Ty Cobb was one of the smartest baseball players of all time. He could stretch a single into a double. He could steal second, third, and home base all in the same at-bat. He used the threat of violence to intimidate other players and get what he wanted. He had a short fuse, so violence wasn't reserved for the basepaths. He fought with teammates, with fans, and with normal people just going about their business. He beat up hecklers with his bare hands. He pointed loaded guns at grocers. Some said he even killed a man who tried to rob him. Some of Ty Cobb's legend was fact, and some of it was fiction—but it was all part of the mythology that made him larger than life.Follow BADLANDS wherever you get your podcasts to hear new episodes of BADLANDS Season 2: SPORTSLAND each Wednesday. Conversation with Jim Carlock, author of “Looming Sterile Processing Staffing Crisis Requires Action Now”. You can read his article on the Beyond Clean blog here: https://www.beyondclean.net/post/staffingcrisis
"I believe the closer our industry moves toward rewarding fresh opinions, the more of them we will see in our frontline technicians, leaders, and innovators. The more we listen to new voices and outside perspectives, the better equipped our industry will become to handle the changing world around us. On the other hand, the harder we make it for individuals to grow and gain a platform for their opinions, the less likely they will be to engage in the future. Wherever you land on this spectrum, I challenge you to encourage your teams, organizations, and companies to be willing to speak up -- and more importantly, I challenge you to be willing to listen." For more on this conversation, tune in to this week's audio episode of Fighting Dirty with Hank Balch. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ #Opinion #Growth #Career
What needs to be said about the #SterileProcessing industry that hasn't been said yet? Who's voice needs a platform to share their passion for the mission of patient safety with a listening world? We asked these questions when Beyond Clean was founded nearly three years ago, and we continue to ask them each and every day. As the Beyond Clean revolution has continued to grow, the opportunities we have to promote best practices, magnify new voices, and engage with a diversity of subject matter experts in device reprocessing has gotten larger and larger. We believe that one person on a mission can literally change the world, and we have created a platform to make that as easy as possible for the innovators, leaders, and disruptors out there trying to make it happen. On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank and Justin sit down to discuss the various themes that they see coming out of podcast interviews and industry conversations on a regular basis. Everything from C-Suite involvement to mentorship could be the bridge that carries our teams over their current challenges and puts on a road to real success. Tune in for an insider's look on what we think is making our industry tick! #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty #SPD #CSSD #MDR #Themes #Passion #BestPractice #Innovation #Disruption #CSuite #Mentorship #Podcast #FightingDirty
What does it take to host successful in-department education for your Sterile Processing team? Are you tapping into all the available tools and resources out there to take your SPD training to the next level? On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank sits down with Justin to discuss inservices, podcast, and clinical training. Whether you are a vendor, department leader, or frontline technician, this one has a little bit of everything for everyone. Tune in and get #Educated. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ #Education #Training #Podcasts #Vendors #JustinPoulin #SterileProcessing #SurgicalInstruments
It's not rocket science and yet many hospital administrators just don't get it -- Sterile Processing departments need SUPERVISORS! AAMI ST79:2017 recommends it, ECRI makes it a point to spotlight, and the Joint Commission expects it. Plus there's something called common sense that tells us that constant interruptions of frontline staff to deal with "supervisory duties" takes these technician's minds and focus away from the detailed tasks in front of them. Supervisors are able to guard their teams from ancillary issues and enable their technicians to focus on getting the work done right and on time. Don't feel pressured by hospital leadership to make due without a department leader in SPD -- your team and your patients deserve better... #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™
Moment of truth here: Do you have any rusty instruments in your surgical trays? No, let's be honest. And if you have seen rusty instruments, what is stopping you from taking them out? On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank brings the skeleton out of the Sterile Processing closet and gives an argument for transparency that will better protect our patients and guard our facilities against liability. Recent research has shown large percentages of surgical inventory in the US is sub-quality and not fit for use -- and yet, they are being used on patients every single day. Tune in and let's talk about what it's gonna take to get it fixed. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™
Acts 6:8-15
