In this week's Beyond Potential episode, we interview Gary Armstrong, a coach and consultant specialising in leadership development. Gary explains the concept of 'stuckness' - the ways individuals and teams can get stuck behaviourally and environmentally - and the importance of finding meaning and purpose in our work. In this conversation, he shares insights on how coaching can help individuals navigate career paths, especially during midlife transitions. We discuss the transformative impact of leadership development programmes, how the right person at the right time can significantly impact a person's career, and why it's so important to stay humble and keep learning in a volatile world. He also explains how running serves as a metaphor for life, through effort and reward! Allen is a Welshman and London Welsh man through and through. Played for Risca all the way through school and then decided to get out of the Wales bubble to further both his academic and rugby education up in Newcastle. This is the time when Newcastle Falcons where at the top of the Premiership with the help of the backing of Sir John Hall's investment and full of International players, like Johnny Wilkinson, Tom May, Doddie Weir and Gary Armstrong. He enjoyed his 5 years there, but was asked to come back to Wales to have a crack at getting in the Wales squad and signed for Celtic Warriors. That didn't work out, so he had 6 months playing for Gordon's in Australia and some time at Henley, where he first encountered playing at London Welsh. He then had a conversation with Adrian and realised he could play top quality rugby at Old Deer Park and begin his career in the city. He played under Adrian, Martin Jones and Danny Wilson before deciding to study for an MBA to further his career. What you hear in this interview, is how deep the friendships Allen made at London Welsh forged by training on Tuesday and Thursday, followed by long bus trips to Cornwall or up North, where you really get to know your team mates. A real pleasure to hear from Allen. Enjoy

Though he was raised in a good church and knew enough of the Bible, he strayed onto a path that led away from God and eventually to prison. But this was a turning point for Gary Armstrong. He remembered what he had learned about God's Word and way. The more he studied the Bible, the more he found hope, encouragement, and freedom. After prison, Gary had to adjust to a new life. He got married to Chela, got biblical training, and entered pastoral ministry, eventually landing in his present position as pastor of Burleson Bible Church in Texas. Advanced CCTV, security cordons and an £80 million pound electric fence: The security impact of the Olympics is already being felt in the London Borough of Newham. Security procedures are some of the most intense and developed in the world, designed to protect not only Olympic visitors but also future residents of the 40,000 new homes due to be completed by the end of the decade. Newham is one of the most impoverished areas in the country and the condition of its current residents stands in sharp contrast to the lives of people flooding into the borough for the Olympics. Laurie Taylor talks to Gary Armstrong about a large scale study of security, policing and the impact of the 'Regeneration Olympics' on the lives of the residents of Newham. Also on the programme, Laurie speaks to Jonathan Grix about 'sport under communism' and why East Germany was, for two decades, one of the most successful nations in the Summer and Winter Olympics. Producer: Jayne Egerton.
