Break out your glass, steel, or beer bottle: This time on Shred With Shifty, we're sliding into glory with southern-rock great Derek Trucks, leader of the Derek Trucks Band, co-leader (along with wife Susan Tedeschi) of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and, from 1999 to 2014, member of the Allman Brothers Band. Reared in Jacksonville, Florida, Trucks was born into rock 'n' roll: His uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, and from the time he was nine years old, Derek was playing and touring with blues and rock royalty, from Buddy Guy to Bob Dylan. Early on, he established himself as a prodigy on slide guitar, and in this interview from backstage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Trucks explains why he's always stuck with his trusty Gibson SGs, and how he sets them up for both slide and regular playing. (He also details his custom string gauges.) Trucks analyzes and demonstrates his subtle but scorching solo on “Midnight in Harlem,” off of Tedeschi Trucks Band's acclaimed 2011 record, Revelator. In it, he highlights the influence of Indian classical music, and particularly sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, on his own playing. The lead is “melodic but with Indian-classical inflections,” flourishes that Trucks says are integral to his playing: It's a jazz and jam-band mentality of “dangling your feet over the edge of the cliff,” says Trucks, and going outside whatever mode you're playing in. Throughout the episode, Trucks details his live and studio set ups (“As direct as I can get it”), shares advice for learning slide and why he never uses a pick, and ponders what the future holds for collaborations with Warren Haynes.   Full Video Episodes: http://volume.com/shifty   Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1690423642 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4B8BSR0l78qwUKJ5gOGIWb iHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shred-with-shifty-116270551/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shred-with-shifty/PC:1001071314   Follow Chris Shiflett: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisshiflettmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shifty71 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chris.shiflett Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisshiflett71 Website: http://www.chrisshiflettmusic.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tv5SsSRqR7uLtpKZgcRrg?si=26kWS1v2RYaE4sS7KnHpag   Producer: Jason Shadrick Executive Producers: Brady Sadler and Jake Brennan for Double Elvis Engineering support by Matt Tahaney and Matt Beaudion Video Editor: Addison Sauvan Graphic Design: Megan Pralle   Special thanks to Chris Peterson, Greg Nacron, and the entire Volume.com crew.

The Allman Brothers Band, established in 1969 in Georgia, stands as a cornerstone of Southern rock and American music history. Founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, the band was instrumental in blending rock, blues, jazz, and country music into a genre-defining sound. Their innovative use of dual lead guitars and extended improvisational jams set them apart, creating a live experience that was both powerful and deeply emotional. Tragically, Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 was a devastating blow, but the band soldiered on, with guitarist Dickey Betts stepping up as a leading creative force. The subsequent album, Eat a Peach (1972), featured both live and studio tracks. Throughout the 70s, the Allman Brothers Band produced a series of critically acclaimed albums, intertwining guitar lines earned them a massive following. However, the late 70s brought internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and the death of bassist Berry Oakley, leading to several breakups and reunions. The band experienced a resurgence in the late 80s and 90s and officially disbanded in 2014. During this time Gregg Allman shared a complex and evolving relationship with his son, Devon. Born in 1972 Devon grew up largely separated from his famous father due to Gregg's demanding career and his battle with substance abuse. Despite this distance, Devon was profoundly influenced by his father's music and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. As Devon grew, he pursued his own path in music, forming the band Honeytribe and later joining the Royal Southern Brotherhood. Despite their time apart, music became a bridge between father and son. Gregg and Devon reconnected and shared the stage at various times. Following Gregg's death in 2017, Devon continued to carry the torch of Southern rock through The Allman Betts Band, a group he formed with Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. The Allman Betts Band re-captures the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the chemistry between Devon and Duane is palpable. Their collaboration is not just a continuation of their family legacies but a creative partnership that has revitalised the Southern rock genre for the modern era. "From Morning Dew to Dark Star: The Grateful Dead's Masterpiece Concert in 1973"Larry Mishkin's featured concert is the Grateful Dead's legendary performance at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium on June 10, 1973. This show is celebrated as one of the band's greatest, partly because of its remarkable opening with "Morning Dew," a song that symbolized the special nature of the event. The concert, part of a two-day festival with the Allman Brothers Band, included an extraordinary setlist and performances that