It's time for the completion episode of Dream Drop Distance! John takes Jared and Matt through a fun(?) game where they try to guess what he named every spirit as he worked towards completion, then goes over all the ways in which completion in Dream Drop Distance sucks, from obnoxious grinding by throwing Spirits in water barrels or balloon minigames, to using forecasts to try to get every single special portal, to a really stupid hidden message in the credits. It's not all bad, though, we've got an optional boss and a bunch of rather good story stuff, so let's have some fun this week!

This time we focus on Sora's side of The World That Never Was. We come to an understanding of both why Sora is the protagonist despite not being the chosen hero of the Keyblade, and what Xehanort's plan has been. Riku takes over once more to finish off Young Xehanort, and Master Xehanort closes out the game with a pitch for the story of Kingdom Hearts 3. Discussion of weird time travel, what it means to be a Xehanort, and more await in this installment!

The trip's going bad as we enter the first part of the finale of Dream Drop Distance with a return to The World that Never Was! We briefly get to see Sora be taunted by Xigbar before we are forced to drop to Riku, who has to deal with shifting dream labyrinths and crazy reveals about his present status as a Dream Eater, culminating in the final showdown with his own Darkness personified by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. Obnoxious fights await in this installment!

It's time for the final Disney world in Dream Drop Distance, along with its coolest world concept (and perhaps the coolest world concept in all of Kingdom Hearts), Symphony of Sorcery, based on Disney's Fantasia. It's all about the classical music this week as Sora and Riku go through largely plotless worlds based on Fantasia sections and fight classic Fantasia villains Chernobog and Spellican. Wait, something seems off about that.

It's time to visit a Disney world that can in no way come close to just how bizarre the movie it's based on is, the Country of Musketeers! Based on the 2004 direct to DVD animated movie Mickey, Goofy, and Donald: The Three Musketeers, this world makes us question many things, including the timeline of Mickey as a Keyblade master and how sleeping worlds even work. We continually fight our distractions and weeb sensibilities as we try to make sense of this absurd world we have found ourselves in. Goofy demonstrates his keenly honed mind for slapstick comedy by performing the most impractical yeeting that has ever yeeted.

This week, we head back to Traverse Town because it's glowing for some reason! Sora and Riku have to help the The World Ends With You characters deal with a Spellican problem, which seems to be the kind of NFT that steals all your other NFTs from your wallet. But that's not important, what's really important is what happens at the end of the episode, where Maleficent makes her move to assert her dominance as the true endgame of Kingdom Hearts by performing the most evil move anyone can do: making Coded matter.

Time for Kingdom Hearts to make its saving throw on portraying Pinocchio with Prankster's Paradise! Sora gets to explore a fun theme park and interact with characters he's met that don't remember him, while Riku gets to go through a much better version of Monstro that isn't a chaos maze. The reality shift for this world enables some utterly delightful nonsense against the lobster themed dream eaters we face. Various discussions of gross anatomy are had. Fun!

This week in the world of dreams, Sora and Riku find a world almost but not entirely unlike Space Paranoids! We go in to the legacy of Tron Legacy and then see all the ways Dream Drop Distance kinda just makes a rather mid Kingdom Hearts world out of it. There's still fun to be had, though, as Sora gets great lines, Riku gets great character development, and the evil version of Tron, Rinzler, gets to beat us up for an hour.

The first Disney world in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is also the wildest tone misfire in the entire Disney Animated canon! Join Sora and Riku as they grapple with such horrors as anti-Roma racism, Catholics, and awkwardly out of place talking gargoyle statues in La Cité des Cloches, because the French would complain if we just called it Paris. We discuss the movie that spawned the world, then observe just how much of it is pared back in the traditional Kingdom Hearts way.

Time to start the time traveling adventure in the world of dreams, Dream Drop Distance! This week, after we introduce the basics of how DDD works, we begin our journey with a revisit to Traverse Town, which is much bigger than we remember. Also it's been crashed by characters from Tetsuya Nomura's best game, The World Ends With You! Fun and Flowmotion await us on the next leg of our journey!

