Today on Too Opinionated, we share a drink with actor/director Ted Lange! After appearing in the film Black Belt Jones in 1974, he portrayed Junior on the series That's My Mama before landing the role of the ship's bartender, Isaac, on The Love Boat in 1977, opposite Gavin MacLeod. In the early 1980s, following a letter of recommendation from Lynn Redgrave (whom he met on an episode of The Love Boat), Lange attended a summer school at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to perfect his Shakespeare acting skills. After he left the show in 1987, Lange appeared in various films and in guest roles on 227, In the Heat of the Night, Evening Shade, Boy Meets World, The King of Queens, Scrubs, Drake & Josh, Psych, The Cleveland Show, and Are We There Yet?. Ted's classical background as well as his years before the camera have enabled him to become known as an actor's director inspiring not only emotional but also comedic scenes. His four-camera directing expertise includes sixty episodes for Entertainment Studios', The First Family and Mr. Box Office, and twelve episodes of Are We There Yet?, for Executive Producer, Ali Leroi. His one-camera directing experience is showcased in the independent films, Othello and For Love of Amy as well as the one-camera television comedies, The New Gidget and The Brothers Garcia for Universal. The Fall Guy and Mike Hammer exemplify his directorial work in action shows.   Want to watch: Youtube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

We don't always recognize that our lived experience has meaning. Meaning to us, yes. But, it can also benefit the betterment of mankind. That's what peer work is. Using our lived experience to benefit others, should they need it. Chosen Reject , Phillip Fleming knows the power of peer support and hears its music.  This week Above Ground Podcast episode one hundred ninety. We are joined by Phillip Fleming for our first of two innerviews to celebrate Black History month. Phillip is a member of the Board of Directors and a Peer Specialist at Fountain House, an ordained minister, and the Recording Secretary at New York Association of Black Psychologists. Phillip spreads his knowledge and on the way out drops the mic.  Kurt Cobain shouted that the kids were the chosen rejects and when Phillip first heard that, he knew he belonged somewhere. Phillip just needed to find his place. “You're free to take off the label like you take off a coat!” Says Phillip about the labels that stigma adorns us with. Falling To Pieces

Missing pieces of the puzzle can cause it all to fall apart.  You can create new puzzle pieces. Connecting the pieces can make a beautiful picture. The displaying of the picture takes epoxy, a frame and care. One misstep can cause the pieces to fall, and when falling to pieces, is it a piece that we are missing or have we put pieces together in the wrong order? This week on episode one hundred eighty nine the guys discuss the pieces of the helping yourself puzzle. Putting yourself back together is a do it yourself, no one is going to save you project. The wisdom to be gained is outside, but integrating it is an inside job. Just like gasoline is only potential power and unless you pour it into a combustion engine it won't do what it is intended to do.  This we week we also mention the fine art of kintsugi. This technique of repairing broken pottery is an extension of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the philosophy of finding the beauty in transience, imperfection and simplicity. This great article from the blog, The Conversation will help you understand.  Some questions to ponder this week; what pieces are you missing? What pieces no longer fit? Is ignorance really bliss when the pieces are falling apart? What do you recognize that no longer fits and are you ready to create new pieces? Does healing ever end? Thanks for listening to episode one hundred eighty nine of Above Ground Podcast. We appreciate you listening . Please support our endeavors by sharing, reviewing and following. Recovery is never a straight line. Things we do to comfort ourselves can create the most uncomfortable outcomes. But us humans can overcome even the most difficult situations and with good bones we can reanimate the animal within. Welcome to episode one seventy eight of Above Ground Podcast. This week we are joined by Mike Langone. Mike is the singer for Nippertown based band Black Belt Jones, the promoter of Upstate Punk Rock Flea Market and the bone artist behind Odds, Sweet Things and Dead Ends. "You can't focus so much on why, it's more like how I can make things better", says Langone about his struggles with addiction. Langone made his way to Nippertown via the Lower East Side of Manhattan more than twenty years ago.  Langone took his experience and turned it into a career. First as a CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) and now as a Housing Specialist for an Albany, NY based non-profit who helps the homeless population.  Langone expresses how much his life has changed from living the life of an addict. His vulnerability and choosing to live has provided him a way to stay busy as an artist of the living and the dead.  https://blackbeltjones.bandcamp.com/album/ep https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrzNMmkBJSw https://www.facebook.com/people/Upstate-Punk-Rock-Flea-Market/100076174182021/ https://www.facebook.com/people/Odds-Sweet-Things-And-Dead-Ends/100045470088401/ https://www.facebook.com/BlackBeltJonesAlbany Thanks for listening to this week's episode of Above Ground Podcast. "Healing doesn't happen when we're muscling through it", says our guest Melissa Spaulding. Melissa is a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and EMDR Practitioner based in Utah, and is our guest for episode one seventy six of Above Ground Podcast.  Melissa Spaulding is a CMHC at Guided Wellness Counseling of George, Utah. Melissa's mission is to help women move past their past and to live an adventurous life. Melissa helps women work through trauma, depression and anxiety.  One tool in Melissa's arsenal is EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitazation & Reprocessesing. This mode of therapy allows the receiptient to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in their brains. There are three brains; the head, the heart and the body and as Bessel van der Kolk taught us,  the body keeps the score.  Melissa looks at our memories like sticky notes. When we think of sticky notes they are usually so you can take a number or name or notation. Something imortant at the time, but may not be necessary to hold on to long term. That's where EMDR comes in. It helps you clear the mental sticky notes and stop holding on to memories that no longer require you to hold on to them.  Melissa Spaulding can be found at guidedwellnesscounselingut.com. I had the pleasure of speaking with esteemed actor and minister, Mel Novak. I knew he was a talented actor – I did not know he was a prison and skid row minister. Mel was set to be an athlete, however, fate had other plans for him, and he has had over 28 surgeries and he is a cancer survivor. He is divorced, and raised his two daughters alone. As an actor, Mel made his film debut in two 1970’s films – Truck Turner (with Isaac Hayes) and Black Belt Jones (with Jim Kelly). He then went on the work with Yul Brynner and Sybil Danning. Mel has worked on more than 64 films, and in 2021 he has at least 4 films on the horizon. Mel was the hitman “Stick” in the 1978 film Game of Death with Bruce Lee. How many times does anyone get to be the Bruce Lee hitman? After that, he worked with Chuck Norris on two films. More importantly, Mel talked about his calling as a prison minister and working on skid row. He says he several huge trash bags (no he is not throwing them out) of letters from prisoners, letting him know how he changed their lives. I’ve posted his Wikipedia link below. Mel is so interesting – cannot wait to do episode two! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Novak --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michelemarotta/support