have become iconic. The show started with "Morning Dew," a rare and significant opener, setting the tone for the night. The first set included 13 songs, ending with an 18-minute "Playing in the Band." The second set opened with a 22-minute "Eyes of the World," followed by Jerry Garcia singing "Morning Dew," "Stella Blue," and "Warfrat," which was a rare combination for a single show. The set also featured a 12-minute "Bird Song" and an 11-minute "Here Comes Sunshine," showcasing the band's range and intensity.A highlight of the concert was a 26-minute "Dark Star" that led into a sequence of "He's Gone," "Warfrat," "Truckin'," and "Sugar Magnolia," making for an over-hour-long jam to close the second set. The encore was equally impressive, featuring eight songs with guest performances by Dicky Betts and Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers Band. This show exemplified the Grateful Dead's ability to create a transcendent musical experience.Larry also discusses the song "Wave That Flag," played for the last time at this concert, which evolved into "US Blues." This track, notable for its evolving lyrics and style, was a precursor to a fan-favorite encore tune.In music news, Larry highlights the release of Widespread Panic's new LP, "Snake Oil King," their first in nine years, set to be released on June 14, 2024. The band, known for their jam band status, recorded the album at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and it features six tracks with high-quality vinyl mastering. The discussion also touches on Dead and Company's recent performances at the Sphere in Las Vegas, noting the innovative visuals and varied setlists. The band continues to break out new tunes and maintain the excitement of live shows. Finally, a humorous note mentions a Phish fan who was banned from all MSG venues for posting a video of himself taking a bong hit inside the Sphere during a concert, highlighting the strict enforcement of venue policies. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

In the case of “Passenger,” the added quirk is thrown in of someone other than the composer singing the song. So we have a song written by Peter Monk, with music by Phil Lesh, and sung by Bob Weir and Donna Jean Godcheaux on Terrapin Station.Lesh wrote the song, admittedly based on Fleetwood Mac's riff for their song “Station Man.” Lesh said, in an interview in Dupree's Diamond News, “What's weird about that song is I sort of did it as a joke. It's a take on a Fleetwood Mac tune called ‘Station Man.' I just sort of sped it up and put some different chord changes in there..."Monk's lyrics for the song have been the source of quite a bit of debate. There are quite a few alternate hearings, especially around the line: “Terrible, the only game in town,” which many, including myself, hear as “Parable, the only game in town.”“Passenger” was first performed on May 15, 1977, at the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis (released on the May 1977 box set). It was performed regularly through1981, with its final performance on December 27, 1981, at the Oakland Auditorium.Terrapin Station, which included the studio version of the song, was released on July 27, 1977. “Passenger” was released as a single, with “Terrapin Station” on the B side.Great tune.  I'm sorry I never got to hear it live.Bootleg album:  Live at Moe's Place – open with it, used to listen to it at good friends' Dinie and Janet's place in Ann Arbor.  Really jams.                 Played 99 times                First:  May 15, 1977 at St. Louis Arena, St. Louis, MO, USA            Last:  December 27, 1981 at Oakland Civic Auditorium, Oakland, CA  MJ News SHOW No. 4:                    Shakedown Street                                                Track #24                                                5:00 – 6:41                 Brent with music fills and vocals  ENCORE:                          Blue Sky                                                Eat A Peach                                                Blue Sky (youtube.com)                                                3:00 – end College acquaintance and fellow Deadhead used to say that whenever she listened to this album, she would play Blue Sky twice and THEN play the album all the way through picking up a third Blue Sky.  I tried it and discovered she was right on about that. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

Author Andrew Wild returns to the podcast to talk about his brand new book “The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song”! The story of the Allman Brothers band is one of triumph followed by tragedy followed by a remarkable comeback in the wake of that tragedy. As it's stated in the book's overview: "The music of the Allman Brothers is the pure distillation of the four main ingredients of American music: blues, rock, jazz and country. At their best, they transcended genre: they just were." In this episode, Andrew talks with me about the legendary Duane Allman, his little brother Gregg Allman, who, along with his bandmates Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe carried on in the wake of Duane's passing and shortly after bassist Berry Oakley's death. It wasn't easy. They went through a rough period in the late 70s into the 80s before marking their comeback in the late 80s, a comeback that sustained right up until the death of Gregg and Butch. We'll cover the legendary albums including ‘At Fillmore East' and ‘Eat A Peach' and the later members of the band Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, who