The Young Rascals were one of the early groups which would define the genre of "blue eyed soul." For a period of two to three years, this group would generate hit after hit. Their third album, Groovin', would close out the era in which they were known as “The Young Rascals,” because follow-up albums would see them using simply the name "The Rascals." Felix Cavaliere was a classically trained pianist, and joined a band called the Starliters, where he met David Brigati and his younger brother Eddie. Cavaliere convinced Eddie Brigati and guitarist Gene Cornish to leave the Starliters and form a band, recruiting jazz drummer Dino Danilli to flesh out the band. They called themselves "Them" until they found out that a group out of the UK was already using that name (Van Morrison's band). They settled on "The Young Rascals" when comedian Soupy Sales used them as his back-up band when he toured the college circuit in 1965.Much of this album is a collection of singles rather than a cohesive piece of music. Eight of the eleven songs are either A-side or B-side single releases. The Rascals moved into a more psychedelic direction after this album, and they would be largely done by the early 70's. They were early inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, receiving that honor in 1997.Bruce presents this soulful album for this week's podcast.Groovin'This signature song from the group almost didn't make it as a single. Atlantic Records pushed back on this track because it was very different from the sound of their other songs, having a more Latin influence. The inspiration for the lyrics was Cavaliere's girlfriend Adrienne Buccheri. He only got to see her on Sundays because he was so occupied with the group, music, and touring on other days. You Better RunMany listeners who grew up in the 80's will be more familiar with Pat Benatar's cover of this song than the Young Rascals' original. It was released a year before the album as a single, in May 1966. The song has more of a garage band feel than other songs on the album.A Girl Like YouThis is the lead-off song for the album, and went to number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Upbeat, feel good, this is the opening song of new love. It starts off subdued with piano and vocals, then builds into the horns and percussion. If You KnewThis song was released as the B-side to the single "I've Been Lonely Too Long" from their previous album called Collections. It is the only song on the album to be listed as written by all member of the band. Most songs were written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel (from the motion picture “The Graduate”) Dustin Hoffman's got his breakthrough role in this coming of age film. STAFF PICKS:Green Tambourine by the Lemon PipersRob leads off the staff picks with the best known song from a short-lived Ohio band. Unfortunately the success of this song would cause the record company to pigeonhole the group into doing more songs in the psychedelic genre. The group was unenthusiastic about this direction, and would leave the label in 1969, dissolving shortly thereafter.Sunshine of Your Love by CreamLynch brings us a signature song from the original supergroup. The song arose out of a bass riff that Jack Bruce created after seeing Jimi Hendrix for the first time. Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton take turns with vocals while Ginger Baker utilizes a tribal beat on percussion.I Can See for Miles by The WhoWayne features the only single from the Who album “The Who Sell Out.“ Although it went to number 9 on the US charts, guitarist and writer Pete Townshend expected it to do much better. The Who made use of the studio as an instrument on this heavier, psychedelic song, using techniques similar to the Beach Boys and the Beatles at the time.I Second That Emotion by Smokey Robinson & the MiraclesBruce closes out the staff picks with a song that originated from a trip Smokey Robinson and Al Cleveland took to a Detroit department store in search of a gift for Robinson's wife Claudette. When Robinson told the salesman of a set of pearls, "I sure hope she likes them," Cleveland accidentally said "I second that emotion," rather than "I second that motion." The two laughed about it and wrote this song which would go to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Hip Hug-Her by Booker T. & the M.G.'sWe close out with a funky instrumental which was on the charts at the time. We are in week 2 of the sermon series I AM, tune in as Pastor Marlon preaches from the subject I CAN SEE, I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.....press play and be blessed
The words echoed in our hearts as we embarked on a wild adventure. Picture this: wide-open roads stretching across three states—Texas, Utah, and Oregon—each adorned with speed limit signs proudly displaying the magic number: 80. A thrill surged through our veins; we knew that hitting 90 was inevitable. Buckle up, dear listeners, for this show is about to become a rock anthem at RadioWilderLive.com! ‘I Can See for Miles' with the Who, 'Time Running' by Tegan and Sarah, and Duke of Earl 'Expressway to Your Heart,' all lined up perfectly. Michael Franti's reggae-infused beats infused the air with 'A Little Bit of Riddim' and Betty Davis' sultry voice whispered secrets with 'They Say I'm Different'. Ugly Kid Joe and Harry Chapin joined forces as Father and son with 'Cat's in the Cradle' in The Dueces. Their poignant tale echoed through the wind and we wondered about life's turns, missed moments, and the road ahead. What is the difference between 65 miles an hour and 80? Not a mere 15—it feels more like 30! It's the thrill of breaking barriers, of becoming one with velocity. To our friends, Tenant Property Protection, in Napa, sipping wine amidst vineyards: may your glasses overflow with memories on your 15th anniversary. As Memorial Day approaches, turn your dial to RadioWilder. Feel the wind whip through your hair, taste the freedom of 80, and let the music carry you. As always, the request hotline: is toll-free at 602-935-4989. And as our ship sails toward summer shores, watch for the Capt'n Dave and The Internet Radio Man t-shirts—they're coming soon! And as the final notes fade into the sunset, we extend a heartfelt thank you to our cherished listeners. Your ears and hearts give our music a home. Until next time, keep the volume up and the spirit wild. Thank you for tuning into RadioWilderLive.com—where the journey is just as thrilling as the destination.

