This Tuesday, 4, AMD introduced the next generation of processors named Ryzen 6000. These processing chips will have variations with up to 8 cores and 16 threads, and can reach frequencies of up to 5.0 GHz, something that would be unprecedented, with or without integrated video, from AMD. This would make it cheaper to build an 'online gaming computer', as the dedicated graphics chip would be a necessity only in high-end games. The new "Rembrandt" processor will require a new socket called the FP7, a factor that will require updating motherboards and RAM memories. Find out more by listening to this episode.

Kriben Govender (Honours Degree in Food Science & Technology) and James Shadrach (Honours Degree in Psychology) interview the father of Psychobiotics, Professor Ted Dinan.  We discuss how the gut and brain is connected, and the future of probiotics, prebiotics and food as a treatment option for IBS, anxiety, depression, stress and mood management.   Bio: Ted Dinan is Professor of Psychiatry at University College Cork. He was previously Chair of Clinical Neurosciences and Professor of Psychological Medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.  Prior to that, he was a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin.   He has worked in research laboratories on both sides of the Atlantic and has a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of London.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.  His main research interest is on the role of the gut microbiota in influencing brain function and development.  Within this context he has focused on depression and irritable bowel syndrome. He has made significant contributions to the literature on the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in situations of stress.  In 1995 was awarded the Melvin Ramsey Prize for this research into the biology of stress. His current research is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Health Research Board and the European Union through FP7.  He has published over 400 papers and numerous books on the pharmacology and neurobiology of affective disorders.   Research interests:   The “Brain-Gut-Microbe Axis” research  addresses the communication between the brain and gut and how it can be influenced by the gastrointestinal microbiota. This is an area of significance in infancy, where important links between diet, microbes and cognition are established. The influence of the microbiota on obesity and metabolic syndrome are also increasingly recognised. A better understanding of the role of this axis in the stress response, and its links with other debilitating psychiatric conditions, will help provide new treatment and management strategies – these will represent opportunities for both the food ingredients business and the pharmaceutical industry. Within this context papers Prof. Dinan’s group  have promoted the concept of Psychobiotics, probiotics that have a mental health benefit.   Professional activities: Prof. Dinan runs a clinic for treatment refractory depression at Cork University Hospital.  The research focus at this clinic is on biomarkers of response and the development of new therapies.   Publications: Please see  http://orcid.org/0000-0002-2316-7220   Topics discussed:   Brain Gut - Microbiome Axis What are Psychobiotics? Notre cerveau. Oxford Human Rights Hub Seminars
Accounting for Rights in EU Counter-Terrorism

On 5th June, Professor Fiona de Londras, from Durham Law School, gave a talk to the Oxford Human Rights Hub on the development of EU counter-terrorism measures. On 11 September 2001 the EU had no formal counter-terrorism law. Indeed, at that time even coordination in criminal justice generally speaking was contentious within the EU context. However, little more than a decade later the EU has a vast and well-developed body of law and policy on counter-terrorism comprising well over 200 ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ measures. Some, although not all, of these measures were introduced quickly and in the relatively immediate aftermath of the 11 September attacks; others have taken more time and been ground out at the slower pace of EU law-making that we are more accustomed to. However, in all cases concerns about the implications of EU counter-terrorism for the protection and enjoyment of rights have arisen. Professor de Londras considered the mechanisms by which rights are accounted for in EU counter-terrorism, critically assessing the practices of pre-legislative scrutiny and consultation, formal ex post facto assessment (on the rare occasions when it takes places), domestic analysis (by courts, parliament and statutory bodies), operational peer review processes, and analysis by the CJEU. Drawing on research from the FP7 project SECILE (Security Europe Through Counter-Terrorism: Impact, Legitimacy and Effectivenes), she identified serious deficiencies from a rights-based perspective at all of these levels (notwithstanding improvements post-Lisbon) and proposed structures for accounting more fully for rights within EU counter-terrorism.

OxFEST (Oxford Females in Engineering, Science and Technology) is an Oxford University society founded in 2005. Its initial vision was to promote and support women working in engineering and scientific disciplines within the university and its associated institutes. Dr Elizabeth Pollitzer is an expert advisor on technical and policy issues for the European Commision and is a founder member of Portia (www.portiaweb.org.uk) and director since 2001, an organisation which aims to advance women in STEM at all levels. In 2009, Portia coordinated an FP7 project on gender in science, genSET (www.genderinscience.org), which led Elizabeth the create the Gender Summit - Europe in 2009, as a platform for dialogue between scientists, policy makers and gender scholars featuring research evidence showing when, why and how gender issues are important in research and innovation quality, and establishing a consensus on what actions are needed to make improvements.

Dr Gary Palmer talks to ecancer at the 2012 WIN Symposium, Paris, about the FP7 project, WINTHER, which investigates next generation sequencing. The WINTer project uses next generation sequencing by using paraffin tissue; however, the information created must be able to translate for use by a clinical oncologist in a practical setting. Foundation Medicine’s involvement in the WINTHER trial is in the technology arm of the study, Arm A specifically. This involves identifying abnormalities in a patient’s tumour to better identify the best course of treatment. This can be used with either currently available drugs or drugs in clinical trials. Prof Julio Celis talks to ecancer about the advancements made after one year in the FP7 project, EurocanPlatform, at the European Forum on Oncology in Berlin, May 2012. Prof Celis, one of the original coordinators of EurocanPlatform, believes that many partner institutes have used the platform to share clinical data. The collaboration between institutes shows the potential for more clinical trials through the sharing of information through other communication platforms.