Is that presentation CE approved? How many continuing education credits is it worth? Why on earth are these the first questions for so many of us in the Sterile Processing industry when confronted with education options? If all the potential industry education in the world were poured into the ocean, the portion that was CE-approved would fill up a shot glass. On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank hops up on one of his favorite soap boxes and lays out an argument for thinking bigger than any approval board, and pushing yourself to pursue education for the sake of learning, while looking at CE approval like the cherry on top instead of the whole education package. Tune in and let him know what YOU think. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™
How do you respond to hospital administrators or surgical leaders who brush aside your Sterile Processing requests or recommendations because your facility has "low surgical site infection (SSI) rates"? Is this a helpful measurement when department leaders are still voicing equipment, staffing, and other resource concerns? In this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank lays out a challenge for anyone trying to deny your department requests based on SSI rates alone. Tune in for some talking points for your next heart to heart with your surgical leaders, and be encouraged to stand your ground if you know your current processes aren't safe. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™
How many of you have ever read a brushing IFU for one of your instruments and wondered to yourself, "Who spends 60 seconds actually doing nothing by brushing the distal tip of this device?" Out of all the steps that could be skipped or short-circuited during manual cleaning, brushing is the most likely offender. We see it on a regular basis during onsite assessments, and if you have spent any time in an Endo or SPD department, you have likely seen non-compliant brushing as well. On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank gives a simple but hugely important encouragement: Don't rush the brush. Tune in and don't forget that every swipe of a bristle says "safety"... #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™
How did two guys who had never met, living on opposite sides of the country create a podcast what would take the Sterile Processing industry by storm in the summer of 2017? It had a lot to do with timing, a little to do with Linkedin, a good dose of bravery, and a whole lot of passion to provide a bigger platform for the kinds of conversations that matter to the medical device reprocessing industry. On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank (finally) gets Justin to join him in the studio for the first time ever to talk about the beginnings of Beyond Clean, how it all came together, and why they think even bigger things are coming in 2020. Tune in and get inspired to be brave & do big things! #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™
How do you get your Sterile Processing department's successes, updates, and requests in front of your hospital CEO, CNO, CFO, surgeons, Operating Room leadership, nurses, surgical technicians, and SPD staff? On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank talks about how to leverage the power of a department newsletter to shine a much needed spotlight on all the hard work your team is doing keeping patients safe in your hospital. As Sterile Processing professionals, something that we will always need is an advocate. We need people throughout our healthcare facilities to back us, to support us, and to help make the case for improvements throughout surgical services--especially Sterile Processing. On this episode, we talk with Melissa Morgan about the importance of Infection Prevention understanding the detailed work and the level of importance in Sterile Processing. Melissa gives an account of her journey from paramedic to nurse to Infection Preventionist and talks with us about what led her to learning about the Sterile Processing department. Infection Prevention can advocate for Sterile Processing and Melissa paints a picture of a collaborative and positive relationship that many Sterile Processing departments can use as a template for improving their connection with Infection Preventionists in your facilities. If you want to light a fuse under a Sterile Processing technician, call them a "glorified dishwasher." Few things seem to get under our skin quicker than this one phrase that has been weaponized by frustrated healthcare workers who don't value how CRITICAL we actually are to patient care, and how complex our jobs really can be. However, on this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank pushes back against our immediate response in a way that every SPD professional should listen to and take to heart. This is about more than just defending the importance of our work. It's about winning the war for true dignity & respect for every hospital team. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ Click To Subscribe on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or Spotify or Visit Our Website!

How many of your departments have an Instrument Coordinator position? How many of you want one? And how many of you have no idea what we're talking about? On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank makes an argument for creating a role on your Sterile Processing team whose primary focus is all things surgical instrument related. Buying, sourcing, standardizing, back order tracking, OR communicating, count sheet updating, and on and on. One job to rule them all. #InstrumentCoordinator #WhoIsThinkingAboutYourTrays #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ Click To Subscribe on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or Spotify or Visit Our Website!
