We need to diversify our political investments just like we would financial investments. We need to understand the limitations of Trump to even win, much less change things, as well as our limited ability to alter the outcome of the presidential election at an individual level. However, when it comes to red state local and statewide races, we can accomplish so much more. I also explain why I'm supporting Phil Lyman's write-in campaign for governor of Utah against Spencer Cox. In that vein, we're joined by New Hampshire state rep. Emily Phillips who got elected as a school board member fighting mask mandates and is now challenging a RINO state senator. She explains why her election embodies both the opportunities and challenges conservatives face in making red state legislatures red. They are truing to shield members from having to take tough votes and her entire mission is to force them to take those tough votes. She also shows how RINOs are so shameless and have no fear of God that they are willing to lie about conservative challengers and paint them as the liberal. It was so bad that Emily's opponent, a mask supporter, photoshopped a picture of her with a mask to try to make her out to be a COVID freak when in fact she was the local champion against mask mandates.   Learn more about your ad choices. Songwriting is the creative bedrock of pop music. But the rise of streaming technology and new platforms - from Spotify and YouTube to TikTok - has not only changed the way we listen to music, it is transforming the art of songwriting itself. For decades, the focus was on the album as a whole, and which tracks would work for radio play or single release. With streaming, all consideration is rolled into the song itself, the central currency of the new technology. But it is also dictating the way songs are being written. For professional writers today, streaming means shorter durations, the compression of melodic and harmonic ideas and faster tempos to counter our diminishing attention spans. It means overloading the front of songs with hooks and earworms and heading straight to the chorus to stop listeners skipping tracks. The pressure to deliver hits that keep the listener engaged in real time is, some argue, industrialising the craft with a huge growth of song-writing long-distance and by committee - a creative division of labour between producers (now called ‘track writers’) beat-makers and ‘topliners’, those writers hired to focus solely on the melody and lyrics. Music platforms are recording our listening choices even as they deliver their services, and this is changing the way music is written too. AI and algorithm technologies mean that, even as we stream and share music online, our data is harvested and fed back to record companies and labels and then passed on to the writers, producing a kind of creative feedback loop. Songwriters are under pressure to produce more and more of the same formula, discouraging innovation and risk while the ear becomes conditioned to certain tempos and durations, chord progressions, hooks and production textures. Now the streaming economy itself is coming under political scrutiny. Campaigns like Broken Record are challenging an economic model they argue is so skewed, with so little remuneration for writers, that it’s endangering the profession itself. From the 45 rpm single and the album era to the digital download, the medium has always shaped the way pop music is written as well as listened to. Now the craft of songwriting is being revolutionised again, even as the technology re-wires our cognitive relationship to music. Presented by songwriter and topliner Helienne Lindvall, this feature hears from songwriters, lyricists and producers from across the pop spectrum including Nile Rodgers, Tre Jean-Marie, Emily Phillips, Jin Jin, Ant Whiting, Nick Atkinson, Tom Gray and Iain Archer. Two moms in rural Collin County have come up with an ingenious way to protect doctors and their families from getting sick after long shifts at the hospital. Medical staff don’t just need PPEs right now. They also need RVs. Emily Phillips is married to an ER doctor and got worried that her husband could bring home COVID19 since both she and their 8-year-old son suffer from asthma. So, Emily got on Facebook last week and asked if she could borrow an RV to allow her husband to come home – but still stay outside to prevent any possible exposure. Within six days, Emily’s one Facebook request has turned into an entire Facebook Group with a couple thousand members and RV owners across the country lending their motorhomes to doctors they’ve never even met. Emily Phillips and her new friend, Holly Haggard, joined the Jasons in a lively conversation. Also, in the episode, COVID19 blindsided a lot of businesses in our state. But not the grocer, HEB. In January, the popular Texas supermarket chain started making calls to suppliers and retailers in China to see what kind of impact they were experiencing from the coronavirus. Those phone calls paid off. By March, when cases began surfacing in Texas, HEB was ready. It enacted an emergency plan, raised hourly pay for workers and changed store hours to address the conflict. In this bonus episode of Simplify season 2, we talk with Eli Finkel. Finkel is a writer and social psychologist at Northwestern University. He's also the author of the new book The All-or-Nothing Marriage. On this episode, Caitlin Schiller talks to Finkel about where the ideas in the book came from. Finkel explains how he discovered that marriage is tied to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: throughout history, the main purpose of marriage was tied to survival, but today we’re asking for much more. We want our marriage to make us better people; to help us realize our best selves. He and Caitlin dive into social psychology, long-term passion, and a couple of “love hacks” that can get you and your partner back on track. After the interview, Ben Schuman-Stoler and Emily Phillips discuss the key takeaways of the interview and make a booklist for anyone who wants to read more about changing your mindset (which has more to do with good relationships than you think!). For more info, including links to everything we discussed in the episode and a voucher to use Blinkist for free, go to http://blinkist.com/magazine/posts/simplify-marriage-eli-finkel. Quick reminder: This season, we are collecting your voices! It's not as creepy as it sounds, we promise. We just would love to hear how you would answer one of the questions we always ask our guests: “What have you discovered was much easier than you initially thought it was?” You can just record your answer with any voice memo app and email it to us at podcast@blinkist.com. If you want to say hi to Ben and Caitlin in the meantime, you can find them on Twitter: @bsto and @CaitlinSchiller. Let them know what you're reading! Jay Ungar & Molly Mason perform live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, interviews with Jay & Molly, a performance from the Lazy Goat String Band, Brooks Blevins: Ghost of the Ozarks tale, and Mark Jones "Vault" segment featuring Jimmy Driftwood. Jay and Molly are veterans of the acoustic music scene on the east coast and have been performing together for well over 20 years and it really shows. Jay and Molly’s performance at the Ozark Folk Center State Park highlights all aspects of their musical style and ability. The Lazy Goat Stringband is comprised of Scott and Samuel Blake (father & son) on guitar and claw-hammer banjo and Emily Phillips on fiddle. They have regular performers at the Ozark Folk Center State Park for the past several years and one of the more popular, in demand groups in the region. Their attention to the authenticity of their sound is just as keen as their eye on making music a fun endeavor. Had he known, Ken Burns might have used some of their recordings in The Civil War, they would be right at home. Brooks Blevins gives a native’s view of the people, music, and colorful events that shape the Ozark region. The author and historian presents the first of his three part series "Ghost of the Ozarks," on the infamous Connie Franklin murder trial. Mark Jones' “From the Vault” segment features a rare recording of Jimmy Driftwood singing his hit song "The Battle of New Orleans," from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives.

In our special Christmas Eve episode, Chris, Nick, and special guest Emily Phillips dive in to the garbage pile and pull up this bizarre cut up of a low budget Santa slaying fiasco. After the first film was banned in a number of theaters, the producers wanted to slice up the first movie--about a damaged boy who goes on a revenge killing spree dressed as Santa Claus--into an all new less gory version. Instead, the writer and director insisted on shooting new footage, adding a psychotic and much buffer younger brother with more expressive eyebrows. Where the infamous "GARBAGE DAY" clip originated.
