This week, Mark talks with Phil Root about the differences he sees between teaching using modeling methodology at the high school level and the college level. They talk about Phil's experience helping to adapt modeling materials for physical science to the Next Generation Science Standards, and how much he enjoyed building a storyline for those units. They talk about the advanced modeling workshops, including the new materials Phil helped to develop for them, and the various topics covered. They finish with Phil's advice for folks just starting out on a modeling instruction journey. Guests Phil Root Phil Root taught high school chemistry and physics at Chandler High School from 2004-2013, and has been teaching chemistry at Scottsdale Community College since 2013. Phil teaches using modeling methods at the college level, and also leads modeling workshops. He helped to develop the physical science curriculum for Next Generation Science Standards and worked with Levi Torrison to develop a thermodynamics modeling workshop and extend the Chem 2 workshop to a full three week course. Website Highlights [11:05] Phil Root: "AMTA was actively engaging students before it was cool." [17:08] Phil Root, on advanced modeling workshops: "you will have activities, labs, facilitation experience that you can take with you directly back to your classroom the next year and put it to place right away to build your storyline in your classroom and make it stronger." [19:13] Phil Root: "My goal now isn't to get my students to solve a problem a certain way or to get an answer. It's to probe their thinking about the relationships that they're using or how are they making sense of the mathematical relationships they're using or the conceptual frameworks that they're building." In this episode, Mark talks with Mitch Sweet, who teaches using modeling methodology at Scottsdale Community College. They discuss his journey with modeling, and the many workshops he attended before becoming a workshop facilitator. They talk about building a community of modelers and the differences between high school and college. Finally, they talk about the work that Mitch and others have done researching the effectiveness of using proportional reasoning to get students to link about how changing one variable would affect the other, rather than just blindly plugging numbers into an algorithm. Guests Mitch Sweet Mitch has been teaching, primarily chemistry, for the past 15 years at both the high school and college level. He took his first Modeling workshop in 2010 and began co-leading Chemistry Modeling workshops in 2016. Mitch currently teaches Fundamental Chemistry and General Chemistry I and II at Scottsdale Community College. Highlights [7:37] Mitch Sweet "the idea is, no matter what it is we're doing in life, we're constantly building models in our head of how we think things work. And that's sort of inherent in the nature of learning." [11:44] Mitch Sweet "we're trying to build a culture with our students where they're really responsible for their own learning, and we're trying to get them to be independent thinkers and to be able to engage with their fellow classmates." [33:41] Mitch Sweet "so getting students to share, getting students comfortable with putting things out there that they're maybe not a hundred percent sure of is a really important part of building the culture within the class. And we found it is more than worthwhile, that investment of time" Resources Download Transcript Ep 48 Transcript Links [Paper] David Hestenes - Wherefore a Science of Teaching
Dennis Rowland, Detroit's own legendary jazz vocalist, calls me into the band room at Scottsdale Community College for a chat. He shares (and sings) his early musical memories, including his first 45, singing classical music in high school, shipping off to Kentucky State University for music, his first paid gig at Joe's Palm Room in Louisville, and landing the gig singing with the Count Basie Orchestra. It's not often you get a chance to rap with a legend, and I feel honored and humbled to have spent this time with him. He also speaks candidly about his stroke in 2012 and how he got back on his feet to sing again. Dennis is still gigging to this day and you owe it to yourself to listen to him perform.

