In this episode, my guest is Dr. Diego Bohórquez, PhD, professor of medicine and neurobiology at Duke University and a pioneering researcher into how we use our ‘gut sense.' He describes how your gut communicates to your brain and the rest of your body through hormones and neural connections to shape your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. He explains how your gut senses a range of features such as temperature, pH, the macro- and micronutrients in our foods, and much more and signals that information to the brain to affect our food preferences, aversions, and cravings. Dr. Bohórquez describes his early life in the Amazon jungle and how exposure to traditional agriculture inspired his unique expertise combining nutrition, gastrointestinal physiology, and neuroscience. We discuss how the gut and brain integrate sensory cues, leading to our intuitive “gut sense” about food, people, and situations. This episode provides a scientific perspective into your gut sense to help you make better food choices and, indeed, to support better decision-making in all of life. Today I want to share with you the inspiring story of my long-time client Carla. Carla has been on an amazing health and weight loss journey, overcoming a lifetime of struggles with her body image and self-confidence. Growing up overweight and insecure, Carla tried endless diets and programs in an attempt to lose weight, but nothing ever seemed to work long-term.  Finally, in 2006 she made the drastic decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery as a "last resort." Amazingly, Carla reached her goal weight of 150 lbs within a year and a half after surgery, and has managed to maintain it ever since.  This surgery was not a simple fix - it required Carla to make major changes to her lifestyle and mindset in order to see lasting results.  Today Carla is focusing more on her psychology and personal growth than just nutrition and exercise. She still battles the voice inside telling her she's "not good enough," a remnant of her difficult childhood and adolescent experiences. But Carla is dedicated to her continual improvement and showing up as the best, most positive version of herself in all areas of life.  Carla has now decided to become a certified nutrition coach herself! She wants to pay forward everything she has learned on her journey and help others who are struggling with their weight and self-image. Carla is starting the process of nutrition coaching certification training to be able to impact and transform lives. At the end of this episode I put out a call-to-action for any listeners who may be interested in receiving free coaching from Carla over the next couple months as she goes through the certification program. This is a great opportunity to both help Carla complete the required practice coaching hours, and also get personalized guidance and support for your own health goals entirely for free. If you are interested, simply send me an email (at coach@silveredgefitness.com) briefly explaining your background and goals, and I'll forward it along to Carla. Carla's story reminds us that sustainable health and weight loss requires a mindset shift above all else. Her journey demonstrates the incredible power we have to take control of our lives and become the person we wish to be. As you'll hear, I'm clearly very inspired by Carla's perseverance and personal growth, and I'm certain she will make an amazing coach herself. This episode provides a motivational and uplifting story about overcoming the odds to achieve our dreams.

