Brian interviews Rick Hillier talks about his article "Canadian Irrelevance", about how he fears Canada has lost relevance internationally. Former Chief of the Defence Staff for Canadian Forces – the Canadian Forces' Highest Rank. General Rick Hillier joined the Canadian Forces in 1973. After completing his armour officer classification training, he joined his first regiment, the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) in Petawawa, Ontario. Subsequently, he served with, and later commanded, the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Canada and Germany. In 1998 General Hillier was appointed as the first Canadian Deputy Commanding General of III Corps, US Army in Fort Hood, Texas. In 2000 he took command of NATO's Stabilization Force's (SFOR) Multinational Division (Southwest) in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In May 2003 General Hillier was appointed as Commander of the Army and subsequently, in October 2003, he was selected as the Commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, Afghanistan. General Hillier was promoted to Chief of the Defence Staff on 4 February 2005. He retired in 2008.

This past weekend marked two years since Russia launched a full-on invasion of Ukraine. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians and soldiers have died or been wounded in the attacks. The bombs have turned towns and cities to rubble, and have led many people to flee the country. Canadian retired General Rick Hillier of Campbellton is doing what he can to help the Ukrainian military. The former Chief of Defense Staff is also urging Canadian governments to do more to help re-settle the flood of refugees who have come here. Hillier is chair of the Strategic Advisory Council that provides support and advice to the Ukrainian World Congress.

Jess Larochelle passed away this week. The CAF Private who was recommended for Canada's highest military honour, the Canadian Victoria Cross, for his valour in a battle against Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan in 2006. Lt. General Omer Lavoie, the Command Officer on the battlefield that day was a guest with us and described Pvt. Larochelle's valour in detail. General Rick Hillier, former Chief of the Defence Staff also appeared on our program to support the CDN VC for Jess Larochelle, but still there was military and political refusal. Pvt. Larochelle was critically wounded yet kept fighting to cover his fellow CAF soldiers. Pvt. Larochelle as recently as several months ago underwent surgeries related to wounds suffered in the battle. General Rick Hillier is a retired Canadian army officer who served as the Chief of the Defence Staff, the top-ranking officer in the Canadian military, from 2005 to 2008. Throughout his career, General Hillier has had the privilege and pleasure of commanding troops from the platoon to multi-national formation level within Canada, Europe, Asia and the United States. He has worked as a staff officer in several headquarters, first at the Army level in Montreal and later at the strategic level in Ottawa.Hillier was recently appointed as Chair of the Strategic Advisory Council by the Ukrainian World Congress where he offers support and advocacy for the Ukraine's defence militia and is an advisor the military side where the council can be of support or assistance. As part of this role, General Hillier is championing the #UniteWithUkraine campaign, which has been helping procure non-lethal protective equipment for Ukrainians since shortly after the war began. Hillier's skills and experience in international diplomacy, defence, procurement, intelligence, logistics, communications, law and fundraising will support the civilian defenders in Ukraine's Territorial Defence Force. Born in Newfoundland and Labrador, General Rick Hillier joined the Canadian Forces as soon as he could. Having enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1973 through the Regular Officer Training Plan program, he graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Canada announces 200 Senator Armoured Personnel Carriers (suited for police operations more than militaryh) will be shipped to Ukraine's military along with 39 Armoured Combat Support Vehicles (originally intended for the CAF). Justin Trudeau also mused about sending Canadian Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine. However, many of the Canadian Leopards are reporterd to be in sufficient disrepair to not be battle-worthy. A developing story we have been sharing with listeners. The Canadian Victoria Cross for a Canadian Armed Forces member? Canadian Army Private Jess Larochelle accomplished in Afghanistan on October 14, 2006, what we usually only see in Hollywood movies with the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Seriously wounded, with two of his fellow troopers dead, he battled insurgents solo protecting the rest of his squad. When Private Larochelle's name for the Canadian Victoria Cross was raised in a parliamentary motion Liberal MPs voted the nomination down. The DND as well decided "no.". Meanwhile Canada's former Chief of Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier appeared on our program supporting the CVC for Private Larochelle. Our guest as well believes Private Larochelle has earned the CVC. Guest: Lt. General Omer Lavoie, CAF Command Officer in the battle on October 14, 2006. General Lavoie witnessed what Private Larochelle accomplished. General Lavoie called in artillery support and alerted the gunners that mere meters separated his Canadian soldiers from the insurgents he wanted hit.    No CAF soldier has received a Victoria Cross since WWII. We're told Australians and Americans awarded their highest military honours to soldiers who fought in Afghanistan and these soldiers have personally reached out to Private Jess Larochelle, who has still not entirely recovered from the wounds he received in that battle. Last weekend I spoke with Bruce Moncur, CAF Afghanistan campaign veteran himself was badly wounded, about the call of his organization Valour in the Presence of the Enemy for the awarding of the Canadian Victoria Cross to Private Jess Larochelle for his heroism in battle in 2006.. Bruce Moncur and General Rick Hillier appeared on air with us a year ago with the same recommendation. The news these days is full of stories about Western politicians and leaders visiting Ukraine to see first hand the damage caused by Russia's invasion. But once those politicians head back to the safety of their own countries, Ukrainians are back to fighting in the streets for their sovereignty. Retired Canadian General Rick Hillier believes photo ops and promises of more weapons aren't enough, and he's decided to partner with the Ukrainian World Congress to help Ukraine's military.

Rick Hillier has a lifetime of service. From the age of 16, he moved towards a life in the Military. General Hillier has spend years of his life in various war zones around the world, and has earned a reputation among the troops as Canada's favorite Military Leader. From 2005-2008 General Hillier served as Canada's Top Soldier. As the CDS (Chief of Defense Staff) he was an unshakable advocate for both the active duty Military and Veterans. Because he refused to be a "yes man", the Politicians never knew what to do with him. His staunch advocacy for doing the "right thing" at times created rifts with his Political counterparts, but he stood firm regardless. Rick has earned nearly every medal and citation imaginable, including the Order of Canada. Today. Rick is a steadfast proponent for others to receive the appropriate medals and citations which they deserve. Canada has a bad habit of not recognizing it's battle exploits. Too many acts of Valor have not been acknowledged appropriately.
