Should you do strength training while pregnant? Today we will talk about strength training for pregnancy, birth and beyond. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I believe that strength training can help prepare your body for birth, help you be more comfortable during pregnancy, and help you rehab postpartum. In this conversation we will discuss common misconceptions about strength training during pregnancy, including safe practices, warning signs and when to return to strength training postpartum. For years we've understood the strong link between exercise and physical health. What has been underappreciated is the link between exercise, physical activity, and mental health. Our guest in episode 116, Dr. A'Naja Newsome knows this well, but also knows the narrative is changing. This paradigm shift is not a moment too soon given the severity of the mental health crisis in America. As Dr. Newsome points out in our conversation the burden of disease from mental illness is on par with chronic conditions like obesity and diabetes.Dr. Newsome reminds us that all is not lost. Physical activity and exercise can play a prominent role in reducing depression, anxiety, and help us cope with stressors better. Those of us who exercise regularly certainly know this already. Sadly, as we'll discuss, this perspective isn't adopted and broadly operationalized in the mental health community. Dr. Newsome is seeking to change that through her research, advocacy, and education of fitness professionals. Join us as we dive into the critical concepts fitness professionals need to consider about helping their clients improve their mental health and treat mental illness through movement.Show Notes Page: https://wellnessparadoxpod.com/episode116Our Guest: Dr. A'Naja Newsome PH.D., CEP, RCRSPA respected educator with a doctorate in interdisciplinary education with an emphasis in exercise science, public health, measurement and research from the University of South Florida, Dr. Newsome is a nationally recognized presenter and has represented a number of leading organizations as a master trainer, including American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, and Technogym USA. In the latest episode of The Flip N' Shift Podcast, my guests are David and Kaitlyn Beiser. David and Kaitlyn Beiser of Atlas Strength and Wellness. David Beiser is a corrective exercise specialist and is a trained C.H.E.K (Stands for Corrective Exercise and High-performance Kinesiology) Practitioner. Kaitlyn is a Certified Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM-EP) and Certified Transition Lifestyle Solutions nutrition & wellness coach. A Corrective Exercise Specialist is an expert in human movement assessment. David can accurately analyze a client's movement patterns, identify overactive and under active muscle groups and compensations. Corrective Exercise is imperative in identifying and addressing imbalances that cause posture, stability, and mobility issues. Their mission is to guide and educate people to reach the next pinnacle in their fitness and health journey. Atlas Strength and Wellness encompasses a blend of holistic lifestyle coaching, corrective exercise and soft tissue release techniques with strength & conditioning in order to improve each client's quality of life. We all know the expression no pain no gain. But is that really the best approach to achieving your health and fitness goals? Science is telling us that not all exercises work for everybody. Sprain and Strain is the most common injury in exercise. It can cause acute and chronic issues in the body which can be painful, costly and emotionally devastating. In this episode, we will be discussing how to prevent strain and pain in exercise. Website: https://www.atlasstrengthwellness.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/atlasstrengthwellness Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/atlasstrengthwellness/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kaitlyn-beiser-0a16b760/ Julie Walz discussing topics on strains and sprains with Kaitlyn and David Beiser. "What should we understand about sprains, strains and pain recovery for clients?" asked Julie "We tell people, "Pain is the last thing to arrive and the first thing to go." said Kaitlyn. Behavioral addiction to exercise is also a real thing – many want to add to the exercise program or train harder than what we recommend. Other challenges that are hard to admit include a sense of insecurity, loss of emotional validation or self-esteem since they cannot work, exercise, or participate in sport to the same degree, explained David." Julie asks "We all go to the gym and follow online exercise regimens that seem to be one size fits all approach. Which often is the wrong approach to exercise. You are educating clients on how to be intentional and less reactionary with exercise. Can you further explain this approach?" David explains intentional exercise, "Yes, it's really about awareness and intention. In essence, people need to exercise for their unique situation and body type. We start with specific assessments in two areas 1) physical and 2) lifestyle or wellness. The purpose is to help us design a better program and coach more specifically, but more importantly it raises the awareness in a person so they can be more intentional in their choices." Common signs include self-doubt, feeling drained most of the time, a sense of helplessness, and feeling trapped or alone. The good news? Some habits and skills can help you recover, prevent it from happening in the first place and put yourself in a position where you can lift yourself and others. In this episode of the LIFT podcast, I'm talking to Dr Lisa Belanger. Today I sit down with a former Canadian Pro Triathlete, Certified Exercise Physiologist, PhD candidate, and an online triathlon coach, Alex Coates. While she's in their lab during our interview, I get to ask how they perform their test on athletes who contribute to their studies and she tells me about the current experiment she is working on. Alex had an amazing transition from a high school graduate to pro triathlete at a young age. Her various experiences when pursuing her performance goals led her to train and coach more athletes. She also explains what makes young athletes get faster. As we talk more about gaining weight and what nutrients to take in, I ask Alex how she convinces athletes to eat more when gaining weight and her insights about following different diets. We also talk about Alex's area of specialty - overtraining. And how to avoid getting yourself into trouble by training too much without recovering. Her advice goes against traditional training thought so you might be surprised what she recommends for a training regime. Understanding range of motion and positioning to create programs. How Alex accurately gauges range of movement. Overcoming clients “cheating” in data collection. Doctor Colby Kash has been studying health and wellness for a decade and graduated from the University of Florida's College of Health and Human Performance with a Bachelor's in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology. After he received his Doctor of Chiropractic and Master of Science degree in Applied Clinical Nutrition at New York Chiropractic College, he continued to further his education as a Certified ADAPT Functional Medicine Practitioner, become a Certified Exercise Physiologist at the American Academy of Sport's Medicine, a Certified Personal Trainer at the National Academy of Sport's Medicine, and a Certified Functional Range Conditioning mobility specialist. While in chiropractic school, Dr. Kash was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and inflammatory arthritis both caused by autoimmunity. Through his relentless self-education and thousands of hours of research, Dr. Kash put together an intensive autoimmune remission program including radical lifestyle, diet, and biohacks that put him into 100% remission without the need for lifelong immunosuppressants. He has now dedicated his life to use his knowledge to remove the pain and disability shadowing people's lives; so, they can become the best version of themselves and give society their full potential in their respective fields. Some topics we cover include: What happens in our bodies when we have an autoimmune disease Contributing factors of autoimmune disease The different types and what areas in the body they affect Why we have such high rates of autoimmune disease Why prioritizing absorption is more important than eating healthy foods Diets, lifestyle changes and modalities for healing oneself