This week Dr. Jasser looks at the Islamist terror attack and assassination attempt against Salman Rushdie. He will answer questions very few have addressed. What in God's name will it take to get the West unsettled? How this attack in more ways than one demonstrates how miserably the West has let its guard down. Why free speech is central battlefront against political Islam and its global jihad. How do the domestic and global military and theological fronts in the war of ideas against Islamists in Iran all come to head in what happened to Sir Salman Rushdie. Why does France put Britain and the rest of the West to shame in how they have finally confronted Islamism. Zuhdi also looks at CAIR's loss in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in its efforts to muzzle and punish a professor of politics and terrorism at Scottsdale Community College. Why should all anti-jihadist activists be unsettled by the attack and its muted fallout? Keywords: Salman Rushdie, Iran, Khomeini, Fatwa, Hadi Matar, free speech, terrorism, Islamism, political Islam, Islamists, liberty, CAIR, AIFD, Zuhdi Jasser, terrorism Learn more about your ad choices. FTGOTG S2, E7 | Episode 7 demonstrates why the game of football and the coaching profession are a perfect marriage. Our conversation with Coaches Art Kehoe and Mark Evans is not just about University of Miami football. It's a celebration of the memories and respect two colleagues (former coach and player) can build and maintain!Coach Art Kehoe played as a 2-year letterman and Captain at the University of Miami. He began his coaching career as a Student Assistant for the Canes in 1981, while finishing up his degree. Art spent the next 20+ years working his way up through the staff at Miami, culminating with being the Assistant Head Coach & OL Coach from 2002 - 2005. He's had the honor and privilege of coaching All-Conference honorees, All-Americans, as well as Outland and Remington Trophy award winners...not to mention the 20+ players he coached and mentored on their way to playing in the NFL. Coach Kehoe was on the staff for all five of Miami's National Championships and he was appropriately enshrined in the UM Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002!Coach Mark Evans is a School Counselor and the current Head Football Coach at Manheim Township HS in Lebanon, PA. With 23+ years as a Counselor and High School Head Coach, he has accumulated a tremendous track record of success both on and off the field. The students and athletes who join Mark's "huddle" benefit from his experience, calm demeanor, as well as his confident, caring approach. Coach Evans' start in football was anything but typical, having played only his Senior year in High School. After graduating, he ventured to Scottsdale Community College in Arizona to hone his skills and seek opportunities. Mark's hard work and relative improvement garnered multiple D-1 offers, but he chose to join "The U" to pursue his college career. His friendship with Coach Kehoe began in Arizona during a recruiting visit and (as they say)...the rest is history!Regardless of how long they go between conversations, these two maintain a strong bond of respect for one another. Their relationship is emblematic of the trust and loyalty that is possible in the great game of football...two competitors learning and growing together, each changing the game...and the world in his own unique way!Intro music "Next Level" used under license by Composer Rujay Torres.

Don’t miss this week’s episode as Dr. Jasser looks at the radical Islamist imams chosen to represent American Muslims on the platform of the the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and what that means about the party’s opinion of American Muslim diversity. Zuhdi also looks at how CAIR-Arizona was swiftly handed its proverbial derrière this week by a U.S. District court after its bullying and lawsuit against a professor at Scottsdale Community College. This was truly a vindication for academic freedom and a defeat of domestic and global Islamists conveniently ignored by the very media that amplified the original specious claims of the Islamists to start. This week, Dr. Jasser gives you the latest on how local Islamists in Arizona have expanded their war on academic freedom and free speech against Scottsdale Community College, Dr. Damask and Arizona taxpayers. CAIR and their hired guns have now filed a frivolous lawsuit in US District Court of all things, wrapping themselves in the Establishment Clause, which Islamists and their Islamic states reject. Don’t miss this clinic into Islamist lawfare and learn how Islamists only know bullying and intimidation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Join Dr. Jasser this week as he looks at how virtual worship practices among some Muslim communities during the lockdowns has exposed their theocratic and draconian realities to the world. Zuhdi exposes them and takes them to task. Dr. Jasser also gives a refreshing follow up on the story of the Scottsdale Community College professor, Dr. Damask, thrown initially to the Islamist mobs by his school. Last, Dr. Jasser, a primary care physician, reflects upon the damage done to free speech, academic inquiry, and the weaponization of medical science during the COVID-19 lockdowns across the country. Dr. Jasser breaks a story about Nick Damask, Ph.D., a local professor of Political Science at Scottsdale Community College who found himself, overnight, the subject of an Islamist global intimidation mob after a student from his online course on World Politics had screen shots of 3 quiz questions posted on Instragram. Without any evidence of due process or grievance procedures