helped rejuvenate Gregg and his bandmates in the late 90s into the 2000s.Purchase a copy of "The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song" in the UK through Burning Shed HERE and in the US through Amazon HEREListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode HERE Visit The Big House Museum's website HERE Visit the Booked On Rock Website HEREWatch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK TWITTER INSTAGRAM TIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! Play All Night!: Duane Allman and the Journey to Fillmore East is Bob Beatty's most recent book. Bob, however, has been an Allman Brothers fan for a long time. Like the Allmans, Bob has Florida roots. He now lives and works in Tennessee, where he got his Ph.D. and is a history and museum consultant. Bob's fast-reading book looks at the breakout album for the Allmans. Released in 1971, Live at Fillmore East is one of the best live albums ever, and it brought the band to a mass audience. It features the classic Allmans lineup, with Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar, Gregg Allman on vocals and organ, Berry Oakley on bass, and Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson on drums. Unfortunately, though Duane started the Allman Brothers Band, his time with the group was relatively brief. He died in a motorcycle accident only a few months after At Fillmore East came out. Duane was just 24, and there seemed no limit to what he could do as a guitarist. As Bob makes clear, with Duane at the helm, the Allmans were closer to blues and acid rock than the more laid back band they became later. The radio friendly mid-70s sound of the ABB was the result of Dickey Betts writing more country-flavored tunes. Nothing wrong with that. But the Duane period has a tougher quality.  Bob and Colin talk about how the Allmans formed, why the Fillmore album took off with listeners, and how the band continued to evolve amid lineup changes and inner-tensions.

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Today we have Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks of the Tedeschi Trucks Band on the show. Derek Trucks made his name as a slide guitar prodigy with a Hall of Fame pedigree. He's the nephew of Butch Trucks, drummer of the Allman Brothers Band, who Derek toured with extensively throughout the 2000s before forming the Derek Trucks Band. Somewhere along the road, Derek met another great guitarist with a Berklee-pedigree, Susan Tedeschi, who is one of the best singers working today. Eventually the two married and merged their bands in 2010. Their latest album, I Am The Moon, is a collection of 24 songs across four different albums. On today's episode, Justin Richmond speaks with Susan and Derek about the beginnings of their band, and how their new album came to be. Marc recalled joining the Allman Brothers Band in 1991 at the invitation of the late-great Butch Trucks, where he was percussionist for 23 years alongside Butch and Jaimoe, until the band stopped in 2014. He then joined Greg Allman's band until Greg's passing, and joined the Doobie Brothers in 2018. Throughout the show, John, Ed and Marc talked about their long history together, with lots of great Doobie Brothers and Allman Brothers stories.

Follow him on Twitter at @AndrewFinkMI. Andrew's Music Pick: The Allman Brothers Band Have the risers for the twin drum set-up been properly double-bolted? Have all the lines into the amps and board been checked? Is the organ plugged in? Then there's no need for a soundcheck as we move through the dog days of August with a trip to Hot ‘Lanta! Today we celebrate the greatness of The Allman Brothers Band, a little group originally out of Jacksonville, FL (and later Macon, GA) put together piece by piece during the late Sixties by brothers Duane (the elder) and Gregg (the younger). The Allmans are regularly described as one of the greatest “Southern Rock” or “jam” bands to have ever existed. The irony, of course, is that they disdained both labels: on the one hand, “Southern Rock” didn't even exist as a genre until these guys invented it, and was a reductivist label that put them in a box they didn't properly belong to. And on the other hand, in the words of Gregg Allman, “we aren't a jam band, we're just a band that jams.” What the Allmans were really about was incredibly hard, sweaty electrified blues-rock, electrified in a way nobody had ever heard prior to their emergence onto the scene in late 1969. With a twin-guitar attack (Duane and co-lead guitarist Dickey Betts), a double drum engine-room churning away behind them (Butch Trucks — perhaps the most quintessential “southern rock” name ever — and Jai Johanny Johanson), eloquently melodic bass counterpoint (Berry Oakley), and Gregg Allman on organ and lead vocals, what the Allmans came up with was a fusion of blues, rock, and jazz that took three old and hallowed genres and somehow managed to create something new out of them. Join us this week as we travel through the prehistory of the Allmans (all those early bands, Duane's amazing career as a session guitarist, etc.), their glory years (including one of the greatest live albums in the history of popular music), and their extremely “tabloid drama” decline (yes, Cher is somehow involved). For the first five years of their career these guys never set a foot wrong despite having to survive not one, but two tragic motorcycle deaths, and if you aren't already familiar with the music then don't keep yourself wonderin', just dive in and eat a peach for peace.

