Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week's conversation comes in two parts. Like it's geographical spread, northern hemisphere to southern hemisphere, think of this two part discussion as a way of engaging both hemispheres of your brain--the creative and the analytic. My guest is fellow Stanford alum and founder of The Jazz & Democracy Project® (J&D) (https://www.jazzdemocracy.com), Wesley “Dr. Wes” J. Watkins. After several years working in the education sector, Dr. Wes launched the program in November 2009 at Rosa Parks Elementary School, located in San Francisco's historic Fillmore District. J&D is a music integrated curriculum that utilizes jazz as a metaphor to bring democracy to life, enrich the study and teaching of history, government, civics and culture, and inspire youth to become active, positive contributors to their communities. He first proposed the curriculum as part of his undergraduate honors program at Stanford's School of Education and later conducted research for his undergraduate honors thesis at Oxford University where he engaged and learned from music educators at both local elementary schools and world renowned secondary institutions. Now based in Sydney, Australia, J&D has traveled to countries all over the world and, in these times of global social transition, Dr. Wes anticipates continued opportunities to feature and further innovate using tools that will leave lasting impact on the ways that youth and educators approach building and living in their communities and beyond. Independent singer, songwriter and producer, Madison McFerrin has deep roots in music. Her grandfather Robert McFerrin Sr. was the first Black man to sing with the Metropolitan Opera. Her grandmother, Sara McFerrin, is a classically trained vocalist who toured as a background singer for Sam Cooke. And of course, there's Madison's father, Bobby McFerrin, the Grammy-winning jazz vocalist. Yet, Madison has found a way to distinguish herself with a sound all her own. Madison and Isa Nakazawa discuss how after a life-altering break up and growing her career, Madison has learned to embody the soft core of her Scorpio sun.

Imposter syndrome is super common amongst womxn and nonbinary artists, especially when it comes to taking the reins in the recording studio. What we will learn today is that even when you grow up knowing that music is in your DNA and is a possible career path for you and/or your innate talent and passion gets you into one of the best music schools in the country, that doesn't necessarily spare you from struggles with self confidence, or escaping the challenges of navigating music's male dominated spaces and industry. Madison McFerrin was born in 1992, the daughter of Grammy-winning vocalist and songwriter Bobby McFerrin, and granddaughter of Robert McFerrin, Sr., the first black man to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, this singer, songwriter and producer first put out a pair of independently released, a-cappella-based EP's called Finding Foundations Vol. I in 2016, Vol II in 2018, and then began to flesh out her sound on the 2019 EP You + I, a collaboration with her brother, musician/producer Taylor McFerrin. In today's conversation, we'll hear how Madison overcame her own imposter syndrome, took the production reins, and made her most fully realized album to date, I Hope You Can Forgive Me.
Happy Summer! We're stepping into your feed to share a conversation Tonya recently had with singer, songwriter, and producer Madison McFerrin. Madison has been on her own liberation journey the last few years, and it's evident with her new album “I Hope You Can Forgive Me." Tonya had her music on loop while writing Season 5 of Truth Be Told about using psychedelics to heal racial trauma, so you know we had to have her on the show!
Today, we hear singer-songwriter Madison McFerrin talk about her San Francisco roots, musical influences, and journey. Then, we hear from another musical family — father and son psychedelic rock duo Lester and Dylan Chambers talk about their bond, struggles and the power of music. And, we hear a reading from a Bay Area poet.
More than 6 years after her first EP, Madison McFerrin has made her full-length debut with the album, I Hope You Can Forgive Me. The vocalist and producer joins us live in studio five to perform. She will be at Zone One in Brooklyn on Thursday, June 29.
Los Angeles-based singer Madison McFerrin debuted her first full-length album, ‘I Hope You Can Forgive Me' on May 12, exploring fear and growth while evolving into her identity. Going on a world tour last year with her father, jazz icon Bobby McFerrin, was only the beginning of her touring journey; currently, she is on the road in support of the new album, and will be in Chicago on June 13. In an interview with Vocalo afternoons host Nudia Hernandez, she discusses her single “God Herself,” and what that song means for both her and her audience. The two also delve into how Madison's family name has an influence on her personal brand, and how she finds herself through music. This interview was conducted and edited by Nudia Hernandez for Nudia in the Afternoons. It originally aired on Thursday, June 8 during Nudia in the Afternoons on Vocalo 91.1 FM. Keep up with Madison by following her on Instagram at @madmcferrin.

The guys welcome monumentally talented singer Madison McFerrin to the podcast, to discuss her first album and why the hell she's so damn popular on one deep-cut app in China! But first, the Dodgers LGBT Pride Day controversy might have been diffused, but that won't keep the guys from bickering about it along largely predictable ideological lines (Brent = pragmatically liberal, Alan = boring!) And finally, the guys dish on Disney remakes and whether The Little Mermaid reboot has any potential. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Madison McFerrin is a singer, songwriter, and producer from New York. She's sung with legends like Aretha Franklin, George Clinton, and De La Soul & The Roots. Madison's first EP came out in 2016, and last week, she released her debut album, I Hope You Can Forgive Me. In the years between the EP and the album, Madison started producing her own music. It wasn't really her plan, but something that developed over the course of the pandemic. For this episode, I talked to Madison about a song from her album called “Run." It was inspired by the discovery that she's the descendant of a woman who escaped slavery, and features guest vocals from Madison's father, Grammy-winner Bobby McFerrin. Gregg Tilston and Karim Kanji welcome to the show for the second time, Paul Chin! In the wake of Beyoncé and fellow Toronto artist Drake releasing their own dance projects, heralding a reclamation of electronic music for Black artists at the highest heights of the industry, Paul Chin begins the rollout of his own complementary offering in his full-length debut And Under Heaven We Are All Made Of Water, which exhibits the forward-thinking sonic ambition of the underground as he explores themes of Afrofuturism, equity, and renewal; reflecting on what it means to be a co-habitant of the planet we all live on. Brand New Moon, the first single from the album sees Chin and Madison McFerrin connect for an otherworldly, and community-minded rebuke of the intergalactic ambitions of billionaires Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Sir Richard Branson, resisting false “prospects of prosperity”. McFerrin – daughter of vocal jazz icon Bobby McFerrin – flexes her birthright as an architect of luscious layered R&B vocals, gliding effortlessly over glassy production that eventually transforms into a bold trunk-rattler for an Earthbound resistance. Brand New Moon will be available on all marketplaces and DSPs October 26th, 2022. Released via The Nautilus Foundation, distributed by Alpha Pup.
Poppy Ajudha, Maverick Sabre and Madison McFerrin discuss how much they try to cater to an audience when songwriting, the backlash that can come from political and social comment in songs, and the complexities of expressing their identities through music. Poppy Ajudha is a singer-songwriter from London, UK whose music fuses pop, jazz, soul and R n' B with politically-charged lyrics. Her songs have received over 25 million streams and in 2019 she featured in Barack Obama's Best of the Year playlist. Maverick Sabre is a platinum-selling London-born Irish singer, songwriter and rapper. After being nominated for a BRIT Award in 2011, he's gone on to collaborate with the likes of Jorja Smith, Akala, and former Music Life guest Kojaque. Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer Madison McFerrin was born into a family of celebrated vocalists, but has forged her own career in music, creating a sound which seminal producer Questlove dubbed "soul-appella".
Blending jazzy soul with beats, seductive songsmith Madison McFerrin shares “Stay Away (From Me).” Showcasing her newly-acquired production chops, the song encapsulates our feelings during lockdown while alleviating some of the anxiety.
