This week I'm replaying an amazing discussion I had one year ago with registered dietitian Glenys Oyston.  She lost weight, kept it off for years, and was considered a true success story. What people didn't realize is she didn't feel successful at all but instead was a full-time food and body obsession. Details on the episode are below. I'll be back next week with a new episode!!!  * * *  I am so excited to bring you this latest episode of Speaking of Hungry! I’ve been listening to the Dietitians Unplugged podcast with Glenys Oyston and Aaron Flores for quite some time now. Recently I was reading Christy Harrison’s Anti-Diet book and Glenys popped up. Then I was listening to the Pursuing Private Practice podcast and Glenys was the guest. I am beyond thrilled that Glenys, a Los Angeles-based anti-diet dietitian, joined me to chat on Speaking of Hungry. I know you’re going to like this one! Glenys joins me and talks about her relentless pursuit of weight loss, how losing weight was never enough, and that keeping weight off for several years meant taking obsessive measures.  We talk about: Her dieting history starting in her early 20’s that led her to sign up for the National Weight Control Registry. How Glenys was a weight-loss “unicorn” who kept the weight off for over five years but this wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies.  She explains the obsessive measures required to keep her weight off.  How her weight loss journey led her to pursue becoming a registered dietitian.  How her reaction to stressful times in her life was to tackle her weight and try to shrink her body.  When her weight loss pursuit took a “dark turn” and persisted despite the struggle to keep losing.  Her work with clients and Health at Every Size (HAES) program for diabetics currently in the works with Rebecca Scritchfield. Take your mind off of all that’s going on in the world right now. While most of us are in quarantine, we must be mindful that we still have needs and we still have our recovery to work on. We may not be able to give it 100% at this time but we have to try to give it something! How is it possible for Diabetes management and Intuitive Eating to go together? Diabetes you need to manage blood sugar, whereas on a superficial level you might hear that Intuitive Eating means you can eat anything. Can you really eat anything if you have diabetes? And is this even what Intuitive Eating means? In this episode with Glenys Oyston, from Dare To Not Diet, Glenys also talks extensively about her journey from chronic dieter to Intuitive Eater. One interesting thing about Glenys's story involve her weight gain over the years as she ditched the diet mentality, as dieting had kept her deprived and underweight for years. Oftentimes we are so afraid of weight gain, so Glenys's story is impactful and inspiring.  Glenys's is a full-time anti-dietician and she truly walks the talk and has been through the struggles and can help you if you struggle with dieting.  Be sure to check out Glenys's Diabetes course here: https://selfcare4diabetes.com.

We can't ignore the genetic reality of disease. Yes, there are things you can do to support your health - but it sure isn't dieting. It's the fourth episode of Beyond Weight - a NEW series that asks the question “how can we manage health concerns without focusing on weight loss, food restriction, and body shame?” and today, Jill is speaking with Glenys Oyston - a dietician from Los Angeles who helps people recover from eating and body images issues created by toxic diet culture through the Health at Every Size® and non-diet eating approaches. Glenys works with metabolic conditions like Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol - and today we are going to chat about a new model for managing these illnesses. In this episode, we discuss: Health at Every Size has HEALTH as it's first word! We can work toward health in any body. Why there's not enough long-term evidence to support drastic restriction for metabolic concerns…and why it might cause more harm The problem with looking at short-term results in studies Weight cycling (yo-yo dieting) as a major cause of inflammation in the body Being a health practitioner that asks about health markers BESIDES food and weight (like sleep apnea!) Why structure in eating can be very helpful with metabolic conditions Circling back to Gentle Nutrition when the time is right Pulling the best from conventional diets - like the DASH diet - without falling into restriction and misery The safety of dieting - and how to feel safe without restricting Healthism - the beginning of illness blame and shame Taking the shame out of needing medications What weight loss focused studies aren't looking at How addressing these issues is might be less horrible when you aren't restricting Links: To sign up for information about the launch of Self-Care for Diabetes: https://www.bodykindnessbook.com/haescarefordiabetes/ Glenys' website: https://daretonotdiet.com/

