B. Cox and J.Owe look back at Oakland rap group Souls of Mischief debut album 93 Til Infinity as it turns 30. In the midst of a coastal emergence and commercial recognition in both southern California and the Bay-Area, the teenage group became major players in the Oakland underground scene. After their demos became the talk of certain rap circles and their music was circulated on the legendary "Wake Up Show" with Sway and Tech, the group secured a record deal and started working on their debut album. As a part of the alternative hip-hop collective Heiroglyphics, the album wa entirely produced by group member A-Plus and collective members, Domino, Jay Biz, Casual and group founder Del the Funky Homosapien. Utilizing mainly jazz records from record label CTI Records, the album featured looped jazzy melodies with menacing, but smooth bass tones and snapping drums to give the album its underground feel. The four emcees (Phesto, Opio, Tajai along with A-Plus) impressed with their versatile flows, timely punchlines and skilled wordplay. In a step away from their mainstream contemporaries, the album featured every many topics such as neighborhood violence, the importance of safe sex, exploitation and hanging out.The album featured three singles, the most popular being the classic title track that reached the Top 20 of the Hot Rap Singles and the Top 100 of the Billboard charts. While the album did not have great mainstream success, the album and the ever popular title track have risen in recognition and popularity in the three decades since its release, with many marking it as a landmark underground release and underground West Coast hip-hop classic.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Souls of Mischief Debut Album '93 Til Infinity Turns 25 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/souls-of-mischief-debut-album-93-til-infinity-album-anniversaryColumbus Free Press: Bus Stile Activities: Souls of Mischief "'93 Til Infinity"https://columbusfreepress.com/article/bus-stile-activities-souls-mischief-%E2%80%9C93-till-infinity%E2%80%9DWGBH Radio: Souls Of Mischief Tajai Massey On The Lasting Power of "'93 Til Infinity"https://www.wgbh.org/culture/2023-06-16/souls-of-mischief-s-tajai-massey-on-the-lasting-power-of-93-til-infinitySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Yes people, we're back talking about which 90s rap songs we'd play to an alien to define hip hop.
30 years after their debut, Souls of Mischief are proving that the title of their song "93 'Til Infinity" is true. Currently, they are in the middle of a world tour spanning over 100 dates, selling out shows around the globe, winning over young fans through streaming, and demonstrating a longevity that is rarely seen in rap music. This exclusive interview with all 4 members of Souls - A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai - touches on their upbringing in East Oakland, their early days recording with Del the Funky Homosapien, traveling to LA as teenagers to build with Ice Cube, Sir Jinx and Eazy-E, and the ups and downs of signing to a major label. As members of the Hieroglyphics collective along with Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and DJ Toure, Souls and their comrades have been successful independent artists since the 90s. They also touch on how they define success for themselves, their pursuit of other careers outside of music, and how their friendship has helped them stick together to inspire new generations through music year after year. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
We're back after a long but necessary hiatus. And what better way to return than with....oh no. Welp, Kanye is back on the podcast, and even more treacherous than last we talked about him. Which is a shame, because College Dropout is a genuinely fun, and funny, album. With a clear potshot at Ye's recent history, Matt talks some albums that try to Make Hip-Hop Fun Again in Del tha Funky Homosapien's Both Sides of the Brain and Madvillain's Madvillainy (which also means this is the second pod appearance for the late, great MF DOOM). p.s. We actually recorded this one before our hiatus, so ignore any dated references.

