What the Riff?!?
1967 - December: The Young Rascals "Groovin'"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2025 31:47

The Young Rascals were one of the early groups which would define the genre of "blue eyed soul."  For a period of two to three years, this group would generate hit after hit.  Their third album, Groovin', would close out the era in which they were known as “The Young Rascals,” because follow-up albums would see them using simply the name "The Rascals."  Felix Cavaliere was a classically trained pianist, and joined a band called the Starliters, where he met David Brigati and his younger brother Eddie.  Cavaliere convinced Eddie Brigati and guitarist Gene Cornish to leave the Starliters and form a band, recruiting jazz drummer Dino Danilli to flesh out the band.  They called themselves "Them" until they found out that a group out of the UK was already using that name (Van Morrison's band).  They settled on "The Young Rascals" when comedian Soupy Sales used them as his back-up band when he toured the college circuit in 1965.Much of this album is a collection of singles rather than a cohesive piece of music.  Eight of the eleven songs are either A-side or B-side single releases. The Rascals moved into a more psychedelic direction after this album, and they would be largely done by the early 70's.  They were early inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, receiving that honor in 1997.Bruce presents this soulful album for this week's podcast.Groovin'This signature song from the group almost didn't make it as a single.  Atlantic Records pushed back on this track because it was very different from the sound of their other songs, having a more Latin influence.  The inspiration for the lyrics was Cavaliere's girlfriend Adrienne Buccheri.  He only got to see her on Sundays because he was so occupied with the group, music, and touring on other days. You Better RunMany listeners who grew up in the 80's will be more familiar with Pat Benatar's cover of this song than the Young Rascals' original.  It was released a year before the album as a single, in May 1966.  The song has more of a garage band feel than other songs on the album.A Girl Like YouThis is the lead-off song for the album, and went to number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Upbeat, feel good, this is the opening song of new love.  It starts off subdued with piano and vocals, then builds into the horns and percussion.  If You KnewThis song was released as the B-side to the single "I've Been Lonely Too Long" from their previous album called Collections.  It is the only song on the album to be listed as written by all member of the band.  Most songs were written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel (from the motion picture “The Graduate”) Dustin Hoffman's got his breakthrough role in this coming of age film.  STAFF PICKS:Green Tambourine by the Lemon PipersRob leads off the staff picks with the best known song from a short-lived Ohio band.  Unfortunately the success of this song would cause the record company to pigeonhole the group into doing more songs in the psychedelic genre.  The group was unenthusiastic about this direction, and would leave the label in 1969, dissolving shortly thereafter.Sunshine of Your Love by CreamLynch brings us a signature song from the original supergroup.  The song arose out of a bass riff that Jack Bruce created after seeing Jimi Hendrix for the first time.  Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton take turns with vocals while Ginger Baker utilizes a tribal beat on percussion.I Can See for Miles by The WhoWayne features the only single from the Who album “The Who Sell Out.“  Although it went to number 9 on the US charts, guitarist and writer Pete Townshend expected it to do much better.  The Who made use of the studio as an instrument on this heavier, psychedelic song, using techniques similar to the Beach Boys and the Beatles at the time.I Second That Emotion by Smokey Robinson & the MiraclesBruce closes out the staff picks with a song that originated from a trip Smokey Robinson and Al Cleveland took to a Detroit department store in search of a gift for Robinson's wife Claudette.  When Robinson told the salesman of a set of pearls, "I sure hope she likes them," Cleveland accidentally said "I second that emotion," rather than "I second that motion."  The two laughed about it and wrote this song which would go to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Hip Hug-Her by Booker T. & the M.G.'sWe close out with a funky instrumental which was on the charts at the time.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Discover who wrote most of the Rascals songs. Find out what ex lead singer and founder Felix Cavaliere is doing now and learn all about one of the greatest bands of the '60s. Felix Cavaliere is a celebrated musician, songwriter, and vocalist, widely regarded as a pioneer of blue-eyed soul. Born in Pelham, New York, Cavaliere was introduced to music at an early age, taking classical piano lessons under his mother's encouragement. While initially drawn to classical music, he soon discovered his passion for rhythm and blues, inspired by legends like Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye. Cavaliere pursued pre-med studies at Syracuse University but found himself increasingly immersed in music, forming his first band, The Escorts, while still in college. His decision to follow his musical