the island of Trinidad. His start in music was in the 1970s being introduced to groups such as Commanded, James Brown and the JB's, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye. His cousin Tony had a huge hand in helping Frankie learn about disco, bringing mix tapes back from New York City Radio Station, Disco 92 WKTU with DJ Ted Currier in the mix. Frankie also talks about how important Reggae sound was in the days of the early night clubs and how the music with its heavy bass lent to the excitement of the Carnival sound and the dub culture. Rapper Kurtis Blow, DJ Davy DMX was also a huge inspiration with his hip hop mixes around 1982 with his style of cutting and scratching. During this time this is where he meets a young DJ Paul Trouble Anderson who at the time was known as "Trouble Funk". Frankie begins as the warm up dj at the Electric Ballroom for Paul Trouble. As his time in London starts to begin in the music business he picks up jobs at record shops and ends up at Black Market Records and here he becomes famous with all the DJ's of the time being able to take care of them with their rare grooves.
Composer, filmmaker and musician Liza Figueroa Kravinsky gives us an in-depth look into the official music of DC - GoGo. Having composed the original "GoGo Symphony" - a blend of go-go music with classical compositions, Liza founded the GoGo Symphony Ensemble to perform the number and other original songs. Hear her unique and interesting story from working with Prince and well known GoGo bands like Trouble Funk and Robin Power's Uptown Dames in this podcast. Also get insight into how GoGo evolved and its links to pop and funk music.

Cassettes ring different for me. I bought them. I had them (needed tunes to drive to when I got a car) but we used them to listen to go-go music (DC girl) or to record music from the radio. The latter was memorable because there were a couple of trips I took to visit relatives in NYC. Boom Boxes and hip-hop were the thing, so I had to record this music I was hearing from the radio as it was different from what we were listening to in DC.*You can also get a taste of go-go in episode 27 A Good Beat (Pump Me Up, E Flat Boogie, Trouble Funk, 1982)*CD? Alan Parkes is a PhD student in US history at the University of Delaware. He studies the impact of neo-liberalization on late-twentieth-century youth cultures. He is a member of California’s hardcore punk band Empty Eyes. In the early 1980s, Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye, two young Washington DC punks, heard a song that, as Rollins recalls, “was so good that we pulled over just so we could listen to it without having to deal with traffic.” They waited to hear the radio DJ announce the song title after it ended. Rollins remembers, “the lady said that was ‘‘Pump Me Up’ by Trouble Funk,’ and Ian and I looked at each other and instantly came to the same conclusion: that is the beat we’ve been waiting to hear for our entire lives.” The go-go sounds of Trouble Funk and the hardcore punk created by Rollins, as a member of DC band SOA, and MacKaye as a singer of Minor Threat, while at seemingly opposite ends of musical taste, expose a distinctiveness in DC music-making that marked the 1980s and, more significantly, provide a basis for understanding the complexities of community formation in the teeth of rising neoliberal cultural influence. Alan argues that as a consequence of their emphasis on a localized do-it-yourself ethos, go-go and hardcore punk fostered an alternative to neoliberal cultural structures through music-centred community formation. He says, while go-go scene members constructed a community in response to DC’s postindustrial and political climate as well as a history of black suppression in the US, Washington hardcore punk scene members created a community informed largely by its counterparts in cities across the US and abroad but that nonetheless became distinctly identified with DC. Alan expresses that the beat that Rollins and MacKaye had waited to hear and the subculture they helped form exposes both the weaknesses and entrenched influence of prevailing neoliberal thought that defined the 1980s. During this quarantine, we have seen different facets of peoples personalities. A good example are these "Verzuz" battles. Apparently, singer Monica has turned down a Verzuz battle with Brandy. Brandi and Monica were pit against each other in the 90's. Find out what the crew things about