We have another absolutely STACKED rap album from that really conceptual period between 1999 and 2001 that rap experienced before 9/11 blew everything up (I have no proof that 9/11 had anything to do with it, but I did hear that rap could melt steel beams). Fantasy sports writer and editor Nando Di Fino (currently The Athletic, previously CBS Sports, ESPN and others) joins Al for what is possibly their first-ever discussion about music, even though they've been friends and colleagues for more than decade. Nando chose the soundtrack from the movie, Judgment Night, as the topic for their conversation. Along the way, Nando discusses his mother's record collection, his love of Christmas music and the extremely cool set of experiences he had when he was a student at Boston College.I mistakenly said that the album features 22 different artists across 11 tracks, but Cypress Hill appears on two different tracks, so the total number of artists is 21.Nando talked about a Christmas village in Washington state, and I guessed the location was George, but I think he was referring to Leavenworth. The R.E.M. song I was trying to think of but inexplicably blanked out on was Radio Song, which featured KRS-One.Nando made a reference to "Mistadobalina" by Del the Funky Homosapien. I did not realize until researching it that the titular line that is repeated throughout the song was originally recorded by The Monkees for their song, “Zilch.”It's not too late (or early) to read the latest piece that Nando and Brandon Funston did on Christmas songs for The Athletic. Wax Tailor - "Just a Candle (feat. Mark Lanegan)" from the 2021 album The Shadow of Their Suns on Lab'Oratoire. French producer Wax Tailor returned this year with his first new album in five years, The Shadow Of Their Suns, a star-studded affair featuring special guests like Del the Funky Homosapien, D Smoke, Gil Scott-Heron, Adeline, and, on today's Song of the Day, Mark Lanegan of The Screaming Trees. In a statement toUnder the Radar, Tailor explains: “I started working on the demo, early 2019 & immediately called it ‘Candle.’ I had this vision of a candle as an allegory of life. The candle that illuminates us, burns out, and one day turns off. I had scenes in mind and I wanted to play on the contrast between a dry and dark rhythm and incandescent arrangements to illustrate this path of life. I added the gimmick of the blown candle that illustrates the unknown. I then invited Mark who injected his print to the song.” “The first time I heard Mark Lanegan I was still in high school, and his friend Kurt Cobain was still alive. 30 years later, it’s hard to get into an exhaustive list of his discography, between the Screaming Trees, his solo albums, his albums with Isobel Campbell, Queen Of The Stone Age, and many others. I’ve been hoping for a long time that one day I’d have a title for him. When I started the demo, I immediately thought it was the right one. I contacted him in the spring of 2019 to propose it and he answered me in the simplest way possible. We met during his last tour in France and we continued to work remotely. I am very proud of this title, this meeting, and what Mark brings to it. In a music industry where bending your back is often a conditioned reflex, Mark is a great humble man who goes through the decades without artifice, with talent and righteousness.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you’re looking for some “Treats for the kiddies”, perhaps you’re in the “Wrong Place”. However, there’s “No Need for Alarm”, as the album title for this week’s episode suggests, as Matt and Brandon cover Del the Funky Homosapien. This Bay Area rap icon delivers this 1993 project in an upbeat and unique fashion that blasts wack emcees, stresses the importance of having confidence in your environment, and of course the despicable nature of “Boo booheads”. Just one year after the world got the hip-hopera masterpiece "A Prince Among Thieves," the world got another injection of masterful hip-hop story-telling, in 2000's "Deltron 3030." It's an adventure that traverses time and space, in a universe where rap battling is the most honorable form of combat, and a way to fight the corporate overlords. Our heroes are Del the Funky Homosapien as "Deltron-Zero", a mech soldier turned rebel, and Dan the Automator as "The Automator", a "time traveling cyborg wizard" (actual quote from the wiki). Together, they attempt to take down the faceless, soulless organizations in this 31st century dystopia. They covered some of these Afrofuturist ideas in earlier hip-hop or hip-hop adjacent groups such as Sun Ra, Kool Keith, and Paliament-Funkadelic; but with the production capabilities of the beginning of the 21st century, Del and Dan the Automator give the genre a rejuvenation and an instant cult classic. Although it didn't get the initial attention that it deserved, "Deltron 3030" has stood the test of time, and even stands above a lot of what it had to compete with. Today it's Brad, Jon, Dave, Jake, and Trevor on to talk. It's the whole crew!! This week on Total Movie Recall, Ryan gets his hipster comedy credentials revoked after Steve makes him pay $3.99 to watch the 1994 not-so-classic comedy, Cabin Boy. Oakland is a city filled with dynasties teams. You had the Raiders, the A's and most recently, the Warriors. But this Oakland collective, better known as the Hieroglyphics Crew, had a dynasty of their own. Founded by Del the Funky Homosapien, this was squad rolled deep, very deep. They were like the Wu before the Wu even existed. Hieroglyphics featured many personalities and styles ranging from Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, Opio, Phesto, Tajai, A-Plus, Jay-Biz, Mike G, Snupe, Extra Prolific to Toure. Their 3rd eye logo is immediately recognizable as are many of their classics cuts. This mini-mix is from our West Coast Classic series, and while we only scratched the surface, this Hiero tribute serves as a great reminder of the their dominance in hip-hop. Oaktown is full of legends like Rickey Henderson, Bill Russell, Kamala Harris, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Bruce and Brandon Lee, Gary Payton, Marshawn Lynch, 2Pac, Paul Pierce, MC Hammer, Tony! Toni! Deltron 3030's Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator discuss authenticity in hip hop, how Mega Man inspired their last record, and resisting the urge to play the game. The music industry game, that is. You'll also hear a live session from The Tallest Man on Earth and a tribute to Muhammad Ali.
I knew this was going to be a special time when I walked in on Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator (two thirds of Deltron 3030) arguing with one another about disco. Sure enough, it was a spirited conversation about hip hop, authenticity and secret mandolins. Oh and by the way, their new record, "Event 2," is badass!