Here we go again, on another one of those "but there's no rule that says I have to!" On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank talks about the common sense reasons you should be testing the sharpness of your scissors, every tray, every time. This isn't about being compliant, it's about being smart -- and being safe. After all, which one of us wants to put ourselves, our child, or our loved ones under anesthesia and then hand the surgeon a dull, burred scissor? #CutTheExcuses #TestTheScissors #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ Click To Subscribe on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or Spotify or Visit Our Website!
Is your instrument tracking system being used for nothing more than an expensive count sheet printer? Well, you're not alone! On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank talks about a staffing position that you can create in your Sterile Processing department that can help you get the most out of your big (!) investment in tracking technology. It's a job too big for a manager or frontline staff to do by themselves, so you should consider the role of an #InstrumentDatabaseSpecialist. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ Click To Subscribe on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or Spotify or Visit Our Website!
How often are you cleaning your steam autoclave chambers? How often should you be? Backup surgical instrument inventories can make or break your Sterile Processing department. A poorly designed or incomplete backup wall can create tremendous inefficiency and frustration for your team. A great backup wall and replenishment process can help to hardwire complete tray assembly and take mere seconds to find an instrument instead of causing serious impact to your workflow. On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank delves into the important details to consider in building your backup wall and hits some highlights to ensure you get it done right the first time. So much of what we do in the decontamination area depends on time. But how equipped are your frontline technicians to correctly and compliantly process when each second counts? Do they have the timing tools they need for each stage of the dirty side? One look inside of your cannulated or lumen devices could literally save your patient's life. So why wouldn't you take the time to do it? Or more importantly, why wouldn't hospitals provide appropriate tools such as inspection borescopes to enable their Sterile Processing teams to complete this live saving work? On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank talks about the critical importance of enhanced visual inspection of arthroscopic shaver handpieces in particular and all other related devices. The most valuable asset in your Sterile Processing department isn't your $250K cart washer or your $3.5 million dollar fleet of surgical instruments -- it's actually your people. So the important question is whether your department design is actually hurting your team. On this episode of Fighting Dirty, Hank gives some insight into the critical importance of ergonomics in Sterile Processing and the things every department should be doing to protect from injury and cultivate safe practices in the workplace. These things aren't good ideas, they are fundamental to demonstrating how much we really value our teams. Creating a great resume is one of the most important things you can do as a Sterile Processing professional who wants to grow. Sterile Processing professionals are the last line of defense for surgical patients. This means we have to be willing and able to "stop the line" when something unsafe happens in our departments. On this episode of Fighting Dirty with Hank Balch, Hank talks about one of the most dangerous and yet common practices in many departments today: double stacking multilayer trays during the washing cycle. This not only violates express manufacturer IFUs for these instruments and will get you cited by CMS, TJC, DNV and state agencies -- it is also extremely dangerous for your patients. One bug. One little infectious microbe hiding under a knee sizer can literally kill one of your patients. Whatever productivity pressures you may be under, whatever volume may be stacking up in decontam, washing shortcuts are not worth it. If you have to chain yourself to the department door in order to get your CEO to come listen to why you won't take shortcuts -- do it. And call us, we'll join you in the sit in, and help explain why you can't sacrifice safety in the name of speed. #FightingDirty #HankBalch #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty™ Click To Subscribe on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or Spotify or Visit Our Website!

Is it time for Democrats in Washington DC to shift their thinking about how they can win and maintain power? We talk this week with political scientist David Faris, author of the book, “It's Time to Fight Dirty: How Democrats Can Build a Lasting Majority in American Politics,” about the ways Republicans have used loopholes in the Constitution to their advantage, and how Democrats need to fight back by, among other things, passing a voting rights act, granting statehood to DC and Puerto Rico, expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court, and doubling the size of the House of Representatives, among other cures. All of this can only occur, of course, after Democrats have taken back Congress and the White House, and Faris also has several thoughts on how to make that happen.