this situation! In related news, Swizz Beatz calls on Jermaine Dupri to help set up a battle featuring 112 and Jagged Edge. Both Jagged Edge and 112 rose to national prominence in the mid-1990s. Who do you think will take this one?? Bow Wow is considering retiring after next album. Apparently, he wants to focus more on his daughter, Shai and create a daddy/daughter entertainment duo. Shai is the daughter of the Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta star shares with Joie Chavez -- who also has a son with rapper Future. Will y'all miss Bow's music? Political observers have long noted that President Donald Trump and his rise to power came on the heels of his freewheeling and often contentious stances against his political opposition. In recent weeks, the divide has grown as chatter is brewing that Trump may elect not to unveil his predecessor President Barack Obama‘s presidential portrait, which would disrupt a decades-log tradition. Leave it up to your President! TV One celebrates Black Music month and the sound of DC with a Go-Go documentary, "The Beat Don't Stop." Airing, Sunday, June 21st at 8 pm ET, The Beat Don’t Stop pays homage to the unique contribution of Go-go music to the musical landscape. It features a host of celebrities, artists, music historians, and community leaders including rapper Doug E. Fresh; band members from Junk Yard Band, Trouble Funk, E.U., Backyard Band, TOB, TCB and Maiesha and the Hip Huggers; the dance crew Beat Ya Feet Finest; music historians Dr. Natalie Hopkinson and Kato Hammond; music journalists Ericka Blount and Alona Wartofsky; Don’t Mute DC organizer Ron Moten; talent promoter and former MCA Records executive Bo Sampson; music producer Tone P; Radio One Personality Angie Ange; DJ Flexx; hip hop artist DJ Kool; and many others. This is exciting, as it has been long overdue. For the "HOT TAKE" topic this week the crew discussed 'bad quarantine habits couples may develop.' We expanded on what we discussed last week. Drop a comment on your thoughts.
Guest host Tracy Wilson (of Dahlia Seed and Positive No) joins Bob and Mike to play French pop from Charlotte Leslie, a Peel session track from '70s mods New Hearts, and Swedish indie punks Love Is All. Meanwhile Bob and Mike play tracks from The Records, Trouble Funk, Naked Raygun, Scritti Politti, Trash Kit, and The Weather Prophets. Other topics include record stores like Pier Platters in Hoboken and Plan 9 in Richmond, seeing shows at Maxwell's, why Mike rarely bought imports in high school, and when Bob toured with Pete Kember from Spacemen 3.

The crew this week discussed some experiences that span from sports to entertainment with good and bad fanfare. Police in Chicago are investigating a shocking attack against "Empire" star Jussie Smollet last night as a hate crime. Two people beat Jussie, poured an unknown chemical on him and wrapped a rope around his neck, while yelling homophobic slurs at the openly gay actor/activist. The men struck Jussie in the face, wrapped a rope around his neck and poured the substance on him, before fleeing the scene. This sort of violence is beginning to get out of hand. On a much more positive note,Hip-Hop’s first pop hit is turning 40 this year and a new exhibit is celebrating the rich history of the revolutionary culture. Hip-Hop Museum Pop-Up Experience, hosted in Washington D.C., offers a journey through Hip-Hop’s origins with rappers Melle Mel, Busy Bee, The Sugarhill Gang, Large Professor, band Trouble Funk and a sold out crowd. The Hip-Hop Museum Pop-Up Experience can be found at 700 Delaware Ave. SW from noon to 6 p.m. daily until Feb. 18. It is also Free. You've GOT to check this one out!! After two male dancers made the squad for the 2018 season, the LA Rams will continue to make history when Quinton Peron and Napoleon Jinnies appear as the first male cheerleaders to ever perform at a Super Bowl this weekend. When Peron and Jinnies take the field with the 38 other cheerleaders on their team however this game filled with firsts will go down in history for breaking the stigma that cheerleading is a female sport. I'm not sure how to feel out this one?? Academy Award nominated "Black Panther" returns to the big screen to celebrate Black History Month for a one-week engagement, February 1-7th and it's FREE! Check out your local listings! We also had in studio this week, upcoming rapper "I$H I$H". He making major moves! Check him out everywhere @bigishpoppin.