Even that, however, is a hard question to answer because it hasn't been 13 years since the release of any Kingdom Hearts game. Only the numbered, mainline ones. We've had a slew of releases like Birth by Sleep (which might as well have been renamed Kingdom Hearts Zero), Dream Drop Distance, re:Coded, Chain of Memories, and so on.  We haven't necessarily missed them, but there hasn't been a primary console release since KH2. The others were all handhelds, except for remasters/re-releases. In general, we think that yes it was worth it. But the better answer is kinda because it can't be talked about without a few caveats. What You Should Know Before Playing Kingdom Hearts 3 Before diving in, let us give you a few points that we've noticed people talk about so that you're not surprised. 1. Cutscenes First, the cutscenes are long. Like...Xenoblade Chronicles 2 long. So make sure that you're ready for that. Second...the cutscenes don't make as much sense as you think they should. If you've played all the games, you'll be frustrated because you know this stuff. And if you've just played KH1 and KH2, then you're going to be frustrated because even the clarification of what happened in the other games is nonsense. That said, it's easy to bounce off Kingdom Hearts 3 early. Please don't. If you try it and aren't sold, get to the end of the Toy Story world (the first of the real worlds) before deciding to bounce. The game opens up a lot at that point. (Kind of like Persona 5 opening up after the first Palace.) 2. Combat is Chaos...At First When you start out, the combat feels like fast actiony, Kingdom Hearts combat. It's frenetic and wild. It's also (mostly) controlled chaos. That's because they have included nearly every combat mechanic from all the other Kingdom Hearts games into this one. All at once. (No cards from Chain of Memories, though, thankfully.) You get Attractions, Shotlock, Flowmotion, Summons, Grand Magic, Weapon Transformations, Team Attacks, and...probably something we're forgetting, too. At first, it's easy to get overwhelmed. But as you play, you both grow used to it and see the logic behind it all. Plus, you learn which pieces and mechanics work best for you, so you can ignore the ones that don't. Just be aware, it's not all button mashing with a few reaction commands. We promise. 3. The Boys Are Back You get to keep Goofy and Donald in your party at all times now. No more swapping in and out. The Disney characters just add on and follow you around and fight. It's awesome. 4. The Pirates World is Garbage The Pirates of the Caribbean world is garbage. It’s a garbage world with a garbage story with garbage gameplay mechanics and garbage characters.  It is, however, very pretty. Very, very pretty. The graphics are incredibly well-done. Other than that...garbage. You have been warned. So power through it, get to the end, and then you can go back and explore later. We promise that it's a lot more enjoyable as an open world rather than a narrative experience. 5. The Minigames and Sidequests are Awesome Austin and Beej diverge on why they like the game. Beej enjoys the combat and the story, while Austin prefers the minigames and sidequests.  They intersect at the Lucky Emblems collection, which is basically the same thing as Hidden Mickeys at the Disney themeparks. You take pictures of things that look like Mickey's sillhouette, and you get rewards for it (including a secret ending if you have enough!). That's not all, though. There is a cooking minigame, retro-style LCD arcade games you collect and play, treasure chests to find, Moogle photo assignments, synthesis material collections, the Flantastic Seven series of dessert-themed trials, Frozen sledding, Giant Robot mech battles, Big Hero 6 AR courses, pirate ship battles, and so much more across nearly every single world. Oh, and Battlegates. Battlegates are cool. There is a lot to do in this game. So if you're a completionist, you will have a field day.  Beej hit the credits a few minutes under 40 hours, but he's nowhere near finished. Austin is at nearly the same amount of hours played, but isn't even approaching the end of the story.  And after recording, we found out there was a superboss in KH3. Noice. So...Don't Bail on Kingdom Hearts 3 This is a very good game with a lot to offer, even if the beginning of the game has some strange choices in the beginning few hours. In this episode, I go through the entire history of Kingdom Hearts — starting with Birth by Sleep, going through to Dream Drop Distance, and then, going all the way back and actually trying to make sense of the plot of Union Cross. Join in with Branden, Churro, Jackie, and Lauren as they start working through it all including a ten-minute trailer, an interview in Nintendo Power, the SE premier party, a European release date, and lots of other interesting info from the gameplay. After wading through the boat load of news, the gang goes into the Burning Question and read’s your answers to “What do you expect from Nomura in 2012?” The answers may surprise you! And then the quartet moves right into your questions! This week, hear the group’s thoughts on whether KH needs more followers/fans, which characters should be paired and who each host would be paired with, and what’s going to happen with Birth By Sleep 2. Kingdom Hearts Union is all about the Dream Drop Distance this week and the gang is ready to dive in. This week, Lauren is joined by Darryl and Churro and they get down to business.