aspirations led him to New York City's thriving music scene in the early 1960s. In 1965, Cavaliere co-founded The Rascals (originally called The Young Rascals) with Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish, and Dino Danelli. The group became synonymous with the era's evolving rock and soul movement, producing a string of iconic hits that combined soulful melodies with socially conscious lyrics. Cavaliere's distinctive voice and masterful Hammond organ playing defined hits like "Good Lovin'," which topped the charts in 1966, followed by enduring classics like "Groovin'," "A Beautiful Morning," and "People Got to Be Free." The latter, inspired by the civil rights movement, became an anthem for unity and social justice. As the principal songwriter for The Rascals, Felix played a crucial role in shaping the band's innovative sound, which bridged the gap between rock and R&B. The Rascals enjoyed commercial success, releasing six gold albums and earning a devoted following. However, internal tensions and changing musical landscapes led to the band's breakup in the early 1970s. After The Rascals disbanded, Cavaliere embarked on a solo career, releasing several albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His solo work, including tracks like "Only a Lonely Heart Sees," reflected his evolving artistry, blending soulful ballads with pop-rock influences. Felix also collaborated with numerous artists, including Todd Rundgren and Steve Cropper, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and respected musician. In 1997, Cavaliere and his fellow Rascals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their place in music history. The band reunited in 2013 for a critically acclaimed multimedia concert series, Once Upon a Dream, produced by Steven Van Zandt. The reunion celebrated their groundbreaking legacy and brought their music to a new generation of fans. Beyond his achievements with The Rascals, Cavaliere remains an active performer and advocate for music education. He continues to tour, sharing his timeless songs with audiences worldwide. Cavaliere's influence on rock and soul endures, with his groundbreaking contributions inspiring countless artists and fans. Today Felix Cavaliere calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He's also finishing his memoir and has an active tour schedule with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Rock and Roll Legend, Felix Cavaliere, Founding Member, “The Rascals” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Felix Cavaliere, is a legendary musician and singer-songwriter whose illustrious 5-decade career began as a backup musician for Joey Dee and the Starliters, but very quickly evolved into the creation of one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time:  The Rascals.   His pioneering musicianship on the keys of the Hammond B-3 electric organ, together with his rich, powerful R & B vocals gave the Rascals their signature sound, which was pure magic, in a long string of hits including “Good Lovin”, “I've Been Lonely Too Long”, “Groovin”, “How Can I Be Sure”, “A Girl Like You”, “A Beautiful Morning”, and “People Got to be Free”.  Our guest, together with his bandmates Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish – better known as The Rascals - are widely considered to be the very first REAL Rock & Roll band, and they were without question the best “blue eyed soul” group to emerge in the 60's.    Their song “Good Lovin”, originally recorded by “The Olympics”, is listed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the top 500 songs that shaped Rock & Roll.  And Rolling Stone included it on their list of the Greatest Songs of All Time.  And the song “Groovin” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.  Since the Rascals broke up in 1972, our guest has had a hugely successful solo career, with 7 albums including his self-titled album “Felix Cavaliere”, “Destiny”, “Treasure”, “Castles in the Air”, “Dreams in Motion”, “Nudge it up a Notch”, which got a Grammy nomination, and “Midnight Flyer”.   He continues to perform across the country and around the world for sell-out crowds with his band “Felix Cavaliere's Rascals”.  And last year, he released a highly compelling, deeply personal and very moving book entitled, “Memoir of a Rascal”, which is truly one of the most poignant and spiritually uplifting memoirs I've ever read.  The list of accolades this man has received is staggering.   As a member of the Rascals, he's been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,  the Hit Parade Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.   And as an individual, he's also been inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Hammond Organ Hall of Fame.  And of equal importance, in 2015 he received the Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award from the World Hunger Association, in recognition of his well-known efforts to make the world better, kinder and more generous.