The Allman Brothers Band recorded their third album live in March 1971 over two days.  At Fillmore East would become their breakthrough album,  filled with enough blues-rock jams  to make it a double, despite the fact that there were only seven songs in total.  Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman realized that their strength was rooted in their live shows, and determined that the best showcase for them would be a live album. The band features Gregg Allman on vocals, piano, and organ, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on guitars, Berry Oakley on bass guitar, and Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson on percussion.  The band was unusual in having both two lead guitar players and two percussion players. At Fillmore East went gold about 3 months after its release.  Unfortunately, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in Macon at the height of the album's popularity in October 1971.   Only 13 months later bassist Barry Oakley also died in a motorcycle accident only 3 blocks away from the place where Duane had died.  Friend of the show Andy Burt features this classic album. Statesboro BluesThis track opens the album, and was written in 1928 by Blind Willie McTell.  The blues group Taj Mahal recorded a version of the song in 1968, and this inspired Duane Allman to perform the song and to play it on the slide guitar.  The slide Allman used was a glass vial originally containing cold medicine!Hot'lantaThis instrumental song is a deeper cut that gets its name from a nickname for Atlanta.  Gregg and Duane Allman got their start in Hourglass (which we previously featured), but were not well suited to work in a pop group.  Hot'lanta was never recorded in a studio, but was only recorded live.In Memory of Elizabeth ReedAnother instrumental, this song was a jam based off a track from their second studio album.  You get a sense of their jazz influences here, both from Miles Davis and John Coletrane.  The song was written for a girl with whom Dickie Betts had an affair.  Not wanting to name her, Betts took the name from a tombstone in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia.Whipping PostPerhaps the most famous track on the album, Whipping Post takes up an entire album side.  Jerry Oakley wrote the riff, and Gregg Allman wrote the lyrics.  The idea is of a man betrayed  by a woman who feels completely helpless.  The complex meter is unusual for a blues rock band, and shows the versatility and fusion characteristics of the band.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the motion picture “Shaft” by Isaac HayesWho is the man that would risk his neck for his brother, man?  (Shaft)  Can ya dig it? STAFF PICKS:“Hot Pants” by James BrownBrian keeps the music Georgia-based with his staff pick from the Godfather of Soul.  The official name of this song is "Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants)," and this is part 1 of a 3-part funk song.  Parts 2 and 3 appeared on the B-side of the single for part 1.  “Love the One You're With” by The Isley BrothersRob brings us a soulful cover of the Stephen Stills song you've likely heard before.  The Isley Brothers would take this version to number 3 on the R&B charts, and it was their 5th top 40 single. The Isley Brothers got their start in the 50's, and brought a fusion approach to gospel harmonies.“Smiling Faces Sometimes” by The Undisputed TruthWayne's staff pick continues the soulful tact with this psychedelic soul production.  The Undisputed Truth was known for their unusual costumes and makeup, predating the glam-rock trend.  Beware of the handshake that hides the snake.  Can you dig it?“Riders on the Storm” by The DoorsAndy finishes off the staff picks with this song inspired by “Ghost Riders in the Sky.”  The dark lyrics were inspired by serial killer Billy Cook, who killed six people while hitchhiking in California.  This single was released just before Jim Morrison died in Paris. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“K-Jee” by The Nite-LitersThis instrumental hit was on the charts at the time, and would make a re-appearance on the disco motion picture “Saturday Night Fever.”

Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman loved country music, blues, and jazz. Together with their friends Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe Johanson, they formed The Allman Brothers Band in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969. Now, let’s take a Deep Dive into the short-lived group. Duane and Gregg had their fair share of trials and tribulations as kids that provided them plenty of fodder to write songs. Including the death of their Army Sergeant father, who was murdered by a hitchhiker he picked up in 1949. At the time, Duane was 3 and Gregg was 2. The band was able to form in the late 60s without losing their membership to the draft for the Vietnam war because Gregg shot himself in the foot, and Duane was the eldest son taking the role of head of the family after his father’s death Before the band settled on their fairly simple and obvious name choice, they had a few other choices, including “The Escorts,” “The 31st of February,” “Hour Glass,” “Almanac,” and “The Allman Joys.” Back in the day, there weren’t many left-handed guitars being made. The brothers were both left-handed, but ended up teaching themselves to play regular right-handed guitars Early-on, the band used to take hallucinogenic mushroom extract pills and start jamming early in the morning. Shrooms influenced them so much that they decided to make it part of the band’s logo While the band began with two studio albums, it was their live album At Filmore East from 1971 that cemented their hold in history as one of the most prolific jam bands, encouraging their fans to enjoy the music by taping the show if they wanted to The band would have been at Woodstock as spectators, but didn’t feel like fighting the traffic. They instead decided to get together for the Second Woodstock in the 90s Gregg Allman married Cher in 1975. They had an on-and-off relationship until 1979. They released an album together in 1977 called Two The Hard Way. It was credited to "Allman and Woman." If you’re a fan of the Derek and the Dominos song Layla, that’s Duane Allman’s guitar you’re listening to They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995 by Willie Nelson. Gregg Allman went into rehab the next day In 1971, Duane died in a motorcycle crash, with the band dedicating their 1972 effort, Eat a Peach, in his honor. Unfortunately, just over a year later, bassist Berry Oakley also suffered the same fate in November of 1972. Gregg Allman would keep the band together until his death of liver cancer in 2017

At age 9, Marc Quiñones was introduced by a family friend to salsa legend Tito Puente. Along with long-time collaborator Bobby Allende, Marc was seen as somewhat of a child prodigy in New York salsa circles. Quiñones comes from an impressive lineage of musicians, including father Tony, late uncle Rafael, and younger brother Camilo. The musical roots run deep. Quiñones and Allende would go on to play several high-profile dates with Puente, including Carnegie Hall before they were even old enough to drive. You might ask, where does one go from there, when you have had the proverbial "mic drop" opportunity of a lifetime to play with a music icon. While playing with contemporary jazz group Spyro Gyra, Quiñones would have a chance meeting that would change his career trajectory for decades to come. It turns out that Butch Trucks, the legendary drummer of the Allman Brothers Band was a big Spyro Gyra fan. While attending a Spyro Gyra show, Trucks was intrigued by Quiñones' playing and went backstage to meet him. The two immediately hit it off. Later that year, Marc was invited to record on a new Allman Brothers record. He would go on to tour and record with the band until 2014 and would also support Gregg Allman's solo work until his death in 2017. Currently, Marc Quiñones plays with his own salsa group 8 y Mas with his production partner Bobby Allende. Later this year, you can catch him touring with Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame group The Doobie Brothers and see him featured in work with arranger, producer Tony Succar.