followed, Scottsdale Community College leadership threw their professor under the proverbial bus within 48 hours online and also insisted that he throw himself to the feet of the student and his global Islamist mob. Predictably, appeasement enraged the mob further. There is no better clinic into how academic weakness chills academic freedom and actually ends up radicalizing Muslims than this breaking story in Scottsdale, Arizona— Dr. Jasser’s backyard. Although he was offered several major Div 1 scholarships, he chose to attend the University of Miami and play for Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson. While Mark was earning a BA in History/Education, he was blessed to play on both the 1987 & 1989 National Championship teams at Miami.Mark began his coaching career as a GA at Shippensburg University, while earning a Masters in Education/Secondary School Counseling. He was eventually hired by his HS Alma Mater as a school counselor, while he simultaneously coached offensive line at Lebanon Valley College. After four years at Lebanon Valley, Mark was offered the opportunity and accepted the Head Coach job at Eastern Lebanon County HS (ELCO) and was the Head Football Coach and a school counselor there for 14 years. He is a past President of the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association and has been either Head or Assistant coach on numerous All-Star Teams and Bowl Games. Rebecca Hardcastle Wright, PhD, founded the Institute for Exoconsciousness to research and apply the abilities of human consciousness sourced in extraterrestrial contact. She created the concept of Exoconsciousness to study of the extraterrestrial origins, dimensions and abilities of human consciousness.Rebecca's signature is bridging consciousness science and extraterrestrial experiencers. Her work encourages us to explore the questions: Do humans have an innate ability to experience extraterrestrial contact? And if so, how does it manifest and what are the implications for our species, our planet and the universe?Exoconsciousness is confirmation of humanity's relationship with the Extraterrestrial Presence. At its heart, it is a social, cultural movement that joins with consciousness scientists, energy healers, spiritual beings, paranormal researchers and near death experiencers to transform how we know ourselves. Her research has broad implications for brain-based neuroscience, transhumanism and quantum based cosmic consciousness. Rebecca's commitment is helping ET experiencers live healthy, integrated and affirmed lives--finding their voice, their power, their community. For Rebecca, the most important thing is "the work of investigating through science and experiences that our human species is created, equipped to experience ET Contact--and that this ability is sourced in our consciousness--our Exoconsciousness." Exoconsciousness normalizes psychic abilities, superpowers, once thought beyond human capacity, as essential for a 21st century species in direct contact with extraterrestrials. She refers to this holistic integration of ET contact experiences that accelerates higher consciousness as "living in the non-local with your feet on the ground." Her research focuses on telepathic communication as well as psychokinesis and the creation of a consciousness craft for space travel.Rebecca is the author of Exoconsciousness: Your 21st Century Mind (2008). In this emerging field, she collaborates with consciousness scientists associated with Quantrek,a zero point energy research group, and the Institute of Noetic Sciences. She is a frequent guest on radio talk shows, appears in films and is a featured keynote speaker. In 2005, Rebecca taught one of the first ufology courses in the United States at Scottsdale Community College, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Currently, she is on the faculty of International Metaphysical University (IMU), where she teaches Exoconsciousness. Rebecca has extensive experience working with UFO and extraterrestrial experiencers. Practicing as a healer, coach and hypnotherapist, Rebecca, a life-long ETI experiencer, developed the field of Exoconsciousness while working with UFO and extraterrestrial contactees. Rebecca trained with Ruth Hover, PhD, who was affiliated with Harvard's John Mack, MD and his Program for Extraordinary Experience Research (PEER). Raised in Clarksburg and Buckhannon, West Virginia, Rebecca then moved to Dayton, Ohio. While living in Phoenix, Arizona, Rebecca was active in the Phoenix Lights community who witnessed the largest and longest mass UFO sighting in the United States. Currently she lives in Washington, DC. Rebecca received her bachelor's degree in philosophy and religion from Otterbein University. She studied continental philosophy (Karl Jaspers concentration) at the Institute for European Studies in Basel, Switzerland. She received a Master of Divinity in philosophical theology at Boston University School of Theology. Rebecca received her doctorate in Parapsychic Science from American Institute of Holistic Theology. She earned her hypnotherapy and life coaching certification from Southwest Institute of Healing Arts.

Exoconsciousness normalizes psychic abilities, superpowers, once thought beyond human capacity, as essential for a 21st century species in direct contact with extraterrestrials. She refers to this holistic integration of ET contact experiences that accelerates higher consciousness as "living in the non-local with your feet on the ground." Her research focuses on telepathic communication as well as psychokinesis and the creation of a consciousness craft for space travel. Rebecca is the author of Exoconsciousness: Your 21st Century Mind (2008).
