Isolation. Exclusivism. The sovereignty of man. Fixated on external practices. A rejection of the historical church. This is what has characterized eccentric cults over the years. But, the fallout from gross heterodoxy and hypocrisy can be severe. But the biggest cult of all is the post-Christian, anti-Christian worldview indoctrination into atheism and humanism. This brought about a sexual revolution that did more damage than anybody could have ever imagined. This program includes: 1. The Doctrine of Eschatology: Judgment and Hell Chris Hefner Three Overarching Principles: The Hebrew linear view of history means that the world is advancing toward a telos or end. We need to enlarge our perspective on the subject of what is to come because of the vastness of what has been. We would be wise to hold our eschatological perspectives a little less tightly than the other main doctrines of the Bible. General Order of Eschatological Events: Jesus' Return (Parousia)Þ ResurrectionÞ Final Judgment Þ Hell/Lake of Fire Clarifying Passages: Matthew 25:31-46—the eternal nature of blessing and judgment 1 Corinthians 3:10-15—the nature of the believer's judgment Revelation 20:4-15—the final judgment (Great White Throne) Theological Considerations: Who receives judgment and reward? Universalism, Pluralism, Inclusivism, Exclusivism. The questions of compatibility: Is everlasting judgment compatible with God's justice; with his love; with his victory; with his grace? Annihilationism—those who remain reprobate (in unbelief) are eventually annihilated utterly and do not live in judgment forever. Conditional Immortality—only those who believe are granted eternal life. Theological Takeaway: To ignore the biblical doctrine of hell is to misunderstand the holiness of God and/or to minimize the depth of human sin. Worship Takeaway: The doctrine of hell depicts the holy wrath of the one true God. It invites (demands) reverential fear. Evangelistic Takeaway: If we take the Bible to be true and authoritative, then we must pray and share the gospel that those who do not believe may come to Christ. A good sign you are part of a cult or a religious organization that thinks they are not, here are some good signs to watch for: 1. Extreme Authoritarianism 2. Exclusivism - we have the answer and everyone else is wrong. 3. Separate and Control - Usually they remove the Prophets and the Fathers first. 4. Isolation - There is a big difference between Isolation and Solitude. What are some ways to be and stay healthy: 1. Apostolic Teams - Teams of men and women that are activated in their gift, and serving one another by speaking the truth in love with boldness and humility. 2. Every member is activated and a participant when you gather. No pew sitters. 3. Study the truth with Holy Spirit, and stop taking other people's word for it. 4. Not building your own little empire, and start believing your own press. What are some unhealthy or healthy ways of leadership that you have encountered?

Harvey Whitehouse | Anthropology, University of Oxford, UK"Against Interpretive Exclusivism"Interpretive exclusivism is the claim that studying cultural systems is exclusively an interpretive exercise, ruling out reductive explanation and scientific methods. Following the lead of Robert N. McCauley and E. Thomas Lawson, I will argue that the costs of interpretive exclusivism are heavy and the benefits illusory. By contrast, the intellectual benefits of combining interpretivist and scientific approaches are striking. By generating rich descriptive accounts of our social and cultural worlds using interpretive methods, we are better able to develop precise and testable hypotheses, increasing the value and relevance of a qualitative approach to the more quantitative branches of social science focusing on causal inference. Interpretive scholarship can also contribute to the design of experiments, surveys, longitudinal studies, and database construction. By helping to strengthen the scientific foundations of social science, the interpretive enterprise can also make itself more relevant to society at large, to the policy community, and to the marginalized and oppressed groups it frequently purports to represent or defend. Since science is an inherently generalizing and inclusive activity, working more closely with the scientific community will help to make the methods of interpretive scholarship more transparent, reproducible, and accessible to all.

Here the focus moves primarily to "true" when it comes to people, families, members of our congregations, and others. Dan and Mark also spend some time on the issue of "exclusivity" when it comes to propositional truth claims as well as individuals. What shall we do when some entity or person is described as the "only" way to salvation, one's one and only true love, and so forth. In that section, Mark introduces us to great ideas and phrasings from Marcus Borg and John Hick. Please enjoy! Tell others about this discussion!

