The editor of the Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, was included on a national security thread this week by mistake. But, by his detailed article, you would think what was observed the scandal of the century... when all it really showed was a national security team absolutely on the same page and working together for the betterment of the country. Don't tell that to Jeffrey Goldberg, who if he had any honor, would have excused himself from the thread... Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are moving fast and furious to make sure that Donald Trump's 2017 tax cuts don't expire at the end of 2025. Does the math even work? Republicans want all the benefits of the tax cuts but don't want to cut spending. The consequences are catastrophic as America reels towards a debt bomb. And recent postmortem election surveys show massive shifts in African American, Hispanic, and 18–34-year-olds towards Republicans - making the 2030 census crucial. Both Chris and Sean conclude that Democratic COVID policies towards our youth had massive electoral implications. Lastly, it's March Madness and the Arizona Wildcats are in the Sweet 16 to face Duke... while no one quite had Arkansas and John Calipari in their 16 Bracket. In 1978, horror legend George A. Romero created one of the most iconic films in the horror genre and a classic that defied genres altogether. His follow up to his mighty 1968 masterpiece “Night of the Living Dead”. The film, about a small band of survivors who take shelter in a shopping mall, while the outside world falls apart at the clawing hands of the living dead, was not only an audience and critical hit, it redefined the genre and its influence cannot be underestimated. In this special episode of Spill your guts, we celebrate the 45th anniversary of George A. Romero's seminal masterpiece, “Dawn of the Dead”.Joining me to discuss the film is horror maestro and long time friend of Spill your guts, Chris Alexander. Chris is the former editor of Fangoria magazine, an author, filmmaker and all around genre spokesman. He's also the perfect person for me to talk with about the film. Both Chris and I were fortunate enough to have a friendship with George and we both had our own unique conversations with him about “Dawn” and his relationship to the film.We discuss the films inception, the happy accidents that lead to some of the films most iconic moments, the challenges George faced with the production itself, the films incredibly multifaceted and damn near perfect script and why George Romero himself had a somewhat complicated relationship with the film. This and much, much more. It's difficult when discussing a film like “Dawn” not to retread when a movie has been analyzed and discussed as much as this but by taking a more holistic view of the film and because of our own relationships with the films creator, I feel even the most devout “Dawn” fans will find some ideas and insights here worth chewing on.Okay folks, there's no more room in hell so let's get down to it and return to Monroeville Mall with Chris Alexander as we look back at George A. Welcome to Episode 208, which features a fantastic author spotlight with Sara B. Franklin. Her new biography, THE EDITOR: HOW PUBLISHING LEGEND JUDITH JONES SHAPED CULTURE IN AMERICA, is a must-read. It is not hyperbole to say that everyone reading and eating today has been touched by Judith Jones's work, and Franklin's writing is a delight to read. We had a great Biblio Adventure to Brooklyn with Aunt Ellen. Our goal of making it to THE RIPPED BODICE Bookstore has been achieved, and it was worth the wait! Many of our listeners were avid followers of or found us through Jenny Colvin's podcast, READING ENVY: I'll have what you're reading. Jenny passed away in May of 2022. We miss her, and know that many of you do, too. To honor her memory, we are joining our BookTube friend SHAWN BREATHES BOOKS (formerly Shawn the Book Maniac) and doing something we think Jenny would love – reading books together! We are each choosing one book from Jenny's Goodreads lists. The plan is to read the book by July 1st, Jenny's birthday. We would love for you to join us by reading along with one of our selections or choosing a book of your own. We have a conversation thread on our Goodreads page, and we've created the hashtag #illhavewhatyourereading to use on social media. Let's keep Jenny's love for books alive in our hearts and our reading. In other reading news, you might remember from our last episode that Emily expressed her desire to read Monica Wood's THE ONE-IN-A-MILLION BOY. And guess what? It magically appeared in one of her beloved Little Free Libraries. Isn't it a delightful feeling when such serendipitous moments occur? Emily loved the novel. She also read two short stories, “Ernie's Ark” by Monica Wood from the collection ERNIE'S ARK: THE ABBOTT FALLS STORIES and “Chapter Two” by Antonya Nelson in BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES 2013, edited by Elizabeth Strout. She savored THE PARIS NOVEL by Ruth Reichl, while Chris unexpectedly found herself engrossed in another book by Cal Newport, DEEP WORK: RULES FOR FOCUSED SUCCESS IN A DISTRACTED WORLD. Both Chris and Emily have been captivated by JAMES by Percival Everett, especially the audiobook narrated by Dominic Hoffman. Everett's narrative is a brilliant reinterpretation and expansion of THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN, and Hoffman's performance is simply outstanding. Chris has completed her second reading of MOBY-DICK, an endeavor that was as equally challenging and rewarding as her first encounter with the book. As always, we also talk about what we're currently reading and hoping to read soon. Happy Listening and Happy Reading! Emily and Chris