In today's episode Megan shares her pregnancy and birth experience following gastric bypass surgery. Despite this she wasn't deemed high risk but her obstetrician chose to do a few extra blood tests during pregnancy to ensure she was absorbing enough minerals. The major pregnancy concerns following weight loss surgery are low birth weight and early labour but Megan didn't experience either of them. She admits that she was worried about whether her pregnant belly would show and how she would be treated as a bigger woman but despite a negative GP experience at 6 weeks, she had a smooth and enjoyable pregnancy.      Did you know I wrote a book? When we hear about fertility issues, we often hear stories from the female's perspective. In the middle of his own family building process, Director Tom Webb realized that he didn't often hear the male's point of view as a couple battles infertility. Because of this, Tom set out to make a documentary, The Easy Bit, that focused on some of the physical aspects, but mostly the emotional journey a male goes through as he supports his partner and they navigate the challenge together.   The Easy Bit explores the lives of six men who tell their stories openly and honestly about the male perspective of fertility treatment—looking through the camera lens, examining maleness through society's perception, and how fertility impacts maleness. Tom shares the experience of creating the Easy Bit along with his difficult personal fertility journey with his wife, addressing the difference between the United States and United Kingdom's healthcare systems when trying to have a baby and the extreme process his wife needed to meet to qualify for paid IVF treatment in the UK. Tom also addresses the experience of being a partner who is going through a physically and emotionally painful fertility journey with a positive surprise result. Finally, Tom describes in one word what family means to him.  Show notes: https://www.storkdpodcast.com/season2 In This Episode:  [ 1:27 ] Tom's introduction  [ 3:17 ] Tom's fertility journey with his partner  [ 5:08 ] Differences between US and UK healthcare systems and navagitating different requirements of the UK system when trying to have a baby [ 9:17 ] Gastric Bypass Surgery, the extreme process Tom's wife went through to meet the UK's healthcare system to qualify for IVF treatment  [ 13:17 ] Tom's wife starts the IVF process [ 14:50 ] The trauma that unfolded from the IVF process [ 17:06 ] Addressing the topic of toxic masculinity and how to support your partner during the fertility process [ 19:07 ] How Tom's documentary came to fruition  [21:31] The start of the documentary and getting men's perspective going through the infertility treatments  [ 24:15 ] Points of similarity between the men's fertility experiences in the documentary [ 26:49 ] What surprises Tom learned from making the documentary  [30:26] Giving the male perspective on infertility to clinical and medical staff community [ 31:03 ] Why the medical community was shocked when they first saw the documentary [ 33:09 ] Circling back to find out the outcome of Tom's fertility journey [ 38:49 ] Tom's playlist that would describe his fertility journey [ 40:36] The word that defines family for Tom [ 41:26] Where to watch The Easy Bit and how to find Tom Takeaways:  Men feel like it's all on them to provide the best emotional and physical support to their partner going through the fertility journey together. However, this can lead to men overlooking their own emotional and physical needs. By providing adequate mental health care to men during fertility journeys, they are better equipped to care for their partner's needs, leading to both parties having their needs adequately met. Tackling the concept of “toxic masculinity,” which is exceedingly prevalent in today's society, needs to be addressed. By taking the first steps to dismantle it and provide mental health support to men, the emotional burden is processed more productively which is beneficial to both partners in the fertility journey. While facing fertility issues- finding a supportive community can be a helpful tool as you manage through treatments.  Infertility affects both men and women, however you generally know the female's perspective. Helping men also have a voice during this time can be helpful for the couple as they experience it together.  People who haven't faced infertility will probably not understand what you're going through. Connecting them to some resources on how to help family and friends cope through this time is important and helpful for all. Providing more support to men in a fertility journey can be beneficial to women Fertility treatments including IVF are not a guarantee for success and even though it may not work out for you and your partner, you may come out with a stronger relationship. Do you live with so much body shame that you've contemplated stomach surgeries such as gastric bypass? Are you someone who has already undergone this surgery? Has this surgery only made things with your body more confusing? Do you also deal with PCOS or other complicated health conditions that push weight loss for health? Are you a professional within the dietetics field who also deals with food and body issues? Listen now for some solutions on how to navigate with these various challenges. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. Key Points: Exciting announcement! In September I will be launching my very first online course, dedicated to people who are trying to find food peace while living with PCOS. Sign up for my newsletter to get updates!! And if you deal with PCOS and struggle with food and your body, I want to hear from you! Send me an email at LoveFoodPodcast@gmail.com, and let me know what you'd love to see in the course. Dealing with all of these issues related to food is exhausting! Struggling with shame, acceptance, an eating disorder, and much more takes so much energy. You are not a sham, but bariatric surgery as a solution to food peace is a sham. Bariatric surgery is a stomach amputation. It does not have any documented long-term health outcomes, and we do NOT have enough data at this time to suggest that this surgery is a choice that will enhance personal wellness. In any health profession it's important to have size diversity! Fat dietitians, fat gym teachers, and fat healthcare providers are important. If you want to hear more about this topic, check out Love, Food Episode 8 with Glenys Oyston. Many people who choose to study nutrition that have an eating disorder background pursue it because they hope it will help them learn more about food for the sake of their eating disorder, not because they actually want to be dietitians. Recovery from an eating disorder requires a great recovery team! It is so, so common for dietitians and dietitians in training to seek out their own dietitian. If privacy is an issue, many practitioners work online now as well! Question whether or not being a dietitian is for you! It's possible that when you find recovery, it may not be something that speaks to you anymore. This can be a hard decision, but you will get through it! Research and data on how to help people who have had bariatric surgery recover from an eating disorder is sparse because it's a new experience, but it is becoming more common, and there are definitely practitioners out there who can help. REJECTING weight loss is going to be an essential part of the healing process! One cannot heal from an eating disorder while they pursue weight loss!!! When you seek out treatment, make sure your support team is weight neutral. You may even be able to find a Health at Every Size practitioner! People are more likely to experience an eating disorder if they have PCOS. It really isn't about food... it's about stigma, shame, and food lies. Don't give body hate more power!! Increased Alcoholism Rates Post Gastric Bypass Surgery

In 2012 a study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that reports the percentage of patients abusing alcohol increased from 7.6% to 9.6% two years after gastric bypass surgery - potentially creating 2,000 alcoholics every year in the US. There is more than one theory on why this occurs.  Some say it is addiction transfer: a patient switches an addiction to food to an addiction to alcohol.  More recent evidence suggests an anatomical explanation - metabolic and hormonal changes triggered by gastric bypass surgery that leave patients especially vulnerable to alcoholism.  Maybe it is both - or neither?  The truth is nobody is 100% sure of why alcoholism rates increase post surgery. If you are struggling with alcoholism post-surgery, however, the reason why may not be as relevant as what to do about it.  There are unique challenges that face people whose alcoholism may be attributed to gastric bypass surgery, and on this episode of the Bubble Hour we will discuss this startling trend.  We will share more information about why experts feel this increased vulnerability to alcoholism occurs, and speak with special guest Jessica about her own experience with gastric bypass surgery, alcoholism and recovery. We are also excited to welcome Diane Grimaldi, DNP, PMHCS, BC as a guest on the show and an expert on this issue. Diane started her psychotherapy practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1984 after receiving her Masters Degree in Adult Mental Health Nursing from Boston College and becoming a board certified Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Nursing.  In 2014 she received a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.  For more information about Diane and her practice please visit www.grimaldicounseling.com.

Dr. Michael Steelman, M.D. (Oklahoma City, OK), Board Certified Bariatric Physician and past president of the American Bariatric Physicians Association, discusses recent reports regarding how gastric bypass surgery, in which the stomach is made smaller allowing food to bypass part of the small intestine, can lower the effects of diabetes and high blood pressure. Although gastric bypass surgery has its place, there are still risks involved especially since the part of the intestine where many minerals and vitamins are most easily absorbed are bypassed leading to a possible deficiency in iron, calcium, magnesium or vitamins. Non-surgical weight loss can have the same positive effects on diabetes and high blood pressure with minimal risk. For additional information, please visit www.thesteelmanclinic.com. Second guest, Art Bernstein (Gold Hill, OR), naturalist and author, discusses the fountain of youth.