John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him.  There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me.”  Mark 9:38-39This passage offers us a lesson in jealousy or what we may call “exclusivism.”  John and the other Apostles witness someone with whom they were not familiar, doing the very good deed of driving out a demon in Jesus' name.  It's a somewhat strange image to imagine.  John sees this good act and tries to interfere by asking the person to stop.  Then he goes and tells on this man to Jesus, hoping Jesus will intervene.  But Jesus does the opposite.   In some ways, this story is similar to a child who tattles on a sibling.  Say that one sibling does something that is permitted by the parent, but another sibling is jealous of it.  The result is that the jealous sibling tattles for a silly reason.“Exclusivism” can be defined as a tendency to think that something is good only when I do it.  It's a form of spiritual greed in which we have a hard time rejoicing in and supporting the good deeds of another.  This is a dangerous but all too common struggle for many. The ideal, in our Christian life, is to look for the works of God everywhere and within everyone.  We should so deeply desire that the Kingdom of God be built up that we are overjoyed whenever we witness such activity.  If, on the other hand, we find ourselves jealous of another for the good that they do, or if we find ourselves trying to find fault with what they are doing, then we should be aware of this tendency and claim it as our sin, not theirs.Reflect, today, upon your own reaction toward the goodness of others.  Are you able to rejoice in that goodness?  Or does it leave you with a certain jealousy or envy?  If the latter, then commit yourself to the goal of being freed from these temptations.  Our divine Lord desires that you participate in His good works.  You should seek to have that same desire. My freeing Lord, when I am jealous of others, especially when I am jealous of their good works, help me to see this as my sin.  Help me instead to look for the many wonderful ways that You are at work in our world, and help me to rejoice in all that You do through others.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2022 My Catholic Life! Christians aren’t supposed to say we have the one truth. That’s the word around our culture, anyway. We’re supposed to be “humble” about our beliefs; to give equal worth and respect to all other beliefs. That’s what culture tells us, but what does God say? Clearly Jesus claims to be the one way, the one truth, and the one life, through whom alone we can come to the Father. But how does that square with Christian humility? How do we live that out without arrogance? And why isn’t God like an elephant? You weren’t expecting that last question, I’m sure! That’s okay, it’s just a teaser to a fun part of this sample sermon on Christian Exclusivism vs. Religious Pluralism. I present this early in December, with a Christmas theme as part of it, but you can easily extract that part out and use the rest of it any time of the year. This comes to you in cooperation with The Stream, where you'll find a wealth of accompanying information, in the form of a one-page summary “explainer” article covering this material and more, with links in it to all the supporting documentation you could want in order to make sure you're representing the truth in this message if you use it. Also here at Thinking Christian, find a written version of this sample sermon. We invite you to use this, not just as information but as a sample sermon. We do ask that in your bulletin and online postings you give credit to Tom Gilson and to The Stream, with whom this work is being done in cooperation, with links both to The Stream and to this podcast page. Check out the Thinking Christian blog for a written form of this sample sermon as well. If you're not a pastor, please consider yourself a member of the congregation listening and learning. You're most welcome here! And then do please send this podcast to your pastor. There'll be more like it to come!

Born to Win Podcast - with Ronald L. Dart

One of the truly pivotal events of the New Testament church was a conference that took place some 18 years or so after the church began on the Day of Pentecost. It is often referred to as the Jerusalem Conference, and it seems odd in a way that it took this long for it to occur. By most accounts, the year was ad 49.What was at stake (and it is astonishing to say it) was whether the gospel could continue to go to the gentiles. Think about it. Jesus had said to Go and make disciples of all nations, and yet, for some reason, some people in the church didn't think that should happen. Paul defined the issue in his letter to the church in Galatia. He said that, some 14 years after his conversion, he went up to this conference, along with Barnabas and Titus. All this had to be done because some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. Strong words, these, and Paul went on to say, To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.And that defines the issue: whether or not the gospel was intended for Gentiles at all. It seems incredible to us today to imagine that anyone could think that way, but indeed some did. The events that led up to this day started, actually, in the second chapter of Acts…

Why do people claim that all religions teach essentially the same fundamental truths? It is tempting for those who have not committed themselves to a single worldview to claim this because they have an incomplete, even shallow, perspective of the major claims of various world religions. They also may just want to avoid controversy and see the value of each type of diverse person. However! Does this claim align with logic, with fundamental religious claims, and can it withstand the claimant's own scrutiny? No. Occasionally. And no. Here is how we can highlight the major differences between religions is a way that includes disjunctive logic. Here is also a Christian perspective on the fundamental worldview differences.

John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him.  There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me.”  Mark 9:38-39This passage offers us a lesson in jealousy or what we may call “exclusivism.”  John and the other Apostles witness someone with whom they were not familiar, doing the very good deed of driving out a demon in Jesus’ name.  It’s a somewhat strange image to imagine. It’s a form of spiritual greed in which we have a hard time rejoicing in and supporting the good deeds of another. You should seek to have that same desire.Lord, when I am jealous of others, especially when I am jealous of their good works, help me to see this as my sin.  Help me instead to look for the many wonderful ways that You are at work in our world, and help me to rejoice in all that You do through others.  Jesus, I trust in You.