My guest today is Pat Bergeson. Pat is an amazing guitarist, a natural who is at ease with virtually any style. His credits include Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne, Suzy Bogguss, Butch Trucks and many, many more. As Pat will tell you though, the one that is probably the game changer for him is the phone call he got from Chet Atkins that changed his life and career.   Not only a great guitarist, Pat is also a ridiculously great harmonica player. He plays chromatic harp on a diatonic harp, not an easy feat…this enables him to convert his  knowledge of jazz harmony and killer guitar chops onto another instrument. You'll hear this for yourself. Pat has his own solo records out to- check em out- the most recent one being “Hippy Dance”- you are listening to the title track right now. He also has plays duets with his wife, jazz singer Annie Sellick and they occasionally tour with Tommy Emmanuel. Catch em if you can you'll love it.  I'm so glad Pat was in town and available the day I called him up to do this. He's a great guy and fun hang and goes without saying an incredible guitar player. Throughout the interiew there are a few tunes we play together and you can hear Pat panned slightly right and myself on the left.  Hope you enjoy! This week's guest is Alan Paul. Alan is a former Guitar World and Wall Street Journal writer from the US who somehow became a notable Beijing-based blues musician. Alan wrote a memoir called Big in China about his crazy musical experiences here, and tells the story of how it all began - thanks to a broken guitar, a Chinese repairman who was also a secret musical wizard, and their shared love of Stevie Ray Vaughn. And in a strangely related note, Alan also has a huge connection to legendary Southern rock group the Allman Brothers Band. From writing about and interviewing them over a 25 year period, Alan became an insider in their world, and he talks a lot about his best-selling Allmans book One Way Out. The story of how it came to be, in part, because of Allmans drummer Butch Trucks’ discovery of and respect for Alan’s China book is pretty awesome. Great talk. I remember watching the tribute to Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks and Col. Bruce Hampton put on at the Peach Festival last summer, thinking that this one event didn’t do those three gentlemen especially Gregg and all he had done for us enough justice. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the jam was magnificent, but I wanted more. We all did. So it was so great to hear that Gregg’s son, Devon was organizing his own sort of tribute, as part of his new project with Duane Betts (yes, Duane, son of Dickie). I was psyched to get on the phone with Devon as soon as I heard the news, and luckily was able to track him down on Instagram. Since he is so prolific on social media our conversation started I asked how important the medium was for him. Devon is no doubt doing his dad proud and we are excited to hear all about the December 8th gig, and how the entire Devon Allman Project comes together, and indeed the world tour.  To learn more about the Devon Allman project, and the upcoming tour dates, incluidng the December 8th show in San Francisco, visit devonallmanproject.com and be sure to catch them on the road wherever you are.  You can listen to this episode below, or by connecting and subscribing to one of the podcast platforms here or search your favorite podcast platform for “The Sound Podcast”; Itunes: http://bit.ly/sndpodi TuneIn: http://bit.ly/sndti Stitcher: http://bit.ly/sndsti GooglePlay: http://bit.ly/sndplay Check out The Sound Podcast on Youtube, and subscribe today.  Get The Sound Podcast for iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/the-sound-podcast/id1255563328?mt=8 Get The Sound Podcast for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nobexinc.wls_2975722995.rc&hl=en See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

AUGUST 28, 2017 - Well kiddies, here you have it! This is the very first edition of our brand new weekly show ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE'S ROCK SHOW. We admit it's not the most inspired title but it gives you an idea  of what to expect with this new weekly program. This latest endeavor by ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE is not much of a new endeavor. It's more of a rebranding of our previous podcast series ROCKWIRED RADIO PROFILES. We feel a title like . Since 2010, ROCKWIRED RADIO PROFILES lasted for over 700 editions and featured music and interviews with various active rock artists such as WAYLAND, BOBAFLEX, ADELITA'S WAY, EDGE OF PARADISE, ANOTHER LOST YEAR, SAINT MOTEL, SHALLOW SIDE, BONZ, ADLER, STAR OFF MACHINE, ZEROKING, A.D.D., EMPERORS AND ELEPHANTS, STATION, ELISIUM, RED TIDE RISING, SILVERTUNG, MAXXXWELL CARLISLE, CITY OF THE WEAK, VAJRA, ELISIUM, MILITIA VOX and  DIAMOND LANE. Now, ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE has decided to scale back with a weekly podcast that still delivers on the music and exclusive interviews but also seeks to entertain it's audience. Isn't rock n roll all about keeping folks entertained? ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE'S ROCK SHOW is going to be a work in progress. Of course it will be a show about spinning new music from today's leading active rock artists but ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE's Editor-In-Chief BRIAN LUSH promises that there will be some surprises along the way. "Just as we are getting more adventurous with our content in our monthly magazine, we want this new weekly show to be just as exciting." says LUSH. "Given the doubts about rock n roll's prospects these days, we feel it is our duty to make a rock music show that is all about fun and agenda-free. The only agenda here is rock n roll."  The new podcast series will be available every Tuesday exclusively at ROCKWIRED.COM and iTUNES. CHECK OUT THE PODCAST AT:http://www.rockwired.com/temporarysite/RockShow1.mp3 TODAY'S PLAYLiST: WAYLAND-  THROUGH THE FiREA ROCKWIRED favorite has returned with a brand new single and this time it is preceding the release of a brand new album titled RINSE AND REPEAT. For the past five years, WAYLAND have toured the United States many times over and have put out stand alone singles, but now the band has turned  their attention to a long form release - their first since their debut EP WELCOME TO MY HEAD. THROUGH THE FIRE delivers all of the bombast that we've come to expect form these road dogs and has us excited to hear more form their upcoming album. UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE - THE GREY Being an American Indian-owned publication, we find it important to highlight new music that is coming out of Indian Country and one such band is UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE, a metal band hailing from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. We happened to catch their  electrifying live set at the ALBUQUERQUE CENTER FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE. Not the most rocking venue in the world, but these guys made the space feel like the VIPER ROOM with their hard hitting set. They've managed to take their show on the road beyond the confines of South Dakota and have rocked audiences throughout the American Southwest. DiSTRiCT AVENUE - REViVALHailing from Ontario, DISTRICT AVENUE is a band that has seen some changes in line up but also a change in name and perspective. Formerly known as KICKIN' KROTCH, the band, led by singer MIKE BERNARD, made an impression with their gritty hard rock sound. Now that sound has undergone some refinement thanks to producer VIC BRANCO. It can be heard loud and clear on the band's latest album EPOCH, where the lead single REVIVAL stands out proudly thanks apart to their INDIGENOUS MUSIC AWARD winning video. HEATHER GiLLiS - 100 MPHTwenty-year-olds get a bad rap these days but when you've got a twenty-year-old who boasts a gritty, blues, southern rock sound as HEATHER GILLIS does, we feel it's only fair to give them all of the props that they deserve. Her handiwork on the guitar and lap steel and as a singer was all hard won. This young woman cut her teeth on the road and on the stage with  the late BUTCH TRUCKS as a member of his band THE FREIGHT TRAIN. Now with her days of BUTCH TRUCKS' tutelage bhehind her she stands poised to make a name for herself as an artist on her own rockin' terms. SiGNALS OF BEDLAM - MASS APPEAL A New York City-based band boasting on edgy prog rock sound. It's the musicianship that has won us over here at ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE nand their newest album ESCAPING VELOCITY and it's single MASS APPEAL deserve a special kind of recognition. Definitely one of our favorite releases of 2017. KiLLSET - JUMP On the heals of an EP and debut album, the band KILLSET is really hitting it hard with their new release STFU. The album boasts the very hard rock that like to give it up for  but there are also some hip hop flourishes. Don't believe us? Just check out their take on the 1992 KRIS KROSS hit JUMP. The video is a fucking hoot. KiTTENHEAD - TUESDAYIt's been a while since we've given it up for punchy, punk rock band and KITTEN HEAD delivers. Not only for their raw rocking songcraft but for their intense live set that lets the audience in on the music. Shouldn't a rock music be this way. ANDREW W. BOSS - iNViNCiBLEWhen a guy says that it was attending a DEFTONES show that set him on his way to music making, I guess we better listen to him. ANDREW W. BOSS proves that he's a "boss" in every sense of the work with his brand new album INVINCIBLE. That man's rap and metal sensibilities proudly shine through. LiViNG COLOUR - COME ONSeven years was way too long to wait for a new release from these guys. LIVING COLOUR proved that their music and artistry were all intact with their 2010 album CHAIR IN THE DOORWAY and now they' prove that the influence  of the blues still has a place in the world on their forthcoming album SHADE. Don't think for a minute that these guys have turned the volume down here. Their interpretation of the blues is as loud and rockin' as anything that we've come to expect from these legends. LULLWATER - RELEASEHailing from Georgia, LULLWATER is a band that has taken it's musical queues from the music that was coming out of Seattle during the late eighties and early nineties. It should be no surprise that their new EP is a live album recorded in the same studio that PEARL JAM recorded out of. It's also less of surprise that the band has re-recorded PEARL JAM's RELEASE using original PEARL JAM drummer DAVE KRUSEN. OWL COMPANY - CELEBRATE AND KNEELThanks to the band's victory in ROCKWIRED's ARTIST OF THE MONTH contest, we've been introduced to folks in South American. These Sao Paulo-based rockers are on the verge of making their presence known in the States with what promises to be an electrifying tour and a raw, uncompromising debut album HORIZON. REMADA - A BETTER TOMORROWThe Chicago-based rock band has been through an insane amount of changes form being a solo hip-hop artist to an full on rock band. Their newest album seals the band's fate as an electrifying hard rock act destined for greatness and the kind of positive message that will elevate their material above the standard rock fare.