The March 17, 2024 episode of Mic Check features an interview from 2020, when host Mike Merli was in conversation with Mariyann Soulemane, sister of Mubarak Soulemane, a 19 year-old Black Muslim teenager who was murdered by CT State Police (in collaboration with West Haven Police) on January 15, 2020. Mubarak Soulemane was 19 years old. Mubarak Soulemane was a student at Gateway Community College in New Haven. Mubarak Soulemane was an athlete, who loved playing basketball. Mubarak Soulemane was an entrepreneur, studying business. A teenager, with a heart of gold who would literally give the shirt off his back to help someone. And he did exactly that, on multiple occasions. His kindness and generosity are reflected in the many friends he had that mourn his loss. He had dreams of traveling the world. He had a family that loved him so much. And now all of that is gone for Mubarak. In a rare instance, Trooper Brian North was actually indicted on criminal charges for taking Mubarak's life. However, on Friday, a jury consisting of mostly older white men, rendered a NOT GUILTY verdict on all counts North was charged with. This summer, over 300 higher ed faculty, staff, and student leaders and activists from dozens of union locals in 30 states (representing over 400,000 higher ed workers!) came together to form a new nation-wide coalition: Higher Ed Labor United (HELU). Coming from across faculty ranks and staff job categories, including both tenure track and contingent faculty, undergraduate and graduate student workers, HELU is united in the belief that we need a higher education system that takes equity seriously, works for all, and puts the common good first. S&S conducts a deep dive conversation with leading organizers in HELU as we discuss the short-term and long-term strategies--from the campus to the U.S. Congress!--for restoring the vision, the resources, and the labor conditions that can allow our system of higher learning to work for us all, students, workers, and the communities we serve. Featured guests and respondent: Nicola Walters is an organizer artist, public speaker, and teacher. She is a lecturer in the Department of Politics and Department of Sociology at Humboldt State University. She serves on the California Faculty Association's board of directors as the Membership and Organizing Chair. Nicola is the co-chair of the Labor Outreach Committee for Higher Ed Labor United. Bryan Sacks is an adjunct instructor of philosophy at Drexel University, and also an adjunct instructor of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ. He also teaches philosophy at Rutgers' Camden campus. He is pursuing a Ph.D in Media Studies in the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers, where he is also the Vice President of the PTLFC-AAUP-AFT, the union of adjunct instructors. He's been an adjunct for 30 years, teaching more than 350 classes across several disciplines and more than a dozen universities in that time. Colena Sesanker is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Gateway Community College, Political Director for the 4Cs (SEIU1973), Faculty chair of the Faculty Advisory committee to the CT board of Regents, and a member of the Scholars for a New Deal for Higher Ed exec board. Nicole Braun (respondent) has been teaching sociology as a struggling and exploited adjunct for over 2 decades. She currently lives in Chicago and like many others, is tired of the status quo in academia and otherwise. She believes HELU brings hope and inspiration and that the movement is going to create real change and bring true justice for many who have been suffering for years.

CBS NEWS: "Louisville police detective will be fired over Breonna Taylor shooting" 3. AXIOS: "Trump warns protesters against coming to Tulsa rally" 4. USA TODAY: "Oklahoma coronavirus cases surge, hospitalizations rise ahead of Trump's Tulsa rally" Leslie is then joined by two 'Dreamers,' Maria Praeli and Maria Morales, who were directly impacted by yesterday's DACA Supreme Court decision. The high court ruled that the Trump administration improperly ended the "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" program, AKA DACA, in 2017. They discuss what yesterday's DACA Supreme Court victory means to them and their families, as well as President Trump saying that he'll renew his efforts to end DACA. They also talk about what others can do to help in the fight to protect Dreamers. Maria Praeli is Government Relations Manager for FWD.us, a bipartisan political organization that is working to fix the failed immigration and criminal justice systems that have locked too many out of the American dream for too long. Maria moved to the United States from Peru in 1999 when she was five years old to seek medical treatment for her sister, whose leg was amputated in a car accident. Maria's work at FWD.us focuses on strengthening outreach efforts to elected officials, providing education and resources on immigration policy to congressional offices, and working on special projects related to Dreamers and TPS holders. After moving from Peru, Maria attended public schools in Connecticut before earning an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Gateway Community College, and then a bachelor’s degree in political science from Quinnipiac University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her Twitter handle is @MariaPraeli, and the handle for FWD.us is @FWDus. Maria Morales is a DACA recipient and Teacher at Denver Public Schools. At an early age, Maria knew she wanted to become a teacher. Now that her dream is a reality and the future of DACA is uncertain, Maria fears leaving the classroom and abandoning her students. She moved to the United States with her family when she was only 12 years old. Her family was seeking a better life filled with opportunities for her and her siblings. Maria grew up and attended college in Greenwood, South Carolina. Her DACA status prevented her from paying in-state tuition and teaching in South Carolina, but this did not deter her from continuing her education and pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher. After graduating college, Maria decided to join Teach For America and teach in Colorado. Maria loves the community she is serving, she has built strong relationships with families and students and for her home is here, where her students are.