Already an experienced session player, by the late 1960s funk guitar icon Dennis Coffey became a member of the Funk Brothers studio band.He played on dozens of recordings for Motown Records, and introduced a hard rock guitar sound to Motown record producer Norman Whitfield's recordings, including distortion, Echoplex tape-loop delay, and wah-wah; most notably heard on "Cloud Nine," "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" and "Psychedelic Shack" by The Temptations. He played on numerous other hit records of the era including No. 1 singles like Edwin Starr's "War," Diana Ross & The Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" and Freda Payne's No. 3 hit (No. 1 in the U.K.) "Band of Gold."In 1971, Coffey recorded "Scorpio," a million-selling instrumental single that peaked in the U.S. at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The instrumental track featured former Motown "funk brother" Bob Babbitt on bass. On Jan. 8, 1972, Coffey became the first white artist to perform on TV's Soul Train, playing "Scorpio." That record received a gold disc awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America in December 1971.The follow-up in 1972 was "Taurus," both credited to Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band. Since then, he has recorded several solo albums, most of them for the Sussex and Westbound labels. While at Sussex Records, Coffey arranged and produced along with Mike Theodore the million-selling "Nice To Be With You" by the group Gallery. In addition, Coffey scored the blaxploitation film, Black Belt Jones (1974).Coffey was interviewed in the 2002 film, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, which told the story of Funk Brothers and explained that he had sold his Fender Stratocaster to buy a Gibson Firebird after he heard Eddie Willis of Funk Brothers play it during a Motown session. In 2004, he published a memoir, Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstars. Coffey was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame as a member of the Funk Brothers in 2010 and as a solo artist in 2018.He recounts most of it here, as well as his still active performing schedule and 2019's jazz album, Down by the River.RECORDED FEBRUARY 2020Get your copy of "Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk" today! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1541256603/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1541256603&linkCode=as2&tag=funknstuff-20&linkId=b6c7558ddc7f8fc9fe440c5d9f3c4008

Why should you care about Marc MacYoung?  He grew up in LA among (and has spend 40+ years dealing with) people who don't hesitate to use violence to get what they want, on a whim.  He has studied multiple styles of martial arts singe age 10, and has broken down and reworked the most street-effective elements into a system he and his equally-badass wife Dianna ("There's a reason the toilet seat is put down in our house," Marc says) teach, called Dango Jiro ("Mulligan Stew"). He was first shot at when he was 15, and since survived more than one attempt on his life - including professional contracts - some work-related, some personal.  He's worked as the director of a correctional institute, a bodyguard, a bouncer, and worked security at multiple-day events with tens of thousands of people in attendance.  He is considered a leading expert on surviving high-risk situations, and has written multiple books on the subject, used by academies, schools, police departments, and military academies world-wide. As an authority on how violence happens, he is often called upon as a professional, expert witness in both criminal and civil cases. So... we're not 100% sure we want him to have our home address.  But we ARE 500% certain we'll have a great chat with the guy, and it seems likely we can get a few good, bloody stories out of him - we get the feeling he's at least as funny as he is knowledgable and skilled. Whether you're Joe Average or Black Belt Jones, join us for more than you ever wanted to know about the harsh realities of street violence with Marc "Animal" MacYoung!