There are multiple aspects to this concern. One is that “inherently by being religious you’re X religion and therefore not Y religion, placing people into categories or camps of Us and Them, which makes religion essentially divisive.” So to be secular is seen as being neutral. Mormon Matters - (Dan Wotherspoon ARCHIVE)

This episode wrestles with exclusivist claims in religion, including Mormonism, as well as in our psyches. How does the idea of chosenness, specialness, uniqueness, and being “right” or on the “true” path work in our minds and hearts in both positive and negative ways? Why do we want to cling to ideas that work to set us apart from others rather than unite us with the rest of humanity in struggling and wrestling with life's biggest questions? Why do so many of us focus on being "right" about the way things "really are" in the heavens? Does it make sense to skip the struggle of determining our own values and power in exchange for safety in some yet-unknown and indeterminate future? Being "the one and only true church" has played a fascinating role in Mormonism and in the lives of its adherents. And because of the power of this idea, many of us struggle when we are presented with alternate views that challenge its exclusivist claims. Do we "dare" explore these other areas more? Do we answer this deep call within us to become our "own" person rather than remain safely in the Mormon (or whatever religion one associates with) current, moving steadily ahead toward goals we have been taught were certain to be achieved if we keep with the group?  In this Mormon Matters discussion, two wonderful LDS therapists, Jennifer Finlayson-Fife and Lisa Tensmeyer Hansen, join host Dan Wotherspoon for a deep dive into the dynamics of exclusivism as they play out in Mormonism and in the deepest parts of ourselves. How can we trust ourselves to venture beyond the stories and assurances we've been given and not become lost? Is it a wrestle that all of us must eventually take on in order to be psychologically and mentally healthy? Are there ways that we are seeing Mormonism change with regard to exclusive truth claims that open up our Sunday and other LDS spaces for genuine exploration and wrestling rather than primarily being dedicated to shoring up truth claims? Finally, what good is the idea that we know the "Truth" anyway? How well does it serve us and our souls? Are there other types of searches that are far more important to embark on than seeking to "have all the answers"?

Finding a balance between loyalty or commitment to one’s faith and sympathetic openness to other faiths is one of the biggest challenges Mormons face in an age of inclusiveness. The classic “theology of religions” view of other faiths known as “inclusivism” broadly fits what Dr. Mauro Properzi thinks this balance should look like in an LDS context. The idea is that one’s faith is unique, most effective, and overall preferential (or one could use the term “truest”) in leading to our eternal destination. Other religions, however, while being positive paths that move as a whole in the same direction, lack some elements that characterize the faith you embrace. Perhaps other paths take unnecessary detours, perhaps they have holes that cause slower progress, perhaps they are not as scenic. Still, these roads are going in the same general direction as your road, not in the opposite one. In short, if your road leads to God, the other roads don’t lead to Satan; they are also oriented toward God. Inclusivism is the middle ground. Two other positions represent the ends of the spectrum of religious tolerance.  On one side is exclusivism, which in its bluntest form is the message that only my religion is good, true, divinely inspired, and salvific. At its opposite is pluralism with the message that all religions are true, divinely inspired, and salvific since it is believed that they teach the same message in different cultural contexts. What is clear is that in our postmodern Western culture many people, whether religious or not, lean in the direction of pluralism and exclusivism is not very popular. Exclusivism, however, is an important component of Christianity, and of Mormonism in particular; in fact, in the pursuit of truth in general. It is not the whole of the answer but it is a significant part of it. The challenge for us, and for any other person of faith who feels these tensions, is to be reflective about them and not succumb to pressures that aim to eliminate them. For us these pressures can come from social interactions both within the church and outside of it … pressures that want to obliterate one side or the other of the spectrum. Mormon Matters - (Dan Wotherspoon ARCHIVE)

One of the most difficult things for many who have begun to think deeply about religion--their own as well as others and the relationship between them--and want to maintain a positive relationship with the idea of religion is the specter of exclusivism: claims that one’s views or one’s church is "the" Truth, or the "best," while others are not or are lesser. Many religions make this claim either explicitly or tacitly, with Mormonism belonging to the first category, boldly declaring its special place as the possessor of priesthood keys and being the only church authorized by God to perform certain saving ordinances. One hears it quite often in LDS services and classes, and frequently in conjunction with language found in a particular scriptural passage, D&C 1:30: "And also those to whom these commandments were given, might have power to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity and out of darkness, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased, speaking unto the church collectively and not individually…" But do LDS scriptures really support a position of exclusivity? Does this passage really refer to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as "the only true and living church" with which God is pleased and through which Deity works to save people, or does LDS scripture actually point to something much more broad? In this episode, Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon and panelists Kristine Haglund and Charles Randall Paul complicate the idea of LDS exclusivity as even being scriptural (for so much else in Mormon holy writ suggests God has a much broader project in the works than what can be accomplished through just one organization) and challenge such a straightforward reading of the "only true and living . . . well pleased" passage. It’s an episode full of wonderful alternatives that reveal Mormon scripture to be much broader and LDS doctrines to be much more expansive and beautiful than we sometimes think they are. It’s definitely worth a close listen.