I have diabetes, and need to make better choices. Lately I'm in a heavy food eating, which leads me to be sleepy and inactive. My diabetes dietitian focuses on counting carbs, and I haven't counted carbs in years. I've given up and given in to the cravings. I've gained weight, watched my blood pressure rise, and my eyes fill with sadness when I look in the mirror and wonder how much over X pounds is on my 5ft frame. I actually feel afraid for my heart and all the extra work it has to do now while my weight continues to rise. There have been times when I actually enjoyed drinking "green drinks," and having my brain and body feel healthy. Grilling out, experimenting with recipes, yoga, swimming, and such. I know my food choices today make my vision blurry, blood sugar high, and cause me to make not so good decisions because my brain isn't as clear when I "exercise and eat right. " I want a strong body again. I want to find joy in a walk or kayaking or fitting comfortable in a booth having brunch with friends. How do I get back to that? How do I get back to wanting the healthy choices, the joy in experimenting with fruits, vegetables, protein, and fats in recipes? How with limited insurance and temporary employment do I find a good dietitian? Right now I feel like you food have won. You are keeping me hostage in a body that isn't strong, and makes me physically uncomfortable, and feeds my diabetes instead of my spirit. Lost my way & afraid for my life... There are many pathways to a full-time private practice, and Jennifer’s guest Glenys Oyston shares her journey of an incremental process to realizing her dream. Listen to her inspiring story of discovering Health at Every Size, niching down, and overcoming impostor syndrome on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast. Glenys tells us about her experience of being a restrictive dieter in her twenties, and how she chose the Dietetics industry with the career goal of being a weight loss dietitian. Throughout her years of course work, her obsession with food restriction and fear of gaining weight was dominating her life, and upon discovering HAES as a student, reflects on the transformation it had on her perspective, breaking her free from the diet lifestyle. Incorporating the principles of HAES with her inpatients and primary care work with spinal cord injuries and geriatrics, she met her future podcast partner Aaron Flores, RDN whom she learned about Intuitive Eating. All the while, she worked full-time with the dream of one day having her own private practice. Glenys tells how she transitioned into a practice incrementally over three years, and dealt with impostor syndrome by pushing through and learning by doing. “The only way to get through the fear is to go straight through it, and keep working at it until you’ve helped enough people that you start to feel good about it.” – Glenys Oyston Some of the topics discussed include: How discovering Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating broke her free from restrictive eating issues, and empowered her to be okay with her natural body size.  The journey of starting her private practice with an incremental progression over several years; first with a blog in late 2014, ‘Dare to Not Diet’, then a podcast in 2015 with Aaron Flores, to taking her first clients in 2016. How she learned as she went, and has benefited from being one of the first to join the Pursuing Private Practice program (hyperlink?). https://jennifermcgurkrdn.teachable.com/p/ppp-for-ie How she dealt with fear of failure and impostor syndrome at each stage, and has built confidence by taking action and putting things in perspective to enjoy the ride.  Why she has narrowed down her niche of only working in areas she enjoys, and knows when to refer clients to other dietitians, without considering them as competition. The realization of her dream of full-time practice, and by making space for networking, more clients came. “I’m in competition with the diet industry. I don’t buy the traditional competition model. I’m there to lift up my fellow dietitians.” – Glenys Oyston   For more information, visit https://www.pursuingprivatepractice.com/23   SPONSOR INFO: This show is sponsored by a free guide for dietitians, The Top 5 Reasons Your Client Binge Eats (and How To Support Them In Their Journey To Feel Fabulous About Food). Our guest today is Glenys Oyston, registered dietitian, and food therapist who co-hosts the podcast, “Dietitians Unplugged”, with fellow anti-diet dietitian, Aaron Flores.  