This week, we have updates from the front lines of the battle over immigration policy. An African immigrant tries to cross into Quebec, nearly freezing to death in the process, and a Syrian family just barely skirts a travel ban to come to Connecticut. We also try and answer two tricky questions: Why is Vermont so very white, and whatever happened to Boston’s Black renaissance? Plus, the climate’s getting warmer. Can we start our seedlings yet? Photo by Kathleen Masterson for NENC Many recent immigrants living in the U.S. are scared that their claims for asylum won’t have a fair hearing by the Trump administration. Hundreds  are fleeing to Canada. As we’ve reported, many migrants are heading straight to illegal border crossings, knowingly walking into arrest, for a chance to make their claims in Canada. This week, we have the story of a man who was turned away at an official border checkpoint, but tried to make it into Canada anyway, with disastrous consequences. From Vermont Public Radio, Kathleen Masterson reports. If the last few months has been confusing and concerning to those seeking asylum here, it's also thrown the process of resettling refugees into chaos. Courts have twice blocked the administration’s executive orders imposing a travel ban on visitors from a group of majority Muslim countries. The judge’s orders — at least temporarily — lift a cap on refugees. Mona’s tea service was one of the only non-essential items she was able to pack when she left Jordan last month. She serves tea and brownies to guests in her new apartment. Photo by Kaari Pitkin for WNYC The Connecticut-based nonprofit resettlement group IRIS said this week that new refugee arrivals are being booked, at least through April 28, although that's subject to change. WNYC reporter Kaari Pitkin has been following the story of one family that just arrived in Connecticut. Read and listen to more immigration stories from the New England News Collaborative series Facing Change. And if you’re in the area, join us Monday for our next discussion of what makes a sanctuary city at Gateway Community College in New Haven, Connecticut, moderated by NEXT host John Dankosky and WSHU reporter Cassandra Basler.  The event starts at 5:30 pm and is free and open to the public. Find out more. #VermontSoWhite A mural in a meeting room at the town offices in Hartford, Vermont portrays familiar images of the “typical” Vermonter. Photo by Angela Evancie for VPR Last week we learned about the tradition of town meeting in Vermont, where residents hash out their differences to pass a budget and come up with local laws. But one thing most town meeting attendees, and most Vermonters, have in common is skin color. As of the 2010 census, the state was over 95 percent white. The whiteness of northern New England states is a reality many of us take for granted. Not so Brave Little State, the podcast from Vermont Public Radio that digs deep to answer listeners' questions about the Green Mountain State. Their most recent episode takes up the question “Why is Vermont so overwhelmingly white, and how does that affect all of us?” We’re thrilled to welcome Brave Little State host Angela Evancie back to NEXT to discuss her findings. (We highly recommend you listen to Angela’s original podcast episode, too.) Black Bostonians From the Jazz Age to the New Deal A staging of the play “Antar of Araby” by Maud Cuney Hare, 1930. Courtesy of Thelma Thorton Wynn for Black Bostonians and the Politics of Culture 1920-1940. Today, African Americans make up about 28 percent of Boston's population. But in the 1920s and ’30s, they were only about three percent. Opportunities to gain political power were limited, but black Bostonians left their mark through the arts. It's a period that mirrored the Harlem Renaissance in New York, but had its own distinctly Boston flavor. This period had also been largely overlooked, until now. Our guest Lorraine Elena Roses is the author of the new book Black Bostonians and the Politics of Culture 1920 -1940. Is It Spring Yet? Those early hints of spring can call to a gardener like a siren song. Yet the urge to get one's seeds into dirt can be dangerous: most seedlings won't survive a single frost. To help with that, gardeners use 30-year averages that predict when the last frost will probably occur. The thing is, in New England, climate change has temperatures rising relatively quickly. That left New Hampshire Public Radio reporter Emily Corwin with a question. About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR.