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the legendary keyboard player Reese Wynans. Wynans is probably best known as the keyboard player in Stevie Ray Vaughan's band, Double Trouble. From '85 until Stevie's death, they were like a freight train - touring worldwide and recording smash albums like "Soul To Soul", "Live Alive" and the final SRV album, "In Step". Hardcore Allman Brothers fans also know that Reese was a member of the Second Coming, which, from November 1968 to March 1969 also included guitarist Dickey Betts and bassist Berry Oakley. That band was the launching pad for initial jam sessions with Duane Allman, Betts, Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe that led to the formation of the Allman Brothers Band. Reese also had stints with Boz Skaggs, Joe Ely and Jerry Jeff Walker. Since moving to Nashville in 1992, Wynans has played keyboards for a number of country artists including Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, and Hank Williams Jr. Wynans has also played for blues artists Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Colin James, Ana Popovic, and has been a full-fledged member of Joe Bonamassa's band for a number of years. Enjoy my conversation with Reese Wynans, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: If you listen to this show a lot you know I am a huge fan of the Allman Bros and the Allman Bros were all over the news this week. Rock and Roll Hall of Famers joined current and former members of the Allman Brothers Band for a 26-song salute to Gregg Allman Friday night in Atlanta. Sam Moore, Dr. John and Jackson Browne took turns interpreting Allman’s extensive catalog along with Vince Gill, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, John Hiatt, Zac Brown, Widespread Panic and others during "All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman," which was recorded to air on AXS TV in May. For the sold-out crowd at the historic 4,600-seat Fox Theatre, this rainy night in Georgia proved to be a dream jam. On February 18th Epic/Legacy Recordings will release Play All Night: Live at The Beacon Theatre 1992, a two disc set highlighting this historic run of shows. Kicking off on March 10th, these Beacon shows blended recent fan favorites like “Get On With Your Life,” “End Of The Line,” and “Nobody Knows” with such stone cold classics as “Statesboro Blues,” “Blue Sky,” “Jessica,” “Revival,” and of course, “Whipping Post,” all played with the distinctive invention and muscularity that defined this particular ABB line-up. Play All Night sees the Brothers unplug for a three-song acoustic interlude encompassing bare-boned renditions of Betts’ “Seven Turns” and Allman’s “Midnight Rider,” as well as a buoyant take on the Robert Johnson standard, “Come On In My Kitchen.” Also available on February 18th is Live At Great Woods, a feature-length concert DVD filmed at Massachusetts’ Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts in September of 1991. http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=userpage&file=content&page_id=65 William Hurt has been cast as the present-day version of Gregg Allman in the upcoming biopic Midnight Rider, Variety reports. The actor, who won an Oscar for his role in 1985's Kiss of the Spider Woman, is joining a cast that already includes All American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter, who plays Allman as a young man, and Wyatt Russell as his brother Duane Allman. Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed that Warren Haynes would also be departing. Both musicians have highly successful touring bands independent of the Brothers, with Trucks winning a Grammy in 2012. Trucks and Haynes were both influential lead guitarists with The Allman Brothers. Trucks, a former child prodigy and now the driving guitarist behind the Grammy-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, has been with the Brothers for 15 years, since he was twenty. Haynes, the roaring guitar genius behind Gov’t Mule, has been with the band since 1989. The move comes shortly after (incorrect) news from a Rolling Stone Magazine article, from a statement by Gregg Allman, that longtime bassist Oteil Burbridge would be leaving the band. Burbridge and Butch Trucks adamantly denied the rumors, which appear to have simply been a matter of miscommunication. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/influential-guitarists-leaving-allman-brothers-band-in-2015/ Last piece of news this week: From Brian MacDonald-Grammy-winning International superstar singer Jack Jones-fresh off his appearance in "American Hustle"-is recording a new CD (produced by Grammy/Oscar legend Rick Jarrard), and has picked one of Brian’s songs as the first single... recording started yesterday, and it should be out before the Oscars.