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.felixcavalieremusic.com/https://www.facebook.com/felixcavalieresrascals/https://twitter.com/FelixCavalierehttps://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/felix-cavaliere/id1156746https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvLNn2Gwu8mJaWWvjScjR6w #FelixCavaliere   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Thai cover version of Elvis' "Little Sister" Silver Apples - Oscillations (1968) Silver Apples - Program (1968) Silver Apples - I Don't Care What The People Say  (1998) Silver Apples-  You and I (1969) Decades after their brief yet influential career ground to a sudden halt due to being sued for exorbitant amounts by Pan Am Airlines, Silver Apples remain one of pop music's true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms and electronically-generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. Silver Apples was formed in New York in 1967 and comprised percussionist Danny Taylor and lead vocalist Simeon, who played an instrument also dubbed the Simeon, which (according to notes on the duo's self-titled 1968 debut LP) consisted of "nine audio oscillators and eighty-six manual controls... The lead and rhythm oscillators are played with the hands, elbows and knees and the bass oscillators are played with the feet." Although the utterly uncommercial record — an ingenious cacophony of beeps, buzzes, and beats — sold poorly, the Silver Apples resurfaced a year later with their sophomore effort, 'Contact', another far-flung outing which fared no better than its predecessor. This record's cover, depicting the duo in the cockpit of a Pan Am airplane, resulted in a legal battle that left the band unable to continue recording and releasing music. However, in 1996 the Silver Apples resurfaced, as Simeon and new partner Xian Hawkins released the single "Fractal Flow." American and European tours followed, and a year later a new LP, 'Beacon', was released to wide acclaim.  Simeon Coxe died on September 8, 2020. Wendy & Bonnie - The Winter Is Cold (1969) From Under The Radar: Genesis, released in 1969, was the one and only album from sisters Wendy and Bonnie Flower. The San Francisco-based siblings were 18 and 15 at the time the album was originally released, and the music of Genesis belies their tender ages. The songs on Genesis are light psychedelic folk, reminiscent of artists like The Free Design, Tim Buckley, and, to a certain degree, fellow Californians, The Mamas and the Papas. The sisters' harmonies are the main draw, floating into the ether above the airy soundscapes. While songs like “Let Yourself Go Another Time” and “The Winter Is Cold” are upbeat and jaunty, most of Genesis is restrained beauty. The album has been championed of late by artists the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Stereolab, and Super Furry Animals, the latter of which sampled the gentle Wendy & Bonnie paean “By the Sea” in the opening of its 2003 song, “Hello Sunshine.” Unfortunately, at the time of its initial release, Genesis did not find as impressive a following. Shortly after the album was released, and amid promotion for the record that included an aborted slot on The Merv Griffin Show, the group's record label, Skye Records, dissolved due to bankruptcy. Subsequently, Wendy and Bonnie Flower faded into seeming obscurity. Then my show came along. This show opens with Cal Tjader, who co-owned Skye Records along with being an in-demand percussionist. he was a family friend that thought the young girls would benefit from not being thrust into the pop scene without a guiding hand on their team. But when the label went belly-up, Bonnie went off to college. I like most of this album. I wonder how many other hidden masterpieces got snuffed out before they got a chance to be heard by a wider audience. I mean these two teenagers, 15 and 18, got pretty far relatively speaking. Even for the time.  Wendy and Bonnie - By the Sea (1969)  Wendy and Bonnie - Five O'Clock In the Morning (1969)  Wendy and Bonnie - Let Yourself Go Another Time (1969)  Yardbirds - Knowing That I'm Losing You (Tangerine) (1968) Yardbirds - White Summer (1968) The Yardbirds - Glimpses (1967) The Yardbirds - Dazed and Confused (1968) Eric Burdon & The Animals - Orange And Red Beam (1968) Freee Fall - Big Mack Truck -?????  That's really how it's spelled. Recorded "live" onboard Norwegian Cruise Liners and, as the name states, intended for the passenger/tourist audiences. I enlarged the back cover because it's amazing. Apparently Norwegian gave these passenger-only records as gifts. I gotta get some more.  Brandon Wade - Letter From a Teenage Son (1967)  Bulldog - Rock & Roll Hootchi Coo (1974) Rick Derringer (the composer) spelled it "Hoochie Koo". Believe it or not, it had been rendered on vinyl three times before his own recording in 1973 became his biggest hit (by far). It was first recorded in 1970 by Johnny Winter and his band, Johnny Winter And, of which Derringer was a member. In 1973, Derringer recorded a solo version, which was his only Top 40 chart hit as a solo artist in the U.S. It became a staple of 1970s radio and rock music compilations. The song was initially recorded by Johnny Winter in 1970 with his band "Johnny Winter And", which included Rick Derringer and other former members of The McCoys, Derringer's previous band ("Hang On Sloopy" was their biggest hit...by far.). In 1970, they recorded the song during the Live Johnny Winter And tour, which was released as Live at the Fillmore East 10/3/70. Winter and Derringer later recorded the song with Winter's brother for Edgar Winter's White Trash live 1972 album Roadwork. Bulldog was an obscure spinoff of The Rascals that formed in 1971. Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli, after leaving their successful act behind, signed with Decca Records. That first album sank without a trace, and their contract with Decca came to an abrupt end and Bulldog spent the majority of 1973 trying to avoid the oldies circuit that had started swallowing up their contemporaries. They signed with Neil Bogart's Buddha Records in 1974 and released Smasher. Perhaps Buddha's primary reputation for bubblegum and novelty records can explain why this release was virtually ignored upon its release. The album sank without even a slight showing on the Billboard charts and Bulldog was dead by early 1975. Cornish and Danelli would resurface a few years later, teaming up with Wally Bryson (Raspberries) in the power-pop act, Fotomaker. Though they issued several albums, they too were dealt a merciless death, leaving Cornish and Danelli on the oldies circuit in a revived lineup of The Rascals. They would later be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along with the rest of their former bandmates that they had worked so hard to extricate themselves from.  Rick Derringer rererererecorded the song in 2012, a new version of the song with lyrics reflecting his Christian beliefs. Titled "Read the Word and Live It Too". He supported Trump. So f him.  Cledus Maggard - Virgil And The $300 Vacation (1976) I've played Cledus Maggard and The Citizen's Band on my show once before, playing the song "The White Knight" on my CB Radio show.  Leslie Podkin - You Won't Need No Money (1961) Ogo - Marijuana [Guam] (?) Roy E. Baker - Ballad Of The Abortion Child (A Love Letter From Heaven)  (1974) Obituary: Roy “Boy” Edward Baker, age 85 of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014. Roy was born May 28, 1929, in the coal mining town of Hazard, KY to Gilbert and Mahalia Baker. It was growing up in Hazard that he picked up the nickname “Roy Boy.” He was never able to shake the nickname and it has followed him throughout his life. He was affectionately known as “Roy Boy” by the many friends that loved him so. As a boy, Roy was a Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer all rolled into one. In the small coal-mining where he lived, people worked hard and went to bed early. At night, Roy Boy would slip out of a bedroom window just to wake the town by ringing the church bell. He was the epitome of mischief. His father was a coal miner and Roy grew up expecting that he would follow in those footsteps. It didn't take him long to decide he needed to pursue something else. “I worked a half-day in a coal mine where donkeys drug the coal out. I decided that was not the life for me,” he said. Roy left the coal mining town where he grew up and continued to have a career with General Motors in the tool and die industry. An accomplished musician playing piano, guitar, banjo, drums, and the bull-fiddle, Roy enjoyed many years as a musician, singer, and songwriter. While working for General Motors, he often played musical shows on weekends. The name “Roy Boy” became his stage name. As a movie actor, he played the part of a coal miner in the movie “October Sky,” which was partly filmed in Knoxville and Oliver Springs. When he was nine years old, Roy began drawing cartoons and selling them to his classmates in Hazard. A true patriot of America, Roy continued to use his talents drawing pictures that exemplified his patriotic love of God and country. On any given day you could find him sharing his art with friends at fast-food restaurants. His trademark was the patriotic clothing that he designed and wore in support of America. His iconic little red and white striped truck proudly displayed the American flag and could be seen in parades and events all over East Tennessee. His support for humanitarian projects was recognized and honored in various circles. He was recognized as the Man of the Year in Abstract Art by the city of Knoxville in 2007.  The British North-American Act - Corduroy Coat (1969)

I knew I was about to be face-to-face with five-time Grammy Nominee, producer, composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist extraordinaire, Johnny Gale, for the first time in three-plus decades, when I was booking rock, and Johnny was playing it, back in the heady daze of the New York club scene. What I didn't know is that we actually met five decades ago. What?!? Earlier today, listening to an interview Johnny did recently, at the tail end, more than an hour and a half in, he mentioned his friend, Vinny Graffeo. I knew Johnny was from Queens. I lived in Queens. My boyfriend in 1970, Vinny Graffeo lived in Queens. Could there be another guitar/bass player at that time, in that place, with that name? I screen-shared some pics. Turns out no. We shared the same Vinny. Upon seeing the pics, Johnny recognized 15 year old me. What a way to kick off a conversation. The fun didn't stop. We talked the early days, the music he was listening to, his ascent to playing, the bands, the gigs, the players, from Vinny and Marty Miller (another crazy story) to Leslie West, Waddy Wachtel, Angel Rissoff, Gene Cornish, Phoebe Snow, Cyndi Lauper (he was her boyfriend), Ronnie Spector, Darlene Love, Elvis Costello, Ringo Starr, Little Steven, Aaron Carter (huh?), his own Gale Force (awarded Best Guitar Record of The Year by Guitar Shop Magazine, upon its release in '94), to music directing and playing on Boardwalk Empire, Vinyl, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Irishman, to A Bronx Tale on Broadway. We came full-circle back to Doo-Wop, the music which transfixed him as a kid, and has been one of his major gigs for the past 20 years, with Kenny