Welcome back to the Hustle & Flowchart podcast! On today's incredible journey, I had the pleasure of reuniting with Chris Martinez, who offered his sharp and critical insights into some of the systemic issues we face in both the entrepreneurial world and the wider society. This episode isn't just business as usual; we took a deep dive into the discussion of racism -- a topic that's often deemed too sensitive or taboo, but one that we believe is vital for growth, awareness, and change. The Systemic Nature of Racism in the Film Industry Chris Martinez shed light on the systemic racism within the film industry, revealing that financial stakes often lead to casting predominantly white leads. This isn't always due to overt racism but instead a reliance on "safe" patterns to secure box office success. These decisions contribute to the significant underrepresentation of Asian Americans and African Americans in films. Our takeaway here is that systemic problems require systemic solutions – it's not merely a series of isolated incidents but a broader pattern that needs to be addressed. Embracing Diversity for Innovation and Growth Our discussion also branched into the necessity of diversifying our workforce. Chris pointed out how tapping into a broader range of talents can present untapped opportunities and aid in a business's growth. The world's demographics are shifting, and companies that embrace this change will be better positioned to succeed. Breaking Barriers in Communication and Culture We emphasized how technology and communication are crucial in breaking down the barriers between cultures. Both Chris and I agreed that an open mind and the readiness to overcome personal biases could lead to a more equitable and inclusive society, fostering personal and collective growth. We also discussed the "Agency Freedom Live" event aiming to promote these very values in the entrepreneurial space. The Scientific Approach to Understanding Racism Chris suggested recording an intro about what racism means. By defining racism and its manifestations, like assumed stereotypes, we can approach the issue scientifically. He encouraged business owners to objectively assess each individual's skills without letting biases interfere, advocating for a level playing field for all.. Overcoming Biases for Minority Entrepreneurs Chris shared personal experiences dealing with discrimination and bias, highlighting that minority entrepreneurs often need to work twice as hard to be recognized for their success. It highlighted the issue of credibility and how audience biases tend to favor white individuals, illustrating the need for greater diversity in speaking opportunities. Institutional Racism and Its Long-Term Impacts The episode also tackled institutional and systemic racism, particularly in the context of housing inequality for African Americans. We discussed how this has affected their ability to build wealth and pass on entrepreneurial knowledge, serving as a stark example of the pervasive challenges that minorities face. Resources from Chris Chris brings a unique voice to a commonly overlooked conversation in the industry. Beyond the podcast, Dude Agencystands as a testament to Chris's commitment to not just discussing change but actively fostering it. This is especially evident in the excitement around the upcoming "Agency Freedom Live" event—an innovative summit set to take place this August in San Diego. Tailored for forward-thinking entrepreneurs, the event pledges to offer a vibrant mix of educational sessions, leadership development, and engaging networking opportunities. This episode with Chris Martinez was a profound one. We delved into some uncomfortable realities about racism and representation, but it was a necessary conversation for growth and understanding. Our key takeaways involve recognizing the systemic and institutional nature of racism and the need to be proactive in fostering diversity and inclusivity in all spaces—not just as a moral imperative but as a smart business and social practice too. Let's take these insights and actions forward to create a world where innovation and leadership reflect our richly diverse society. In this episode, we tackle a listener question regarding planning a geology trip for students.  Both Chris and Jesse have quite a bit of experience in planning and executing field excursions for students.  We believe that seeing geology in the field is one of the most powerful learning opportunities for students of all levels.  In our discussion, we talk about the difficulties in convincing the higher-ups that this is actually a good idea.  We also get into some of the struggles in finding excellent teacher resources.  In the end, we get a little philosophical on the importance of getting comfortable with not having all of the answers.  We think that sometimes it's important for students to know that instructors don't know it all and together we can perhaps think about things different and come to new conclusions.  We hope you enjoy. We now have a live Mobile App for iOS and Android. This week we have our longest episode yet as we take a deep dive into the work of Rick Froberg, the singer of Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu and Obits who sadly passed away in June 2023. Enlisting the help of post-punk encyclopaedia, and literal Doctor in punk music, our friend Ferruccio Quercetti, we take a real good look at the work of Nick Froberg through the lens of Hot Snakes. With work on their fifth album said to be nearing completion at the time of his passing, this episode serves as a tribute to the man's talent. Whilst we do mostly focus on Hot Snakes for most of this episode, we do touch on every project he, and John Reis, have been part of to some extent. We didn't want to dwell on the other projects too long though, as there's a really good chance we'll come back and do episodes on Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt at some point in the future. Both Chris and Ferro chose their favourite Hot Snakes albums for this episode. Sucide Invoice, the band's second album, is Chris' pick, whilst Ferro plumps for their third album, Audit in Progress. Now that isn't to say that one is necessarily better than the other - truth be told, all four of their albums are really bloody good - but Chris and Ferro have their reasons for picking these two specifically, and we get into that in this episode. Along the way we also cite a ton of other bands that influenced Rick, as well as a whole bunch more bands that were influenced by him too. So please, grab yourself a beverage of any kind, raise it in a toast to Rick Froberg, and get stuck into this monster episode.

