Ill Communication, released in 1994, marked a high point for the Beastie Boys, blending their signature irreverent style with genre-hopping experimentation. The album saw the trio—Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock—seamlessly fuse hardcore punk, jazz-funk, and old-school hip-hop, with the standout single “Sabotage” becoming an anthem of the era. Its explosive bassline, distorted guitars, and aggressive delivery captured the Beasties at their rawest and most innovative. At the same time, tracks like “Sure Shot” and “Root Down” paid homage to their b-boy roots with tight rhymes and slick DJ work from Mix Master Mike. The album wasn't just about sonic chaos—it carried deeper, more mature undertones, reflecting MCA's growing interest in Buddhism and activism. For many fans—and clearly for us here at Totally 80's and 90's Recall—Ill Communication stands as a definitive '90s album that refused to be boxed in. It's wild, funny, political, and endlessly replayable. From punk mosh pits to chill jazz instrumentals like “Sabrosa,” the Beastie Boys proved they weren't just rap pranksters from the '80s—they were legit musical craftsmen. The album captured the eclectic energy of the decade and the spirit of reinvention that defined the Beasties' career. Whether you're blasting “Sabotage” in your car or grooving to the funky vibes of “Flute Loop,” this one hits as hard now as it did in ‘94. The beastie boys DJ joins the conversation

The combination of growing up in an environment heavily influenced by Hip-Hop culture, it was only a matter of time before Rey was exposed to the turntablist and b-boy side of things. The "DJ" in Hip-Hop always went hand in hand with the "MC '' or "B-Boys" at all the scenes whether underground or mainstream in scenes throughout New York City. But it was the actual art and technical skills behind DJing that locked in his interest and passion for it. Absorbing all the information possible from attending DJ Battles, being behind the DJ booth at nightclubs, and watching performances from the best to do it such as DJ Q-Bert, MixMaster Mike, Roc Raida, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Scratch, and DJ Kid Capri, all that was left was to get behind the two turntables and a mixer. The rest was history.' From hours of practice in the good ol' bedroom to DJing in the hottest spots in New York City and New Jersey, the potential in this "career" was endless. Fast forward years of DJing events, and radio. networking, and showcasing his talent, Rey has built a name for himself as a DJ and an MC in the tri-state. In addition, he's become the vice president of one of the most sought-after Latin & Caribbean events companies in NYC. While being one of the main talents of the company, he brings his insight to the company and manages other DJs and MCs within the company. The journey still continues as he is a student of the game and new opportunities arise day to day. It's all a matter of learning, growing, adapting and paying it forward. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/2djs/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/2djs/support

If you are new to the podcast then you may not know that theFIVE10 has been around for more than 11 years. What started out as a passion project eventually became the place where artists shared their stories. These artists and bands included names like Henry Rollins, George Clinton, Serj Tankian, and many many more. Steve Jordan joins Billy Amendola & David Frangioni on this “Pop Up Podcast” to talk about a few topics not mentioned in his January 2021 cover story, as well as a few of the drummers who had a significant influence on him. His new record, “Beat Odyssey,” with former Beastie Boys d.j. Mix Master Mike is out now on Jay-Vee Records.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we bring together a pair of legends from different generations: Bootsy Collins and Mix Master Mike. Collins is of course best known for his long stints with Parliament-Funkadelic and James Brown's band, and Mike for his unstoppable contributions to the Beastie Boys. But each musician has spread his wings much farther than those Hall Of Fame acts, up to an including powerful new music. For Bootsy, it's The Power of the One, and for Mix Master Mike, it's Beat Odyssey 2020—what those albums share, beyond a spiritual connection to creativity itself, is a long list of collaborators, because these guys love to find new connections. This chat is one of those connections: Mike is clearly a fan of Bootsy's, and they get deep into conversation about history, music, and—eventually—some more cosmic topics. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if this meeting leads to a collaboration between the two in the future. Subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes. This week's episode was produced by Kevin O'Connell, and the Talkhouse Podcast theme is composed and performed by The Range. —Josh Modell, Executive Editor
Keeping it classy with some classic Asian Cinema by way of ever heightening violence of the insane variety. We watch two very different characters walk the same thin line between a harrowing investigation and general life goals. Both experience separation tonguxiety. Does that track? It’s a portmanteau of Separation Anxiety and tongue. It’s not clever at all, but I’m trying to make the best of a mutilation situation.Tangents include Cast Iron Pans, Uncle Ninja Turtle, Pastry Coffee, and Prometheus Jones. Introducing “Juju Song”.Music by Math the Band. “Juju Song” interlude music by Mix Master Mike & Properllerheads. Tequila by Fortaleza.
On a very special episode of Sticks & Sips we have World Famous, World Champion DJ Mix Master Mike of the Beasie Boys amongst many other accomplishments! Mike is a fan of the Tabak line and we talk to him about his career, and how he got into cigars. We also talk about music and pairing your music with cigars. Join us for a special Episode!
Incoming transmission from Joe Wong. He's an incredibly busy guy: he hosts the Trap Set, a weekly interview podcast he’s helmed since 2015, where he sits down with artists like Mix Master Mike, Sharon Van Etten, Jim Keltner, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, among many others. He also makes music for film in TV—you’ve probably heard his work on Master of None, Russian Doll, Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Midnight Gospel. Joe has long played music with artists like Mary Timony of Helium and Marnie Stern, but recently, he released his debut solo long player, Nite Creatures. Produced by Timony, who also plays on it, it finds him joined by members of Flaming Lips, War on Drugs, and that dog. for a set of deeply cinematic psychedelic pop, which brings to mind the mystical lushness of Scott Walker, the Zombies, and Pink Floyd. One of the albums best songs “Dreams Wash Away” was featured in Duncan Trussel’s Midnight Gospel finale on Netflix—one of the most affecting things you’ll see all year, and like that episode, Nite Creatures grapples with mortality and existential dread, but remains vivid, colorful, and beautiful.
Mixmaster Mike discusses his challenging childhood; his ascent to the top of the competitive DJ world; the development of his singular DJ style; joining the Beastie Boys; and his latest collaboration with Steve Jordan, Beat Odyssey 2020.

This episode also looks at the many ups and downs, lefts and rights the Beastie Boys had in their career and how things could have happened differently if certain things did or didn't transpire...a game of "What If?" if you will. And finally, a special shout to Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor) who recently passed away.