Listen in as Glenys and Marielle talk about fat-positivity, body acceptance and eating intuitively instead of dieting. While we are all born with the ability to sense our internal hunger and fullness signals if you have a history of chronic dieting or disordered eating you may have lost touch with these signals. There is a way back and it involves patience, putting aside the desire to lose weight and connecting with others who are on a non-diet path.    Show Highlights: Fat isn’t inherently unhealthy, despite what we’ve been told We come in all shapes and sizes. Body diversity is a real thing! Trying to fix larger bodies is detrimental How disordered eating habits have become the norm Reclaiming the word “fat” as a neutral descriptor of a body size The words “overweight” and “obese” pathologize and medicalize larger bodies  Addressing eating concerns without a focus on weight The HAES (Health At Every Size) philosophy Intuitive Eating principles Eating disorders happen in folks of all sizes The myth that people put on weight as a protective factor How the fear of weight gain makes it harder to eat intuitively  The misconceptions of “Body Acceptance” Dealing with fat-shaming doctors and setting boundaries The risks of weight-cycling The importance of connecting to the robust fat-acceptance community online It’s actually ok to be fat   Links & Resources:  https://cookierevolution.org https://daretonotdiet.wordpress.com https://www.facebook.com/DareToNotDiet https://www.facebook.com/glenys.oyston http://dietitiansunplugged.libsyn.com Aaron Flores & Glenys Oyston Podcasts https://lindabacon.org/health-at-every-size-book/ - Linda Bacon https://benourished.org - offers programs, workshops, retreats, and e-courses for individuals looking to reclaim Body Trust® https://danceswithfat.org/blog/ - Ragen Chastain http://www.secretsfromtheeatinglab.com - Traci Mann

#45 - Is This a Diet Too? Why 'Healthy Eating' is So Confusing for Non-Dieters, with HAES Dietitian Glenys Oyston and Body Image Coach Sarah Vance

Body Kindness

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2017 51:28

In this episode I talk with fellow HAES dietitian Glenys Oyston and body image coach Sarah Vance about the confusing and difficult space between “non dieting” and “healthy eating”. There’s a process to changing to a non-dieter, which includes letting go of food rules, and then working with your individual food preferences as you build intuitive eating skills and learn how to “feel your feels”. We go many different places in this conversation from the “Unicorn Drink Craze” that showed us how sugar phobic our culture really is today and how emotional eating can be informative and even helpful in life, especially while you’re overcoming dieting and working on coping with negative emotions in ways other than food. Overall, we complain that dieting has ruined the idea of healthy eating because it labels individual foods as good or bad vs one’s overall pattern of eating, which literally can include all foods. We agree that “healthy eating” is highly individual and should not be tied to weight. We close out our chat about weight stigma and the fact that we wouldn’t be so obsessed with “healthy eating” and dieting if we didn’t have fat phobia. Plus we reaffirm that giving up on dieting is not giving up on health (total MYTH!) and in fact giving up on dieting is one of the most important things you can do for mental health. About Glenys Glenys Oyston is a registered dietitian and eating coach who dares women to stop dieting and start living. Dealing with all of these issues related to food is exhausting! Struggling with shame, acceptance, an eating disorder, and much more takes so much energy. You are not a sham, but bariatric surgery as a solution to food peace is a sham. Bariatric surgery is a stomach amputation. It does not have any documented long-term health outcomes, and we do NOT have enough data at this time to suggest that this surgery is a choice that will enhance personal wellness. In any health profession it's important to have size diversity! Fat dietitians, fat gym teachers, and fat healthcare providers are important. If you want to hear more about this topic, check out Love, Food Episode 8 with Glenys Oyston. Many people who choose to study nutrition that have an eating disorder background pursue it because they hope it will help them learn more about food for the sake of their eating disorder, not because they actually want to be dietitians. Recovery from an eating disorder requires a great recovery team! It is so, so common for dietitians and dietitians in training to seek out their own dietitian. If privacy is an issue, many practitioners work online now as well! Question whether or not being a dietitian is for you! It's possible that when you find recovery, it may not be something that speaks to you anymore. This can be a hard decision, but you will get through