We're sharing an episode from our friends at Latino USA! In this episode, producer Reynaldo Leaños Jr. travels to southern Arizona where one of the first major concentrations of surveillance towers on the southern border were built, and he looks at what these towers mean today, and for the future of those crossing, and living, there. The “virtual wall” across the U.S.-Mexico border is made up of things like drones, sensors, cameras and… surveillance towers. Both Democrats and Republicans have supported border technology through the years, but advocates and researchers argue that a virtual wall can be as controversial, and deadly, as a physical wall. Welcome to the recording of the live taping of Gaslit Nation featuring historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat, author of the bestselling book Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present, Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman, co-host of the Kremlin Files podcast, and reactions from our live audience. We recorded this episode at P&T Knitwear in New York City. Thank you to everyone who came out on a torrential rainy night. We hope to do another live event closer to the election. In this episode, we discuss whether Putin and Trump are winning and how to stop them; how to navigate the hellscape during a time of cults on the far-right and far-left; why are Americans having Ukraine fatigue even though Russian fascism helps prop up the Republican Party threatening our own democracy, and how to build a livable future even when everything feels especially demoralizing and overwhelming. The live audience Q&A will run as an upcoming bonus episode. Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation! This week's bonus episode is the live audience Q&A featuring Terrell Starr reporting from Ukraine during the recent virtual live taping of Gaslit Nation. That discussion includes how to stand up for yourself at work when you're being exploited and gaslit; what to do when those around you don't understand the urgency of the moment; and more! Thank you to everyone who keeps Gaslit Nation going especially during these difficult times. We could not make our show without you! Want to join the conversation? For this episode, Paul Kershaw, Aleem Punja (National Operating Officer, Aga Khan Council for Canada), and Ene Underwood (CEO, Habitat for Humanity GTA) wrestle with hard truths Canadians must face to make housing affordable again for younger generations and newcomers: the interplay of housing and immigration policy; renegotiating Canadians' expectations about home ownership and wealth; Habitat for Humanity's innovative adaptations to the GTA's housing market; what we can learn from places that are making strides on housing affordability; and how we can take action in our own lives. This episode builds on a three-part discussion series, "Housing in the GTA," organized by Generation Squeeze, the Future Ready Initiative, and Habitat for Humanity GTA this past spring. Their shared goal was to help Torontonians cut through distracting rhetoric about housing, so we could move more quickly to implement solutions. The series received generous funding from the Canerector Foundation and was beautifully hosted by the Ismaili Centre – Toronto, with support from many dedicated volunteers. Our guests: Aleem Punja is the National Operations Officer for the Future Ready Initiative, a flagship community-based, multi-service organization of the Aga Khan Council for Canada. He also holds the position of Vice-Chair on the Board of Directors for the Toronto Lands Corporation and is an Executive Member of Civic Action's Emerging Leaders Network. Ene Underwood has been the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area for over a decade. There she leads a team that defies the odds by helping working families build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership in what is characterized as one of most challenging residential real estate markets in North America. Ene was also member of Ontario's Housing Affordability Task Force which filed its report with the Ontario government in February 2022 setting an ambitious goal of 1.5 million new homes over the next decade. San Francisco is grappling with a crisis on its streets, which are plagued by drug overdoses, homelessness and crime. Mayor London Breed is taking new steps to address the drug crisis, but some civic groups say that's not enough. One of the newer advocacy organizations that has emerged in the city is TogetherSF Action, which is led by a former city hall aide and a billionaire venture capitalist. The group has been hosting town halls to explore solutions, educate voters and put more pressure on city officials. It will hold another one tonight in San Francisco to focus on what more can be done to end the open-air drug markets and stop the rash of fentanyl and other drug overdoses. In today's edition of The State of California, KCBS Radio political reporter and host Doug Sovern and KCBS Radio news anchors Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising spoke with Kanishka Cheng, executive director and cofounder of TogetherSF Action.