Vance and The Planotones. What an amazing and varied career Johnny's fashioned, without once having a job/job or formally studying. He schooled and mastered his craft in the school of hard knocks, having plenty, alongside his many victories. As easy to talk to as an old friend… he kinda is one. From Bayside to Bleecker Street, we've shared air, friends, music, and memories. Mourning the loss of the stupendous Mike Finnigan this day, and learning of the premature passing of childhood beau, Vinny, it was warm, fun, and comforting to be in Johnny's great company. What a trip! Please give his stupendous Daddy Long Legs a listen. https://bit.ly/3lWD4TS Johnny Gale Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Wed, 8/11/21, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET Streamed Live on my Facebook Replay here: https://bit.ly/3iFPnSM All BROADcasts, as podcasts, also available on iTunes apple.co/2dj8ld3 Stitcher bit.ly/2h3R1fla tunein bit.ly/2gGeItj Also on iHeartRadio, SoundCloud, Voox, OwlTail, Backtracks, PlayerFM, Himalaya, Podchaser, and Listen Notes Thanks to Rick Smolke of Quik Impressions, the best printers, printing, the best people people-ing. quikimpressions.com Nicole Venables,of Ruby Begonia Hair Studio Beauty and Products, for tresses like the stars she coifs, and regular people, like me. The message has always been to stand for peace, love, and happiness. For legendary singer songwriter, Felix Cavaliere, making people feel good is primary to his illustrious 50-ayear career that includes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Grammy Hall of Fame. Few artists can claim they defined a generation; Felix continues to remind us to keep listening for the world’s beauty. Early in 1965, Felix Cavaliere formed the ‘Young Rascals’ with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish. That October, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island’s elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the mega hit “Good Lovin’” struck No. 1 in February 1966. They followed suit with a string of hits like “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin" (No. 1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” (No. 1 in 1968). The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales. By the early 70s, The Rascals experimented with more jazz-influenced sounds, and moved to Columbia Records. The Rascals disbanded in 1972. Felix's solo career thrived during this decade. He released his self-titled debut album with Todd Rundgren at the producer helm. His follow-up albums were Destiny (1974), Castles in the Air (1979) (Castle in the Air produced another Top 40 hit – “Only a Heart Sees” reached No. 2), Dreams in Motion (1994) and in 2008 he collaborated with Stax guitar legend, Steve Cropper, on the Grammy-nominated Nudge it Up a Notch and again in 2010 with Midnight Flyer. Felix calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He’s also finishing his memoir and has an active tour schedule with FELIX CAVALIERE’S RASCALS. The legendary Felix Cavaliere's Rascals are celebrating 50 years of music. Visit FELIXCAVALIEREMUSIC.COM.

Gene Cornish remembered that first rehearsal as a life changing event. He said, “They immediately jelled and were a tight little band right from the start.” After getting a show list of cover songs, The Rascals were off playing local Jersey and New York Clubs and getting noticed. From the time the band first sat down as a simple basement band to their first single, was less than a year.

Born in 1944, in Ottawa, Canada, Cornish came into the world with music in his blood. His mother, Ada, was a singer for Big Bands, including those led by Woody Herman and Ozzie Nelson. By 1959, he was 15 and had earned a reputation as a talented guitarist. By then, he was fronting his own band, Gene Cornish & The Satelites, with boyhood friend, Pat Proietti. While attending Ben Franklin High School, he started a vocal group called The Nobles, and eventually put out a few records under his own name. In 1964, he moved to New York City and was doing double duty in Joey Dee & The Starliters, and his own group, The Unbeatables. The Unbeatables had a novelty hit with a Cornish song called “I Wanna Be A Beatle.” but lasted only a year. It was in the Starliters that Cornish met singer and keyboard player Felix Cavaliere, and singer Eddie Brigati. All three left to form The Young Rascals with drummer Dino Danelli. After a short few months playing the NY club scene, the explosive R&B flavored rock band was signed by Atlantic Records. They soon became known as one of the best live bands in America. Before 1965 was over, the group would start releasing a string of hit songs that would continue for six years. Brigati left in 1970, and Cornish followed in 1971. The remaining Rascals went in a jazz rock direction, but Cornish stayed true to his love of rock and roll. He re-emerged in 1973, with Dino Danelli in a band called Bulldog, and the pair remained together through a second rock band, called Fotomaker. The Rascals reunited for one tour in 1988. In 1997, were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Gene Cornish reunited with the other 3 Rascals in 2010 for a star-studded benefit show. In 2013, Cornish a full-blown Rascals reunion finally happened. Gene participated (with the original Rascals line up) in the acclaimed stage production: The Rascals- Once Upon A Dream, which toured North America after a sold out run on Broadway.