it! Research and data on how to help people who have had bariatric surgery recover from an eating disorder is sparse because it's a new experience, but it is becoming more common, and there are definitely practitioners out there who can help. REJECTING weight loss is going to be an essential part of the healing process! One cannot heal from an eating disorder while they pursue weight loss!!! When you seek out treatment, make sure your support team is weight neutral. You may even be able to find a Health at Every Size practitioner! People are more likely to experience an eating disorder if they have PCOS. It really isn't about food... it's about stigma, shame, and food lies. Don't give body hate more power!! Almost no one is free from beliefs, rules and attitudes about food. But some of us have experienced an undue amount of emotional pain as a result, riding this rollercoaster of harshly conditional self-love. And some people develop full blown eating disorders where rules, punishment, and rebellion formulate some of the most wretched, soul-destroying patterns to break free from. But ultimately, whether you have an eating disorder or are caught up in dieting and other disordered forms of eating, the truth is it's probably not about the food. No matter what our personal opinion, anyone who has improved their relationship to food through the program is valid and their stories are their own! You are not alone! Many people who deal with addiction to substances also deal with difficult relationships to food. OA and abstinence: Many people who went to OA wanted to find abstinence from dieting, but instead were told to be abstinent from certain food groups (e.g. sugar, flours). "The pursuit of weight loss is part of that powerlessness that we feel over food." - Julie When we pursue weight loss, we inevitably focus heavily on food choice and become obsessional. But this isn't a failure, and this doesn't mean you are addicted to food! Instead, it is our body's way of making sure we don't starve it. Once we have unconditional permission to eat, the addictive feeling of food tends to dissipate, and the feeling of being powerless around food becomes less of an issue. The spiritual component and group support of OA can be super beneficial and healing for some people. Eating Disorder Anonymous (EDA): no abstinence required, but also incorporates the group support and spiritual components that many people find fulfilling in OA! Download Episode! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Aaron Flores from Calabasas, California. Aaron is a registered dietitian nutritionist who specializes in Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size (HAES). As he describes on his website, he promotes a non-diet, weight neutral approach to changing behaviors that lead to improved health. He says "If you feel like you’ve tried every diet, your weight has yo-yo’ed for years and you are ready to stop fighting your body and learn to love food again, then I am the dietitian for you." I’ve had Aaron in my ears for a while now, because he is the man that hosts one of my favorite podcasts, namely Dietitians Unplugged, with the fabulous Glenys Oyston, whom I introduced you to in episode 12 of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast. So it is high time you meet the other half of that wonderful podcast. And you will! Listen to Aaron talk about: – How he came up with his Star Wars analogy for Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size versus diet-culture – How he experienced his body as a boy – How he and his family related to food – Why he’ll never forget his first trip to the dietitian with his mother – What the dietitian told him to do and why that set him up for the diet-binge-cycle – How he judged his body as an adolescent – How he ended up dieting for years and why he stopped – How diets fail all people, and why people still think "they failed" at the diet – What made him decide to become a registered dietitian – What he thought of Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size when we first heard it – Why he clung to the idea of weight-loss for as long as he did – How his transition into Intuitive Eating went for him – How he is working on accepting his own body – Why his transition into Intuitive Eating made him eventually leave his job and open his own practice – What he has learned from his whole transformation – What made see the logic behind a weight-neutral approach to health – Why learning about Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size is a lot like the movie "The Matrix" – How he handles his own judgmental side towards people, diets and bodies – Why he calls himself a feminist man and how he recognizes his privilege as a white male – How he wants to raise his boys – Why he is so grateful for his