“I Was Once Blind, Now, I Can See. The man was born blind, not because he or his ancestors sinned but just so God's power could be revealed. There is a possibility that what you are going through is just a prop, a tool in the masters hand. God may be bragging on you. Remember you are His masterpiece, the master craftsman may just be putting you on display. It took this long because, the wonder was timed. you are designed to be showcased when your miracle would cause the people to ‘come and see'. When there would be no choice but to bow to your God. When the whole town/nation, your family could talk about it. Rejoice my friend, this is your time! The miracle is here. You too can now say; ‘I was once blind but now I can see'. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents' sins?” “It was not because of his sins or his parents' sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. … “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!” “Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus. Series: John Speaker: Jonathan Olsen Sermon Text: John 9:1–17 [1] As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. [2] And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” [3] Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. [4] We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. [5] As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” [6] Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud [7] and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. [8] The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” [9] Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” [10] So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” [11] He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” [12] They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” [13] They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. [14] Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. [15] So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” [16] Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. [17] So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” The post I Can See! first appeared on Grace & Peace Community Church.

Kathleen Smith is a breath of fresh air. Truly an artist that has taken control of her own creative destiny, Kathleen tells the story of building a recording studio in an old barn in the mountains of New Mexico. It’s there she taught herself how to engineer and produce and the result is a new, deeply personal album called Medicine, Vol. I. that will be released this spring. Kathleen lets us in on how the confluence of art, books, nature and being with friends come together to inspire her songs. During the show, Kathleen performs three songs from her upcoming album live from the Joy Sounds studio: “Carpe Diem,” “I Forgive You (But I’m Still ‘Effin Mad),” and her brand new single, “I Can See for Miles.” The next few months are going to be very exciting for Kathleen and you will want to keep up with her by following @kathleenmusic

Young guitarists emulate standard-bearers like The Kinks’ Dave Davies, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton. But when those guitarists were making their mark in the 1960s, they worshipped their own guitar hero: Link Wray. Sixty years ago, in 1958, Wray released “Rumble,” an instrumental song that had the 12-bar form of blues but pioneered the distortion effect that would become a defining element in rock. It’s what you hear in the very first notes of songs like The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” and The Who’s “I Can See for Miles. “ On this podcast extra, Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and James Hutchinson, who plays bass guitar with Bonnie Raitt, weigh in on Wray’s technique and influence. “It’s got to be one of the most basic and yet fundamentally moving songs that have ever been recorded for the purposes of rock music,” says Brian Wright-McLeod, author of The Encyclopedia of Native Music. Guitar player Stevie Salas says Wray was proud of his Native American heritage, and the song’s success turned Wray into an inspiration for other Native American musicians. In fact, the song is in a title of a documentary about Native Americans in rock that Salas produced and appears in: Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World. Learn more about your ad choices. On Women on the Line we look into the language of distance. How do we navigate both visible and invisible borders? Where is home and who gets to feel at home? We chat with artist and curator Talia Smith about her upcoming exhibition,I Can See for Miles, held at the Centre for Contemporary Photography. Later in the show, we hear from artist Lana Nguyen who walks across invisible borders everyday. She chats with us about her essay Mapping the Supply’s Chain featured on Chart Collective. Music from this week's show is Lipstick Stains and Baybee by Jay Som. BiosTalia Smith is an artist and curator from New Zealand and now based in Sydney Australia. She is of Samoan, Cook Island and New Zealand European heritage. Her curatorial practice engages with photographic and time based mediums in order to examine notions of time, memory and ruin.Lana Nguyen is an artist whose practice currently centres on exploring the idea of home in Australia. Coming from a half-Vietnamese refugee, half colonial-Australian background – she is interested in looking at the contestations in the history of this land, its borders and its margins. She is interested in interdisciplinary approaches between art and activism; the ways we can create, reflect and deepen community through the arts. Recent projects she’s worked on include La Nonna, a theatre piece exploring the intersection of queer and immigrant identity as part of the 2018 Midsumma Festival and Planning Atlantis, an independent site-specific performance exploring the dream of the Docklands.

The Bargrooves year would not be complete without our annual trip to the slopes. This new volume, Bargrooves Apres Ski 3.0, is the perfect place to kick off the New Year with a stylish mix of upfront house sounds as heard on the more discerning dancefloors and in the finer après ski lounges around Bargrooves’ favourite mountaintop destinations. Containing two bonus mixes from Bargrooves A&R, master compiler and veteran of vertiginous clubland, Andy Daniell, this edition is an album of distinct halves. The first mix suits a pacier descent or a full throttle venture onto the dancefloor whilst the second side provides the soundtrack to a mellower ride or a more soulful backdrop to loungier post piste activities. Big driving basslines for big air dominate the first mix. Route 94 enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2013 and here we include two of his productions; first up is his remix of MK’s 1992 classic Always, a huge floorfiller so far this Winter, which is followed by a compilation exclusive, Walls Come Tumbling Down. The unmistakable influence of one Ben Westbeech reaches across the album with his latest Breach hit, Everything You Never Had whilst his vocal features on the Jazzanova track I Can See. Right now, however, there is perhaps no bigger bassline than the debut from GotSome featuring the Get Along Gang: ‘Bassline’ has been building up a real head of steam across the club charts and is due its full commercial release this Spring. A thread of quality soulful voices runs throughout the deeper sounds of the second mix. From the word go, Camo & Krooked’s Loving You Is Easy joins hooky strings and big piano chords to a classic soul vocal, whilst Holding On from James Fox features the intimate voice of Vanity Jay. With a career track record that demonstrates his various different talents, Donae’O’s knowledge and experience of both house and R’n’B make him the ideal cohort to produce fellow R’n’B singer/songwriter Terri Walker on her track He Loves Me. Further highlights includes a pair of DFTD label tracks: J.Cub delivers a thunderous deep houser set off by the perfectly paced vocal of Sarah Story, whilst Berlin producer Aaaron’s well-rounded roller, Feelin’ This, picks matters up a little with its heavy snares before slowly introducing a distorted looping vocal that never fails to get people moving.