On August 27, 2022, the Faith Formation Conference was held at the Renaissance Hotel. All adults, especially catechists of the Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma were invited to this year's Conference focused on the "Sacraments: Mysterious Encounters with Christ." One of the keynote speakers was Monica Ashour. Holding two Masters from the University of Dallas—one in Theological Studies and one in Humanities, Monica Ashour is an international speaker, author of 28 books, President and Director of Content Creation for the Theology of the Body Evangelization Team, known as TOBET. Named in 2010 by the Catholic National Register as one of the top six speakers on Saint John Paul's seminal work known as the Theology of the Body, Monica and her team have completed a pre-school through 8th-grade program called The Body Matters for schools, faith formation, and family catechesis. It has been called a “game-changer.” Monica was awarded by the Catholic Press Association for Honorable Mention—First Time Author of a Book, Everybody Has Something to Give. She also received the Excellence in Publishing Award for Children's Books for her Every BODY Has a Body: God Made Us to Love, from her series called ToB for Kids for 4-7 year-olds and ToB for Tots for 2-5 year-olds, (Pauline Books and Media). Monica and her team wrote the Theology of the Body Marriage Preparation program, lauded by Cardinal Dolan of New York and Archbishop Aquila in Denver. Available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, this marriage prep program is used throughout the nation. In May 2015, Miss Ashour was a participant for an ad hoc committee in Washington DC for the Pontifical Council for the Family. In November 2011, Monica presented a talk “Teaching TOB to Teens” at the Theology of the Body International Symposium in Rome. She was also a participant in the International Summit on Lay Leadership with Cardinal Arinze in Rome. Before becoming an international speaker, Monica served as a campus minister at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Texas A&M University from 1996 to 1999. There she launched the now nationwide Nun Run, in which young women travel around the nation visiting convents. Before and after her stint at St. Mary's, Monica enjoyed 20 years teaching theology and literature in grade school and high school classrooms. Monica was the recipient of Bishop (now Cardinal) Farrell's 2008 Pro-Life Award for Civic Action and was named to the Hall of Fame for her alma mater, Nolan Catholic High School in Ft. Worth. Monica enjoys discussion groups, exercise, bridge, and coaching softball.

The Global Wind Energy Council and The Conduit Club have partnered this year to drive the conversation ahead of COP27 in Egypt. We'll look at the transversal issues facing those fighting to tackle climate change, and the topics that which will be top of the agenda for world leaders in November. One of those key challenges will be ensuring a just transition; one that takes every region forward to a world powered by renewable energy, and one where everybody has left polluting fossil fuels behind. The partnership's first podcast looks at one of the threats to the transition: The rise of misinformation. We spoke to the panel of the recent GWEC/Conduit Club event on the subject, about why this problem is spiking, and what organisations are doing about it (or not doing about it, as is often the case). GWEC's Reshmi Ladwa and Ben Backwell are joined by Jennie King, who is Head of Civic Action and Education at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, and Mai Rosner, who is a campaigner at Global Witness, looking at the Digital Threats to Democracy.
On this episode Paul talks to Jennie King, Head of Civic Action and Education at the Institute of Strategic Dialogue, leading their efforts to translate research into frontline programming and response. Jennie provides regular briefings for UK government departments and regulators on approaches to media literacy, as well as overseeing the ISD's growing portfolio on Climate Mis and Disinformation, supporting a worldwide coalition identifying and analysing counter related harms. This is a fascinating and timely conversation delving deep into the murky world of Mis and Disinformation and its impact on making positive forward momentum against climate change.
After emancipation, aspects of the legal system were reshaped to maintain control of Black lives and labor. Historian Robert T. Chase outlines the evolution of convict leasing in the prison system. And Historian Brandon T. Jett explores the commercial factors behind the transition from extra-legal lynchings to police enforcement of the color line. We examine the connections between these early practices and the more familiar apparatuses of today's justice system—from policing to penitentiaries. Learning for Justice has great tools for teaching about criminal justice during Jim Crow and after, like this article “Teaching About Mass Incarceration: From Conversation to Civic Action”. Here's the song “Jody” that Dr. Chase describes using in the classroom (from Bruce Jackson's Wake Up Dead Man). To learn how coerced labor evolves after Jim Crow, you can read his book, We Are Not Slaves: State Violence, Coerced Labor, and Prisoners' Rights in Postwar America. Check out Lynching in LaBelle, an amazing digital history project that Dr. Jett created with his students. And to learn more about the evolution of policing, you can read his book, Race, Crime, and Policing in the Jim Crow South.