wife... ... And so much more! Download Episode! Hello, lovely radicals! Time for another podcast ride; hold on tight! In this episode of the "Life Unrestricted" podcast, we are getting to know Glenys Oyston. Glenys is a Registered Dietitian who does NOT believe in dieting; she has seen behind the diet-culture BS and has become a Health At Every Size dietitian. Like many of her fellow RD’s that follow the Health At Every Size (HAES, for short) principles, she knows that it’s much more helpful to improve our relationship to our bodies and food than focusing on weight-loss. She has been a diet-victim for decades, just like many of us, and she has experienced just how much attention and congratulations we get when weight is lost. Therefore she knows exactly why so many people dread to gain weight. But instead of keeping on living in the pre-hell of either lusting after food or restricting it, she got taught a better way. She got educated about HAES, Health At Every Size, and as she says, it has transformed her life and the way she thinks about weight, diet and body image. Needless to say, she never dieted again and she is doing fabulous. She has helped countless humans ditch diet-mentality and find true self-acceptance and a healthy body image. She also writes the amazing blog called "Dare To Not Diet" and she is a fellow podcast lady. Together with Aaron Flores, she hosts the highly recommendable podcast "Dietitians Unplugged". Glenys tells us how she came to be a Health At Every Size (HAES) dietitian, and how the process of stepping out of the dogmatic diet-culture chains has helped her—finally, in her forties—to develop a relaxed and uncomplicated, peaceful relationship with food and her body. She shares her story with us and you’ll hear: – Why she never learned to eat balanced meals as a kid – How her mother’s diet-mentality kept her from eating with her daughter – How she ended up comforting herself with cookies and cake – Why she ended up repeating what her mother did: go on strict, restrictive diets – How dieting kept her mental and physical bandwidth trapped and made her obsess about food – How an incredibly lucky coincidence saved her from another 20+ years of yoyo-dieting – How studying the Health At Every Size (HAES) principles helped her free herself from eternal dieting – How she gave up on the "thin person-game" and learned to accept her body in its natural, happy shape – Why she thinks it’s no coincidence that diet-culture started skyrocketing after women got the right to – What is lost on the world when the majority of the female population is dieting/focusing so much energy on weight-loss – How diets are just as addictive as any other coping mechanism – Why it’s never really about the weight or our body, even when we think it is – What we have to work on before we can successfully ditch diets and embody ourselves – How she and her HAES-colleagues help their clients to un-diet and re-allow their previously restricted foods into their diet – Why the whole process of un-dieting requires a lot of trust, courage and strength – What her deepest wish is – What she would like to be remembered for... ...And so much more! Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. A nutrition student writes to food because she feels ashamed of her fat body. Although she knows diets are harmful she is tempted because of the fear of rejection: from her peers, potential employers, future clients, and herself. Julie calls Glenys Oyston RD to discuss possible solutions for this student. Key Points: This student is not experiencing a nutrition problem yet a lack of exposure to size diversity messages. Could nutrition students be given more opportunities for personal health and well-being by exposure to more unconventional nutrition education such as attuned eating, pleasurable movement, and health at every size approaches? Not everyone wants to work with a slim dietitian. Glenys Oyston describes her transition from a body disparaging to weight neutral nutrition student which began after listening to Linda Bacon speak in a class. This helped her improve her body image while promoting healthy eating experiences. It also helped her appreciate she is much more than her body: she has thoughts, feelings, ideas, etc that mean much more to her. Is there size discrimination in the dietetics profession? We say yes. Advocating for size acceptance can improve job satisfaction yet it is up to the individual on whether to speak up or not. Find allies on-line and unite! Consider personal psychotherapy to proactively help your relationship with food and body image. Hang in there Fat Nutrition Student! Things get better as you get more exposure to the profession and the diversity of body types. Show Notes: Dietitian's and Their Weight Struggles from Today's Dietitian May 2014.