In the first episode of our new cycle Set in the 1950s, we take a look at Wes Anderson's new film, Asteroid City (2023). Both Chris and I are devout Wes Anderson fans, and covering Asteroid City was really the impetus for this cycle's theme. As we have traversed this cycle, we are seeing how the 1950s setting can be used in a variety of ways with varying degrees of historical richness. Wes, quite predictably, uses the Eisenhower years as mostly set dressing for his story of grief and isolation out in the red desert. Of course the film looks gorgeous and is filled to the brim with exquisite detail, but the film does deviate significantly from the typical Anderson film. Here the meta impulse is greatly indulged with a play running intertwined within the main narrative. The film has become quite divisive even amongst Wes Anderson aficionados. A great counterpoint to Asteroid City is Steven Spielberg's autobiographical The Fabelmans (2022). Both works are about directors turning the lens inwards. Whereas Anderson deconstructs his own style and voice into a kaleidoscope of detail and paratexts, Spielberg lends his own story a hyperrealism he often evoked in his most classic work. Both films are honest reflections.Note: This podcast was recorded and produced during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of writers and actors currently on strike, Asteroid City and The Fabelmans would not exist. Support the artists who make the art you love.

Joe fixates on Darleen Love (and also has a true Abbott & Costello moment with James during the Christmas Activities category). Both Chris and Joe are frequently flabbergasted by their incorrect answers to the point where they both need a drink. And Richie, like Santa, remains sure and steady and...Well, that would be telling. It's a fun-filled hour of Holiday cheer lovingly produced for our treasured listeners. We of course wish you peace, and only the best this Holiday Season.

On October 8th, 2000, 44-year-old Chris Northon is camping in Oregon with his wife, 38-year-old Liysa, and their 3-year-old son. After four years of marriage, Chris and Liysa were no longer happy. Both Chris and Liysa hoped that this weekend getaway could help mend their relationship's troubles. But when Liysa confronts Chris about his poor behavior and substance abuse, the couple trade harsh words—and blows. That night, Liysa uses her .38-caliber revolver to shoot Chris in the head while he is asleep in his sleeping bag. At trial, Liysa reveals that Chris abused her, physically and emotionally, for years. But when unexpected evidence appears mid-trial, Liysa goes to prison for 12 years with a plea deal. Controversy is sparked years later when prolific true crime author Ann Rule covers the case in her best-selling novel Heart Full of Lies. In episode 219, Jac and Alexis explore the tangled web of lies surrounding Chris Northon's death.

Rick has been teasing this episode for a few weeks now, and it's finally here! After some scheduling conflicts, the boys (yes, that means Dex is back!) are joined by friends Justin and Chris for an awesome chat about their upcoming elk hunting trip. Both Chris and Justin are members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) and through an encounter on a fire truck, they have forged a lifelong friendship, built around the outdoors. After years of hunting whitetail together, they set a goal to do a backcountry bow hunt for elk, and its finally here. This is Rick's bucket list trip, so he could not wait to have them walk us through their prep for this trip and this episode did not disappoint. From where their journey started, to where it now will be taking them, this show is full of quality information, entertaining conversation, and if your like Rick and Dex, it will have you anxiously awaiting the post-op episode once Chris and Justin return. Join SG+T as we dive into what it looks like for a couple of family men, balancing work and passions, prepare for a week miles away from civilization, chasing one of God's most awesome creations, the bugling elk! Most SG+T episodes post on Thursdays, however we are posting this one a day early, so the Chris and Justin can listen on their drive into an unnamed trailhead (though their might be some coordinates given away in the episode)!Don't forget to subscribe and share!
